Shrek not only kicked off a beloved animated franchise, but it also featured a memorable soundtrack packed with amazing songs. Critically acclaimed upon release, the Oscar Award-winning film cleverly re-imagined fairy tales and gave them a distinctly millennial twist. Blending elements of modern popular culture with classic fantasy stories, Shrek has a timeless feel while also being firmly rooted in its own era. The soundtrack was a large part of the film's success, thanks to a selection of tunes ranging from oldies to modern rock hits. Shrek may be a product of its time, but its soundtrack remains popular even decades later.
Initially released as Shrek: Music from the Original Motion Picture, the first soundtrack album featured almost all the hits from the movie and also included a notable cut from the original score. By 2003, the RIAA had certified the album two times platinum, and it was nominated for the Best Compilation Grammy.

The best thing about Shrek when it debuted 20 (yikes!) years ago was that it brought a fresh take on traditional fairy tales and got a generation of children to understand that there were more ways to tell these classic stories than the Disney way. The humor here was contemporary and original while still respecting the lessons these were designed to convey.
Now, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its release, Universal Home Entertainment has spruced up the original film for its 4k Ultra HD debut. It comes in a combo pack with the Blu-ray disc and Digital HD code.
It’s still funny, with Mike Meyers affecting a fine Scottish accent for the title character, paired with Eddie Murphy’s memorable Donkey along with Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona), John Lithgow (Lord Farquaad), and Vincent Cassel as Monsieur Hood. To protect the swamp home of the ogre and its other denizens, Shrek takes on the evil Lord,...

Apple TV+ has set a premiere date — and revealed the first teaser — for “Ted Lasso” Season 2. You’d better be a subscriber by Friday, July 23.
(The fictional) Ted Lasso himself tweeted out the below on Tuesday.
“I always hear the question: who let the dogs out (who who who who)? With respect to The Baha Men, I prefer When let the dogs out (when when when when)? ‘Cause guess what, Greyhounds? Our 2nd season starts 7/23! Can I get a Bah Amen!? That’s what I used to think they were called.”
Bah Amen, Ted, Bah Amen.
We all expected the Summer 2021 premiere, but Tuesday’s announcement at Apple’s “Spring Loaded” event was the first time July was mentioned. Season 1 of the hit Warner Bros. streaming comedy bowed on Aug. 14, 2020, and proved to be the perfectly positive counter-programming option to the coronavirus pandemic.

Well look who decided to join this conversation. Over the weekend, Wilmer Valderrama surprised his social media followers by going live on Instagram. But while chatting with his fans, the actor was joined by his ex-girlfriend Demi Lovato. "You look awesome, girl!" he shared during the brief conversation that circulated online. Demi replied, "Thank you! So do you!" During the conversation, the pair broke out into a quick rendition of Baha Men's hit song "Who Let the Dogs Out" before Wilmer expressed hopes of seeing Demi again soon. "I'm done with work on Wednesday so holla at your boy," the NCIS star shared. "See you, angel. Love you!" When...

“Who Let The Dogs Out,” the turn-of-the-millennium-era Grammy-winning Baha Men hit, has eclipsed kitsch to become a stadium anthem. And thanks to its peculiar origin story — the hook dates back to 1959 and the song’s ownership is a copyright maze — it’s now the subject of a documentary film, which held its world premiere at SXSW over the weekend.
New Yorker Ben Sisto serves as the documentary’s expert narrator. His decade-long obsession with the smash, which began when he noticed a curious, incomplete citation on the tune’s Wikipedia page, inspired a touring one-man show. Director Brent Hodge brings the story to life, tracing the lineage of the jam backwards, chronologically, with cleverly edited interviews with the multiple musicians, industry insiders and chant purveyors of the ubiquitous phrase. In the process, the film takes viewers from to the Bahamas, Trinidad, England, Florida, New York, Seattle, Michigan and finally to...

