Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ play Purpose won the Pulitzer Prize for drama Monday.

The play, which follows a powerful family in Black American politics recovering from scandal, is currently running on Broadway starring Latanya Richardson Jackson, Kara Young, Harry Lennix, Jon Michael Hill, Glenn Davis and Alana Arenas. Phylicia Rashad directs the production, which came to Broadway at a Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre in March 2024.

Oh, Mary! written by Cole Escola, which is also currently running on Broadway and stars Escola, was named as a finalist, as was The Ally, written by Itamar Moses, which premiered Off-Broadway in February 2024. Purpose and Oh, Mary! are both nominated for Tony Awards for best play.

This is the first Pulitzer win for Jacobs-Jenkins, who was previously named a finalist for his 2017 play Everybody. His previous plays have included Appropriate, which won the 2024 Tony Award for best revival of a play and saw Sarah Paulson win a Tony for her role.

Dead Outlaw, John Proctor is the Villain, Sunset Blvd, and The Hills of California earned seven nominations, followed by Floyd Collins, Just in Time, Purpose, and The Picture of Dorian Gray with six.

Nominations for the 78th Tony Awards have been revealed — and several of your favorite TV stars are up for Broadway’s top honors.

Veterans among Thursday’s nominees include Glee grads Darren Criss and Jonathan Groff, Smash alumni Megan Hilty and Jeremy Jordan, Succession‘s Sarah Snook and Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink. Other faces from the small screen include Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Cole Escola (Difficult People), Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five-0), Justina Machado (One Day at a Time) and Audra McDonald (The Good Fight), whose nod for the Gypsy revival was her 11th Tony nomination — the most for any Broadway performer.

Nominations for the 69th annual Drama Desk Awards were announced Wednesday by Tony- and Grammy-nominated actor Norm Lewis. Winners will be announced on June 1, at a ceremony taking place at NYU Skirball and hosted by Debra Messing and Tituss Burgess.

The Drama Desk Awards are unique in the landscape of New York theater, as they are the only place where Broadway, off-Broadway, and off-off Broadway compete within the same categories. A new musical and two original plays will lead the 2025 Tony Awards nominations, according to Gold Derby's official odds in 17 categories ahead of Thursday's announcement.

Death Becomes Her, a stage adaptation of the 1992 cult classic comedy film, will have the biggest tally of all shows with eight. It's expected haul follows its 12 nominations at the Outer Critics Circle last week, where it similarly bested all other shows. Two original musicals, Dead Outlaw and Maybe Happy Ending, will tie at six nominations apiece. Gypsy and Sunset Boulevard, which are our leading contenders for the Best Musical Revival prize, and British import Operation Mincemeat will also likely score well with nominators with five bids each.

Nominations for the 2025 Outer Critics Circle Awards were announced Friday by Oh, Mary! stars Cole Escola and Conrad Ricamora. Winners for these kudos, which honor Broadway and off-Broadway productions, will be announced on May 12.

The musical Death Becomes Her dominated the pack with 12 nominations, more than any other show, followed by Maybe Happy Ending with nine citations. Stranger Things: The First Shadow led in the play categories with seven bids, followed by The Hills of California with six.

While there are no Tony Awards nominators within the ranks of the Outer Critics Circle, the list of nominations nevertheless provides important insight into what performances are registering with the industry during awards season. A major difference is that the Outer Critics Circle employs gender-neutral categories but still capped at five slots. So, the actors named here have muscled their way past a large field of competitors in an impressive showing of awards strength.

Nominations for the 2025 Drama League Awards were announced Tuesday by current Broadway stars Sarah Hyland (The Great Gatsby) and Orville Peck (Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club). Winners will be announced May 19 at a ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.

The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and off-Broadway productions and stand out for their catch-all acting category, the Distinguished Performance Award. Purpose: Prior to opening, our users were only predicting a single nomination for this new American family drama for its Tony-winning featured actress Kara Young. Since the glowing critical response to playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' latest effort, it has surged with three additional expected bids for Best Play, featured actress Latanya Richardson Jackson, and director Phylicia Rashad. It certainly hasn’t hit its ceiling yet, either, as its lead actor Jon Michael Hill and featured actor Harry Lennix are both within striking distance in sixth place in their respective categories.

