Clown In A Cornfield Joins Terrifier As The Latest Indie Clown Horror Box Office Hit
Image
It wasn't exactly a huge weekend overall at the box office, particularly by summer standards. Marvel's "Thunderbolts" won its second weekend with a $33 million haul, while Ryan Coogler's "Sinners" continued its record-breaking run by adding another $22 million. But while those movies were battling it out atop the charts, and as "A Minecraft Movie" topped $900 million globally, an indie horror movie found a surprising amount of success, albeit with a little less fanfare.

IFC's new slasher "Clown in a Cornfield" opened over the weekend with a $3.6 million domestic box office, good enough for number five on the charts. That's not a monster total on the surface, but it set a record for IFC, a company that has been around for more than two decades. It now ranks as the distributor's biggest opening weekend ever, overtaking last year's acclaimed "Late Night with the Devil" ($2.8 million), which went on to make $10 million domestically and $15 million globally.

IFC Entertainment Group Has Its Biggest Opening Weekend Ever With Clown In A Cornfield: "IFC Entertainment Group had its biggest opening weekend box office success ever with the release of Eli Craig’s Clown In A Cornfield, which grossed $3.6 million at the U.S. box office. The Rlje / Shudder film, which opened as the #1 new film in the US and 5th overall, lands the Group’s Rlje division its highest grosser to date and the Group’s widest theatrical opening, on 2,277 screens.

Clown In A Cornfield’s opening weekend broke records for IFC Entertainment Group, surpassing its 2024 success Late Night With The Devil’s box office opening of $2.8 million, and In A Violent Nature’s theatrical opening with 1,496 theaters last year.

“To say we are thrilled with the tremendous response to Eli Craig’s witty and playful adaptation of Adam Cesare’s chart-topping novel would be an understatement,” said...

‘Clown in a Cornfield’ Scores IFC’s Biggest Opening Weekend Ever!
Image
Clown in the Cornfield earned IFC Entertainment Group’s biggest opening weekend ever with a $3.6 million gross. It was also the company’s widest theatrical opening, on 2,277 screens.

The slasher, which opened at #5 at the box office, surpassed Late Night with the Devil‘s $2.8 million opening. That movie went on to make $10M, which Clown is projected to exceed.

Based on Adam Cesare‘s Bram Stoker Award-winning 2020 novel of the same name, Clown in a Cornfield is directed by Eli Craig (Tucker and Dale vs Evil) from a script he co-wrote with Carter Blanchard.

“To say we are thrilled with the tremendous response to Eli Craig’s witty and playful adaptation of Adam Cesare’s chart-topping novel would be an understatement. This success is the result of great storytelling, tireless work from the entire team at IFC Entertainment Group and is a huge win for our Rlje division,” said Head...

Clown In A Cornfield North America Box Office: Registers IFC’s Biggest Opening Ever By Scoring $3 Million+
Image
Clown In A Cornfield North America Box Office (Photo Credit – Instagram)

A creepy clown stalking a sleepy little town has turned into a big box office win. Clown in a Cornfield, the latest horror flick to hit the big screen, slashed its way to a record-breaking debut, pulling in $3.6 million at the North American box office (as per Box Office Mojo) over its first weekend. That’s now the highest opening ever for IFC (film distribution company), nudging aside last year’s surprise hit Late Night with the Devil, which had earned $2.8 million in its opening run.

Big Returns On A Tiny Budget

The film’s shoestring budget, which is less than $1 million, makes the box office haul even more impressive. Early signs point to it going even further, especially considering Late Night with the Devil ended up raking in $10 million. It seems momentum is definitely on Clown in a Cornfield’s side.

New Killer Clown Horror Movie Sets a Box Office Record With Debut in Theaters
Image
The new horror movie Clown in a Cornfield is now in theaters. In its opening weekend with its wide release, the film has also managed to set a new record.

Clown in a Cornfield has debuted with a haul of $3.6 million in its opening weekend. Per Deadline, this sets the new record as IFC's biggest opening weekend box office to date, surpassing last year's Late Night with the Devil, which earned $2.8 million. Late Night with the Devil went on to reach $10 million, and it's probable that Clown in a Cornfield will surpass that number.

This is great news for the film, which was made with a budget of less than $1 million. The movie's response has also been good, with Clown in a Cornfield earning a Certified Fresh score of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes. After its world premiere at SXSW, the film drew a lot of praise with its early reviews.

Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’ tops box office with $33 million as ‘A Minecraft Movie’ surpasses $900 million globally
Image
Update May 11, 2025: Thunderbolts, aka New Avengers, dominated the box office during the May 9-11 weekend, earning $33.1 million in its second outing. Ticket sales for Disney's Marvel movie dropped just 55 percent from its $74 million opening, buoyed by its A-minus CinemaScore and glowing reviews. This is a better hold than several previous Marvel films, including Captain America: Brave New World (down 68 percent), 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (down 70 percent), The Marvels (down 78 percent), and 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder (down 67 percent), signaling a positive shift for the franchise.

In second place, Sinners held strong with $21.1 million, with the Warner Bros. vampire flick's domestic tally soaring past $200 million and nearing $300 million worldwide. A Minecraft Movie followed in third with $8 million in its sixth weekend; the video game-based movie, also from Warner Bros., has now grossed $409 million in North America as it inches closer to $1 billion globally. Ben Affleck's thriller, The Accountant 2,...

Clown In A Cornfield – Review
Image
Last week, the big Summer cinema season kicked off with another trip to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with another Impossible Mission and a Disney remake debuting in just a few weeks. So, does that mean that horror fanatics (Aka “gore-hounds”) will have to wait for the cooler temps for their “fright fix”? Well, Rosario gave up some scares last week, and that late April “sleeper smash” Sinners is still dishing up some plasma with its blues soundtrack. So, why not a new chiller featuring the “go-to” thriller icons of the last couple of decades? No, we’re not talking about more vampires, werewolves, or zombies, but less supernatural creeps. Yes, it’s those brightly garbed, painted-on-smiles, former kids entertainers, that are now nightmare “fodder” after several “Jokers” and Pennywise of the It flicks. And how about seeing their oversized feet tromping about the usually tranquil heartland? Who wouldn’t dash...

‘Clown in a Cornfield’ Director Eli Craig Talks the Uphill Battle to Make Horror Comedies
Image
Clown in a Cornfield director Eli Craig insists it’s just as difficult to make a horror-comedy in 2025 as it was in 2010. That’s when he made his feature directorial debut with the cult hit Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, a horror-comedy that hilariously chronicles two hillbillies who are wrongfully treated like serial killers by a group of vacationing college kids. Earlier this year, The Monkey filmmaker Oz Perkins also lamented the ongoing struggle of making horror-comedies to The Hollywood Reporter, as he had to detach his latest film from a major studio and go the indie route to get it made within his ideal subgenre.

Craig has tried to knock some sense into executives around town, but it’s been a futile effort.

“I got Tucker & Dale made, and now it’s this cult classic that’s lived on. It’s also why I haven’t gotten to work a ton in this business.

Behind the Rows: 7 Classic Creepy Cornfields in Horror
Image
Cornfields are a horror film classic, and for good reason. Having personally grown up where cornfields stretched farther than my headlights could reach, I know how quickly these fields of plenty can transform into a disorienting maze. Whether it’s the leaves whispering in the wind, the claustrophobia of narrow paths flanked by towering stalks that trap heat and smother sound, or the way shifting shadows mess with the mind, cornfields have a way of tapping into the most primal of fears.

For filmmakers, cornfields offer perfect cover for unseen terrors, their dense foliage masking movements and muffling cries for help. As unlucky protagonists push through the stalks, every rasp becomes an ominous warning, every breath a race against the unseen. And if rural terror gets your blood pumping, then you’re in luck because the new film Clown in a Cornfield is barreling down the dirt road and into theaters this Friday.

Clown in a Cornfield Review: A fun slasher for teens
Image
Plot: After the death of her mother, Quinn (Katie Douglas) relocates to a small town called Kettle Springs with her father, who’s going to become the town’s new doctor. Once there, she becomes friends with a group of teens who like to film YouTube videos featuring a serial-killing clown called “Frendo.” However, they soon realize that Frendo is a whole lot more real than they think he is.

Review: Clown in a Cornfield is based on a well-received series of young adult novels by Adam Cesare. Having not read any of the books, I went into this adaptation relatively fresh, not knowing exactly what to expect. My interest was mainly piqued thanks to the fact that it’s directed by Tucker & Dale vs Evil’s Eli Craig, having been a big fan of that horror comedy gem.

Clown in a Cornfield has a similar mix of humour and horror,...

‘Clown in a Cornfield’ Review
Image
Frendo the Clown in ‘Clown In A Cornfield’ (Photo Courtesy of Rlje Films & Shudder)

You’ve heard of Snakes on a Plane. You’ve heard of Flowers in the Attic. You’ve even heard of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Now, get ready for Clown in a Cornfield.

And, surprisingly, it’s not just a mashup of It and Children of the Corn.