As suspected, there was no elimination on the “Dancing with the Stars: Juniors” semifinal, so the final four will hit the dance floor one last time in Sunday’s finale. The pairs will perform two numbers: a reprise of their favorite dance of the season — this time featuring their respective mentors — and a holiday-themed freestyle. So again, these young’uns don’t have the pressure of performing two completely individual routines.
The episode is only one-hour long, so there’s a lot to pack in — all of the eliminated couples will be back for a group number — before we even get to the winner. The winner will be determined by judges’ scores and the studio audience vote. And honestly, whoever wins would give Bobby Bones a run for for his money.
See Did Mackenzie Ziegler deserve the first perfect score on ‘Dancing with the Stars: Juniors’ for this paso doble?...

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s … a puppy in a bowl! To celebrate the countdown to the 2018 Puppy Bowl — airing on Sunday, Feb. 4 — Animal Planet decided to go the literal route, placing a puppy in a bowl and giving us 15 seconds of the cuteness.

A review of tonight's season finale of "The Leftovers" coming up just as soon as I spin the karaoke wheel... "Family is everything." -Meg "I don't understand what's happening." -John "Me neither." -Kevin "God, I hope this is not the last episode of this show." -My notes as the opening credits played I had another long conversation with Damon Lindelof about the finale, and as a bookend to the one we had before the season. Lindelof was understandably not interested in explaining many aspects of the finale, or the season, preferring to, like Iris DeMent, just let the mystery be. I suggested that certain developments in these final episodes — say, Kevin's ability to survive a near point-blank gunshot wound and not bleed out during that time he was lying on the floor of the animal quarantine; or, before that, his ability to survive not only drinking Virgil's poison (or whatever...

Viewers who tuned into MTV’s Video Music Awards on August 30th may have noticed several appearances from Todrick Hall, a YouTube superstar known for his elaborately-choreographed music videos. As companies like Virgin America can attest, Hall is in general a strong creative partner for brands, but his appearances at VMAs served a greater purpose. They acted as promotions for Todrick, his upcoming TV show, which will air its first episode on July 31st at 10 Pm Est on MTV.
Todrick, first announced last October, will follow Hall behind-the-scenes as he works with his team of dancers, singers, actors, and crew members to create memorable musical hits. The first video in the spotlight, as revealed in an MTV sneak peek, will be “Who Let The Freaks Out?,” which we can only assume will marry the 2000 Baha Men “Who Let The Dogs Out?” to the sort of urban embellishments for which Hall is known.

Lip Sync Battle returns from its hiatus, which means we're back with our post-match analysis, where we overanalyze the merits and demerits of the respective performances. Last night put Will Arnett and Alison Brie against each other in the battle between BoJack Horseman co-stars. If there is one lesson to be learned from this, it's that you live and die by your song choice. And Will Arnett chose to die. Battle 1: Will Arnett's "Who Let the Dogs Out?" vs. Alison Brie's "Shoop" Why Will Arnett did not choose "The Final Countdown" is entirely beyond the scope of reason. Instead he chose the Baha Men's "Who Let the Dogs Out?" — a monumentally obnoxious song that is fun for maybe ten seconds before you realize how unrelenting the chorus is, and that the people who are into it at this very moment are probably at a bachelor party...

A week after Lana Del Rey's infamous Saturday Night Live performance (a fairly disastrous showing that jumpstarted the second national wave of Ldr backlash), SNL attempted to address the controversy with a Weekend Update sketch. Kristen Wiig swanned out onstage dressed as Del Rey and offered the following fake apology: "The music stage on SNL is hallowed ground, and I failed to reach the high bars set by past guests like Bubba Sparxxx, The Baha Men, and Shaggy." The bit was funny (sorry, Baha Men), and not too harsh on Lana, who had surely been attacked enough that week. But the joke was built on a premise that hasn't been true for a while, or at least for the better half of this season, with acts like Del Rey, Sleigh Bells, Karmin, and Gotye taking the main stage. SNL has developed an unexpectedly trendy, Internet-aware musical taste. You could...

