After a mixed debut season on Disney+, the second season of Russell T Davies' rebooted Doctor Who series has been terrific so far. With a fresh blend of whacky and whimsical tales alongside darker and grittier stories, the balance has been brilliant.
As fans prepare for the season 2 finale, "The Reality War," the official Doctor Who page has announced that the episode will air for everyone everywhere simultaniously. Typically, the BBC releases new episodes to audiences in the U.K. first, and then they air on Disney+ for everyone else shortly thereafter. Come May 31, the season 2 finale will air on BBC One's primetime evening slot like usual, and will also drop on streamer BBC iPlayer at the same time. In addition, it'll also be viewable in 450 movie theatres across the U.K. and Ireland. It will not air earlier at 8:00 a.m. on BBC iPlayer in the U.

David Tennant weighs in on rumors that he has been tapped to return to the Tardis following Ncuti Gatwa's potential Doctor Who exit. Tennant first joined the series as the Tenth Doctor in 2005 and led the series until 2010. After a major cameo in 2013, he made another surprising return in 2022's "The Power of the Doctor," portraying the fourteenth incarnation of the Doctor for the show's 60th anniversary celebrations. Tennant starred in three special episodes before departing the series once again.
As Doctor Who season 15 draws closer to its end and the show's future remains uncertain, Tennant was asked about the rumors that he had been selected to lead the show once more when speaking to The Guardian. The actor immediately debunked the idea, stating, "Ha, nobody’s told me that!" He then went on to defend his fellow Doctors, Gatwa and Jodie Whittaker, from questionable online debates, stating:

Episode 5 of Doctor Who Season 2 brought the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu) back to Earth. This time, they land in Lagos, Nigeria, as the Doctor discovers that his favorite barbershop got caught in a celestial revenge plot. But despite the episode's sci-fi elements, it also showcased Nigerian culture, which Ariyon Bakare praised following his Doctor Who debut.
Bakare played the mysterious barber in the latest episode, "The Story and the Engine." In a recent interview with Radio Times, he praised the amount of Nigerian culture that the latest episode presented and how this type of presentation was a first for the series.
"And these are the stories that are unusual. We don't see Doctor Who like this. I've not seen one that's done in such a way - with so much culture in it, and yet, the culture is not so far away, which we're always scared of.

The latest incarnation of Doctor Who has received a fair share of criticism lately since the show made its way to Disney+, Ncuti Gatwa landed the lead role, and Russell T. Davies became showrunner once more. But despite the complaints made by viewers, the cast and crew don't seem to mind it. Now, a new cast member has addressed these latest and ongoing criticisms and has a strong response to those who aren't enjoying what this newest take on this long-running sci-fi series has to offer.
Millie Gibson, who plays Ruby Sunday in Doctor Who, addressed these latest comments about the show in a recent interview with The Standard, especially the ones that described the series as "woke." According to her, people should "get over it" as it's about "two best friends traveling the universe."

This article contains spoilers for "Doctor Who" season 2, episode 5 -- "The Story & The Machine"
Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor might be a fairly upbeat regeneration compared to some of his predecessors, but if needs must, that only makes him more dangerous than the average Time Lord. In "The Story & The Machine," he handily proves that he can deflate a villain with nothing more than a heartfelt laugh and some inside information.
The unfortunate antagonist on the receiving end of this treatment is the Barber (Ariyon Bakare), who has just finished his big villain reveal monologue and unveiled himself as the God of Stories -- an eternal being who has been worshipped as the ancient Greek pantheon's Dionysus, Sága and Loki from Norse mythology, Akan folktale story lord Anansi, and many others in the same vein. The Doctor reacts to this information with a moment of stunned silence before breaking into...

