A Taste for Murder will star BAFTA-winning Downton Abbey actor Phyllis Logan alongside Warren Brown (The Responder) and Cristiana Dell’Anna (Gomorrah).

Each episode of the series will feature a murder mystery connected in some way to Italian cuisine. Brown is Dci Joe Mottram, a star detective with the Metropolitan police who, after a personal tragedy, retreats to Capri in Italy with his daughter to stay with his Italian in-laws for the summer. Logan is Elena Da Vinale, the witty matriarch of the family, front-of-house manager of the family restaurant, and mother to Dci Joe’s late wife. Starz has announced a January 17 premiere date for the six-part psychological drama, The Couple Next Door, following the season seven finale of Outlander, and released the key art and trailer for the dark new thriller.

The series, starring Sam Heughan, Eleanor Tomlinson, Jessica De Gouw and Alfred Enoch will be available to stream weekly on Fridays on the Starz app, all Starz streaming and on-demand platforms.

Channel 4 has renewed the psychological drama for a second season after the first became the UK network’s biggest scripted streaming launch on record, with episode one garnering more than a million views in its first seven days.

Channel 4 co-produced Season 1 of The Couple Next Door with Starz, but the Lionsgate brand was not mentioned in the press release for Season 2. Deadline has asked about Starz’s involvement.

Season 2 will feature a new cast, led by Sam Palladio (Nashville), Annabel Scholey (The Split), Aggy K Adams (The Witcher), and Sendhil Ramamurthy (One Piece). Hugh Dennis (Outnumbered) will return. Production is underway in Belgium. Season 1 starred Eleanor Tomlinson and Sam Heughan.

In a move to strengthen its position in the scripted television market, ITV Studios has acquired a majority stake in the production company Eagle Eye Drama. Eagle Eye Drama, founded in 2018, has quickly become a significant player in the industry through producing both original drama series and English adaptations of international hits. The acquisition also includes Eagle Eye’s Belgian production partner Happy Duck.

Some of Eagle Eye’s most successful shows distributed worldwide include “Professor T,” starring Ben Miller, as well as “Hotel Portofino” and “The Couple Next Door.” The company also produced critically acclaimed series for Channel 4 such as “Before We Die” and “Suspect.” Happy Duck, led by producer Dries Vos, has provided production services for Eagle Eye shows like “Professor T” and “The Couple Next Door.” This partnership will expand Eagle Eye’s capabilities and international reach.

The team behind international streamer Walter Presents, which has made the likes of Professor T for ITV and The Couple Next Door for Channel 4, will become part of the ITV Studios indie stable via an undisclosed majority stake deal.

As part of the deal, ITV Studios has also acquired a majority stake in the Belgium-based production services company Happy Duck, led by producer and director Dries Vos, which services Eagle Eye’s global slate.

Eagle Eye was previously part of the Channel 4 Growth Fund, with the network now exiting its 25% stake.

Eagle Eye is run by Walter Iuzzolino, Jo McGrath and Jason Thorp, the former being the well-known face of Walter Presents.

Beta Film’s thriller series “The Couple Next Door,” commissioned by the U.K.’s Channel 4 and Starz in North America, has taken the global market by storm.

Beta Film secured major deals in more than 55 territories across the world, including Rtl in Germany, Rai in Italy, Amazon in the Netherlands (first window) and Rtl in the Netherlands (second window), as well as Vtm in Belgium, and Yes in Israel. NBC Universal snapped up the six-hour drama for Brazil and Latin America, and Now TV for Hong Kong.

It majors in the best of foreign-language drama from around the world and Iuzzolino has duly snapped up The Shadow, Suplex and more Sløborn.

The Shadow follows a female journalist embarking on a new life in Vienna. Once there, she meets a beggar who tells her she is going to kill a man, setting a dark prophecy in motion. The six-parter was for German streamer ZDFneo and scooped the Audience Choice Award at the German Seriencamp festival in 2023. It will be on Walter Presents services in the U.S. and the UK.

