Bueller? Bueller? Ferris Bueller’s Day Off stars Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck are in talks to reunite for The Best Is Yet To Come, an upcoming comedy from screenwriter Allan Loeb with Jon Turteltaub in the director’s chair. The project is based on the French film of the same name, with Amy Baer producing via Gidden Media and executive producer Dimitri Rassam, who made the 2019 original. In addition to penning the script, Loeb will also executive produce.
If they sign on the dotted line, Broderick and Ruck will play best friends who, through a colossal misunderstanding that creates a ticking clock, hop in a car to find the estranged son of one of them and also try to do all the things that life has prevented them from doing.
Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck played Ferris Beuller and Cameron Frye in the 1986 John Hughes classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

Sam Anderson spent years playing Dr. Bernard Nadler on Lost, first appearing in the show's second season as Rose's husband. However, his excellent performance in the series, which centers around a plane crash leaving its passengers stranded on an island in the South Pacific, actually had some detrimental effects on the actor's real life.
In an interview with Variety, where the actor discussed his career, including his current role in the Matlockrevival with Kathy Bates, Anderson talked about his time on lost and how it affected people's perception of him – and his on-screen partner, L. Scott Caldwell. "Sometimes," Anderson explained, "Scott and I would be traveling on the same flight and as we walked on, we’d see people’s faces like, ‘Get me off this plane; it’s gonna crash.'"
Anderon also shared that another downside of his role is how much people would badger him about whether...

Is there room for two shows about murders inside a building at the Emmys? Netflix's The Residence stars Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp, the world's greatest detective who's called to solve a murder at the White House. The murder mystery premiered on Thursday with all eight episodes and is entering in comedy at the Emmys. So which categories does it stand the best shot at cracking?

Some old-school metalheads may blast the Grammy Awards for supposedly having no rock cred, but that absolutely isn’t the case for Judas Priest’s Rob Halford, an unimpeachably credible rock legend and possibly the jolliest man in metal. Priest are nominated this year alongside “a great kind of broad demographic of all these different generations of metal maniacs” — Metallica, Gojira, Spiritbox, and Knocked Loose featuring Poppy — for Best Metal Performance for “Crown of Horns,” a track off the band’s 19th studio album, Invincible Shield. And Halford could not be more brimming with more “absolute shock and excitement and feelings.”

Over the 18 months from January 2023 to July 2024, all of Newman’s Netflix projects have tallied a combined 400M global views. Viewing data for the second half of 2024 is not yet available, though Netflix should be releasing that soon via their biannual data dump.

American Primeval on Netflix is a violent and intense look at the American frontier. Set during the 1850s, American Primeval includes characters in search of safety and prosperity, although their interests clash with dire consequences. Numerous groups and individuals in American Primeval compete for personal, political, and religious freedom. Indigenous Americans, Mormon settlers, and the federal government all have vested interests in Utah Territory. The key characters each shape how the story unfolds and the actors' stellar performances bring the American West's gritty action to life.
Many of the names in American Primeval are from history and several of the faces of the performers are very familiar. Here's a look at the characters and the cast of American Primeval.

There are several other movies and shows similar to Netflix's epic period Western series American Primeval. American Primeval was written by Mark L. Smith, who co-wrote the screenplay for The Revenant with Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Peter Berg directs all six episodes of American Primeval. Taylor Kitsch leads an ensemble cast as Isaac Reed, which features Betty Gilpin, Dane DeHaan, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, Shea Whigham, Lucas Neff, and Kim Coates as Brigham Young. In addition to Young, American Primeval alters several real-life historical details and figures.
American Primeval uniquely blends brutal and violent elements of the horror genre with the classic Western. Despite its 59% Rotten Tomatoes score, it earned an 86% audience score and has been in Netflix's Top 10 TV Shows in the United States since it was released on January 9, 2025. Kitsch previously starred in the Peter Berg film Lone Survivor alongside Mark Wahlberg and Berg's classic television series Friday Night Lights.

Taylor Kitsch could have been a one-note actor. He was handsome, and could have delved into making a bunch of Hallmark films and been just fine. Instead, the British Columbian decided he wanted to stretch himself. He still got pigeonholed a bit.
He tends to get roles that show him as a bit rough around the edges. He plays the roles well, though one might want to see Kitsch get a chance to do something else. Maybe that time will come soon.
In the series below, Kitsch plays a lot of the same types of characters, but he is talented enough to bring some nuance to each role. The shows might not be perfect, but that is no fault of the actors. And his new series on Netflix, American Primeval, might rank as one of his best.

