How ‘The Ballad of Wallis Island’ Threaded a Needle to Make Its Annoying Main Character ‘Bearable’
It’s a good thing Tim Key is so “charming,” as his comedy and writing partner Tom Basden puts it, because if his character in “The Ballad of Wallis Island” was any more annoying, he might threaten to derail the whole thing.
“He’s definitely the most dangerous in that respect that he can ruin the film,” Key said in the IndieWire Studio 2025 at Sundance, presented by DropBox. “Basically it’s getting to the point where you completely believe that this guy is in a living nightmare because he’s in this guy’s pocket, but not that spinning out into the audience of being, I can’t bear to watch this guy.”
