‘MobLand’ Emmys Shakeup: Tom Hardy and Pierce Brosnan Both Submitted for Lead Drama Actor, Helen Mirren Goes for Supporting (Exclusive)
Image
Paramount+ is going all-in on its critically acclaimed British crime drama “MobLand.”

Revealed to Variety exclusively, the company is launching an ambitious Emmy campaign that surprisingly places both Tom Hardy and Pierce Brosnan in the running for lead drama actor. The decision to push Brosnan as a co-lead — rather than a supporting contender as many had assumed — is one of several surprising moves in the streamer’s Emmy strategy.

Helen Mirren, meanwhile, will compete for supporting drama actress, avoiding a head-to-head clash with her own work in “1923,” Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama, where she is considered a possible contender for lead drama actress.

Created by Ronan Bennett, “MobLand” centers on Harry Da Souza (Hardy), a fixer for the powerful London-based Harrigan crime family, led by Conrad (Brosnan) and Maeve Harrigan (Mirren). As rival gangs threaten the family’s empire, Harry is tasked with maintaining control and preventing a full-scale war.

Pathé Mulls Return To Film Development & Production In The UK: “We Miss It Too Much”
Image
Exclusive: French mini-major Pathé sent shockwaves through the UK cinema industry in 2023 when it emerged it was pulling out of film distribution and production in the country to focus uniquely on scripted TV series in the territory.

The move coincided with the retirement of longtime Pathé UK cinema-focused head Cameron McCracken and left Faith Penhale in charge as managing director of the refocused TV development and production subsidiary.

The development of English-language projects was shifted over to the Pathé HQ in Paris.

The French studio’s retreat from UK cinema was regarded as the end of an era. Pathé UK had left its mark on the local and international cinema landscape, having supported titles such as Slumdog Mllionaire, The Queen, The Iron Lady, Philomena and The Great Escaper, to name a few.

Two years later, Pathé President Ardavan Safaee has revealed that the company is mulling a return to film...

Ethan Hawke and Margaret Qualley in Blue Moon (2025)
Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon Secures October Release Amid Cannes Spotlight
Ethan Hawke and Margaret Qualley in Blue Moon (2025)
Sony Pictures Classics has scheduled Blue Moon, Richard Linklater’s latest film, for release on October 17 in New York and Los Angeles, with a broader rollout planned for October 24. The biographical drama centers on lyricist Lorenz Hart, one half of the iconic Rodgers and Hart songwriting duo, during a pivotal evening in 1943.

Set almost entirely at Sardi’s Restaurant, the film unfolds on the night Oklahoma! premiered on Broadway—Rodgers’ first collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein II after parting ways with Hart. Ethan Hawke plays Hart, who reflects on his legacy and confronts the emotional toll of professional displacement. The cast includes Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott.

The story takes place over a single night, capturing the personal and artistic reckoning of a man witnessing the reshaping of American musical theater without his involvement. Hawke and Linklater, long-time collaborators, team up for the ninth time on this project. Their...

Losing Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen) on House of the Dragon was "wrenching" for her castmates
Image
Steve Toussaint plays experienced seafarer Corlys Velaryon on House of the Dragon. In the first season, we watched Corlys' life play out over several years; he lost both of his adult children, and at the end of the season lost one of his grandchildren. He's been through it, and will likely still be smarting when the show returns for a third season.

Looking back on season 2, Toussaint named the loss of Corlys' wife Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best) as the thing he remembers most. "I know it sounds silly because we're just acting, but it's the most wrenching thing that she will not be there to continue the journey with me and the rest of us," he told Gold Derby. "And then it's trying to portray several kinds of grief throughout the season, because at the beginning, he's still grieving his children and his grandchild, and then in the middle of that season — wham!