The potential dangers are boundless in the limited series American Primeval, now streaming on Netflix Jan. 9.
Starring Taylor Kitsch, the raw, adventurous exploration of the birth of the American West comes to life in the six-episode series. Here’s everything you need to know so far about the grueling journey West.
This is America, 1857. Up is down, pain is everywhere, and innocence and tranquility are losing the battle to hatred and fear. Peace is the shrinking minority, and very few possess grace — even fewer know compassion. There’s no safe haven in these wild lands, and only one goal matters: survival. American Primeval is a fictionalized dramatization and examination of the violent collision of culture, religion, and community as men and women fight and die for control of this world. The six-episode limited series sees Berg re-team with Friday Night Lights star Taylor Kitsch, who stars alongside Betty Gilpin and Dane DeHaan.

American Primeval is a daunting factionalized look at 1857 and the cultural warfare over the fight for freedom and land. The battles turn ugly, the war turns violent, and the struggle for survival has never been more dire.
“There’s no such thing as safe in this world.”
Peter Berg makes viewers feel that quote from the opening scene with every fiber of our being.

Saura Lightfoot-Leon and Derek Hinkey are two foes who find an underlying respect for one another in American Primeval. The Netflix Western miniseries continues Lightfoot-Leon's rise to stardom on screen following her breakout turn in the acclaimed drama Hoard, in which she co-starred with fellow rising actor Joseph Quinn, having also appeared in the hit Apple TV+ war miniseries Masters of the Air and Showtime's spy thriller The Agency. The show also marks Hinkey's biggest role to date, with the actor having previously delivered supporting turns in Walker: Independence and Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1.

Dane DeHaan and Kim Coates represent two very different sides of Mormon culture in the Old West in American Primeval. Taylor Kitsch and Peter Berg are reuniting for their fifth project, with Betty Gilpin also along for the ride, in American Primeval. Kitsch and Berg first began working together on the TV adaptation of Friday Night Lights, which also marked the actor's breakthrough role on screen, before going on to work together on 2012's Battleship adaptation, 2013's Lone Survivor and 2023's Painkiller. Gilpin, meanwhile, first found success with her supporting role in Nurse Jackie before garnering acclaim for her leading turns in Glow, Mrs. Davis and The Hunt.
American Primeval, directed by Berg, explores the dangerous world of the American West in 1857, including some real-world figures and events, namely the Mormon Mountain Meadows Massacre. Gilpin serves as one of the leads of the miniseries as Sara Rowell, a high-society mother who sets off with her son on a journey to reach her husband and his father, while also holding a dark secret.

Directed by Friday Night Lights’ Pete Berg and written by The Revenant’s Mark L. Smith, this six-episode series takes viewers to 1857, where America is still a mess of violence, fear, and chaos. It’s got all the intensity you’d expect from the guys who brought you Lone Survivor and Painkiller, but with way more grit.
So, what’s the story? Think harsh, brutal, and dark. American Primeval is a fictionalized dive into the bloody birth of the American West.

Stars: Scot Scurlock, Dylan A. Young, Timothy Rogers, Faith McCoy, Garius Kemp, Tanner Bluewolf, Madelyn Hopfensperger, Daniel Considine | Written and Directed by Charlie Steeds
For his third film of the year, writer/director Charlie Steeds delivers Night Harvest, a blend of Firestarter and Dark Night of the Scarecrow, with a dash of Friday the 13th: The New Blood thrown in for good measure. It’s an odd mix to be sure, but it fits in with it actually fits in with Lord of Wolves, which could best be described as Hellraiser with werewolves and the Christmas slasher He Sees You When You’re Sleeping. And Steeds has shown a talent for blending genres and delivering bloody, atmospheric horror with its roots in 80s cinema.
The film begins with a chilling black-and-white prologue set in 1958, centring on a farmer who has an unfortunate run-in with an inbred hillbilly named Judd. This...

There’s little doubt that the Western genre has been seeing a resurgence as of late thanks to shows like Yellowstone and 1883, and now Netflix is getting in on the action with the six-part thriller American Primeval. Starring Taylor Kitsch, the series reunites the Friday Night Lights alumni with Peter Berg, who directed the 2004 movie, and would go on to develop the 2006 hit series in which Kitsch portrayed fullback Tim Riggins.