Whoopi Goldberg walked off the stage of “The View” on Thursday morning, but not out of frustration or anything. She was just looking for her friend Samuel L. Jackson after learning he was lurking in the audience.

Of course, the actor wasn’t just there for the fun of it. His wife Latanya Richardson Jackson was one of the ABC talk show’s guests for the day, discussing her new Broadway show “Purpose.” Getting into her background on theater, host Sara Haines noted that it spanned back to Jackson’s college days, which is when she met her husband of now 55 years.

“And he’s here with me now, because he won’t let me do anything by myself,” Richardson Jackson joked, rolling her eyes.

At that, Whoopi questioned if she was serious and, indeed, the camera panned to the audience to find Samuel L. Jackson sitting in a spot by himself near the doors.

Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, brought in a massive $2.6 million across its first seven performances on Broadway. 

The play broke multiple box office records at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, surpassing those set by plays across nine performances and by musicals by more than $1 million. It was helped by an eye-popping average ticket price of $361.90. The next highest average ticket price on Broadway last week was for The Outsiders at $155.

The totals made Othello the highest grossing show on Broadway last week, beating out Wicked, which has held the top spot for months, propelled by momentum from the film.

The play, directed by Kenny Leon and produced by Brian Moreland, is set to open March 23.

The Broadway revival of Gypsy, starring legendary performer Audra McDonald, is officially open!

Broadway besties Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff were among the celebs who led the star-studded red carpet at opening night on Thursday (December 19) at the Majestic Theatre in New York City.

Lea and Jonathan met while working together on the 2006 Broadway show Spring Awakening and have been best friends ever since. For those who don’t know, Lea worked with Audra when she was a child, playing the little girl in the original production of Ragtime back in 1998.

Audra is currently starring alongside Danny Burstein and Joy Woods in the new production of Gypsy, which is playing at the newly reopened Majestic Theatre. The theatre has been dark since The Phantom of the Opera closed back in April 2023.

Latanya Richardson Jackson will return to Broadway in Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’s new play Purpose.

Jackson, who has previously appeared on Broadway in the 2018 production of To Kill A Mockingbird and the 2014 revival of A Raisin in the Sun, will star alongside Kara Young, who won a Tony Award last season for her role in Purlie Victorious, Harry Lennix (The Blacklist), Jon Michael Hill (Pass Over), Glenn Davis (King James) and Alana Arenas (The Bluest Eye).

Phylicia Rashad directs the new play from Jacobs-Jenkins, who wrote last season’s Tony Award-winning revival Appropriate.

The play follows the Jasper family, which has created a powerful dynasty in Black American politics. However, when the family’s youngest son, Nazareth, comes home with an uninvited friend, the family must contend with faith, their own legacy and the cracks beneath the surface.

Latanya Richardson Jackson and Kara Young are among the complete cast announced today for the Broadway transfer of Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s production of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ play Purpose, directed by two-time Tony Award-winner Phylicia Rashad.

In addition to Richardson (A Raisin in the Sun) and Purlie Victorious Tony-winner Young, the cast will include Harry Lennix (TV’s The Blacklist), Jon Michael Hill (Broadway’s Pass Over), Glenn Davis (Off Broadway’s Downstate), and Alana Arenas (The Bluest Eye).

Arenas, Davis, Hill, and Lennix all appeared in the play’s acclaimed world premiere at Steppenwolf in Chicago in March 2024.

Purpose will play a limited 19-week run at the Helen Hayes Theater with previews beginning February 25, followed by an official opening on March 17. The engagement runs through July 6, 2025.

It’s been a big weekend for the Washington family.

While patriarch Denzel Washington chewed the scenery on multiplex screens in “Gladiator II,” the next generation of Washingtons stormed onto streaming with the film adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize winner “The Piano Lesson.” With the Netflix film, Denzel and Pauletta Washington’s kids — director Malcolm, actor John David and producer Katia — add to both their family mythos and Wilson’s legacy.

