Rumiko Takahashi’s Inuyasha is a tale that spans several anime seasons and hundreds of manga chapters. For many, it is their first exposure to the world of anime and manga or Japanese culture as a whole. Needless to say, it has left a deep impact on plenty of young minds.

But plenty of Shonen series from the same era did not age well. Due to the constantly evolving nature of anime and the world at large, plenty of classics can feel outdated. Some of the genre’s best picks have not aged well, with writing that feels out of touch. But Inuyasha has beaten the odds even though it is not perfect.

Why Inuyasha aged like fine wine

Firstly, let’s acknowledge the fact that Inuyasha isn’t the gold standard of anime/manga and has its own faults. It features a few questionable relationships and some uncomfortable moments between characters.

In the world of Shonen manga, the bane of fans’ existence is unnecessary filler episodes. These are extra content within the anime adaptation that weren’t originally included in the manga. One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach are the franchises most notorious for implementing too much into their adaptations since it would outpace the source.

There are, however, a few hidden gems that deserve more recognition for their amazing filler episodes. Their percentage of filler episodes isn’t too high, and when an episode occurs, it only enriches the storyline rather than being a useless addition. Inuyasha is the prime example of a Shonen series that did it right.

During its release, Inuyasha was incredibly popular for its unique storyline, combined with strong characters, and how it caters to several audiences. The filler episodes are rarely a distraction from the main storyline, too. What makes the additional content worth watching?

Anime fans are noting that Tite Kubo, the writer and artist of Bleach, is not involved in an anniversary project at Shonen Jump that honors a controversial manga author. Despite Nobuhiro Watsuki's 2017 arrest and 2018 conviction for possessing child pornography, Shonen Jump and most of its top creators will celebrate Watsuki's Rurouni Kenshin series for its 30th anniversary.

Shueisha organizes the Jump Festa annually for fans, an event that gives the stage to all the series that publish in the Jump magazines. The yearly event brings along a wide range of announcements about different manga titles; some exciting, others lukewarm. Fans eagerly wait for the event to finally get updates on their favorite series. Scheduled for December 21 and 22, the official poster for Jump Festa 2025 has been revealed.

All the major shonen titles are present on the poster, except for Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto. There’s no sign of either Naruto or Boruto on the entire poster. This fact becomes more concerning when one looks at the more obscure titles on the poster. Kishimoto fans are not happy with this development and are voicing their frustrations on the internet.

Japanese director Tanigaki Kenji has completed production in Bangkok, Thailand, on his upcoming film “The Furious,” intended as an elite-level Asian martial arts actioner.

Written by Mak Tin Shu, the film follows a simple tradesman (portrayed by mainland Chinese star Xie Miao) who fights his way through a complex web of criminals and evil agents in a frantic attempt to win back his kidnapped daughter by any means necessary.

Fans' favorite Rurouni Kenshin franchise is back with another season of the hit anime series of the same name, with a special trailer and official poster released over the weekend. The upcoming season titled Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Riot is set to premiere later this year and will see the return of the beloved eponymous swordsman, as revealed in the teaser below. Warner Bros Discovery has signed a first-look deal with veteran executive Jack Nguyen and has set their first project as a Korean remake of US comedy-drama The Intern.

The agreement was made through Nguyen’s Joat Films and will focus on Asia-centric features with an emphasis on local-language remakes of Warner Bros’ English-language titles.

The inaugural project will be a Korean remake of The Intern, the 2015 film that starred Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway and took nearly $195m at the worldwide box office.

Nguyen previously spent 30 years at Warner Bros, stepping down in November 2020 as senior vice president of local productions and acquisitions.

Warner Bros. Discovery (Wbd) has revealed a first-look deal with industry veteran Jack Nguyen, with a Korean remake of the 2015 comedy-drama “The Intern” set as the inaugural project. The agreement, made through Nguyen’s Joat Films, focuses on Asia-centric film projects, particularly local-language remakes of Wbd’s English-language titles.

Nguyen will collaborate with local partners across the Asia-Pacific region, including Korea and India. Kurt Rieder, senior VP, head of theatrical distribution, Apac, Wbd, highlighted the strong appetite for Hollywood story remakes in the region.