Lana Del Rey just can't seem to catch a break.
First the singer was viciously maligned for her lackluster performance on 'SNL.' Then a Letterman performance that was average at worst was passed over in a flurry of parodies and reports that the former gig was so poor that her management had canceled her tour.
The catch? Del Rey (real name Lizzy Grant, in case that hadn't been covered enough as well) didn't even have a tour scheduled.
From indie blogs to more mainstream news sources, the predominant Del Rey narrative is that of impending catastrophe. It's not a surprising one, given the hype that surrounded her first few songs and burgeoning career, but it does seem to be snowballing rapidly.
The false reports seem to have originated in a Page Six post which cited only anonymous sources who somewhat sneeringly said Del Rey would be sequestered in a...

While we were preoccupied with early Super Bowl festivities, "Saturday Night Live" took the opportunity of its first show following the Lana Del Rey debacle to address the controversy.

More than 200 artists have performed on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve since it debuted 40 years ago, and in tonight’s countdown of the Top 40 performances, Jennifer Lopez (and her bedazzled bodysuit) took the crown. Shrek. So thoroughly has the character permeated pop culture and zeitgeist – that no context or explanation is needed with the word. It has an almost pavlovian response on the listener. I say Shrek and images of a green ogre, pop culture references, sight gags, Eddie Murphy and a soon-to-be-eaten ginger bread man pop to mind. This can perhaps be attributed to the character’s ubiquitous nature – from the films to lunch boxes to Halloween costumes to ABC specials to commercial tie ins to action figures, Shrek quite simply is everywhere. DreamWorks will further propel its plan for Shrek domination by releasing all four films in a box set for the very first time December 7th, just in time for the Christmas season. Recently, though, it was announced that the Brothers Warner had a new version coming out, something called the “Extreme Edition”. Is it worth the double-dip? Should you jettison that version you’ve already got in your Blu-ray collection for this new edition of The Hangover? Find out after the jump, folks.
By now, none of us should be surprised by the blatant attempts at “double-dipping” that the studios thrust upon us. Sometimes– as in the “Ultimate Edition” of Avatar that James Cameron and Fox are releasing later this year (which has an assfull of special features, extra footage, a new opening, and more behind the scenes featurettes than you’d ever bother watching...

As first reported by Mother Jones, yesterday, the Minnesota state Gop released a video whose sole purpose is to show just how hawt Republican women are and how fug their Democrat counterparts are. Well, well, well. How classy. Now, given that the video (embedded below) is positively comical in its hackneyedness and looks like Michele Bachmann’s pet goldfish slapped the thing together with a budget of $0.50, it’s barely worth commenting on. But since commenting on pop cultural matters is what we do here at PopWatch, comment on it I shall.

Bill Murray made one of the all-time greatest cameos in Zombieland, where he played himself hanging out in his mansion during a zombie apocalypse. During his scene, one character asks Murray if he has any regrets, to which he responds: "Garfield, maybe." The joke was a huge relief to fans of Murray, who had to raise their eyebrows when they saw Murray play the voice of the infamous orange cat in the 2004 live action movie.
In a recent interview with GQ, Murray revealed that his involvement in the movie wasn't entirely because of money but stemmed from a case of mistaken identity.

Marmaduke
Directed by: Tom Dey
Cast: Owen Wilson, Emma Stone, Kiefer Sutherland, George Lopez, Lee Pace
Running Time: 1 hr 27 mins
Rating: PG
Release Date: June 4, 2010
Plot: The film follows the exploits of an over-sized great dane and his family as they all are forced to deal with their move from heartland Kansas to sunny So Cal.
Who’S It For? This is one for the kids. Sure, they may not even know who Marmaduke is, but if it’s a talking animal, it’s usually more for the children than their parents.
Expectations: Low doesn’t even begin to cover it. I never liked the comic very much and when it comes to talking animals, particularly dogs, if it isn’t Homeward Bound I’m usually not interested.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Owen Wilson as Marmaduke: The hero of our piece is obnoxious and smarmy. He’s supposed to be a lovable giant,...