Clown in a Cornfield is about a teenage girl named Quinn (Katie Douglas from Pretty Hard Cases) who, along with her father (Hannibal’s Aaron Abrams), moves to a small town called Kettle Springs for a fresh start after her mother passes away. She meets a new group of friends, and despite being warned about them being “the wrong crowd,” she enjoys hanging out with them, doing teenage things like partying and making viral videos. Unfortunately, Kettle Springs has a dark secret built around the...

How ‘Clown in a Cornfield’ Strikes the Balance Between Horror, Humor and Gory Kills [Interview]
Image
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil director Eli Craig is back in the realm of slashers with Clown in a Cornfield, the adaptation of author Adam Cesare‘s young adult slasher novel. This time, the filmmaker is taking a much more serious approach that showcases suspense with the gory kills.

Clown in a Cornfield slashes into theaters on May 9, and stars Katie Douglas (Ginny & Georgia), Carson MacCormac (Shazam!), Aaron Abrams (Hannibal), Will Sasso (The Three Stooges), and Kevin Durand (Abigail).

In the film, Katie Douglas stars as Quinn, a young teen who’s recently moved to the quaint town of Kettle Springs with her father, only to discover something is seriously amiss with the place when the mascot of the defunct Baypen Corn Syrup Factory returns to kill. Again and again.

Craig, who also helmed the comedy-horror movie Little Evil and the pilot of the “Zombieland” TV series, put a lot of...

Clown In A Cornfield Review: Everybody Loves A Gore-Obsessed, Chainsaw Wielding Clown
Image
Adam Cesare’s smash-hit horror novel Clown in a Cornfield (2020) makes the leap from page to screen this week, bringing to life one of the most talked about villains in the recent horror fiction scene: Frendo The Clown. I haven’t read the book myself, but literally everyone around has been singing its praises for years now and good luck finding a “Best Young Adult Horror Books To Read This Summer” list that doesn’t include it somewhere. Directed by Eli Craig (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil), who also co-wrote the adaptation, Clown in a Cornfield (2025) is a genre-bending, grease paint splattered slasher that breaks rules, bashes brains and delivers one hell of a gory harvest for Horror fans.

Looking for a new start after the death of her mother, a teenage Quinn (Katie Douglas, Level 16) relocates to the small town of Kettle Springs with her father Dr. Glenn Maybrook (Aaron Abrams,...

‘Clown in a Cornfield’ Review – A Lean, Mean Teen Slasher
Image
The adaptation of author Adam Cesare’s Clown in a Cornfield recreates what makes the young adult novel and its subsequent sequels so special: it speaks to a younger generation about the frustrating generational divide while never sacrificing the horror. This slasher movie knows the best way to a budding horror fan’s heart is through gratuitous violence, cheer-worthy kills, and a batch of root-worthy characters that lament the frustrations that come from being disregarded by adults. Tucker and Dale vs. Evil director Eli Craig tackles the mostly faithful adaptation with aplomb, bringing the right balance of gore and comedy for a zippy, lean slasher.

Bypassing the novel’s cold open with something of a more traditional slasher opener, Clown in a Cornfield introduces protagonist Quinn Maybrook (Katie Douglas) and her dad, Dr. Glenn Maybrook (Aaron Abrams), as they arrive in their new hometown of Kettle Springs. It’s a...

‘Clown in a Cornfield’ Review: An Old-Fashioned Slasher That Doesn’t Take Itself Seriously
Image
In the three decades since the kids in Scream sat around explaining the rules of slasher movies, the genre has been deconstructed to the point where it can feel like there isn’t a whole lot left to subvert or satirize. And while some filmmakers are still finding fresh ways to reinvent it—most recently Jt Mollner’s Strange Darling and Chris Nash’s In a Violent Nature—there’s also a lot to be said for not getting too cute about this stuff. Eli Craig’s Clown in a Cornfield works precisely because it plays things straight, offering a nod and a wink to the genre’s rules while adhering to them in order to deliver a simple, satisfying slasher.

Based on Adam Cesare’s 2020 young-adult horror novel, the film begins with Quinn (Katie Douglas) and her father, Dr. Maybrook (Aaron Abrams), moving to Kettle Springs, Missouri. She quickly...

'Tucker & Dale vs. Evil' Sequel Gets Disappointing Update From Director Eli Craig
Image
Fans of outlandish horror comedies like Shaun of the Dead surely know of co-writer and director Eli Craig's 2010 gem, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. The somewhat-meta slasher buddy comedy follows the trials and tribulations of two rough-around-the-edges bumpkin pals (Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine) when a crew of ignorant college kids mistake them for hick murderers during a vacation in the woods. While the beloved flick hilariously parodies redneck slasher subgenre tropes, Craig's newest horror comedy, 2025's Clown in a Cornfield, infuses sociopolitical issues, including generational and class tensions, into its fairly traditional masked murderer plot.