“We’re standing on the shoulders of the Wilsonians,” John David Washington told Variety at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Nov. 19, listing artists who’ve appeared in Wilson’s works on stage and screen, including his father, Viola Davis, Samuel L. Jackson, Latanya Richardson Jackson, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Charles Dutton.

Speaking at the 2024 MoMA Benefit honoring Jackson (per IndieWire), Walton Goggins' tribute was a funny anecdote about his son and Jackson meeting on the set of The Hateful Eight. Goggins' five-year-old was cosplaying as Jango Fett that day, and Jackson took the opportunity to reference an iconic Star Wars scene when they met. Jackson played the revered Mace Windu in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, and a highlight of that film was the Jedi Master's duel with the bounty hunter Jango Fett. That brief scene ended with Mace Windu chopping off the Mandalorian's head.

Samuel L. Jackson may be a real-life superhero, according to his three-time co-star Walton Goggins.

The star of the upcoming “White Lotus” season was among those honoring Jackson during the 2024 MoMA Film Benefit, presented by Chanel. Goggins recalled onstage just how much Jackson helped him during the rehearsals for Quentin Tarantino’s 2015 Western film “The Hateful Eight,” especially when it came to easing his nerves.

Good Morning America welcomed award-winning actor Samuel L. Jackson to the studio for a sit-down interview.

On GMA, he spoke about his upcoming film, The Piano Lesson, based on the August Wilson play.

Jackson initially starred in the Broadway show in 1987 and returned to star last year.

His acting career spans 50 years, as many moviegoers recognize him from a role somewhere on stage or screen.

Following his initial Broadway appearance in The Piano Lesson, he starred in many popular films, including Pulp Fiction, Snakes on a Plane, Shaft, Jackie Brown, A Time to Kill, and the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

While discussing some of his famous movie roles and lines on GMA, Robin called out the actor during the conversation.

Jackson being the one to originate the role of Boy Willie in the first production of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson” at the Yale Repertory Theatre in 1987, his wife Latanya Richardson Jackson completely banned him from talking to John David Washington about taking on the role when they began working together on the 2022 Broadway revival that she directed. “So the whole time we did the play, I had no Boy Willie conversations with him. I didn’t tell him what to do,” said the actor to IndieWire during a recent phone conversation. “He had to find certain things on his own because Boy Willie is a complicated character and you have to have a certain amount of comfortability in your understanding of him to be able to get those things out of your mouth that he’s saying.”

The story is centered on the Charles family, who have to decide what to do with a great family heirloom — a piano. Jackson plays the patriarch, Doaker Charle, who acts as a storyteller in the play and recounts detailed stories about the piano’s history. And Deadwyler plays his niece Berniece, who is a strong advocate for keeping the piano.

Jackson has a long history with this piece. He originated the role of Boy Willie at the Yale Repertory Theater in 1987 and reaped a Tony bid for his performance as Doaker in the acclaimed 2022 Broadway revival directed by his wife, Latanya Richardson Jackson. John David Washington, who played Boy Willie in that production, reprises his role here, with his brother Malcolm Washington handling helming.

Exclusive: Tony-nominated composer Branford Marsalis (Fences) is joining a revised music team for the upcoming fall Broadway production of A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical to create new musical arrangements and orchestrations, producers said today.

The new team, which also includes music supervisor Daryl Waters, dance music arranger Zane Mark and music director Darryl G. Ivey, replaces Annastasia Victory and Michael O. Mitchell who served those functions at the show’s pre-Broadway engagements last year in New Orleans and Chicago.

The trailer for Netflix’s adaptation of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson,” starring Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington, has been unveiled. Both Jackson and Washington are reprising their roles from the Broadway revival of the show, which wrapped up its run in Jan. 2023.

The film, directed by Malcolm Washington, follows the lives of the Charles family, led by Doaker Charles, (Jackson) in 1936 during the aftermath of the Great Depression. The family heirloom piano is decorated with designs carved by an enslaved ancestor. One brother plans to build a family fortune by selling the instrument and buying the land his family toiled, while his sister tries to keep it to preserve the family history.
