Black Tides: Renny Harlin to direct survival thriller based on real-life orca attacks
Renny Harlin at an event for O Exorcista: O Início (2004)
Wikipedia informs us that, between the years of 2020 and 2024, “2020 to 2024, “there were at least five hundred reports of orcas interacting with boats off the Atlantic coast of Spain and Portugal, an unusual and unprecedented behavior.” And Deadline reports that Renny Harlin, whose directing credits include Deep Blue Sea, Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, and The Strangers: Chapter 1 (as well as the yet-to-be-released Chapters 2 and 3), has signed on to direct the survival thriller Black Tides, which is inspired by the real-life orca attacks.

Written by Chris Sparling (Buried) and Ángel Agudo (Apocalypse Z), the film will tell the story of Rebecca, who reunites with her estranged father, Bill, in sunny Málaga expecting a healing family trip with her young son, Sebastian. Instead, their voyage across the Strait of Gibraltar becomes a nightmare as they’re relentlessly attacked by rogue orcas. Rebecca, confronting deep emotional wounds,...

Lisa Wilcox interview: A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 and 5 heroine looks back on her battles with Freddy Krueger
Heather Langenkamp in A Hora do Pesadelo (1984)
The A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has some of the best heroines of the horror genre – and my personal favorite of the Elm Street heroines is Alice Johnson, played by Lisa Wilcox in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master and A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child. JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was able to catch up with Wilcox at the Ve Neill’s Vampire Weekend convention in California last month and talked with her about her encounters with Freddy Krueger and the experience of working on those classic ’80s horror films. You can hear what Wilcox had to say by checking out the video embedded above.

Directed by Renny Harlin from a screenplay by Brian Helgeland, Ken Wheat, and Jim Wheat (with Helgeland also sharing story credit with William Kotzwinkle), A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master has the following synopsis: Your fave psycho-sandman is back!

Saw 11 Officially Pulled From Release Calendar, Another Horror Sequel Takes Its Place
Image
A once pulse-pounding horror franchise has flatlined. Jigsaw's next killing spree was officially shelved on Monday after Lionsgate removed Saw 11 from its schedule and swapped in horror sequel The Strangers: Chapter 2 in its place.

Originally intended for a Fall 2024 release, the sequel was punted to the Sept. 26, 2025 date that The Strangers sequel now inherits. Despite the track record of delays, the latest puts the franchise's future in flux. Production warfare has plagued the project since its Spring 2024 announcement. Saw 11 co-writer Patrick Melton provided insight into the stall, telling The Hollywood Reporter:

“The reason it’s held up is just, there’s inter-squabbling between producers and Lionsgate. They just can’t quite get on the same page.”

Producers Can't Crack Jigsaw Puzzle, Lionsgate Silently Kills Saw 11 "It's 100% Over."

The grim update gets bleaker. According to Bloody Disgusting, a source "verified as being close to the production of its newest sequel.

'Saw XI’ Just Got Slashed Off Lionsgate’s Release Calendar
Image
Like the extremities of one of Jigsaw's victims, Saw XI has been sliced off the release calendar. The Hollywood Reporter has the news that the troubled horror sequel will no longer be released on September 26, 2025. It has been ceded to an entry in another long-running horror franchise: The Strangers: Chapter 2 will now see a wide release on that date.

It was previously reported last week that Saw XI, the follow-up to 2023's franchise-reviving Saw X, was effectively dead at Lionsgate after coming to a standstill amid squabbling among its producers. The removal of the film from the release calendar would seem to confirm that, but Lionsgate insists that, unlike John Kramer, the movie isn't as dead as it appears. In a statement purported to be from series mascot Billy the Puppet, the studio stated that "I’ve seen the rumors. They say it’s Game Over. You all...

‘The Strangers: Chapter 2’ to Slash into Theaters This September
Image
Lionsgate’s franchise reboot The Strangers: Chapter 1 kicked off a new trilogy of terror last year and is now set to continue this September with The Strangers: Chapter 2, revealed today by the film’s social media channels.

The Strangers: Chapter 2 is taking over the spot Lionsgate previously designated for Saw XI: September 26, 2025.

In The Strangers: Chapter 1, “After their car breaks down in an eerie small town, a young couple are forced to spend the night in a remote cabin. Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motive.”