Matthew Goode Is Promoted to 'Dept. Q' in Trailer for 'The Queen's Gambit' Creator's New Mystery Series
Image
Matthew Goode is ready to rattle some cages in the official trailer for Dept. Q. In less than one month, Netflix will debut the new detective series from The Queen's Gambit creator Scott Frank that features the A Discovery of Witches star as Dci Carl Morck, who's described as "a brilliant cop, but a terrible colleague" with no allies in the Edinburgh police and a lot of guilt on his conscience. A shooting that killed a young officer and paralyzed his partner leaves him feeling responsible, and matters only get worse when his bosses "promote" him to the head of a new department dedicated to cold cases. However, the new basement office is just a PR front to distract an unsatisfied public from their failures. Yet, the footage sees him rising to the occasion and finding new energy with a new team of misfits, making real strides on a long-unsolved case.

House of the Dragon season 3 star teases epic battle: 'We don't think it's ever been done on television'
Image
The wait for House of the Dragon season 3 rages on, and all of us fans are gobbling up any crumb of a spoiler we can until the glorious day arrives when we can watch new episodes. Lately, there have been mostly casting announcements keeping us fed, but series star Steve Toussaint recently sat down for an interview with Gold Derby and shared some interesting tidbits.

Gold Derby chatted with Toussaint, who plays Corlys Velaryon in HBO's hit Game of Thrones prequel series, about a wide variety of topics regarding the series: from the set of his character's ship The Queen Who Never Was to his wardrobe to Corlys' secret sons revealed in season 2. But the biggest takeaway from his interview was his tease about season 3 featuring something that one of the directors thinks has "ever been done on television before." Talk about getting us excited for the new season!

‘I fully expected to be killed off!’ Helen Mirren on her twin roles in ‘1923’ and ‘MobLand’
Image
She’s reigned (literally) over us for years, playing the queen (among dozens of other roles) in features and series. Now Helen Mirren is bringing that royal presence to TV screens with two performances that couldn’t be more different: Cara Dutton on 1923 and Maeve Harrigan on MobLand.

Even 1923 showrunner Taylor Sheridan wanted to know how he managed to convince her to appear in his series, asking Gold Derby to share his question. “By his writing!” she says, though she admits she said yes without seeing any scripts.

“Both Harrison [Ford] and I, for the first time in our lives, had to commit without reading a single word of the characters or the story or anything. Because Taylor said he likes to write for the actor that he's got, he likes to write knowing who he's writing for, which I thought was very interesting.”

But for Sheridan, she was willing to take the chance.

House of the Dragon season 3 does something that's never "been done on television before"
Image
The cast of crew and HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon are filming the third season as we speak, and we've heard a lot of talk about a major battle scene coming up very early in the season, probably in the first episode. It's the Battle of the Gullet, a ship-to-ship navel conflict that was originally supposed to serve as the climax for season 2, but which got pushed back. Now, the cast and crew are laboring to bring to life what showrunner Ryan Condal called "probably the most complex sequence that's ever been done for television."

Those are big words, but they're backed up by members of the cast. Steve Toussaint plays Corlys Velaryon, an experienced seafarer who will play a key role in the battle. "Not to give any spoilers, but I've spoken to Loni Peristere, one of our directors, and he said, 'What we're doing in this particular episode,...

Brands Are Subtly Embracing Hollywood — and Filmmakers Want to Work with Them
Image
Before Hailey Gates made her Sundance-winning feature film “Atropia,” the young filmmaker was attempting to make a short film, “Shako Mako,” based on the real-life military training village she ended up depicting in the feature. The fashion brand Miu Miu, as part of its Women’s Tales filmmakers series, helped make it happen. The brand provided clothing, some financing, and other resources, but — above all — was hands-off with the creative.

An Afghanistan War satire might not seem like a particularly relevant brand association for an upscale fashion line, but for Miu Miu, just being in Gates’ orbit makes an impact. Jett Steiger and Lana Kim, who produced “Atropia” via banner Ways & Means, said it’s all about brands trying to find authentic ways to engage with consumers: making content their customers would want to watch, dispatching cool female filmmakers to parties, and using those connections to fuel good PR.

