Chris Hemsworth's 'Blackhat' Thriller Was a Complete Disaster
Image
Quick Links 'Blackhat' Never Quite Lived Up to Its Billing 'Blackhat' Was a Failure Across Multiple Fronts Chris Hemsworth Quickly Rebounded Why Chris Hemsworth Remains a Leading Man of Modern Hollywood

The MCU has been capturing the imagination of moviegoers and converting many of them to superhero nerds for almost two decades now, but it's also been responsible for drastically altering the career trajectories of many of its prominent stars. Among those most affected was Chris Hemsworth. The Aussie heartthrob may be a household name now, but before he first wielded Thor's mighty hammer, he wasn't well-known outside Australian soaps.

However, after a brief 2009 appearance as Kirk's father in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek, Hemsworth went on to gain some recognition for his gritty portrayal of Kyle Garrity in Perfect Getaway. His true break would come two years later when he was given the role of the title character...

2 Years Before Their Breakout MCU Role, This Actor Made Their Cinematic Debut in a Beloved Sci-Fi Film
Image
In 2009, J.J. Abrams rebooted the beloved Star Trek franchise for the big screen. The cast included several big stars, like Chris Pine, Simon Pegg and Zo Saldaa. Fresh faces littered the cast, some that would quickly rise in stardom far beyond the little screen time they enjoyed in this blockbuster hit. Looking back, some fans might be surprised to see Marvel's Thor playing the small role of Captain Kirk's father, George, especially considering that George Kirk sacrifices himself in the opening scene.

Chris Hemsworth jumped from television to film with his short appearance in the opening of Abrams' Star Trek. As he sacrifices himself to save his family, he and his wife try and decide what to name their baby, ultimately deciding to call him Jim. With so few lines, the role gave Hemsworth little room to show off his acting chops, but the part was clearly the first...

10 Most Rewatchable Chris Hemsworth Movies, Ranked
Image
Considering the relatively short window of time hes been in the public spotlight, Chris Hemsworths rise as a movie star has been incredibly impressive to watch. Early projects like his brief cameo in 2009s Star Trek and the neo-noir thriller A Perfect Getaway indicated that he was one to watch, but Hemsworth attracted a legion of loyal fans thanks to his performance as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His success also kickstarted another franchise on Netflix with his performance as Tyler Rake in the Extraction action films.

Chris Hemsworth Reveals Why He Cant Forgive Himself for Thor: Love and Thunder
Image
Chris Hemsworth struggled with Thor: Love and Thunder, feeling he became a parody of himself. Some fans felt Love and Thunder leaned too heavily into silliness, leading to tonal inconsistencies and wasted characters. Despite occasional frustrations with his role, Hemsworth's portrayal of Thor has been praised by co-star Robert Downey Jr.

Marvel star Chris Hemsworth says he still cannot forgive himself for the 2022 MCU sequel Thor: Love and Thunder. In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Hemsworth reflects on the divisive response to the fourth Thor outing, which was met with a mixed response from both critics and audiences alike. Before the MCU, Chris Hemsworth Was on a Very Different Path
Image
MCU launched actors like Hemsworth into stardom after smaller, darker roles. Hemsworth's intense performance in A Perfect Getaway showcased his early range. Despite early success in MCU, Hemsworth's prior roles displayed his versatility in acting craft.

When plainly put, the Marvel Cinematic Universe helped to make massive stars out of celebrities who were previously just drifting in and out of movies. For example — after starring in many, many films since 1970 that either barely passed at the box office (regarding ticket sales) or flat-out failed, Robert Downey Jr. flew to the sky with his role as Tony Stark in 2008's Iron Man.

Right before donning the role of the red, white, and blue hero in 2011's Captain America, Chris Evans was plagued with a line of mediocrely successful films (including a dead-on-arrival romantic comedy that almost ruined his career). Although they were successful in their own right, Tom Hiddleston was in...

Fast & Furious Franchise's 1st Choice For Dominic Toretto Reflects On Declining Decades-Spanning Role
Image
Timothy Olyphant reflects on turning down the chance to play Dominic Toretto in Fast & Furious and believes the franchise wouldn't have been as successful with him in the role. Olyphant has had a successful career, starring in films like Hitman and TV shows like Justified, Deadwood, and The Mandalorian. Olyphant praises Vin Diesel and acknowledges that Diesel's performance has contributed to Fast & Furious' success. Olyphant seemingly has no regrets about his decision to decline the role.

