The inclusion of Viola Davis and Anthony Starr, respectively, as lead protagonist and antagonist is the major reason Amazon Prime’s G20 received major traction—so you can get my disappointment seeing how these incredible actors were wasted in this run-of-the-mill political action thriller. Sure, we get to see Viola Davis playing Potus. Danielle Sutton pulls off some good hand-to-hand combat, engages in gunfights, and delivers some cool one-liners, but much like all the characters present in the movie, her characterization is paper-thin—limited to being tormented by memories of on-field days and exasperated as a parent of an annoying teenager. Action scenes are decent, nothing to write home about; what could have been a much more compact, tight narrative gets bloated by ludicrous humor and unnecessarily stretched-out scenes. The lack of nuance in the narrative treatment is aggravated by the hilarious display of the American savior trope, making G20 an all-out average flick.