Danish series Suplex will also be on the U.S. service. The show is a whodunnit following events after a competitor is murdered at a wrestling tournament.

Exclusive: Sherlock star Mark Gatiss is writing and starring in a British TV drama about a bookshop owner who helps police solve crimes.

Bookish will be a six-part series for UKTV crime drama network Alibi set in post-war London in 1946. Gatiss, the co-creator of BBC shows such as Sherlock and The League of Gentlemen and Netflix/BBC’s Dracula and actor in films including Operation Mincemeat and Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning, is the creator.

The series will follow Gabriel Book (Gatiss), an “erudite and unconventional” sleuth who cracks mysterious cases from his antiquated bookshop, using the thousands of books that line his shelves to provide him with the knowledge that he needs. Around him are a gathering of “loveable, damaged misfits who he informally protects, cajoles and mentors.”

Attracting audiences of over four million viewers on ITV and making a successful debut on France 3, the highly acclaimed drama has been sold to almost 120 territories worldwide.

Most recently, Telekom acquired rights in Germany, TV3 bought the series for Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova 1 for Moldova, and BBC and Tvp for Poland. Seasons 1 and 2 were sold to Nova in Greece and Cyprus.

The series is handled internationally by Beta Film, while PBS Distribution holds North American rights.

Duff stars in the series as Dr Susannah Newman. In the eight-part series, she is on a desperate quest to track down a self-confessed serial killer before he kills again that night. When a mysterious new client Jon (Cooper) admits under hypnosis that he is a murderer and intends on killing another young female that evening, Susannah knows he must be stopped at all costs.

Fronted by Anne-Marie Duff (“Bad Sisters”), “Suspect” tells the story of bereaved psychotherapist Dr Susannah Newman (Duff) as she tries to track down a serial killer before he strikes again. The Channel 4 show is an adaptation of Danish series Forhøret (“Face to Face”) created by Christoffer Boe.

Cooper joins as a mysterious new client, Jon Fallow, who claims under hypnosis to be a murderer. When he reveals his plan to kill again, Susannah knows he must be stopped. Before the police arrive Jon escapes and Susannah sets out on a deadly mission to save his next victim’s life.

“I’m so pleased to be returning to ‘Suspect’ to be able to dig deeper into the character of Dr Susannah Newman,” said Duff. “Expect lots of twists, turns and revelations alongside more questions to be answered.

Outlander may be off the air for an extended hiatus, but Sam Heughan has a delicious new role to sink his teeth into.

Exclusive: Fox Entertainment has struck a first-of-its-kind drama development deal with a trio of production companies, Walter Iuzzolino’s Eagle Eye, The Serial Killer’s Wife producer Clapperboard and Newen Studios label Aux Singuliers.

Fox Scripted Programming President Michael Thorn said the U.S. network and UK producers will “identify and implement entirely new production models,” while similar discussions are taking place with producers and studios in Europe, Australia and Canada.

With Clapperboard and Aux Singuliers, Fox is working on Dead Space [working title] from Young Wallander scribe Ben Harris.

Grounded in the reality of the current space race, the series attempts to redefine the traditional police procedural as it explores the complex moral, political and real legal machinations after a murder is committed aboard the International Space Station. It follows in the footsteps of the BBC’s Vigil, which took a similar approach to a murder mystery on a Navy submarine.

Outlander‘s Sam Heughan continues his relationship with Starz with the upcoming psychological drama The Couple Next Door. Described as a dark thriller, the six-part series just released the first four photos and confirmed Starz is targeting a 2024 premiere.

The series will air first on Channel 4 in the UK later this year before it arrives on Starz in the U.S. and Canada.

Spanish public broadcaster Rtve has struck a VOD deal with Walter Presents to bring noir thriller series “Sequía” (“The Drought”) to the U.S, U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and Canada.

The suspense series is co-produced by Spanish and Portuguese public broadcasters Rtve and Rtp, in collaboration with Atlantia Media and Coral Europa.

