Bengaluru, Aug 27 (Ians) A stylish fifty by Devdutt Padikkal, a late blitzkrieg by captain Manish Pandey and then some accurate bowling by the bowlers led by Manoj Bhandage helped the Gulbarga Mystics lift the inaugural edition of the Maharaja Trophy.
The Mystics saw off the challenge of Bengaluru Blasters by 11 runs at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday night.
Batting first, the Gulbarga Mystics got off to a flying start with the in-form Jeswath Acharya and Rohan Patil firing on all cylinders in the powerplay. Both batters were dealing in boundaries in the initial phase — scoring at more than 10 runs an over, as they put on a stand of 60 runs before Patil was the first to depart for 38.
Acharya was joined by the stylish Padikkal and they continued to keep the momentum going. The partnership though wasn’t a big one as Acharya walked back for 39 in the 7th over.

New Delhi, June 13 (Ians) With less than a week to go before the start of the World Test Championship (Wtc) final, the Indian batting unit looks better and more experienced than its New Zealand counterpart in the Wtc.
While India have as many as five batsmen among top 15 top scorers in the tournament, New Zealand have none.
New Zealand's batting mainstay, skipper Kane Williamson, is the highest placed, at 16th in the list with 817 runs scored at 58.35. Part of the reason why he is so low in the run-getters' list is because he has played just nine matches as against the Indians above him in the list who have played many more games.
Cheteshwar Pujara (818 runs in 12 matches at an average of 29.21), Mayank Agarwal (857 in 12 by at 42.85), Virat Kohli (877 in 14 at 43.85), Rohit Sharma (1030 in 11 at 64.37) and Ajinkya Rahane (1095 in 17 at 43.8) are all above Williamson. However, barring Sharma, no Indian has...

New Delhi, June 11 (Ians) Former India selector Msk Prasad has credited the Indian team's recent success and bench strength to their strategy of shortlisting 60 to 80 players from domestic competitions and grooming them for the highest form of cricket.
"Through India A cricket, we shortlisted some 60 to 80 players that we wanted to follow in domestic cricket," Prasad, a former India wicketkeeper-batsman was quoted as saying in The Cricket Monthly.
"We posted ourselves for all those matches where these 60 players were playing. Otherwise, you have 15-16 first-class matches going on every day. You can't keep running here and there."

New Delhi, June 8 (Ians) India skipper Virat Kohli will be vulnerable against New Zealand in the World Test Championship final if conditions in Southampton aid swing and seam bowling, said former New Zealand captain and coach Glenn Turner.
"I don't wish to speculate on whether Kohli's reflexes have deteriorated. But if the pitch and overall conditions favour seam and swing, he is also likely to struggle along with others as was demonstrated in New Zealand," the former opener Turner, who was the first batsman to hit a 150-plus score in ODIs, was quoted as saying by The Telegraph newspaper.
"Once again, conditions are going to be pivotal. I think it is true to say that the home conditions, where batsmen are brought up, play a significant part in the technique and skills of a player… English conditions are generally closer to those in New Zealand.

Chennai, Feb 4 (Ians) Fresh from their success as opening pair in Australia recently, batsmen Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, who shared two half-century stands in four Test innings in India's remarkable series win, will get a long rope in India's Test series against England, captain Virat Kohli said on the eve of the first Test on Thursday.
While Sharma had cemented him place in the opening slot back in the home Tests in 2019, Gill made his debut in Australia on the recent tour and impressed with his strokeplay, and notching scores of 50, 31, 7 and 91. Chennai, Feb 4 (Ians) New dad Virat Kohli will return to lead India against England in the first Test of the four-match series beginning Friday at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium after his deputy Ajinkya Rahane proved his leadership credentials by captaining the side to a memorable 2-1 series win in Australia last month.

Although Rahane said Kohli is the original captain and his own job is to take a backseat, the series will witness scrutiny on Kohli's captaincy skills as his deputy has emerged as a viable option.

New Delhi, Jan 23 (Ians) Members of the Indian cricket team will assemble in Chennai on January 27 ahead of the first Test against England that begins at the M. Chidambaram Stadium on February 5.
It has been learnt that the players would reach Chennai in batches -- from different cities -- and enter the bio-bubble from January 27. They will undergo a week-long quarantine during which the Indian team management will devise its strategy for the series.
The England team will also enter the bio-bubble from January 27 when they arrive after completing the ongoing second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle that ends on January 26.
However, players coming to India from England, like all-rounder Ben Stokes, pace bowler Jofra Archer and opener Rory Burns, will arrive a bit earlier as they will land straight from England. The trio is not part of the England team that is currently touring Sri Lanka for the Tests.

