I love talking about films that have something to say. Regardless of their quality, I always find the process of peeling back the layers of the narrative and getting to the inciting idea that led to the formation of a motion picture. Because, what’s the point of telling a story if it’s not relevant or educational in an engaging way? Even those movies that are usually deemed “plotless” make a point of not pushing the audience to bother themselves with the narrative and allowing them to go with the flow because they understand how overwhelming life is and that people just need a break sometimes. But the majority of the time, storytellers seek audience attention on an emotional level so that we can look past the genre norms, visual effects, cliches, and other cinematic accoutrements and truly understand where they are coming from.
