In a widely expected move, Lionsgate shareholders Wednesday voted overwhelmingly in favor of the separation of the company’s studio business and the Starz subscription business.

The vote came at Lionsgate’s annual shareholder held April 23. At the meeting, all other proxy resolutions, including the slate of board of director nominees and executive compensation, were also approved. In an SEC filing, Lionsgate said 99.82% of Class A shares and 99.27% of Class B shares were voted in favor of the separation. Shareholders also approved combining our Lionsgate’s two classes of stock into a single class.

The transaction separating Lionsgate Studios and Starz is expected to occur on or about May 5, 2025, the company said. Under the plan, Starz will be led by current CEO Jeff Hirsch and will trade under the stock symbol Strz. Lionsgate Studios trades under the symbol Lion.

Two of Hollywood’s biggest stars have clapped back against a report putting down Ryan Coogler’s new original horror movie, Sinners. The film opened with $63 million at the global box office, including $48 million from domestic earnings and $15 million from international markets. The film was produced for a reported budget of $90 million, meaning it still needs around $180 million to break even. Still, a $63 million start is outstanding for an original horror movie with such strong reviews. However, Variety’s box office story for Sinners’ opening weekend performance took a negative angle, citing “a $90 million price tag before global marketing expenses” that leaves “profitability a ways away.” This led Ben Stiller and Patrick Schwarzenegger to respond in social media posts, which can be found below.

The poster spotlights Ana de Armas' Eve Macarro in a crowded field of new and familiar faces to the John Wick universe, including Wick (Keanu Reeves), the Director (Anjelica Huston), and Winston (Ian McShane) surrounded by guns and ornamental backgrounds. The Highlander cannot die! After originally being set up at Lionsgate as a potential new universe of movies from the director of the “John Wick” series, director Chad Stahelski’s remake of the 1980s cult film “Highlander” is changing sides.

Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists, as led by former Netflix film chief Scott Stuber, are in final negotiations to secure the rights to remake a new version of “Highlander,” again with the aim to release the film in theaters.

Instead of yet another new take on it, Stahelski is still attached to direct, and “Man of Steel” star Henry Cavill is still attached to star (looks like all of that sword training he told CinemaCon crowds he was doing won’t go to waste). Michael Finch (“John Wick: Chapter 4”) is writing the screenplay. United Artists too still has hopes that the film could be developed into a larger new series.

Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists’ (UA) and Scott Stuber are in final talks to secure the rights to the cult classic 1980s action fantasy franchise “Highlander” and the planned remake set to begin production this fall. The film will be released in theaters and is being acquired in turnaround from Lionsgate.

Henry Cavill is attached to star with Chad Stahelski (“John Wick” franchise) set to direct. Michael Finch (“John Wick: Chapter 4”) wrote the script.

UA’s Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt will produce alongside Neal H. Moritz (“Fast & Furious” franchise), and 87Eleven Entertainment, Stahelski’s production banner.

To close out their CinemaCon presentation today, Lionsgate officially announced John Wick: Chapter 5, which is now in active development at the studio, with both director Chad Stahelski and star Keanu Reeves set to return.

To date, the franchise has grossed over $1.028 billion at the global box office, with each installment grossing more than the last. The original John Wick earned $86 million worldwide, John Wick: Chapter 2 grossed $174.3 million, John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum topped $328.3 million, and, most recently, John Wick: Chapter 4 collected $440.1 million worldwide.

A spinoff film, titled Ballerina is due out this summer, and two more John Wick films were announced earlier today: an anipated prequel film that will follow Baba Yaga as he completes The Impossible Task, and a Caine spinoff film that will follow Donnie Yen's character after the events of Chapter 4.

Like all other installments in the ever-growing “John Wick” franchise, the Caine movie will be produced by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee through their Thunder Road banner and by series director Chad Stahelski, who produces through his 87Eleven Entertainment production company. Yen will also serve as an executive producer.

The movie’s logline is being kept under wraps, probably in a locked drawer at the Continental.

After confirming weeks ago that John Wick 5 was in development, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson revealed that Keanu Reeves will return and reprise his role as the Baba Yaga in the film, with veteran director Chad Stahelski set to helm the fifth installment. Lionsgate is also reuniting with Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, who will produce the film alongside Reeves and Stahelski. Plot details and additional casting are being kept under wraps, and the studio declined to give a potential release date. Early development on John Wick 5 is officially underway, and a filming start date has not been set.

John Wick will return in “Chapter 5,” as it was officially announced on Tuesday that Lionsgate is in development on the next film in the billion-dollar franchise. The announcement was made on the CinemaCon stage by Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson.

Lionsgate is teaming on the development of the film with Thunder Road producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, franchise director and producer Chad Stahelski, and star and producer Keanu Reeves.

The most recent film in the franchise, “John Wick: Chapter 4,” took in over $440 million at the worldwide box office, with each of the first four films accomplishing the rare feat of outperforming its predecessor.

“Keanu, Chad, Basil and Erica would not return unless they had something truly phenomenal and fresh to say with these characters and this world,” Fogelson said on the CinemaCon stage. “We can’t wait for audiences to see where the journey takes us next.

Lionsgate has confirmed a fifth John Wick movie is in the works, with Keanu Reeves reprising his role as the eponymous character.

Titled John Wick: Chapter 5, the studio is developing the film with franchise director Chad Stahelski, who is also producing alongside Reeves and Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee.

Back in 2020, Lionsgate announced John Wick 5 would be filmed back-to-back with John Wick: Chapter 4, but those plans were scrapped due to the pandemic.

The ending of the fourth installment also called into question whether Reeves’ character could return, though the actor recently intimated that Wick’s purported death ruled out the possibility. Perhaps that was just a misdirection.

Montreal-based VFX firm Rodeo FX, the visual effects credits of which include Games of Thrones, Stranger Things, The Rings of Power, John Wick: Chapter 4 and Dune, has acquired former Technicolor Group subsidiary Mikros Animation.

Mikros Animation was among four France-based Technicolor Group subsidiaries alongside Mpc, The Mill and Technicolor Animations placed in receivership following the collapse of parent group at the end of February. Euphoria actor Austin Abrams has emerged as the choice to star in Sony Pictures’ and Zach Cregger’s reboot of horror action movie Resident Evil.

Cregger, the filmmaker who became part of the horror genre’s new generation thanks for his breakout Barbarian, wrote the script and is directing the feature.

He is readying for the release his follow-up to Barbarian, an ensemble horror piece titled Weapons. Abrams makes up part of the cast, which includes Josh Brolin and Julia Garner. Resident Evil would mark a reunion between the two, should any deal make.