Based on author Adam Cesare's Bram Stoker Award-winning 2020 novel of the same name, Clown in a Cornfield follows father-daughter duo Quinn Maybrook (Katie Douglas) and Dr. Maybrook (Aaron Abrams) as they move to a tiny Missouri town obsessed with traditional values: Kettle Springs. Hoping for a fresh start, Dr. Maybrook takes a...

Clown in a Cornfield (2025) Movie Review: A New-Age Slasher Whose Novelty Starts and Ends With Its Title
Clown in a Cornfield (2025)
A drunken night of teenage debauchery ends with a couple sneaking off from their wild rager to get freaky out in a remote farmland pasture (as you do). They stumble out, horny as all hell, as the boy lags behind, no longer hearing the enthused calling of his would-be conquest; out of nowhere, a deadly clown pops out with a pitchfork and paints the cornfield with his blood. Cue the title card: “Clown in a Cornfield.”

This is just about the level of bluntness you’re in for with Eli Craig’s latest secluded slasher, and while the director’s resume—namely, his work on “Tucker and Dale vs. Evil”—would incline you towards an expectation of comedy sprinkled among the kills, you may be surprised to find how much social commentary lies at the core of this Adam Cesare adaptation. That said, “Clown in a Cornfield” makes no pretenses...

The new creepy clown movieClown in a Cornfieldis already giving critics something to talk about beyond its goofy tone and the insane amounts of gore. However, early screenings have proven that the latest "killer clown" feature is a huge hit with critics. By the time of writing, it sits at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, a very good score for a slasher horror movie.

Adam Cesare teases a fourth book in his Clown in a Cornfield series
Image
While we eagerly anticipate the upcoming slasher film Clown in a Cornfield, author of the original books has recently shared that the book series will continue with a fourth novel.

Adam Cesare first published his Bram Stoker Award-winning YA horror novel Clown in a Cornfield in 2020, followed by a sequel in 2022 and a third book in 2024. According to a new interview the author did with Bloody Disgusting, a fourth novel is on the way called Clown in a Cornfield 4: Lights, Camera, Frendo!. Cesare didn't provide many other details about the book just yet, but he did tease that things are going to "get meta."

But the author also says he likes to name his books "in an almost counterintuitive way" to keep readers on edge. Readers don't necessarily know what to expect based on titles, so the "Lights, Camera, Frendo!" subtitle might not mean what you thinks.

"There’s...

How Horror Satire ‘Clown in a Cornfield’ Deploys the Biggest Twist Since ‘Cabin in the Woods’ to Tell a Story About Economic Hardship
Image
The horror film “Clown in a Cornfield” has a title that certainly delivers on its promise to ticket buyers: Yes, there is scary clown action in a cornfield. But as fans of Adam Cesare’s hit 2020 YA novel know, there’s plenty of twists below the surface we won’t spoil here — and many tell deeper truths about the heartland.

The initial plot concerns sullen teen Quinn (Katie Douglas) and her fraying bond with her depressed father (Aaron Abrams), who move to a sleepy Midwest town that is decaying after the local corn syrup factory shudders and is burned down. After falling in with a group of troublemaking teens, a clown that resembles Frendo, the factory’s mascot, begins terrorizing the town and targeting Quinn and her buddies. Yet near the midpoint of the movie, there’s a scene that plays against horror movie tropes so effectively that it acts...

Two years have gone by since we heard that an adaptation of the Adam Cesare novel Clown in a Cornfield (pick up a copy Here) was in the works, with Tucker & Dale Vs. Recently, we learned when we’re going to have the chance to see the movie, as it was announced that Rlje Films will be giving it a theatrical release in the United States on May 9th. That will be followed by a streaming release on the Shudder service. With one month to go until the film reaches the big screen, a clip has made its way online – and it’s surprisingly SPOILERy, because it shows one of the kill scenes. But if you don’t mind having a kill spoiled for you, check out the clip in the embed above.

Clown in a Cornfield SXSW Review — Can a Bloody Slasher Be This Funny?
Image
The slasher genre can sometimes find itself in a long-running rut. After all, there are many ways to tell these stories, but few feel genuinely innovative. Clown in a Cornfield comes from director Eli Craig, the director of horror comedies Little Evil and Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. While other directors might try to push the story in other directions, Craig maximizes everything about the screenplay. The humor lands to perfection, the meta moments are brilliant sendups on the genre, and the kills are gnarly. As a perfect crowd pleaser, Clown in a Cornfield is a masterful showcase from one of horror’s most comedic figures.