In the new year, we’re going back to the Old West with “American Primeval,” a Western survival thriller from director Peter Berg (“Friday Night Lights”), writer Mark L. Smith (“The Revenant”), and showrunner Eric Newman (“Narcos”). Netflix released a trailer for the limited series on Thursday.
The series follows people trying to survive on the frontier in 1857. “If these Natives here don’t murder you, you got the Wasatch Mountain Range, grizzlies, wolves, and riled-up Mormons,” mountain man Jim Bridger (Shea Whigham) warns in the trailer. The show’s official description puts the conflict in extremely dramatic terms: “Up is down, pain is everywhere, innocence and tranquility are losing the battle to hatred and fear. Peace is the shrinking minority, and very few possess grace — even fewer know compassion. There is no safe haven in these brutal lands, and only one goal matters: survival. ‘American Primeval’ is a fictionalized...

For that reason the Painkiller singer wants The Real Housewives of Orange County star, Jennifer “Jenn” Pedranti to postpone her marriage to fiance Ryan Boyajian.
During a podcast conversation with Teddi Mellencamp about the Oc franchise, Erika urged Jenn, “Please don’t marry this man.”
The sentiment was expressed during the conversation regarding Ryan’s involvement in a gambling scandal.
Earlier in the season, Ryan refuted Tamra Judge’s allegation that his home was raided by the FBI.
However, things took a turn after filming wrapped when news broke that Ryan and his friend had been named in the money laundering scandal.
The Oc cameras went back up to capture the aftermath, and we saw a devastated Jenn plus her castmates airing concern for the blonde beauty.

Ann Lowe — the pioneering fashion designer and American couturier — is getting the biopic treatment at TriStar thanks to Serena Williams and Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth Carter.
Sony’s TriStar Pictures acquired the pitch for the project, titled The Dress, about Lowe, one of the country’s most prolific but also least-known couturiers. Lowe, who died in 1981, designed mid-century wardrobes for the biggest names in American society and industry, including members of the Rockefeller, Roosevelt, Du Pont and Whitney families.
The story will focus on how Lowe, who was the first Black woman to own a shop on Madison Avenue, was commissioned to design the wedding dress that Jackie Bouvier wore at her 1953 wedding to John F. Kennedy.
Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster, the writers behind the Mister Rogers movie A Beautiful Day in The Neighborhood, will pen the screenplay based on the book By Her Own Design by Piper Huguley.

How do you picture yourself saying "I'll be right there"? Maybe it's super casual because, well, most things can wait. Or perhaps it's the polar opposite, and you're saying it with utter turmoil because the person to whom you're speaking is under the impression that, no, it cannot wait. The latter is typically the case for aging mom and soon-to-be grandma Wanda, played to reliable perfection by Emmy winner Edie Falco (Avatar: The Way of Water).
Directed by Brendan Walsh (reteaming with Falco after a handful of Nurse Jackie episodes they did together) and written by Jim Beggarly, I'll Be Right There benefits from the same sort of razor-sharp wit Falco brought to her Sopranos role of Carmela, plus a handful of other elements such as the stellar cast alongside Falco for her wryly funny new indie feature.

Zach Gilford would be open to a Friday Night Lights reunion, but only if the story is authentic and necessary. A movie sequel to Friday Night Lights was attempted more than a decade ago. Because of the show's iconic status, there is a general reluctance to continue the story or produce a reboot.
Friday Night Lights star Zach Gilford discusses gathering the cast for a possible reunion. Gilford has recently been portraying the villainous Elias Voit in the Paramount+ crime drama Criminal Minds: Evolution. However, his breakout role came with the sports saga from creator Peter Berg. Gilford portrayed Matt Saracen among the Friday Nights Lights cast of characters. The three-time Emmy-winning hit has endured long after its 2011 conclusion, with questions about a sequel or a follow-up occasionally rising to the surface.
In a recent interview with TV Insider, Gilford talked about the possibility of a Friday Night Lights reunion.