Charlie Vickers in O Senhor dos Anéis: Os Anéis de Poder (2022)
Amazon Prime Video New Releases: November 2022
Charlie Vickers in O Senhor dos Anéis: Os Anéis de Poder (2022)
How can Amazon Prime Video followup the first season finale of its biggest series ever in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? The answer lies in its list of new releases for November 2022.

Understandably, Prime Video is probably pretty tired and won’t be opting for any more Middle-earth spectacle for awhile. In its place, however, are a couple of still intriguing Amazon Original series. British Western drama series The English is set to arrive on Nov. 11 to both Prime Video and BBC Two. Emily Blunt stars as a woman who heads to the American West in 1890 looking for revenge on the man she sees as responsible for the death of her son. Cool! Speaking of the English, the James Corden-starring Mammals also premieres on Nov. 11.

On the film side of things, Prime Video has a handful of interesting options. The latest effort to make Harry Styles a movie star,...

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: May 2022
Laz Alonso, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Karl Urban, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jack Quaid, Tomer Capone, and Karen Fukuhara in The Boys (2019)
May 2022 represents the calm before the storm for Amazon Prime Video. Early June will see the arrival of the much-hyped third season of The Boys. Before all that, however, Prime has some other streaming goodies to tide you over.

This month is highlighted by a handful of intriguing original series. Season two of Amazon’s sleeper hit The Wilds premieres on May 6. This pulpy mystery series about a group of teenage girls marooned on an island is Prime Video’s version of Lost or Yellowjackets so give it a watch if that kind of thing sounds up your alley. Also arriving on May 6 is the true crime docuseries The Unsolved Murder of Beverly Lynn Smith.

Canada’s finest comedy goobers The Kids in the Hall return in a rebooted version of their sketch series on May 13. The week after that J.K. Simmons will try his hand at sci-fi once again...

The B-Side – In Conversation with Steve Zahn
Image
Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.

And today we talk to the great Steve Zahn, currently starring in the impressive indie Cowboys. Conor and I were lucky enough to speak with Zahn about his eclectic career, including highlights such as Safe Men, Riding in Cars with Boys, and A Perfect Getaway.

We discuss the immense variety in his resume, from Reality Bites to Rescue Dawn, the slightly infamous legacy of Sundance fave Happy, Texas, the way he approaches each role, and a little-seen film called Blowin’ Smoke (Freak Talks About Sex).

Cowboys is currently available digitally.

Cowboys Trailer: Steve Zahn Heads into the Wilderness in Acclaimed Modern Western
Image
Let the Steve Zahnaissance commence. Whether it’s Saving Silverman, A Perfect Getaway, That Thing You Do!, You’ve Got Mail, Rescue Dawn, or even War for the Planet of the Apes, Steve Zahn’s appearance on the big screen is always a welcome one. His next role, in Anna Kerrigan’s modern-day western Cowboys, is one of his most acclaimed.

Premiering at Tribeca Film Festival last year, where Zahn picked up Best Actor and Kerrigan won Best Screenplay, the film follows the actor as a troubled but well-intentioned father who has recently separated from his wife Sally (Jillian Bell). When his wife refuses to let their trans son Joe (Sasha Knight) live as his authentic self, Troy runs off with Joe into the Montana wilderness. Ahead of a release next month on February 12, the first trailer and poster have arrived.

Watch the trailer below.

Cowboys arrives on February 12 in Virtual Cinemas and VOD.

Watch: Seth Meyers’ Interview with Timothy Olyphant Goes Delightfully Off the Rails
Image
Despite making a name for himself playing stoic characters like Deadwood’s Seth Bullock or Justified’s Raylan Givens, Timothy Olyphant has a pure chaotic streak in him that can be seen in his performances in Scream 2, Go, A Perfect Getaway, The Girl Next Door, and Late Night with Seth Meyers. Olyphant was a guest on Seth Meyers’ show last night, where he completely thwarted any attempt at having a normal conversation. Olyphant, filming remotely from his own living room, appears onscreen wearing a Van Halen jersey and a Panama Jack hat, which is our first signal that absolutely …...