The Strangers: Chapter 2 will continue the story of Madelaine Petsch’s character, Maya, who survived the events of The Strangers: Chapter 1.

“I promise that we’re making The Strangers: Chapter 2 as terrifying as possible, and I can’t wait to show you on September 26,” Petsch said in an announcement video.

Novocaine Is More Proof That Horror Filmmakers Make Great, Brutal Action Movies
Image
Ask any stunt person, and they'll tell you: the ability to sell taking a punch is just as important, and perhaps more so, than credibly throwing one. Ask any editor or sound designer, and they'll corroborate this and then some. If you've ever watched raw dailies from an action movie, you'll note how oddly weightless a lot of fight sequences become when they're robbed of their rhythm and the satisfying Thwam sound of their body blows. All this is to say that action in cinema is so incredibly dependent on selling the total effect of the violence, even more than show-stopping stunts and feats of strength and dexterity. Since it's all in the timing, it's no wonder that so many great action directors either come from or are adept at comedy -- from Buster Keaton to Jackie Chan.

However, there are just as many great action filmmakers who come from the world of horror,...

‘Elm Street’ Favorite Lisa Wilcox Joins Felissa Rose in Indie Slasher ‘The Last Sleepover’

Lisa Wilcox has joined the cast of The Last Sleepover as Bethany Drake, a popular matriarch and pillar of the community.

The actress is best known for going toe-to-toe with Freddy Krueger as Alice Johnson in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master and A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child.

“Whether someone loves the horror genre or not, everyone is familiar with the Nightmare franchise,” producer P.J. Starks (10/31) tells Bloody Disgusting. “As a fan of those films, having Lisa join the project is very cool. She is a solid talent, and the gravitas she brings due to her status in the horror community only elevates the excitement of making this movie.”

Nightmare On Elm Street: Patricia Arquette Has One Major Condition For Potential Franchise Return
Image
The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise could lure back Patricia Arquette, if producers are willing to meet one particular condition. The future Oscar-winner became a 1980s scream queen with her starring role as Kristen in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Having survived her battle with Freddy Krueger, thanks in part to her special dream-gymnastics skill, anointed Final Girl Arquette exited the franchise. Her recast character was eventually killed in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master.

Almost 40 years after taking her turn in the biggest of all ‘80s slasher franchises, Arquette says she would consider returning to Elm Street, but joked that she’ll only do it if producers take away Kristen’s gymnastic ability and give the character a new superpower (via ComicBook.com):

“Ya know, I just, I never really thought that in my dreams I’d be a gymnast so I don’t know.

Screambox Hidden Gems: 5 Horror Movies to Stream Including Japanese Giallo ‘Evil Dead Trap’
Image
The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.

Evil Dead Trap

Mix up your January Giallo viewing with Evil Dead Trap. Although its title invokes Evil Dead – and there’s a bit of Sam Raimi-esque kineticism in the camerawork – the 1988 Japanese film shares more in common with the lurid Italian thrillers: a mysterious killer, elaborate murder set pieces, gruesome violence, stylish cinematography, a dreamlike atmosphere, and an infectious synth score.

Upon receiving a graphic snuff film, a late-night TV host (Miyuki Ono) rallies a small production crew to investigate its origins at an abandoned military base. The story plays out in a manner that could be considered a slasher, but...

Patricia Arquette Has a Specific Requirement to Return to 'A Nightmare on Elm Street'
Image
The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has seen its fair share of final girls, but one that many fans would love to catch up with again is Patricia Arquette's Kristen Parker. At least the version she portrayed in 1987's A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, before actress Tuesday Knight took over the role in the fourth installment and encountered a grisly fate. Arquette's Kristen has become a fan favorite over the years, and while the actress rarely talks about doing the film, she did recently reveal what it would take for her to return to the iconic franchise.

During a chat with ComicBook, while Arquette was promoting the upcoming season of Apple TV+'s Severance, she was asked if she would ever return to the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. As it turns out, the actress has a very specific requirement that needs to be in...

Netflix Recently Revived This Underrated CIA Thriller
Image
Quick Links The Bricklayer Is a Fascinating Concept The Bricklayer Was in Production Limbo The Bricklayer Remains Controversial

The beginning of another year means that Netflix inevitably sees several movies and shows retired. As with every passing month, content bows out of the platform and is replaced by other productions. While Netflix Originals typically stay forever, other content depends on Netflix's ability to retain their rights indefinitely. That is an especially difficult prospect in the world of countless streaming platforms that are all competing to host the most entertaining content. Shows like Wednesday, Stranger Things, and The Umbrella Academy help to set Netflix apart, but it also relies on movies.