Once again, the Emmy Awards nominations don’t include a slew of TV favorites. Among the most notable snubs: Emma Stone for Best Drama Actress and a complete shutout of her Showtime series “The Curse.” Equally surprising was “Shogun” supporting actresses Moeka Hoshi and Fumi Nikaido missing the ballot. On the comedy side, Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” missed for Comedy Series and a forecasted bid for its star Theo James. And although “The Bear” had a solid morning overall, Abby Elliott wasn’t able to ride the wave of fortune in Best Comedy Supporting Actress. Ever since its inception, the Indian film industry has been obsessed with two kinds of criminals: gangsters, and those who are considered terrorists by the government. And while the threat they pose to society and human life is legitimate, in reality, it’s eclipsed by private organizations and government bodies that are in charge of the lifeline of our country. Movies such as Indian (the Kamal Haasan one), Sivaji: The Boss, Mersal, Gabbar Is Back, Sardar, and Jawan have tried to draw our attention to the fact that, with each passing day, doctors, medical experts, and the CEOs of pharmacy companies are killing more people than any mythical don or terrorist group ever can. While talking about the harmful effects of capitalism on small tribes and the little land they have in their possession, Kaala Paani shone a light on how dangerous the whole nexus between private and government bodies is.

If there is any agreement among Emmy pundits this awards season, it’s the fact that perhaps the most competitive collection of categories surrounds the limited series genre, where an embarrassment of riches promises a dogfight among an abundant list of worthy nominees in Best Limited Series and the four limited/made-for-tv movie acting lineups. During a limited-focused slugfest debate in advance of the Emmy nominations announcement on July 17, Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery and news and features editor Ray Richmond were all in agreement that Gold Derby pacesetter “Baby Reindeer” is a worthy frontrunner that’s likely to ultimately take the top limited prize (assuming it is in fact nominated). But they were all over the map on how the rest of that category shaped up as well as how the performer slots were poised to shake out. While there are a...

Nearly a year since independent Polish studio Kruger & Flint Productions’ arcade throwback Fps Bloodhound burst onto Steam, the shooter is now available on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Xbox fans won’t be left out for too long, as Bloodhound will arrive this August for the Xbox One and the Xbox Series.
Set in meticulously crafted hellish locations inspired by cult horror movies, legendary Fps games and real-world references, Bloodhound casts you as a valiant member of the Order of Keepers of the Gates, a secret faction of the Templar order. You’ve been tasked with guarding the gates of Hell against the Cult of Astaroth, which seeks to open them and let all hell loose.
Naturally, you’re not going to stand for this, and with classic Fps games such as Doom, Quake and Painkiller inspiring your arsenal, you’re ready to slay some demons. Your 10 weapons include implements such as a machete,...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, as the eligibility period closes Friday, we discuss two last-minute limited/TV movie hopefuls.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re at the end of 2024 Emmys eligibility, and not without some last-minute entries. This week, Netflix added “Eric” to its stable of limited series contenders — joining fellow May release “A Man in Full,” as well as “Ripley,” “Griselda,” “Painkiller” and presumed frontrunner “Baby Reindeer.” Meanwhile, over at HBO, “The Great Lillian Hall” is here, a TV movie that puts Jessica Lange in contention for Best Limited/TV Movie Actress. It’s funny: Neither of these projects feels like they connected with critics and the late drops are always dicey when there are too many shows to watch in the first place.

The concept of the limited series swept the TV world recently, and it felt like it happened overnight.
It is not an entirely new idea, as miniseries have existed since the time of radio dramas.
However, people lost interest in them at some point, and the era seemed to come to an end.
So much so that in 1991, the Emmy Awards merged Outstanding Miniseries with Outstanding TV Movie.
After numerous name changes to the category, the concept suddenly resurged -- the limited series was born.
With the popularity of American Horror Story, in 2015 they changed the category to Outstanding Limited Series.
TV Shows Should Make Stars, Not Depend On Them
But now, the idea carries almost no weight due to networks and streamers renewing the popular limited series and turning them into plain old series.

The limited series Painkiller is a tragedy, period. It may have some absurdist elements, like a sing-along at an OxyContin convention in Miami or giant stuffed plushies with Purdue Pharma branding, but the show’s ending is bleak, as the series shines a sobering light on those affected by America’s opioid crisis –– the aftershocks of which are still felt today.
“We set out to make this show about the [opioid] epidemic, what caused it, why it was allowed to go on and, and why it’s very unlikely that there will ever be real justice — at least the justice that’s deserved,” executive producer Eric Newman told Tudum.
Here, Tudum unpacks just how far the pharmaceutical industrial complex went in the series, and how, as executive producer and director Pete Berg puts it, this “distorted, capitalistic nightmare” that churns pills...