Doctor Whohas always been a progressive show. Throughout the years since its reboot in 2005, it always made an effort to showcase people of color, LGBT+ people, and disabled people. But some people have taken exception to that.
A small, vocal minority objects to Doctor Who's inclusivity, calling it "woke." But the cast and crew of the show aren't taking that lying down. Millie Gibson, who plays Ruby Sunday, said as much in a recent interview with UK publication The Standard. "I'd just watch the show for what it is," she said firmly.
She called back to past eras of the show to highlight the fact that it was always diverse. "I remember watching an episode where David Tennant goes back, I think it's with Martha [Freema Agyeman], and they meet Shakespeare. And he's like, 'Oh yeah, Shakespeare's quite hot.' Doctor Who Season 15, Episode 5, "The Story & the Engine" will take the series to Lagos, Nigeria. Director Makalla McPherson recently opened up about the episode and credited series showrunner Russell T Davies as the inspiration for it.
Although she revealed no spoilers, McPherson told BBC Media Center how close-knit the crew is behind the scenes. "I absolutely loved it. I had an incredible time," she said. "I've been a huge fan of Russell T Davies for years, so to collaborate with him was a real privilege. He was supportive and generous from the start. I remember him saying, 'Every episode is like a film - make it your own. Put your stamp on it.' That freedom to be expressive while still honoring the legacy of Doctor Who was amazing."

After originally telling Collider's own Samantha Coley that he didn't know whether his spiteful Doctor Whovillainwould return in the currently-airing Season 2 of the timey-wimey series, it seems that Jonah Hauer-King's co-star, Millie Gibson, has now confirmed his inclusion in the upcoming two-part finale, setting in motion the ever-turning wheel of speculation from within the Whoniverse's fanbase. This comes following the pair's involvement in the most recent episode, "Lucky Day," which saw Ncuti Gatwa's titular Time Lord take a back seat and Gibson and Hauer-King, alongside Unit, take center stage.
In an episode of the BBC series The One Show, Gibson confirmed Hauer-King's involvement, saying, "I can say that Jonah comes back – the battle is not won." She continued, "He comes back and Russell [T. Davies] has written an amazing script, as always. I come back as well and I'm reunited with the Doctor and Belinda, played by Varada Sethu.

Doctor Who star Peter Purves played Steven Taylor, the companion of William Hartnell's First Doctor, for almost 50 episodes between 1965 and 1966, during the first run of the very, very long-running sci-fi series. As someone who's been there from the start, there aren't many people who know more about the show's evolution as the decades have passed.
The 'Whoniverse' has undergone some of the biggest changes in its esteemed history over the past few years. With the arrival of Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor, the show saw an investment from Disney, meaning new episodes air on Disney+ as well as on the BBC. With backing from the House of Mouse, the show now has a significantly larger budget, allowing for more extravogent stories than the BBC could never accommodate. These changes have yielded mixed results. The new seasons have been very hit and miss.

Doctor Who is going somewhere it's never been for its next episode, "The Story and the Engine." For the first time, the show is going to Laos, Nigeria. This is especially significant as the Doctor is now being played by a Black man, Ncuti Gatwa, and many episodes have dealt with the racism he faces in white societies.
Little is known about the plot of the episode. The BBC's synopsis reads only, "In Lagos, the mysterious Barber reigns supreme. The Doctor discovers a world where stories have power, but can he stop the Spider and its deadly web of revenge?" But now, the BBC has also teased the episode with an interview with the actor playing the Barber, as well as the episode's director Makalla McPherson and writer Inu Ellams.

Former Doctor Who star Peter Purves has complained that the modern version of the Disney+ show is "too sophisticated." Purves played companion Steven Taylor between 1965 and 1966.
Purves' character was a memorable part of the First Doctor era of Doctor Who, before much of the mythology behind The Doctor had been developed. For example, the concept of regeneration had not yet been introduced during Steven's travels with the First Doctor, nor had there been much exploration of the Time Lord race.
Peter Purves Shares His Complaints About Modern Doctor Who
According to BBC News, Purves shared his thoughts on the current version of Doctor Who while attending an unofficial exhibit for the show at Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery. He called modern Who "far too sophisticated for [his] simple brain."