When Netflix is not hosting movies like Godzilla Minus One (2023), Jaws (1975), and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), it searches for relatively smaller productions. While the rest of Hollywood has depended on musicals and sequels to keep box offices active, Netflix has...

The Correct Order To Watch The Exorcist Movies
Image
A film historian might argue that the modern notion of the "blockbuster" wasn't born until 1975. It was that year that Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" was booked to open in hundreds of theaters simultaneously, a practice that was still uncommon at the time. In so doing, "Jaws" essentially created the "opening weekend," a notion that Hollywood is still enamored of to this day. Additionally, "Jaws" ramped up the marketing blitz, flooding advertising spaces with the "Jaws" logo. Giant commercial entertainments haven't been the same since. "Jaws" kicked the door down.

Of course, two years before, "The Exorcist" had already helped get that door unlocked. It wasn't opened as widely as "Jaws," but "The Exorcist" had staying power. It opened the day after Christmas in 1973, and ran in theaters continuously for 105 straight weeks. It has the biggest Christmas opening weekend of all time, only beaten by "Titanic" 34 years later. The world, it seemed,...

Fantastic Fest 2024: ‘What Happened to Dorothy Bell?’ Review
Image
Stars: Asya Meadows, Arlene Arnone Bibbs, Lisa Wilcox, Michael Hargrove | Written and Directed by Danny Villanueva Jr.

What Happened to Dorothy Bell?, the second feature from writer/director Danny Villanueva Jr. is, on its face, just another found footage/screenlife film about an investigation into the paranormal gone wrong. But, like the director’s first film, I Dream of a Psychopomp, there’s something deeper lurking under the surface, and that makes all the difference.

As a child, Ozzy Grey (Asya Meadows; Hyde Park) suffered a traumatic injury at the hands, and blade, of her grandmother Dorothy Bell. It was the final act in her transformation from beloved librarian to part of an urban legend about an evil presence haunting the library. There’s even a picture of what is allegedly her ghost in the building.

She repressed the memories of the event, and her family told her the wounds...

‘After Midnight’ – An Underseen ’80s Horror Anthology
Image
I first discovered After Midnight (1989) during my freshman year of college. There at I Luv Video was this VHS tape that gave me nostalgia for a movie I actually hadn’t seen yet. The woman on the cover, a character played by Jillian McWhirter, was quite literally trapped in time, and the tagline beneath her fiery fate read: “Anything Can Happen in the Dark.” As it turned out, my little case of memory distortion was rather fitting; this movie starts off with someone having a vague recollection, albeit of a terrible event.

Growing up I had passed by After Midnight many times at my local video shop, but it wasn’t until some years later that I gave it a watch. And after witnessing the nightmarish fate of those college students enrolled in The Psychology of Fear, I was hooked. Jim and Ken Wheat’s movie — their horror debut as...

Cliffhanger 2: Sequel to Sylvester Stallone's 1993 Classic Films This Fall
Image
Sylvester Stallone might be getting ready to thrill audiences with Season 2 of his hit Paramount+ crime series Tulsa King, but a new report suggests the 78-year-old star is also getting ready to deliver more death-defying stunts in Cliffhanger 2, a sequel to the 1993 action-thriller that Stallone starred in alongside the likes of John Lithgow and Michael Rooker. Produced on a budget of $70 million, Cliffhanger grossed a worldwide total of $255 million, and was met with generally favorable reviews upon its debut, and was nominated for three Academy Awards, including one for Best Visual Effects.

Per Screen Daily, Cliffhanger 2 is expected to start filming this fall after receiving a healthy infusion of cash from the Austrian film commission. Original director Renny Harlin will not be returning for the sequel, which will instead be helmed by Jean-Francois Richet, who was responsible for the 2005 remake of the John Carpenter classic Assault on Precinct...

Five Road Trip Horror Movies to Stream This Week
Image
Summer is winding to a close, though the blistering sun has not yet received the memo. That means the final days of vacationing or summer road trips are in order. Of course, horror has taught us the myriad of ways that the open road can induce abject terror and stress; flat tires are the least of your summer worries in horror.