Most people think of 2000 as the year that ushered in the 2 catastrophic George Bush presidential terms. But it was also the year that the Baha Men released their cover of "Who Let The Dogs Out?" It was a memorable part of the movie Rugrats in Paris, won a Grammy, became an anthem for both the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Seattle Mariners, was voted the #3 most annoying song of all time by Rolling Stone in 2007, went to #1 in Australia, and, most importantly, sold several million copies. Today, in honor of the attempt by some of the shadiest lobbyists on K Street starting a new Blue Dog think tank to push the Democratic House caucus even further right and to divorce it entirely from the interests of ordinary working families, Blue America is going to give...

It's rare to see a movie's tone conveyed so instantly as it is in Finn on the Fly. Not seconds after inserting the Finn into the DVD player, Baha Men's “Who Let the Dogs Out?” rang throughout my apartment like a Winterfest dance from 2001. I had to turn it down immediately. I don't need neighbors passing judgment on me, thinking I'm listening to the Baha Men's most overplayed and irritating song, or perhaps watching...well, any number of the movies that song is used in, save for The Hangover. And it was only funny in that movie because it's a goofy song. Anyway, I'd love to ask the filmmaker why he included that song. What is your defense, Mark Jean, for using that dreadfully overplayed and agonizing song in your movie? Is it because the word “dogs” is in the chorus? From what I've read, a lot of...

Melrose Place rarely disappoints because it knows what it is (especially now that Ashlee Simpson is gone): Intrigue below the surface, sexiness, scandal and over-the-top drama.
For the most part, "Mulholland" was a success, albeit a bit slow. Which wasn't so bad, necessarily, for an episode built almost exclusively around relationships. Here's Tvf's review:
Amanda is still poking around for her hidden treasure when she walks into David's apartment and starts checking out the art on his walls. She's interested in his "Sydney Original."
Unfortunately for her, even after some elaborate thievery of her own, it wasn't what she was after. Meanwhile, Riley's business trip to D.C. ends with her kissing her boss Ben.
Not awkward at all. They try to act casual about it. Until Ben decides he's bored with Amanda, then tells Riley he wants her instead. Wow, that was prompt and totally realistic!
Naturally, Amanda...

After executive producer Al Jean mentioned it last week, representatives of the band confirmed today that Coldplay would make a guest appearance on an episode during the upcoming season of "The Simpsons." They'll join an impressive list of bands who have gone yellow for the show, including U2, the Ramones, the Who, Smashing Pumpkins and Metallica. Coldplay don't necessarily have the same cool cred as the bands above, but are they the most mediocre act to ever play a note with yellow skin? Here are the musical guests that give them a run for their money.
Shawn Colvin: Remember Colvin? She had a brief bit of success during the Lillith Fair era with her hit "Sunny Came Home," and she's one of the few musicians to appear on "The Simpsons" as a character and not herself. She played a singer in a Christian rock band who wooed Ned Flanders...

Fans of great power pop can rejoice. A number of top purveyors of the genre are coming together to form a pop "super group" of sorts and Hitfix has exclusive details about recording plans. Tinted Windows is Hanson vocalist Taylor Hanson, Fountains of Wayne bassist Adam Schlesinger, former Smashing Pumpkins' guitarist James Iha and Cheap Trick drummer Bun E. Carlos. Billboard had the news of the group's formation but Hitfix is breaking that the foursome has signed with S-Curve Records, the label best known for releasing such acts as Joss Stone, Fountains of Wayne,Tom Jones and Baha Men. The album is...

Over the past few weeks I pitted our forums moderators David "Guru" Shnelwar and Darrin "DoubleD" Dortch against each other to predict who'll win the Grammy Awards for best record, song, Album and new artist of the year. Now let's look at each pundit's Grammy predictions on a solo basis. Here's Guru's spin on the Grammys:
Record Of The Year
Favorite -- "Viva La Vida" -- Coldplay Possible -- "Chasing Pavements" -- Adele Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" and Adele's "Chasing Pavements" are the only two songs nominated at the Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The contest will most likely be between those two songs.
Coldplay won this category in 2003 for their song "Clocks." I expect them to win here again.
Album Of The Year
Favorite -- Robert Plant and Alison Krauss -- "Raising Sand" Possible -- Coldplay -- "Viva La Vida" or "Death and...