If you talk to some, Doctor Who simply hasn't been the same since Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat left in 2017. Since then, dropping viewing figures — albeit with a universal shift in the way we consume television — and a decline in critical reception have seen the sci-fi series on shakier ground than ever before. Still, the return of Russell T. Davies to the helm and a big budget partnership with Disney looked to steady the ship, but certain metrics would lead you to believe that isn't true.
For The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Belinda (Varada Sethu), their currently airing Season 2 might be receiving top-tier critical ratings, but most would point to the show's Rotten Tomatoes audience rating to prove it is "beyond repair" and requires cancellation. However, when looking closer at this score and the reviews that accompanied it, it seems the "anti-woke" brigade had added the timey-wimey series to their review bombing target list,...

Doctor Who is no stranger to shocking twists, but the most recent episode "Lucky Day" had one no-one saw coming. Conrad Clark (Jonah Hauer-King) seemed like such a nice guy, but he was actually one of the most revolting villains the show has ever known.
It turns out that current Doctor Ncuti Gatwa was just as shocked about the Conrad twist as the audience was. His season one co-star Millie Gibson, who made her triumphant return to the show as Ruby Sunday in "Lucky Day," revealed all in an interview with Screen Rant. Like so many of the people watching, Gatwa thought that Conrad was just too nice to be a bad guy.
“Even when we did the read-through, I remember Ncuti being like, ‘I don't think I've had a chance to read this episode...’" Gibson remembered,. "We were just turning the pages until I heard Ncuti's reaction. I'll never forget it.

This article contains spoilers for "Doctor Who" season 2, episode 4 -- "Lucky Day."
Even during the cheesy and heartfelt Disney+ era of "Doctor Who," the show often highlights humanity's worst traits. It has introduced multiple toxic masculinity-themed villains like the power-hungry politician Roger ap Gwilliam (Aneurin Barnard) -- who's not-so-subtly coded as a domestic abuser among his other awful traits -- and Belinda Chandra's (Varada Sethu) possessive ex-boyfriend Alan Budd (Jonny Green). After "Doctor Who" season 2 brought back the show's most terrifying one-off monster, "Lucky Day" returns to the toxic masculinity well with a particularly malevolent and all-too-realistic example: Tiktok influencer Conrad Clark (played excellently by Jonah Hauer-King), an opportunistic content creator who'll sacrifice anyone on the altar of fame and fortune.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Doctor Who Season 2 Episode 4 “Lucky Day.”] Maybe Conrad (Jonah Hauer-King) was just too nice. It certainly seemed like Ruby (Millie Gibson) had not only found a boyfriend but one that she could be honest and talk about her adventures with the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) with in the latest episode of Doctor Who, only for it to turn out to all be a lie. Instead, Conrad was using Ruby and aiming to expose the “lies” of Unit regarding aliens, and Conrad still refused to believe the truth even when one, a Shreek, which had marked him as prey, took a bite out of his arm. Honestly? He deserved it for what he dared to say about Kate’s (Jemma Redgrave) father. But once locked up, he found himself brought briefly onto the Tardis for a confrontation with the Doctor. There, we found out why the Doctor was looking for Belinda (Varada Sethu...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Doctor Who Season 2 Episode 4 “Lucky Day.”] It’s hard to return to normal life after adventures with the Doctor. Doctor Who has shown that time and time again, and this time, it’s Ruby’s (Millie Gibson) turn, having left the Time Lord (Ncuti Gatwa) and the Tardis behind. But unfortunately, aliens and trouble are right around the corner. And doubly unfortunate? Her love interest, Conrad (Jonah Hauer-King) is nothing like he seems. He comes across as a sweet guy with whom she can talk about her adventures, only for him to be using her for his Think Tank, a group trying to expose the “lies” of Unit. These people don’t believe aliens exist, even though everyone has seen them. Conrad breaks into Unit and still refuses to accept the truth even when one, a Shreek that has marked him for prey, stalks him. The episode ends with him...