Films like The Hitcher, Near Dark, and Splinter highlight how car troubles, creepy rest stops, and seedy motels don’t compare to humanity’s worst- human or otherwise- prowling the highways.

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to road trip horror movies. These five titles exploit our travel anxieties by pitting their protagonists against vampires, cannibals, psychopaths, and the devil himself over vast stretches of highway.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

'A Guy Can Dream...': Mike Flanagan Wants to Revive A Nightmare on Elm Street
Image
A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of the most popular horror franchises, but it hasn't had a new installment since 2010. If filmmaker Mike Flanagan gets his way, that could soon change.

Flanagan has garnered acclaim for his work on Netflix shows like The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher. He also helmed multiple Stephen King adaptations, including Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and the upcoming film The Life of Chuck. Flanagan will next take a stab at The Exorcist by making the next installment of that well-known franchise. Clearly, he's already done a lot within the genre, but he still hinted how reviving A Nightmare on Elm Street would be a dream job.

Original Alien 3 Director Explains His Version Would've Been Much Better
Image
Alien 3 is infamous for being considered the worst in the Alien franchise with a troubled production history. Renny Harlin worked on the film for a year as the original director, but his very different vision for the film was scrapped due to studio disagreements. The many script versions and director changes shaped Alien 3 into a film that even its own director dislikes.

Alien 3 is often considered to be the worst film of the Alien franchise, and also director David Fincher's weakest work (it almost made him quit Hollywood). On Rotten Tomatoes, it has both the lowest critics score and audience score of any film in the main franchise, including the divisive latter entries, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. It was very dark, lacked the action of the other films, and had twists on the mythology and narrative choices that most people disliked, though some have come around...

Renny Harlins 10 Best Movies, Ranked
Image
Harlin's diverse career spans comedy, horror, and action, with hits like Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea. Cutthroat Island, a box office flop, still has its moments with grand set pieces and a standout score by John Debney. Films like The Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea showcase Harlin's ability to blend action with heart and high-stakes thrills.

Known best for his action films, Finnish director Renny Harlin has some underappreciated films in his career that highlight his penchant as a director. Harlin's breakthrough in Hollywood came after directing the fourth installment in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. The slasher film cemented a few signature traits of Harlin's that would continue to appear in his future work, namely his ability to direct a feature that leaves audiences with a fun time, regardless of flaws found within the film's writing.

“It would’ve been a ginormous hit movie”: The Strangers: Chapter 1 Director’s Canceled Alien Movie Was Going to Do What Both Ridley Scott, David Fincher Couldn’t
Image
In the diverse field of sci-fi horror, the Alien franchise stands as a cornerstone. A film series that launched the genre’s popularity to its greatest heights. The space horror production was established by the renowned director Ridley Scott back in 1979, when the first movie came out. Since then, the murderous ETs have been handled by various auteurs, from James Cameron to David Fincher. Finnish director Renny Harlin once was painfully close to joining that list.

Sigourney Weaver in Alien |20th Century Studios

The Strangers: Chapter 1 director once had a chance to direct the third installment in the Alien filmology. But destiny had other plans for Harlin, who had to part ways with the project after desperately trying to convince 20th Century Studios of his vision for the film and failing.

Harlin’s plans would have steered the franchise back to its horror roots as opposed to more sci-fi as seen in later films.

How Freddy Krueger Became Horror's James Bond According to Nightmare on Elm Street 4 Director
Image
In Nightmare on Elm Street 4, director Renny Harlin transformed Freddy Krueger from a villain into a heroic leading man figure. The franchise shifted from dark origins to humor, with Freddy becoming an iconic pop culture character with smart quips. Despite reboots and over two decades since its last movie, Freddy Krueger remains a conversational point among horror genre fans.

Turning a child killer into a wise-cracking hero is not something that often happens in movies, but one exception to the rule is A Nightmare on Elm Streets dream demon, Freddy Krueger. From his origins as a dark, teenager-tormenting creature of nightmares, the character played by Robert Englund across eight movies, a TV series, and several cameo appearances evolved into a character that fans took to their hearts despite his horrifying history. According to one director of the franchise, Freddy became the James Bond of the horror genre.

