What Year Does That 90s Show Take Place?

If the words “Zima,” “Pogs” and “Beanie Babies” mean nothing to you, then you might’ve been confused by some of the references in That ’90s Show. It’s also probably because you were born in a year that starts with 20-, like the entire new cast of the sitcom. But that doesn’t mean the series isn’t relatable for anyone watching.

“Even though I was never alive in the ’70s or the ’90s when [That ’70s Show] was being filmed,” says Callie Haverda, “I could relate to each of the characters.”

As Leia Forman, Haverda anchors the sitcom about a group of friends spending their summer in Point Place, Wisconsin in 1995. Haverda, 15, was born in 2007, 12 years after the series takes place; the oldest of That ’90s Show’s cast, 18-year-old Mace Coronel (who plays Jay), was still nine years away from being born when the show takes place...