One of the great things about a time travel show is that Doctor Who can jump around in time and space. “Lucky Day” does this better than most, allowing multiple companions and versions of the Doctor to appear throughout the episode. While Ncuti Gatwa does not get the spotlight this time out, Millie Gibson returns to give an excellent performance as Ruby Sunday. More time with Ruby is great news, and “Lucky Day” continues to touch on themes of hatred and disinformation from the first few episodes.

We're almost halfway through the year, and 2025 still has a lot of interesting TV yet to give us. It's time for us to throw a trailer party.
First up, SyFy's sturdy sitcom Resident Alien is returning for a fourth season, with the hard-working Alan Tudyk back for another round as the extraterrestrial who killed a small town Colorado doctor and then took his face, and who then learned he kinda liked humans despite how awkward he was around them. I gotta give it up for any sitcom that lasts this long, especially one with so wild a premise.
The new season begins with Harry (Tudyk) having been replaced by another, more sinister alien, but based on the trailer above, it looks like that plotline gets resolved pretty quickly. There are other hijinks to get to. Resident Evil season 4 premieres on SyFy on June 6.

Britain goes wild for the Eurovision Song Contest every year, and it also goes wild for Doctor Who. So what better idea than to combine the two?
Ncuti Gatwa will be appearing on British TV not once but twice on Eurovision night.First, he'll be starring in the show's first ever Eurovision-themed episode, titled "The Interstellar Song Contest," and then he'll pop up as Britain's spokesman once the real song contest gets underway. "The Interstellar Song Contest" will be notable for featuring Graham Norton, who's long been the voice of Eurovision in the UK, and household-name TV presenter Rylan Clark. Ruby Sunday returns in the next episode of Doctor Who. Millie Gibson debuted in 2024 as the Doctor's latest companion but left him during the Season 14 finale as she got her happy ending. Showrunner Russell T. Davies states that her happy ending will continue in the upcoming episode.
In a recent interview, Davies teases what fans will expect once Ruby makes her return this weekend. According to him, "Lucky Day" will give viewers a chance to see what happens to a companion after leaving the Doctor and give a glimpse of "the Doctor/Ruby story" that fans have yet to see. Additionally, Ruby will be appearing in more episodes throughout the season as it was confirmed that she will appear during the finale, describing it as her "finest scene yet."

Millie Gibson's Ruby Sunday was the Doctor's companion in season one of Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor Who. She had a fascinating arc, but then it came to an end. However, she didn't leave the show entirely - she'll be back for a Season 2 episode, "Lucky Day."
Gibson recently chatted to the BBC about what it was like returning to the show. "It feels like returning home after a long day," she said. "It's so nice to be back playing Ruby Sunday in a whole new light. As Ruby grows up, so do I. In Season 2, you see more of a mature and stronger version of Ruby. The final season of Good Omens just got a major update from leading star David Tennant. Tennant plays the role of Crowley opposite Michael Sheen's Aziraphale in the first two seasons of Good Omens, which are both streaming on Prime Video. The show was renewed for Season 3, and it even began production last year before it was paused amid sexual assault allegations against creator Neil Gaiman. Not long after the show hit the pause button, it was announced that Good Omens would indeed wrap up with a third season, but it would only consist of one installment that will be one hour and 30 minutes long. Tennant recently sat down with The Independent, and he provided an update on the final season, admitting that it “would have been difficult to leave it on a cliffhanger”:
"We're doing Good Omens again. We're going back to do the final. We're doing a final.

“As Ruby Grows Up, so Do I”: Millie Gibson Is Just as Excited for Her ‘Doctor Who’ Return as You Are

Doctor Who Season 2 has kicked off with the return of Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and welcoming Varada Sethu as incoming companion Belinda Chandra. After dealing with another pantheon god and the return of the Midnight entity, the next episode of Doctor Who will shift to see the return of Season 1 companion Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson. When we last saw Ruby, she was parting ways with The Doctor.
When talking with the BBC ahead of her return to the Whoniverse in Season 2, Gibson says of her return:
"It feels like returning home after a long day. It's so nice to be back playing Ruby Sunday in a whole new light. As Ruby grows up, so do I. In Season 2, you see more of a mature and stronger version of Ruby. She’s recovering from her Season 1 adventures, and you see her learn to deal with that a bit.

