Few things are more embarrassing than opening TikTok in a quiet setting only for some inappropriate audio clip to start blaring out, but unbeknownst to many users, the app has a built-in setting to prevent that from happening. Autoplaying videos have been the norm across social media for some time now, and TikTok’s entire model relies on them. It’s a surefire way to grab viewers’ attention while they aimlessly scroll their feeds.

When videos automatically play with sound, though, it can be pretty jarring. By default, TikTok videos play with sound from the moment a user opens the app. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Users can change their playback settings so that TikTok is muted when the app is opened. To do it, TikTok users just need to go to their profile and tap the menu button at the top right, then head to ‘Settings and privacy.
