Evangelion Generative AI Nsfw Art Sellers Investigated by Police for Copyright Infringement
Two men suspected of infringing on the rights to the Evangelion franchise and profiting from making suggestive artwork have been referred for prosecution in Japan.
It's being widely reported in Japan that Kanagawa Prefectural Police have referred two men's cases to the prosecutor's office following an investigation into violations of the Copyright Act. Per TBS, the men possessed poster data on their devices from the popular Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time with the intention of copyright infringement, which they did by producing AI-generated posters of female characters. The characters' appearances were described as "sexually emphasized" by Tokyo Shimbun. They reportedly made around 10 million yen (~US$64k) between October 2023 and March 2024; they admitted to selling the content when questioned by police, stating, "It was to supplement our living expenses."
