Vrmmo-themed anime have existed for quite some time. The Shangri-La Frontier’s anime adaptation is another addition to this subgenre, but right from the beginning, it’s clear that its focus is not on the “Mmo” part of the game. Unlike anime series like Log Horizon that show the daily lives of players, Shangri-La Frontier focuses on the protagonist Sunraku (who's a fan of ultra-difficult and broken games) purposely heading toward each seemingly impossible challenge. With monsters and obstacles that live up to the Vrmmo's praise among its players, Sunraku feels at home as he continues to challenge himself in this brave new world.