“The Drought” is set in a small submerged village on the Spanish-Portuguese border that re-emerges from a huge dam built in the 1990s after a severe drought. Two skeletons are also unearthed, revealing evidence of a bloody crime.

The action switches between the 1990s and the present day, against the backdrop of climate crisis and corporate skullduggery.

Actors Elena Rivera (“Inés del Alma Mía”), Rodolfo Sancho (“The Department of Time”), Marco D’Almeida (“Fatima”) and Miguel Ángel Muñoz (“Presunto culpable”) take the leading roles in the series.

“Outlander” might be gearing up for its end, but everybody’s favorite dashing Highland warrior still has a home at Starz. Sam Heughan, the star of the channel’s smash-hit time-travel series, will star in the thriller series “The Couple Next Door” at the premium cabler.

The show, a co-production between Starz and Britain’s Channel 4, is adapted from the Dutch series “New Neighbours,” and stars Heughan as Danny, an “alpha traffic cop” married to glamorous yoga instructor Becka (Jessica De Gouw of “Pennyworth”). When a new couple moves in next door — Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson of “The Outlaws”) and Pete (Alfred Enoch of “Harry Potter” and “How to Get Away With Murder”) in their high-class suburban neighborhood, the foursome become fast friends, but tensions soon form. Outlander star Sam Heughan leads the cast of Starz and Channel 4’s The Couple Next Door. The six-part series, described as a dark, psychological drama, also stars Eleanor Tomlinson (The Outlaws), Jessica De Gouw (Pennyworth), and Alfred Enoch (How to Get Away With Murder).

The Couple Next Door is “loosely” adapted from the Dutch series New Neighbours. David Allison (Bedlam) wrote the series and Dries Vos (Suspect) is directing.

Dr Sales has closed a deal with Walter Presents on the popular drama series “Carmen Curlers.” The company has picked up the show for the U.K. and Ireland, as well as taking North American rights for PBS Masterpiece.

Based on true events and kick-starting in the 1960s, the show chronicles the invention of the electric curler in Denmark. It also focuses on its female workers, making their own money for the first time in their lives, and societal changes, already lurking around the corner.

“I am absolutely delighted to welcome ‘Carmen Curlers’ in the Walter Presents collection of the very best international drama,” says executive director Walter Iuzzolino, calling it “a warm, incisive, emotionally absorbing piece with a gorgeous vintage aesthetic and a truly remarkable script.”

Israel has become the latest destination to embrace Love Island, with ITV Studios-backed Armoza Formats set to produce a local version for new Keshet streamer Free TV. Filming will take place in May for a summer air date, as Israel becomes the 26th territory to commission a version following the announcement of Malta and Albania last week. Avi Armoza’s ITV Studios-backed The Four creator Armoza Formats is producing the local version. Eagle Eye Drama, the U.K. scripted production indie headed by Walter Iuzzolino that is known for hit TV shows such the British remake of Belgium’s “Professor T” have announced the launch of Belgium-based production company Happy Duck Films.

Eagle Eye, which was set up by Iuzzolino and other founders of his foreign-language drama streaming service Walter Presents, have now teamed up with Belgian director Dries Vos who directed the “Professor T” remake and local line producer Hiskia Van Aert to set up this new venture.

Happy Duck Films will be based in the Belgian region of Flanders and will produce a wide range of English language titles “with creative talent from Flanders and beyond,” a statement said. No projects were announced.

Dries Vos will be joining the Happy Duck Films board of directors alongside its U.K. head of production Isobel Nicholson.

Channel 4 has invested in Rockerdale Studios, the first disabled-led company to join its burgeoning Indie Growth Fund. Rockerdale becomes the 17th producer to join the Fund, for which Channel 4 takes small minority stakes in producers and nurtures them, and the ninth over the past two years including David Olusoga’s Uplands TV and Walter Iuzzolino’s Eagle Eye. Rockerdale is the first to be run by a person with a disability, CEO Stu Richards. The company has produced Channel 4’s Mission: Accessible, Comedy Central’s Bobby and Harriet Get Married and upcoming All 4 show Rosie Jones’ Dine Hard. It is produced by Walter Iuzzolino’s UK outfit Eagle Eye with Belgium’s Creative Conspiracy. The main animation studio is Spicy Acorn in Ghent. Aardman will sell the series internationally. BBC, Vrt and France Télé are also on board.