Doctor Who Season 2 may have split audiences with its opening two episodes, "The Robot Revolution" and "Lux," but Ncuti Gatwa's second full season as the titular Time Lord officially hit its first home run with the most recent Episode 3, "The Well." A sequel to the classic first Russell T. Davies era bottle episode "Midnight," "The Well" chilled spines, held breath, and left viewers on the edge of their seats in the timey-wimey way only Doctor Who can.
With fans still catching their breath three days on, attention is now slowly turning to the upcoming fourth episode of the season, "Lucky Day," which excitingly sees the return of last year's Tardis companion, Millie Gibson's Ruby Sunday. Sometimes the best ideas come in the middle of the night, sometimes they're also the most bonkers ideas. That's how, apparently, the idea for an upcoming episode of Doctor Who Season 15 came about. The upcoming episode "The Interstellar Song Contest" was written by author Juno Dawson. Dawson talked with SFX Magazine in a recent issue about how the upcoming Doctor Who episode came about. She says that "Russell [T. Davies] is a workhorse who doesn't seem to need sleep, he emailed me at about 1:30 in the morning." She adds that:
"I didn't see it until my alarm went off at 7am," Dawson continued. "Like any modern person, the first [thing] I did was check my phone – like an addict. And I had this email saying, 'Die Hard meets Eurovision. What do you think?'"

This article contains spoilers for "Doctor Who" episodes "Midnight" and "The Well."
One of the best episodes of "Doctor Who" is season 4's "Midnight." A tightly written, atmospheric masterpiece produced on a shoestring budget, "Midnight" has stuck in viewers' minds for so long because it denies them closure. The Doctor has to face off against an alien he can't see, whose origins he doesn't know, and never discovers. The creature can only be observed when it possesses the bodies of the people around the Doctor, and it's defeated not by the Doctor's usual genius but by the surprise sacrifice of an unappreciated flight attendant.
Half of the appeal of this monster is how unknowable it is; it's sobering to learn that there are still things in this universe the Doctor can't handle. And the longer "Doctor Who" went without a sequel to "Midnight," the better the episode got. The show's willingness to embrace the mystery,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Doctor Who Season 2 Episode 3 “The Well.”] In 2008, during Russell T Davies‘ first run as showrunner, Doctor Who aired one of its best and scariest episodes. Now, in his second run heading the show, he has brought the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) back to that place. Yes, Doctor Who has taken the Time Lord back to the planet Midnight for a brilliant hour of television. Sure, it’s not quite at the level of “Midnight,” and returning to the planet and adding this new layer to the entity’s story was not necessary — what made that first episode so outstanding and chilling was how much was unknown about it, how it left off — but the good news is that while there are some beats that are repeated, it’s not just a rehash of what happened the last time the Doctor was there. The Doctor is still trying to get Belinda (Varada Sethu) home,...

After leaving Miami, Belinda and the Doctor need to go on another adventure to pinpoint their way home. However, few missions in the modern era have felt quite as dangerous as “The Well,” a fun episode that immediately draws comparisons to space horror films like Aliens and Event Horizon (through the lens of Doctor Who monster episodes). “The Well” also has some surprises waiting for long-time Who fans, with a brilliant turn.

“The Most Secretive Episode of the Season”: A ‘Slow Horses’ Star Teases ‘Doctor Who’s Latest Episode

Doctor Who Season 2 is now in full swing, with the opening two episodes, "The Robot Revolution" and "Lux," seeing Russell T. Davies' second full season in his new era in charge off to a great start. Sadly, just six episodes already remain in a reduced episode count of eight installments compared to the handful more fans had come to expect before this new Disney+ era. Much like 2024's Season 1, the opening two episodes of Season 2 have been full of color, bombast, and even an introduction to a new member of the Pantheon, only for the upcoming third, "The Well," much like last year's "Boom," to promise a more brooding, breathless story.