Rampage movie review: American kaiju
MaryAnn’s quick take… Raises the bar on big dumb fun, with The Rock’s social-justice-warrior badass and his genuinely charming relationship with a gorilla, plus a ton of goofball sci-fi monster action turned up to 11. I’m “biast” (pro): love The Rock and Naomie Harris

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film

(learn more about this)

Rampage raises the bar on big dumb fun. I’m not sure I ever thought that could be a thing, but it’s obvious: Just because a movie is dumb doesn’t mean it has to be stupid. It doesn’t mean it has to be insulting. Just because all those things usually go together doesn’t mean they have to.

So we have The Rock, who is a certifiable Movie Star, just always a pleasure to spend...

Hellboy Reboot Casts Its Blood Queen
Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen reboot is picking up speed, filling out its cast, and moving closer to production, for an expected 2018 release. We already know that David Harbour (Stranger Things) will star as Hellboy, Ian McShane (Deadwood, American Gods) will play his adoptive father, Professor Trevor "Broom" Bruttenholm, and Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones, The Descent) will direct. Deadline is reporting that Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element, Resident Evil) is in final talks to play the (supposed) villain, the Blood Queen herself.

Based on recent fan and media reactions, the R-rated reboot has been making all the right moves and generating a lot of excitement. So, this latest news is either spectacular or horrible, depending upon your love/hate for Jovovich's work. It's a fair concern, because she was great in The Fifth Element and A Perfect Getaway (a really taut action-thriller), but she was awful in Ultraviolet and The Fourth Kind.

‘Fugitives’ DVD Review
Stars: Dominic Purcell, Luke Mably, Marie Avgeropoulos, Claudia Church, Chelsea Edmundson, Stephen Lang, Tricia Helfer | Written by Shane Dax Taylor, Chad Law | Directed by Shane Dax Taylor

A genre-standard bickering couple take their woes to a small island in the Bahamas, where they hope to patch things up and get back on the right track. That track puts them on the same path as two other couples; the charismatic William and Mary (Stephen Lang and Claudia Church) and the horny Max and Nina (Dominic Purcell and Marie Avgeropoulos). While out wining and dining with the former, their beach house is ransacked and robbed. But whodunit? And will they stop at robbery?

With a story which slow-burns like an incense candle, ambling along at a languid pace, Fugitives (aka Isolation) is not the action-heavy gunfight-palooza its cast and synopsis might suggest. Even the normally terrifying Stephen Lang is in laid-back mode here,...

Matt Birman in Diário dos Mortos (2007)
George A. Romero Is Planning a Nascar Zombie Movie
Matt Birman in Diário dos Mortos (2007)
Horror legend George A. Romero is teaming up with a frequent collaborator for his next zombie movie, which will be seeking buyers at the Fantasia International Film Festival market this summer. The new project is entitled Road of the Dead, which George A. Romero co-wrote with Matt Birman, who is slated to direct this project. It isn't clear when production may begin, but this project will be just the director's second feature film, although he has spent decades in other areas of production.

IndieWire reports that this project originated from a Matt Birman pitch from roughly 10 years ago. The story is set on a remote island where zombie prisoners race cars in a modern-day Coliseum, all for the entertainment of affluent humans. The director describes the project as a hybrid of Road Warrior and Rollerball, set at a Nascar race, and that there is "significant inspiration" from the iconic 1959 classic Ben-Hur.

First Trailer for Tarantino-Inspired Crime Thriller 'The Mason Brothers'
"This is what we got. It's a bank job, and everybody's gunna be going in on this one." A trailer has arrived for a film titled The Mason Brothers, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Keith Sutliff originally hailing from Tampa, Florida. The crime thriller is about a group of brothers + bank robbers who try to pull off a clean heist, but things go wrong. Starring Brandon Pearson, Matthew Webb, Michael Whelan, Julien Cesario, Chris Park, and Nazo Bravo. It's clear this is an homage to Tarantino and to Reservoir Dogs specifically, but it also seems to be inspired by Christopher Nolan's films, too. Doesn't look that good. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Keith Sutliff's The Mason Brothers, from YouTube (via Bd): A perfect getaway is a clean getaway. The Weekend Warrior 1/27/17: Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, A Dog’s Purpose, Gold
Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

This Past Weekend:

As per my Thursday update, M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Split ended up winning the weekend but with way more than anyone, including myself, predicted, with more than $40 million for its opening weekend. That’s pretty impressive, and his first movie to open at that level since 2010’s The Last Airbender. Meanwhile, Vin Diesel’s sequel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ended up making around where I predicted, taking second place with $20.1 million, not a great sign for the continuation of that franchise. Michael Keaton’s The Founder ended up right around where I predicted with $3.4 million, ending up just outside the Top 10. Hidden Figures, La La Land and Sing continued to do well with minimal drop-offs.