Babe review – tale of the talking sheep-pig a charming relic of its time
James Cromwell
A startling novelty 30 years ago, the film’s now antique effects and strange anti-Orwell farmyard tale feel dated, but is still a quaintly comfortable place to visit

Thirty years ago, a non-Disney talking-animal adventure became a big movie talking point. Babe, adapted from Dick King-Smith’s children’s book The Sheep-Pig, features an adorable piglet who is rescued from a brutally realistic-looking agribusiness breeding shed as his mum and siblings are taken off to be slaughtered; it is then rehomed in a quaintly old-fashioned farm with lots of different animals, situated in an uncanny-valley landscape of rolling green hills which looks like Olde England but where everyone speaks in an American accent. The lead human is grumpy cap-wearing Farmer Hoggett, played by James Cromwell, later to be hard-faced Captain Dudley Smith in LA Confidential and Prince Philip in Stephen Frears’ film The Queen. The little piglet does his best to...

‘MobLand’ Episode 1 Recap & Ending Explained: Did Conrad Kill Archie?
Image
The first episode of MobLand opens with Tom Hardy’s Harry Da Souza mediating some kind of dispute between two gangs, the Dogans and the Lazarous. It’s only after Harry is sure that the gang leaders, Costa and Mehmet, are ready to shake hands and bury the hatchet that he consults his boss, Conrad Harrigan (being played by the amazing Pierce Brosnan), regarding the next step. Now, Harry thinks that this agreement between the Dogans and the Lazarous isn’t going to last very long. Meanwhile, Conrad reveals that both Costa and Mehmet have been scamming him. Hence, apparently the best decision is to kill them all. While Harry and his associates get the job done, Conrad arrives to put the finishing touches and tells Harry to inform the Maltese that they’ll be filling the gap that’s been left by the death of the Dogans and the Lazarous.

Every Season Of Netflix's The Crown, Ranked
Image
In its heyday, "The Crown" represented every shiny thing that streaming-era TV could be. With precise and powerful storytelling, a cast full of stars-in-the-making, and cinematic flair, the historical drama from "The Queen" writer Peter Morgan was as aesthetically masterful and emotionally potent as it was bingeable. The show's early seasons were an awards season powerhouse and a clear-cut case of must-watch TV in an increasingly crowded programming slate.

If this sounds like a eulogy, it's because the best parts of "The Crown" seemed to die with its subject. Where the show's ambitious earlier seasons revealed shattering truths and scathing critiques through restrained performances and symbolic imagery, its later chapters often flailed under the pressure of approaching the present day. In its old age, the show reused its original tricks in increasingly obvious and unconvincing ways, becoming as obsolete to the streaming landscape as its monarch did to the modern world.

Thessaloniki Documentary Festival Head on Power of Art to ‘Preserve Reality’ With Truth, Democracy Under Threat
Image
As the Thessaloniki Intl. Documentary Festival prepares to host its 27th edition, which runs March 6 – 16, festival director Orestis Andreadakis sees no shortage of threats to truth, freedom and the values on which the democratic order is based. “Four months have passed since the [Thessaloniki Intl. Film Festival], but it seems like we’re already living in a completely different world — unfortunately, not a better one,” Andreadakis tells Variety.

Likening the times to “a historical documentary about the 1930s, screened backwards,” he describes world events as “an educational documentary that taught us nothing. It is a testimony for the horror of fascism and totalitarianism that it seems we have forgotten,” he continues. “It is a film record of a horrific historical reality that some are trying to repeat in the worst possible way.”

This year’s festival begins hardly a fortnight after Russia’s war in Ukraine marked its three-year anniversary, and as a tenuous...

Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, & Helen Mirren wield the power of a deadly family in the trailer for Guy Ritchie’s MobLand series
Image
For some, family is everything. If you cross them in any way, there will be hell to pay. It is the nature of things, especially when your family wields power like a sword waiting to slice dissenters in twain. Today, Paramount+ is ready to give Guy Ritchie fans a taste of the filmmaker’s next star-studded series, Mobland, starring Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosman, and Helen Mirren. Paramount’s MobLand trailer is an explosive look at what happens when the wrong people think they can change the pecking order of a well-oiled criminal empire. Good luck with that, friend.

MobLand debuts on Paramount+ on March 30. It centers around two warring families based in London whose enterprises stretch across the globe and the fiercely loyal “fixer” charged with protecting one of them at all costs.

In MobLand, Pierce Brosnan stars as Conrad Harrigan, patriarch of the crime family, with Helen Mirren playing Maeve Harrigan,...

'1923's Best Character Is Exactly Who You Think It Is
Image
Following a two-year TV absence, Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone spin-off 1923 finally hit Paramount+ on February 23, 2025. As viewers peer into past Dutton family generations as the economic boom of the roaring twenties screeches to a crashing halt with the stock market crash and the Great Depression, one character remains steadfast in their dutiful resolve: Cara Dutton, played by the inimitable Academy Award-winning Dame Helen Mirren.

A compassionate parental figure and often the voice of reason who talks her husband out of foolish decisions, Cara Dutton is arguably the bravest and boldest character in 1923, willing to do anything necessary to protect her family. Beyond such qualities shown in both season debuts, Mirren is arguably the only cast member with the gravitas to steal Harrison Ford's movie star thunder. With only six more 1923 episodes, Cara Dutton should get the proper send-off she deserves.

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in November of 1989, James Bond has struggled with his own relevance. "Licence to Kill" was released that same year, but it proved to be the last James Bond movie for six years. Eon Productions scrambled to came out with "GoldenEye" in 1995, starring Pierce Brosnan, the best James Bond. "GoldenEye" featured a scene wherein M (Judi Dench) told 007 right to his face that he was a remnant of an earlier time, and the bad guys were merely ex-Soviets who tried to keep the Cold War going as best they could. Energy for the war, "GoldenEye" pointed out, had waned.

Brosnan starred in four films as James Bond, but he ran into another relevancy problem after the events of September 11, 2001. During the George W. Bush administration, wars began anew, and Bond's slick, lighthearted spy shenanigans no longer seemed relevant. Eon Productions attempt to adapt with...

Lynne Marie Stewart Dies: ‘Pee-wee’s Playhouse’ & ‘It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’ Actress Was 78
Image
Lynne Marie Stewart, the actress known for roles in Pee-wee’s Playhouse and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, has died. She was 78.

Elvira star Cassandra Peterson was one of several to pay tribute to the actress Friday on Instagram after coming up together at The Groundlings in Los Angeles and appearing in Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988) and The Elvira Show (1993) together.

“My heart is breaking upon hearing the news of my dear friend @lynnestewart78 Lynne Stewart’s passing,” wrote Peterson on Instagram. “One of the kindest, sweetest, funniest women who ever lived. The iconic Miss Yvonne of Pee-wee’s Playhouse: She’ll always be ‘the most beautiful woman in Puppetland.'”

Born Dec. 14, 1946 in L.A., Stewart was a member of The Groundlings in the ’70s, where she met Peterson, Paul Reubens and Phil Hartman.

Stewart was most known and beloved for playing Miss Yvonne and other roles in Reubens’ Pee-wee franchise,...

The Gorge
Image
The title of this movie is the two-word answer to a most unexpected question. Namely: “What do you get if you cross American Sniper, The Last Of Us, Stranger Things, Aliens and Love Actually?” Writer Zach Dean appears unashamed of his influences on this former Black List spec script, and director Scott Derrickson has much fun with them, serving up a frothy B-pic stew. By the time we reach the wink-at-the-audience montage that depicts Miles ‘Whiplash’ Teller and The Queen’s Gambit’s Anya Taylor-Joy bonding over drumming and chess, there is no doubt left that The Gorge can’t, and shouldn’t, be taken too seriously.

