With Alice, Darling now streaming on Hulu, a new swath of fans are taking in its shocking ending and revelatory lake dive. 

The 2022 thriller from director Alanna Francis stars Pitch Perfect's Anna Kendrick as Alice, a young woman who takes a much-needed girls' trip to escape a psychologically abusive relationship with her boyfriend, Simon. 

The film was lauded upon release, earning a stellar 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. It joins Kendrick's long resume of acclaimed movie hits, including her 2024 directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, which takes a few pages from Alice, Darling's book but has its own shocking ending.

It’s part of what makes her one of Hollywood’s most relatable celebrities off-camera, even as the Oscar-, Tony-, and Emmy-nominated star continues to wow on-camera.

So, a couple of weeks ago we saw the “Mr. Nice-Guy” of the movies, Tom Hanks channel his inner grump as A Man Called Otto. And now a new release has another actor “pushing” out of their cinema “comfort zone”, though maybe not as jarring as Mr. H. For the last few years she’s made her “name” in bouncy musicals (even a music franchise) and frothy, but usually witty, “rom-coms”. From this film’s title, many moviegoers may think this effort falls in the latter category. And they would be mistaken. Granted it concerns modern relationships and a romance that, to put it lightly, has taken a turn. As you might guess, today’s tech “amps up” the problems. Perhaps that’s why there’s more than a touch of irony in its title, along with general menace, with what should be a phrase of endearment, Alice, Darling.

Tightly wound, the film comes back again and again to hair. The management thereof, the removal, the curling, even eyeliner is an act to offset lashes. Hair in showers, hair in lakes, hair in spirals, hair in hands. Camouflage and signal, sword and shield, of the body and off, not quite alive and not yet dead. A boundary. One of many.

A début feature for Mary Nighy, some shorts, some TV, some roles in front of the camera to her credit. A credible and compelling work, buoyed by strong performances from its cast but given further strength by several choices that ground this. Written by Alanna Francis, working with Mark Van De Ven as story editor as she did for 2019's similarly relationship focused The Rest Of Us, the film is a story sufficiently solid that at times I felt it might have been a stage play.

Kendrick impresses as a woman being deprived of emotional oxygen by a toxic boyfriend, though Mary Nighy’s film gets distracted by a subplot

Anna Kendrick gives a vehement, self-aware lead performance in this Gaslight-style suspense drama about a young woman trapped in a coercive, abusive relationship from screenwriter Alanna Francis and debut feature director Mary Nighy. Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick has been in news since September, when her film “Alice, Darling” made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In a recent interview with People, Kendrick disclosed the reason as why she can connect with the film so much, which revolves around the story of a woman compelled to deal with a problematic relationship.

Kendrick told the magazine that her “personal experience with emotional abuse” was the prime reason behind her doing the film which she also executive produced.

Anna Kendrick might be best known for her comedic and musical roles, but with her latest feature, Alice, Darling, the Oscar-nominated performer reminds viewers she has some seriously impressive dramatic chops. Anna Kendrick is opening up more about how her personal experience in an abusive relationship affected her lead role in the new movie Alice, Darling, now playing in theaters in New York and Los Angeles ahead of a wider theatrical release on Jan. 20.

Anna Kendrick has opened up about how making her forthcoming film Alice, Darling helped her recover from her own difficult relationship.

The process of filming the thriller, which deals with psychological and emotional abuse, was a “cathartic” experience for the actor.

Lionsgate is partnering with Babe Nation Films, Elevation Pictures and Castelletto Films on the upcoming psychological thriller “Alice, Darling,” which stars Anna Kendrick, the studio announced Monday.
