Netflix has lined up its next high-concept, high-demand Korean drama. K-pop superstar Jisoo, of mega-group Blackpink, has signed on to star in Boyfriend on Demand, a romantic-drama series about an overworked young Korean woman who seeks escape in a virtual reality dating program “where she meets the boyfriends of her dreams.”

In the series, Jisoo will play exhausted webtoon producer Mi-rae, “who longs for a second chance at love” but has grown accustomed to a nonexistent dating life due to her hectic schedule. When Mi-rae receives a mysterious “Monthly Boyfriend” device by chance, she decides to give it a try, entering a virtual reality world where she encounters unrealistically perfect boyfriends, “awakening her dormant desires for romance.”

Popular singer-turned actor Seo In-guk (Doom at Your Service, Café Minamdang) will star opposite Jisoo as Park Kyeong-nam, Mi-rae’s colleague and rival webtoon producer.

Blackpink’s Jisoo will take a step into virtual reality in Boyfriend on Demand, the working title for Netflix’s upcoming romantic comedy.

Jisoo will star opposite Seo In-guk (Doom at Your Service, Café Minamdang) in the romcom series and play Seo Mi-rae, an overworked webtoon producer who searches for love on a virtual reality dating subscription program where “she meets the boyfriends of her dreams.”

According to an announcement of the upcoming comedy, Jisoo’s Mi-rae receives a “Monthly Boyfriend” device and “encounters unrealistically perfect boyfriends, awakening her dormant desires for romance.

Netflix has given a green light to Boyfriend On Demand (working title), a new romantic comedy series starring Blackpink’s Jisoo and Seo In-guk.

Production has begun on the series which revolves around exhausted webtoon producer Mi-rae (Jisoo) who escapes reality through a subscription-based virtual dating simulation program, where she meets the boyfriends of her dreams. Blending the relatable challenges of daily work life and a never-before-seen virtual reality dating subscription program, Boyfriend on Demand (Wt) promises to revolutionize dating.

The free streaming platform added 4,000 hours worth of award-winning Korean movies and shows, ranging from Lee Chang-dong’s critically acclaimed drama “Burning” to K-romance series such as “Doom at Your Service,” and it encompasses projects from Cj Enm and New ID. The Samsung offering makes it one of the largest providers of Korean scripted and unscripted series and films in the U.S.

Concrete Utopia is a film that gained acclaim and was a massive hit at the Korean box office in 2023 with an earning of $28.0 million from 3.85 million admissions when the film opened on August 9 of last year. The film was also a Korean Oscar contender. Variety’s review of the film stated, “[Concrete Utopia] places its characters in a desperate, scary, do-or-die situation and then refuses to tell the audience what to think about them. It’s a fractious, blood-soaked drama about the will to survive that feels like Earthquake crossed with Lord of the Flies.”

Variety is now reporting that Concrete Utopia has secured a U.S. streaming release on a platform called Rakuten Viki, a service that specializes in Asian content. The streaming platform has licensed exclusive rights to the film in the U.

Leading Korean film sales agent Finecut has taken international rights to stylish genre actioner “Project Wolf Hunting.” The company will launch it at the Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Contents and Film Market which starts at the weekend.

Directed by Kim Hongsun, the film is set on board a cargo ship which is being used to transport dangerous criminals from Manila in the Philippines to Busan, South Korea. An escape attempt leads to a riot which in turn unleashes a sinister force.

Kim is known for delivering stylized genre films including “Metamorphosis” (2019), “The Chase” (2017), and “The Con Artist” (2014). For “Project Wolf Hunting” he has assembled a cast of Korean rising stars including Seo In-guk (“Pipeline” and TV’s “Doom At Your Service”) and Jang Dong-yoon (TV’s “Search” and “The Tale of Nokdu”) as two protagonists, alongside veteran actors Choi Guyhwa and Sung Dong-il in leading roles.

After taking 2020 off, BAFTA’s Children’s Awards are set to return in November 2022 following a review starting in May of last year. The upcoming awards will place a stronger focus on engaging young audiences through updated categories and a ceremony to be held at the end of a larger weekend of BAFTA Kids activities. Entry to the awards will open in May of next year with an extended eligibility period reaching back to July 1, 2019. Viki has released a new K-drama that has fans on the edge of their seats waiting for new episodes. Doom at Your Service is the latest binge-worthy addiction, as it follows many major tropes. And this isn't a bad thing, as these tropes make the K-drama a fun watch with a riveting storyline.