Steve Zahn to Bring the Comedy and/or Drama to 'War for the Planet of the Apes'
The ever-likable and versatile actor Steve Zahn (above in A Perfect Getaway) has joined the cast of War for the Planet of the Apes. Zahn will play a new ape character, according to Deadline, though no details have been revealed. The secrecy is part and parcel of the project, which has been written by Matt Reeves and Mark Bomback, and will be directed by Reeves, who guided the previous installment, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, to great success, including box office returns that exceeded $700 million worldwide. Dawn left uncertain the future of humanity, as men battled with apes led by Caesar (Andy Serkis), with greater warfare looming in the days ahead. Since 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the relaunch of the series has gained momentum, though it makes some...

HBO Now New Releases for October 2018
Den Of Geek Staff Sep 21, 2018

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in October 2018.

You may or may have not noticed it but HBO's horror options have gotten pretty grim. Not grim as in scary but grim as in incredibly sparse.

Thankfully the cavalry is arriving in HBO New Releases for October 2018. This is a company that wisely realizes the importance of scary movies around Halloween time. 18 scary movies are coming to HBO Now and HBO Go streams this October. Cool! The catch is that they'll all be gone by month's end. Not cool! Oh well, it's better than nothing. The Descent will also be arriving at the beginning of the month for a much longer stay.

In terms of non-horror programming, HBO has plenty to offer in October. Recent favorites The Post and Game Night make their debut while slightly older classics Dances with Wolves,...

Riddick director tackling new time travel movie, Replay
David Twohy goes from the world of Riddick to the world of time travel for his new thriller...

David Twohy's career first took off thanks to his writing, with his name on the screenplay credits for the likes of The Fugitive, Waterworld, Critters 2, Warlock and, er, G.I. Jane. His directorial breakthrough, however, came at his third attempt, Having steered films such as Disaster In Time and The Arrival (which itself isn't too bad), it was Pitch Black where everything clicked. It remains the best film he's directed to date (although we have a soft spot for A Perfect Getaway, which we talked about when chatting about whether star names ruin modern thrillers, here).

Twohy, following last year's latest Riddick film with Vin Diesel, is now circling a new time travel movie, which goes by the name of Replay. It's being funded by Relativity, and is based on the...

David Twohy during 2007 WGA Strike, Hollywood Blvd.
Riddick director David Twohy is staying in the sci-fi genre, signing on to direct Relativity Media's Replay.

We first reported on the project back in July, when Relativity picked up the then-untitled script by Joe Gazzam. That report revealed the plot will center on a father and son, although now we have new details. The story will follow Tyler Vaughn, a test subject in a quantum experiment who is sent four days into the future. There he learns that his son has been killed and he is the prime suspect in the murder. When that day ends, he's pulled back to the previous day, as he tries to solve his son's murder before he gets back to present day.

Ahmet Zappa, Alan Gasmer, Peter Jaysen and Ryan Kavanaugh are producing, with Tucker Tooley and Devon Schiff serving as executive producers. The filmmakers are eyeing an early 2015 production start for Replay.

'The Purge: Anarchy' Scarezone Coming to Halloween Horror Nights
Uma Noite de Crime: Anarquia (2014)
As the gates to "Halloween Horror Nights" open, so too does the annual Purge begin at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort with the debut of a terrifying new scarezone, The Purge: Anarchy, inspired by Universal Pictures' new thriller, which scored the highest opening for a horror film this year.

The Purge: Anarchy scarezone will greet guests with pure unadulterated fear, bringing to life the turmoil and pandemonium that awaits those vulnerable to masked vigilantes in search of new victims. Reimagining the movie's premise that on one night every year, any and all crime is made legal, the scarezone will be inhabited by average citizens transformed into sadistic felons during this period of government-sanctioned lawlessness. Like civilians in the movie fighting to survive, guests will be at the mercy of cunning wit, luck and speed as they attempt to outsmart and outlive the anarchy brought about by those...

Purge Yourself at Halloween Horror Nights
The Purge: Anarchy is kicking a respectable amount of ass at the box office with only some mighty Apes getting the better of it, and now this year's Halloween Horror Nights is ready to cause some anarchy of its own. Read on for details.