Doctor Who stars Ncuti Gatwa and Varada Sethu have addressed the show tackling themes of racism in its latest episode, "Lux." The second episode of season 2 featured The Doctor (Gatwa) and companion Belinda Chandra ( Sethu) traveling to 1950s Miami.
While "Lux" is a largely light-hearted episode pitting The Doctor and his companion against evil cartoon character Mr. Ring-a-Ding, there are moments that address the genuine history of the era that The Doctor and Gatwa found themselves in. In one scene, The Doctor revealed to Belinda that they were breaking the law simply by sitting in a segregated diner because both are people of color.

The last few seasons have seen Doctor Who expanding its internal lore once again. “Lux,” the latest episode, continues that trend. With Ncuti Gatwa delivering another excellent performance, and Alan Cumming guest-starring as a murderous cartoon character, “Lux” takes some massive swings that are sure to be met with some controversy. However, Russell T. Davies pulls off one of his more enjoyable teleplays, acknowledging the greater Who-Verse in the process.

This article contains spoilers for "Doctor Who" season 2, episode 2, "Lux."
"Doctor Who" is no stranger to animation. Apart from comparatively minor projects like the 2020 "Daleks!" animated show and larger undertakings like the BBC's long-running project to rescue some of the 100-plus lost "Doctor Who" episodes with the power of animation, assorted creatives have proposed animated "Doctor Who" shows of varying outlandishness for years. So, when the "Doctor Who" season 2 trailer teased the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) getting quite literally animated, ardent fans were no doubt keen to find out what the series has in store for them.
As it turns out, the animation episode, "Lux," is nothing less than a love letter for dedicated fans ... just not the way they might have anticipated. When the moonlight-animated living cartoon Mr. Ring-a-Ding (voiced by Alan Cumming) turns out to be Lux Imperator -- the god of light from the same pantheon as...

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has spoken out about the reason Ncuti Gatwa’s iteration of The Doctor goes through so many different looks. Davies made it clear that this choice was an intentional one to veer into the new era of the Whoniverse.
Since Ncuti Gatwa has taken over the role, the Scottish actor — and Sex Education alum — has avoided honing down a particular look in favor of a variety of flashy outfits. Davies noted that he wanted the Fifteenth Doctor to be more easily accessible and relatable for fans of dress-up and cosplay: "You can put on any costume and say, ‘I’m the Doctor today,’ because that’s what he’d do.” This news comes to us from Polygon.
Since the beginning of the show back in the 60s, each iteration of The Doctor has defined itself firstly through mannerisms and secondly through style. Each Doctor has a signature look,...

"Doctor Who" season 2, episode 2, titled "Lux," is a statement of intent. Apart from providing all the usual thrills and spills of a great episode of the venerable sci-fi series, it also ticks the boxes on other modern "Doctor Who" staples, such as tackling social issues and proving that the series continues to have its finger on the fandom's pulse.
Here, the Doctor and Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu) find themselves in 1950s Miami, where the mysterious appearance of a moonlight-animated cartoon character called Mister Ring-a-Ding (voiced by Alan Cumming) provides the episode's central mystery. Still, while they tackle a succession of serious issues, from the grim reality of the era's segregation to the extremely "Doctor Who" twist that Mister Ring-a-Ding is one of the ultra-powerful chaos gods that have been plaguing this incarnation...

Doctor Who hits strong form with Lux, a clever, witty outing for Ncuti Gatwa and Varada Sethu, from the pen of Russell T Davies. Review here.
This review contains spoilers. Our review of the previous episode is here.
I’m still trying to go into as many Doctor Who episodes as blind as I can at the moment, knowing the episode title at most, and trying to avoid next time trailers, or reading synopses. I did, however, know that Lux was to feature an animated character, and my head was mildly torn. Was this the money poured into the show since Disney popped along unlocking an idea that’s been bubbling around? Or did the money come first, and the idea second?
45 minutes later, I’m firmly voting for the former.
Lux comes from the pen of Russell T Davies, and I’ve heard him at Doctor Who launches talking...
