I was not familiar with Mercedes Ron’s ‘Culpables’ trilogy before watching My Fault, and the film was not intriguing enough for me to take an interest in the books. It did not come as a surprise that the trilogy was first published on Wattpad before Penguin Random House picked it up. There will always be an audience for forbidden, and often cringe, romance, and the success of My Fault was somewhat expected. I personally thought the involvement of a minor with an adult could’ve been avoided, considering the popularity of the trilogy among its young audience. While navigating the thin line between what’s morally right and what’s not is precisely the point of forbidden love, defending it, or treating it as the ultimate act of rebellion, or even glorifying it, is possibly not the path one ought to take when dealing with such sensitive/debatable subject matter.
