Sex Education season 4 emphasizes transgender representation, adding new characters Abbi and Roman, portrayed by trans actors Anthony Lexa and Felix Mufti. Creator Laurie Nunn felt a responsibility to authentically portray the transgender characters and include their stories, given the current global climate surrounding transgender rights. Sex Education has always been inclusive, showcasing taboo topics like teenage masturbation and portraying a wide range of identities and experiences, including queer relationships, vaginismus, and asexuality.