With the spring 2024 season nearly halfway through, the upcoming summer anime are already getting release dates. Among these is 2.5 Dimensional Seduction which revealed its July release date and theme songs.

While the anime was announced back in December 2022, it was only earlier this year that its premiere and other details were revealed.

With the show’s release just around a month-and-a-half away, the theme songs have finally been announced.

Performing the show’s opening theme Shutter Chance is Meychan, a popular singer from Japan. He is also known for performing the ending theme of the High Card anime.

So, to hear him getting into high gear with a pitch for his bucket list martial arts movie project “The Furious” immediately invites comparison with previous Kong-produced action pictures including Oscar-winner “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “Jet Li’s Fearless” or the Zhang Yimou-directed “Hero.”

“I’m going to do an action movie that rocks the world. And to prove that Hong Kong still has something to give the film industry. I want to show that Asian people can still make an action movie that is better than the rest of the world,” Kong tells Variety.

Significantly, “The Furious” is a project made by Hong Kong, rather than made in Hong Kong. Kong’s Edko Films is financing and producing.

Each new episode of Shōgun raises the stakes, deepens the political intrigue, and brings us closer to the brink of war. There's always a gateway or jumping off point that captures the human imagination. International sensations, for example, are the kind of thing that can be a gateway to learning new cultures and languages. A lot of good can come out of spreading a new form of media for people to enjoy. Taking risks is half the fun of enjoying art in general, and animation is absolutely no exception to that rule. Anime has boomed in the last two decades in the West and that is in no small part because of Toonami.

The Toonami programming block on Cartoon Network in the late '90s and early '00s was a cultural touchstone point that deserves to be studied more closely. Anime shifted from being a niche hobby that was supplied by fandubs and overseas courier services to something that has brought together many people from many different walks of life.

In the latest surge of live action adaptations that Netflix seems to lead, either in movie or series format, an essentially forgotten anime and manga from the 90s, was not exactly something that was expected, considering that the rest were based on all time favorites like “One Piece” and “Rurouni Kenshin” for example. It turns out, though, that the manga being one of the best selling of all times played a crucial role, and that is how we ended up with a version of “Yu Yu Hakusho”.

Recently, the producers have confirmed that the second season of Rurouni Kenshin will premiere in October 2024 on Fuji TV and that it will run for two consecutive cours, which probably means that it will have 24-26 episodes. Veteran animator Terumi Nishii is pressing for better conditions in Japan's anime industry, alleging that full-time workers are currently "more like slaves."

Nishii has worked in anime for over 20 years, contributing to the production of popular shows like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Rurouni Kenshin. In an interview with Anime News Network, Nishii explained that there are a number of major issues plaguing anime studios across the board, such as a lack of union support, the frequent hiring of underqualified personnel and physically taxing shifts for full-time employees. With over 72 million copies of the comic series sold and a total box office revenue of 19.3 billion yen from the live-action movie series, the legendary masterpiece loved by all generations worldwide, Rurouni Kenshin comes back to life as a brand-new TV anime in 2023.

The original work was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1994, and in 1996 it was made into a TV anime for the first time. Since then, it has undergone numerous developments, from OVAs to theatrical releases, and now with Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arc serializing in Jump Sq.

This long-awaited work aims to reconstruct the original story from the first episode using the latest animation technology, to create a Rurouni Kenshin anime that will appeal to current anime fans.

Still riding high on the success of “The Roundup,” Korean indie film producer and seller K-Movie Entertainment, is showcasing a slate of 16 movies at the Asian and Contents Film Market, part of the Busan International Film Festival.

The company has two titles featuring Don Lee (“The Eternals”) including the previously announced “The Roundup: No Way Out,” the third instalment of the Crime City film series. The second film is the highest grossing film of this year in Korea, with a 100 million total. Japanese animation or “anime” as it is commonly known, has been a major part of the mainstream entertainment since the 80s, when they experienced a boom in production. In the following decades, anime became a global phenomenon, and currently over 430 production companies are involved in an industry that has a total market value of $13.5 billion.
