Late one night, when a wealthy count is assassinated in bed for being a collaborator, someone returns fire from the bedroom is also shot dead by the assassin. This turns out to be a now-AWOL British lieutenant who was in bed with the count that night, implying gay sex. Nudity includes only bare-chested male.

During an attempt to pass a road checkpoint, a guard is gunned down by a machine gun; this is sudden and graphic. Gunfire is exchanged as they flee. In a flashback, we see an older man in a chair being beaten for information; he dies of a heart attack in the chair. A dog is beaten and killed; a blood stain is left. The assassination of two men in a bed is shown. A man is attacked in his bedroom and beaten with a pipe; he is also dragged outside and kicked.

Frequent cigarette smoking; cigarettes are used as a valuable barter item. Wine drinking; one man becomes so intoxicated he has to be helped to bed.

The whole episode is filled with tension as the protagonist passes through an area with various factions during the war: Communist partisans, fleeing fascists, beaten Germans, British troops and Italians.