The set-up is a doozy. Teller and Taylor-Joy are sexy-but-damaged elite operatives whisked to a super-remote top-secret location by Sigourney Weaver, guest-starring as the token untrustworthy boss-person. Their year-long mission? To stand sentinel over an eerie chasm which may or may not be “the door to Hell”. Only,...

Jeremy Strong to Star in ‘The Boys From Brazil’ TV Series at Netflix From Peter Morgan
Image
Jeremy Strong is set to star in Netflix’s upcoming series “The Boys From Brazil,” which hails from “The Crown” creator Peter Morgan, according to media reports.

Strong will star in the series, which is based on Ira Levin’s 1976 novel of the same name. The novel, which centers on infamous Nazi hunter Yakov Liebermann, was adapted into a 1978 film directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, which starred Gregory Peck and Laurence Olivier.

“The Boys From Brazil” marks Strong’s next TV role after starring in HBO’s “Succession” as Kendall Roy. His performance in the drama series, which also starred Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, Brian Cox and Matthew Macfadyen, scored Strong three Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, which he won in 2020.

Strong is expected to star as Liebermann, the role played by Olivier in the film.

Netflix declined to comment.

The Boys from Brazil: Jeremy Strong, Peter Morgan team for Netflix series adaptation of Ira Levin conspiracy novel
Image
Back in 1976, Rosemary’s Baby and The Stepford Wives author Ira Levin brought the world a conspiracy novel called The Boys from Brazil – and since Levin’s works had previously proven to be the makings of successful film adaptations, it’s no surprise that The Boys from Brazil was quickly turned into a movie. Released in 1978, that feature adaptation of the novel was directed by Franklin J. Schaffner from a screenplay by Heywood Gould and starred Gregory Peck, Laurence Olivier (who received an Oscar nomination for his performance), Steve Guttenberg, and James Mason. That film isn’t quite as popular as Rosemary’s Baby or The Stepford Wives, but it has a strong following – and now Deadline reports that the Netflix streaming service is set to build on that following with a series adaptation of Levin’s novel.

This new take on The Boys from Brazil is being written by Peter Morgan,...

Jeremy Strong to Star in ‘Boys From Brazil’ Netflix Series From ‘The Crown’s’ Peter Morgan
Image
Jeremy Strong is set to lead a series adaptation of the Ira Levin novel “The Boys From Brazil” at Netflix, Variety has confirmed.

The project hails from Peter Morgan, the creator of the critically-acclaimed Netflix series “The Crown.” Morgan is writing the adaptation and will executive produce along with Suzanne Mackie of Orchid Pictures.

Reps for Netflix declined to comment.

Morgan revealed he was working on a series take on “The Boys From Brazil” in an interview with Variety in 2024. The novel was originally published in 1976 and was subsequently turned into a film starring Gregory Peck and Laurence Olivier in 1978.

In the novel, Nazi hunter Yakov Liebermann receives a tip that the notorious Dr. Josef Mengele is alive and living under an assumed name in Brazil. Liebermann travels to the South American country to track down the so called “Angel of Death,” only to discover a sinister conspiracy at work.

Michael Sheen's Underworld Role Is The Actor's Most Underrated (& Why He Should Be Doing More Dark Fantasy)
Image
While the vampire Selene is often Underworlds main protagonist, Michael Sheens Lucian is a compelling and formidable character who is severely underrated. In the dark urban fantasy franchise, which pits vampires against werewolves, Sheen appeared in Underworld (2003) and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009). Despite their thrilling high-octane fight sequences and impressive special effects, neither movie was a hit with critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, Underworld holds a score of 31%, with Rise of the Lycans at 30%. Even so, Sheen has never been accused of phoning in a performance, and his portrayal of Lucian is no exception.