Juliet Stevenson has joined the cast of crime drama “Professor T,” production partners Eagle Eye and Beta Film announced at MipTV in Cannes Sunday. The companies also said that they have greenlit a second season of period drama “Hotel Portofino.” Eagle Eye’s Walter Iuzzolino said his firm was working on two further shows with Beta, yet to be revealed.

Stevenson will play the therapist to the titular character, played by Ben Miller, in “Professor T,” which is shooting its second season in Cambridge and Belgium. Beta sold the show to more than 100 territories worldwide, most recently to Brazil (Globo TV), South Korea (BBC Studios), Switzerland (Ch Media TV) and Iceland (Syn), among others.

“Professor T” plays in numerous European countries, including Italy (Rai), France (France Television) and Spain (Movistar Plus+), and beyond in Latin America (HBO Max), Australia (BritBox) and Japan (Nhk).

Unveiled at a swanky Beta-hosted Mip TV event last night, the six-parter for PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel, BritBox UK, Foxtel Australia and others will return to film in Italy this year.

Beta said Hotel Portofino was one of BritBox’s top-rated streaming launch originals, the second most-watched VoD series on Foxtel Australia and second-highest debut for an international drama on Sky Italia’s Sky Serie channel.

Channel 4 has renewed the Lesley Sharp-fronted crime thriller “Before We Die” — an English adaptation of a Swedish series, produced by the team behind Walter Presents.

Sharp will return as detective Hannah Laing, who joins forces with maverick detective Billy Murdoch (Vincent Regan) in a desperate bid to protect her son Christian (Gibson). Season 2 won’t follow the same storyline as its Swedish counterpart, which aired in 2019, but will see Hannah pitched directly against Dubravka, played by Kazia Pelka, the matriarch at the head of the Mimica Croatian crime family.

The adaptation is produced by Eagle Eye Drama, which was formed in late 2019 by Walter Iuzzolino, Jo McGrath and Jason Thorp, the creative team behind the global drama company Walter Presents. Channel 4 has a minority stake in the outfit, which began as the international drama showcase for the broadcaster and has since grown into an international niche streamer.

Walter Presents has inked a two-year deal with Scandinavian streaming service C More to launch a curated selection of international scripted series across Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland.

Walter Presents, which specializes in premium foreign-language programming, will initially launch on C More with an 80-hour collection comprising eight first-run and exclusive series, including the Dutch psychological thriller “The Blood Pact”; Italian crime thrillers “Thou Shalt Not Kill” and “Ice Cold Murders: Rocco Schiavone” (pictured); and the French crime dramas “Vanished by the Lake” and “The Other Mother,” and the gripping Belgian political action thriller “Blackout.” The company’s goal is to expand its offer on C More to 500 hours over the next two years.

A key streaming service in the Nordics, C More has been investing in local drama productions and has a large portfolio of popular reality and TV shows, on top of exclusive broadcasting rights for major sports leagues.

Jan Mojto’s Munich-based sales and production powerhouse Beta Film, whose Mipcom slate includes “Sisi” and “La Fortuna,” has closed pre-sales across the Nordic Region and in the Netherlands’ for the PBS-ITV period drama series “Hotel Portofino.” The British show, created and written by Matt Baker, stars Natascha McElhone, whose credits include “Ronin,” “Californication” and “Designated Survivor.”

“Hotel Portofino” has been acquired by Dr for Denmark, Svt for Sweden, Nrk for Norway, Yle for Finland and Syn for Iceland, as well as Dutch national broadcaster Npo. Further negotiations with several international broadcasters are underway.

Now, Walter Presents has teamed up with Dmd, a global distributor of independent content whose Tvod and Est movie service is available to more than 36 million homes in Latin America, to offer non-English language content to those audiences via its streaming service CiND!E.