The Purge: Anarchy movie review: standing up to power and privilege
Doubles down on the first film’s angry approach to class, inequality, and violence, and once again reflects an image of America that is ugly but only slightly distorted. I’m “biast” (pro): loved the first film

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Last year, The Purge astonished me with one of the most daring speculative conceits to come out of a Hollywood studio in maybe forever, or certainly since the dystopic sci-fi of the 1970s. In a near-future America under what appears to be a religious dictatorship called the New Founding Fathers, all crime including murder is permitted — nay, encouraged — one night a year for a 12-hour period called the Purge. Vague religious justifications about “cleansing” smash up against the American “right” to be armed to the teeth and defend oneself against all threats, perceived or actual, with hints...

The HeyUGuys Instant Watching Guide – July 7th 2014
I’m back! It’s been a long time and I apologise for that, moving house turned out to be a far far longer process than I anticipated or had been led to believe. Three weeks turned into six, six weeks turned into three months and now here we are.

Aside from the length of time it takes, moving house was a real eye opener in other areas too. Specifically in terms of how I inform you week on week of all of this wonderful content available to stream and then how you have to put up with lacklustre delivery from various ISPs. I was living in someone else’s house on a connection that was not my own, not wanting to name names but there is one of the big three ISP’s in the UK which boasts about having one of, if not the, fastest broadband delivery on...

The top 25 underappreciated films of 2009
Odd List Ryan Lambie Simon Brew 20 Feb 2014 - 05:40

The unloved films of 2009 provide the focus in our final list of the 2000s' overlooked greats...

The year 2009 will partly be remembered as the year Avatar dominating the box office, with audiences flocking to see James Cameron's leafy pulp epic in shimmering 3D. Making almost $2.8bn worldwide, Avatar was a true behemoth, besting Cameron's own Titanic as the highest-grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation) and hastening a rush of 3D films in the years that followed.

Films such as 2012, Sherlock Holmes and boozy comedy The Hangover were also among the top 10, but as always, some of the most memorable and individual films of the year were far from the most financially successful. So to round off our series of underrated flicks of the 2000s, here's our selection of 2009's overlooked films...

25. A Perfect Getaway

New on DVD/Blu-ray: Getaway (2013)
Courtney Solomon’s “Getaway” is not to be confused with Sam Peckinpah’s 1972 movie “The Getaway”, or the 1994 Roger Donaldson remake starring Alec Baldwin, or the more recent 2009 thriller “A Perfect Getaway” by David Twohy. 2013′s “Getaway” is more “Fast and Furious” than caper film, and depending on your need for speed — you have one, right? — the film might just be up your alley. Just in case you fall into that category, “Getaway” speeds onto DVD/Blu-ray this November 26th. Former race car driver Brent Magna (Hawke) is pitted against the clock. Desperately trying to save the life of his kidnapped wife, Brent commandeers a custom Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake, taking it and its unwitting owner (Gomez) on a high-speed race against time, at the command of the mysterious villain holding his wife hostage. The best part about Courtney Solomona’s vehicular thriller is, without a doubt, watching Ethan Hawke...

The third movie in the science-fiction series, Riddick again stars Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious 6) in the titular role.

Diesel’s Riddick is still the most wanted man in the universe, and in this 2013 science fiction action film, he’s trapped on a sun-scorched planet and pursued by bounty hunters who are happy to capture Riddick alive or dead. Meanwhile, Riddick also has to survive savage alien creatures, hostile desert landscapes, monster storms, jet hogs and vast arrays of futuristic weaponry.

The R-rated movie also stars Karl Urban (Star Trek Into Darkness), Katee Sackhoff (TV’s Longmire), Jordi Molla (Colombiana), Bokeem Woodbine (Total Recall), WWE star Dave Bautista and two-time Grammy Award nominee Keri Lynn Hilson.

Chris Hemsworth: being a God
From Summer Bay to Asgard, he's in demand from directors such as Michael Mann and Jj Abrams, but he'll give the best part of the next decade to being Marvel's hammer-throwing superhero

Chris Hemsworth, Aka Thor, God of Thunder, crown prince of Asgard, calls me from the M25. It's 6pm, and he's just wrapped for the day on Ron Howard's In The Heart Of The Sea, a true story about a ship destroyed by a sperm whale in 1820. It's shooting at Leavesden Studios, and Hemsworth is in the car home to London, where he and his family have been living for the past few years while he's been making movies, including last month's F1 drama Rush. He'll be here into the spring too, for Avengers: Age Of Ultron. "It's the new Hollywood," he says of Greater London, taking care not to reference the weather.