Sheens TV and film career has given him an eclectic variety of roles to work with. His performances in acclaimed films such as The Queen and Frost/Nixon were lauded by critics, as was his role as Dr. William Masters in the TV series Masters of Sex. In recent years, many know him as the angel Aziraphale from Good Omens,...

Ridley Scott and 14 Other Directors Over 80 Still Making Movies
Image
At 86, Ridley Scott is on the cusp of releasing one of the biggest films of his career — “Gladiator II” — and already has at least two additional projects lined up for 2025, a reteam with Paul Mescal and a Bee Gees biopic. With no signs of slowing down.

He’s not the only Hollywood veteran who’s still making movies: Martin Scorsese, who turned 82 this year, made one of the best films of his career with “Killers of the Flower Moon” while Clint Eastwood (94) has what might be his final film, “Juror #2” in theaters now.

Here are 15 directors over 80 who are still busy making movies.

The prolific director of “Goodfellas,” and “The Departed” was Oscar-nominated again for his 2023 historic epic, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and is now developing two films: “The Life of Jesus” and a movie about Frank Sinatra. He also returned to documentaries...

This Overlooked Thriller With 94% on Rotten Tomatoes Is a Thought-Provoking Nailbiter
Image
It is entirely possible to have a captivating thriller without chase scenes, shoot-outs, explosions, or high-octane action. That's what Stephen Frears' 2002 bold British social thriller Dirty Pretty Things with its impressive 94% nod on Rotten Tomatoes clearly demonstrates. Set against the still globally relevant subject of overlooked immigrants with London at its epicenter, the film is a statement about the inhumanity of immigration procedures, castigating how people have become secondary to processes. Through his picture, Frears confronts nationalism and argues that people's nationality, whatever that may be, should not precede humanity. He weaves this argument through a narrative that is heart-pounding and full of tension; about survival, morality, and exploitation. This boldness is not surprising coming from a director who isn't afraid to explore different genres, including helming projects like High Fidelity and The Queen as well as some of the most memorable TV series, such as the historical drama A Very English Scandal and Quiz.

Prince Harry’s latest solo appearance features a nod to Meghan Markle
Prince Harry
Prince Harry had yet another appearance without his wife, Meghan Markle, or his children, Prince Archie or Princess Lilibet, in attendance.

He has recently traveled the world solo, while Meghan has stayed home doing her own thing closer to her kids. It seems that Prince Harry is continuing alone.

Prince Harry and Meghan spent Valentine’s Day together while working for their Invictus Games charity, but Prince Harry worked alone at a new event for the same charity.

Meghan has tried several ways to launch her lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, but to no avail. The royal couple needs to generate income somehow, and this new solo traveling may be it.

Prince Harry and Meghan may be trying to rebrand themselves as single entities rather than as a couple since their “couple” brand of Harry and Meghan isn’t working well for them.

Despite this new strategy the royal couple may be employing,...

White Bird: Helen Mirren's Sequel to Julia Roberts' $315M Movie Is Finally Coming To VOD
Image
White Bird, a follow-up to 2017's Wonder, has set a digital release date. Directed by Marc Forster, the film expands the Wonder universe, which grossed $315 million globally. While Wonder focused on Auggie Pullman's challenges with Treacher Collins syndrome in a middle school setting, White Bird shifts to a historical narrative centered on Auggie's bully, Julian (played by Bryce Gheisar), who visits his grandmother (Helen Mirren) in France following his expulsion from school and learns of her survival story during the Nazi occupation of France in World War II.

After a limited theatrical run earlier this month, the digital release on VOD offers White Bird a renewed opportunity to connect with home audiences. According to Collider, the movie will be available at home starting on November 1. Viewers will be able to either rent or buy the movie, which is based on the novel by Wonder author R.J. Palacio.