Cliffhanger's Original Director Explains the One Thing the New Movie Needs to Do
Image
Renny Harlin hopes "for their own sake' that the team behind Cliffhanger 2 will shoot on real locations, which is crucial for authenticity, as digital effects can fall short of audience expectations. Sylvester Stallone will reprise the role of Gabe Walker from Harlin's Cliffhanger (1993) in the sequel. Ric Roman Waugh is directing the new Cliffhanger, focusing on the evolution of Sylvester Stallone's character alongside his daughter.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988) was a life-changing event for The Strangers: Chapter 1s director, Renny Harlin. Robert Shaye of New Line Cinema took a chance on young Harlin when the producer hired the virtually unknown Finnish filmmaker for Nightmare 4. Flash forward five years, and Harlin is helming Cliffhanger starring Sylvester Stallone. And during an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, Harlin was asked if he had any advice for the team behind the upcoming Cliffhanger sequel, which Ric Roman Waugh is attached to as director.

How Renny Harlin Turned Freddy Krueger Into the James Bond of Horror
Image
The Strangers: Chapter 1, the first installment of Renny Harlin's reboot trilogy of The Strangers, is in theaters now. However, this is not the first time he has taken over an existing series. One of his earliest directorial roles was A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. Taking control of the fourth installment in Wes Craven's iconic franchise was not an easy task, as Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) was at the height of his popularity. With Krueger being a household name, Harlin decided to focus on the central villain and turn him into a character the audience could root for whilst still maintaining the movie's horror elements. The shift from the dark boiler room to utilize more vibrant and bright set pieces makes this movie stand out and allows Robert Englund to embrace the humor of Krueger. It ensured the franchise didn't fatigue and The Dream Master was a huge hit.

Director Renny Harlin Breaks Down His Entire Career, From Freddy Krueger To The Strangers: Chapter 1 [Exclusive Interview]
Image
Director Renny Harlin has made some of your favorite movies. He's also made some total stinkers. And the beauty of speaking to the filmmaker -- who has carved out a unique niche across horror and action cinema for past four decades -- is that he's completely aware of it. Here is a director who has been around long enough, who has seen every facet of the filmmaking machine from all possible angles, that he's willing to be straight-up honest about it. Like anyone with a filmography this large (and this wild), he has stories to share.

When I sat down with Harlin over Zoom to chat about his new movie, the horror reboot "The Strangers: Chapter 1," I hoped we could talk about his entire filmography. But 30 jam-packed minutes later, my time was up, and the sheer number of noteworthy movies we didn't get to was astonishing. But we did...

Review: The Strangers – Chapter 1 is a Promising Start to a New Trilogy of Masked Mayhem
Image
“Is Tamara here?” In May of 2008, those three words hung in the air with foreboding menace (along with “because you were home”) as Bryan Bertino’s The Strangers played in theaters and shocked moviegoers like myself with its straightforward approach to home invasion horror and random violence. Now, 16 years later, the masked murderers now known as Pin-Up Girl, Dollface, and Scarecrow are back on the big screen in The Strangers – Chapter 1, the first film in a new trilogy and the third movie overall in the franchise (the most recent being 2018’s The Strangers: Prey at Night). More of a relaunched expansion of the franchise rather than a full-on remake of the original movie, The Strangers – Chapter 1 still retreads a lot of the first film’s frights, but it does so effectively while weaving in its own intriguing story threads, delivering a promising start to a new trilogy of terror...

The Strangers: Chapter 1 Review: Renny Harlin’s Horror Reboot Retreads Old Ground
Image
Renny Harlin’s The Strangers: Chapter 1 begins so rotely that it feels like a parody of every bad backwoods horror movie made in the last 50 years. An upwardly mobile young couple, Maya (Madelaine Petsch) and Ryan (Froy Gutierrez), are traveling cross-country to Portland for a job interview that Maya has lined up when they decide to make a pit stop for food. Rather than hit the nearest roadside McDonalds, they veer way off their route toward a diner in the tiny town of Venus, Oregon. And wouldn’t you know it, Maya and Ryan’s car breaks down, and since their cell service is spotty, they’re forced to spend the night in Venus. All the while, the town’s largely unwelcoming residents glare at them and mumble about “city folk.”

One diner employee, though, does offer Maya and Ryan some help, pointing them toward a nearby Airbnb cottage. This,...