Rated: Riddick (2013) - Fun Action, Just This Side of Mindless
Earlier last week (sorry for the late posting!) I got the chance to check out Universal’s Riddick, the latest entry into the Chronicles of Riddick franchise that everyone assumed was dead after a poor second film. Does this latest film manage to recapture the magic that made everyone fall in love with the titular character to begin with? Or does it fall short? Come inside to check out my thoughts on the film.

The Basics

Riddick, the latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000's hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy. The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a...

Director David Twohy Gets Bloody With ‘Riddick’
Riddick is clearly a passion project for writer/director David Twohy. The third entry in the series took its sweet time arriving to theaters, following 2004′s underwhelming The Chronicles of Riddick, but while that sequel has its fan, it didn’t stay in touch with what arguably made the first movie (Pitch Black) so appealing. Riddick isn’t a blockbuster character but an antihero monster slayer. We see the character return to those simple animalistic traits in the new film where he faces off against a batch of mercenaries and monsters on an unknown planet. But it wasn’t easy getting there. Twohy more than likely could have made a bigger sequel with a PG-13 slapped on, but he set his sights on a dirty R-rated Riddick film. And we’re all the better for it. Here’s our chat with Riddick director David Twohy: Both A Perfect Getaway and Riddick seem like a “back to...

Riddick is back...and angry in three new clips
Our favourite anti-hero and survivalist Riddick (Vin Diesel) has awoken in a hostile world of lethal alien predators in his latest on-screen chapter, Riddick, opening in theatres on Friday.

Following in the footsteps of Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, this new movie picks up with Riddick fighting for his survival after being left for dead on a desolate and sun-scorched planet by the Necromancers.  Now finding himself a target for bounty hunters, figures from his past will play a role in his ultimate act of revenge.

Karl Urban, Bokeem Woodbine and Katee Sackhoff  appear alongside Diesel in this latest movie, directed by David Twohy who helmed the previous Riddick movies and thriller A Perfect Getaway.

The Weekend Warrior: Riddick
Summer's officially over and fall's here, and while the box office tends to take a major nosedive .round about now, there's always a chance of a breakout hit, especially with summer ending on such a weak note. At least that's what Universal Pictures is hoping by releasing the third installment of Vin Diesel's dark sci-fi epic that began back in 2000 with Pitch Black with that film's breakout character returning for Riddick , the weekend's only major wide release. Riddick (Universal Pictures) Starring Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Jordi Molla, Matt Nable, Katee Sackhoff, Bokeem Woodbine, Dave Bautista, Conrad Pla, Raoul Trujillo, Nolan Funk, Keri Hilson Written and directed by David Twohy ( Pitch Black , The Chronicles of Riddick , Below , A Perfect Getaway ) Genre: Action,...

New ‘Riddick’ Featurette
A new featurette is now online for “Riddick,” the third installment of his beloved sci-fi “Pitch Black” film series from filmmaker David Twohy. The featurette explores the world of the upcoming sequel.

The latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000′s hit sci-fi film “Pitch Black” and 2004′s “The Chronicles of Riddick” reunites writer/director David Twohy (“A Perfect Getaway,” “The Fugitive”) and star Vin Diesel (the “Fast and Furious” franchise, “XXX”). Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy.

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to...

New Featurette for Riddick
Universal has released new featurette for the sci-fi/action film, Riddick. It opens with a slight contradiction between Vin Diesel and director David Twohy. Diesel says "We always wanted it to be three films," but then Twohy follows with "It was a question of where do we go next?" The implication of a trilogy signals that they knew how it would be resolved, but clearly that wasn't the case. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Just because a film is planned that doesn't mean the final result will be good and vice versa. This featurette contains new footage, and does a good job of laying out the story without giving too much away, although there is no alien-puppy-saving. Hit the jump to check out the featurette. The film also stars Katee Sackhoff, David Bautista, Jordi Mollà, Matt Nable, Bokeem Woodbine, Raoul Trujillo, Nolan Gerard Funk, and Karl Urban. Riddick opens September 6th.