‘The Strangers: Chapter 1’ Looked for Maximum Terror in a 10th of a Second
Image
In 1988, director Renny Harlin made a big splash in Hollywood when he directed “A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master,” which at that point was the highest-grossing film in the “Elm Street” series — and would remain so until “Freddy vs. Jason” in 2003. Two years later, Harlin had an even bigger hit with “Die Hard 2,” a movie that several critics at the time considered to be artistically superior to its predecessor. Now Harlin, whose credits also include “Cliffhanger,” “The Long Kiss Goodnight,” and “Deep Blue Sea,” returns to the world of sequels with “The Strangers: Chapter 1,” a sequel to Bryan Bertino’s ultra-creepy 2008 horror film about a brutal home invasion. As with his previous sequels, Harlin has both delivered the satisfactions of his source material and gone in his own new directions, in the process creating the most frightening thriller of 2024 so far.

The director’s overall...

TikTok Temporarily Shut Down Lionsgate Page Due to Creepy ‘The Strangers: Chapter 1’ Livestream
Image
“The Strangers” marketing campaign got a little too strange.

Around 11:30 p.m. Pt Tuesday night, TikTok shut down Lionsgate’s page after a promotional livestream for the studio’s upcoming horror-franchise prequel “The Strangers – Chapter 1” was found to have violated the social media platform’s terms of service.

The video was removed. In its place, a TikTok alert read: “We do not allow showing or promoting dangerous activities and challenges. This includes dares, games, tricks, inappropriate use of dangerous tools, eating substances that are harmful to one’s health, or similar activities that may lead to significant physical harm.”

A Lionsgate spokesperson did not respond to IndieWire’s request for comment on the stream being taken down.

The Lionsgate TikTok page has been restored. On it are five videos promoting the film, but no livestream.

“The Strangers – Chapter 1” livestream showed a masked person — the Scarecrow from the film — with...

The Strangers: Chapter 1 is the first of three films in the horror franchise scheduled to open in theaters over the next nine to 12 months. Director Renny Harlin's four-and-half-hour director's cut could end up in movie theaters for the die-hard fans to enjoy. Producer Courtney Solomon reveals The Strangers: Chapter 1 captures the primal nature of the original terrifying concept.

Fans of The Strangers (2008), starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, have plenty of frightening scares coming their way and very soon. The Strangers: Chapter 1 hits theaters this May, but Lionsgate plans to release a total of three Strangers movies in a span of 9 to 12 months, according to Variety. Plus, director Renny Harlin reveals that an all-inclusive four-and-a-half-hour directors cut is quite possibly going to end up in movie theaters for the die-hard fans to enjoy. The Strangers Trilogy: Renny Harlin is planning a 4.5 hour mega-cut
Image
Like many of you, I was scratching my head when I learned that director Renny Harlin would be making not one, not two, but three movies based on the horror cult classic The Strangers. While a pretty slick horror flick, the original spawned a modest follow-up that didn’t get a ton of buzz. When it came out, I figured it was a series that had run its course. It seems this is not so, with Lionsgate releasing a widely ambitious trilogy of horror films this year (it’s like the horror version of Kevin Costner’s Horizon).

Notably, it marks the return of director Renny Harlin to the horror genre. Now mostly known for his action films, such as the classics Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and many more – horror was where he made his original reputation. Prison, which gave Viggo Mortensen his first leading role,...

The final episode of 80s Horror Memories goes crazy with Wes Craven’s Shocker
Emma Stone and Jonah Hill in Maniac (2018)
JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.

Netflix Is Breathing New Life Into A Forgotten Action Movie
Image
Director Renny Harlin's career is fascinating. The Finnish filmmaker grew up loving Hollywood movies and later managed to insert himself into that very industry, making a slew of successful '80s and '90s movies from "The Long Kiss Goodnight" to "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master." More recently, however, his output has been a little more uneven.

Last year, Harlin's Pierce Brosnan-starring film "The Misfits" made a surprise comeback on Netflix. I say a "surprise" because "The Misfits" did not fare well at the box office when it was first released in 2021, and despite Harlin's efforts to rekindle the magic of his '90s actioners, simply functioned, according to critic Chris Bumbray, as "ad for Abu Dhabi tourism." Thankfully, the man who gave us such classics as "Die Hard 2" and "Cliffhanger" has not simply been reduced to churning out streaming movies that desperately...