Brisbane, Jan 19 (Ians) "I think a drawn series will be worse than the loss a couple of years ago," former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting said on Monday. However, the Indian team on Tuesday went one step further as they came out with one of the best Day Five batting performances to beat Australia by three wickets in the fourth and final Test at The Gabba, thereby winning the four-match Border-Gavaskar series 2-1.
Chasing a mammoth target of 328 on the final day of the match, that too at a venue where Australia had not tasted defeat in last 32 years, India rode on brilliant half centuries of Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and Cheteshwar Pujara to register one of India's most historic win in Test cricket.
When India scored the winning runs, Pant remained unbeaten on 89, alongside Navdeep Saini at 0.

Brisbane, Jan 19 (Ians) Batting mainstay Cheteshwar Pujara on Tuesday continued to bat like his usual self, despite coping numerous blows on his hands and helmet, as he helped India reach 183/3 at Tea on the last day of the fourth and final Test against Australia at The Gabba.
At the end of the second session in which 100 runs were scored in 25 overs, the match was nicely placed as India need 145 more to register what would be an incredible win while the hosts need seven wickets to seal the four-match series.
Earlier, resuming the session at 83/1, talented opener Shubman Gill continued to play positively and alongside Pujara, collected runs at a brisk rate. The 21-year-old, who looked reasonably comfortable against the Australian pace attack which resorted to short-pitched stuff, looked all set for what would have been a well-deserved century before he got caught in slips by Steve Smith against Nathan Lyon...

Brisbane, Jan 17 (Ians) Australia made a few bizarre review calls on the fourth day of the fourth Test against India which has led to captain Tim Paine coping with some criticism on social media.
Paine had decided to review decisions for catches off Mayank Agarwal and later Navdeep Saini, both of which turned out to have missed the bat by a fair distance.
In the 49th over, Agarwal missed a flick shot off Pat Cummins and the ball hit his thigh pads before flying into Paine's gloves. Both the bowler and wicketkeeper appealed and after the umpire shook his head, Paine went for the Drs.
The next incident came in the 103rd over which was also bowled by Cummins.
Saini came in after Cummins had got the wicket of Shardul Thakur and evaded a bouncer. This time it was Matthew Wade at forward short-leg and Cummins who went up in appeal.

Brisbane, Jan 15 (Ians) Right-arm India pacer Navdeep Saini was on Friday taken for scans after he complained of pain in his groin on the opening day of the fourth and final Test against Australia at The Gabba, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has informed.
The 28-year-old, playing only his second Test, was seen in a lot of discomfort, holding onto his thighs, after his follow-through as he bowled the fifth delivery of the 36th over during Australia's first innings in the post-lunch session. Incidentally, it was the same delivery on which skipper Ajinkya Rahane dropped Marnus Labuschagne at gully.
Team India physio Nitin Patel came on to the field and Saini left the ground after doing some stretches. Rohit Sharma bowled the final delivery to complete the over.

Brisbane, Jan 15 (Ians) Australia on Friday morning reached 65/2 at Lunch, losing both their openers cheaply on the opening day of the fourth and final Test against India at The Gabba.
At the end of the first session, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith remained unbeaten at the crease on their respective scores of 19 and 30.
Electing to bat, the hosts didn't get off to a good start as both David Warner and Marcus Harris went back to the dressing room with just 17 runs on the scoreboard.

Brisbane, Jan 14 (Ians) India have not named their playing XI for the fourth Test against Australia and will be announcing it on Friday before the match starts at The Gabba as they are monitoring the injuries of the players.
This was informed by batting coach Vikram Rathour on Thursday.
Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is suffering from an abdominal strain and is a doubtful starter for the series decider. If he doesn't play, the visitors can bring in Shardul Thakur to join Mohammed Siraj and Navdeep Saini in the pace department.
With Kl Rahul returning home due to a wrist injury and Mayank Agarwal hit on the hand at the nets, India also face a dilemma as they look to bring in someone to replace Hanuma Vihari, who injured his hamstring during the drawn third Test and is unlikely to play as the No. 6 batsman.

Brisbane, Jan 13 (Ians) India's weakness in the lower middle-order batting as well as bowling could present an opportunity to all-rounder Washington Sundar in the fourth and final Test that begins at the Gabba here on Friday.
The right arm off-break bowler and left hand batsman, who has played 21 T20 Internationals but just one Odi and no Test, stayed back as a net bowler after the white ball series in which he played all the three T20 matches.
The early hints of his inclusion came on Wednesday when he did everything at the nets at the Gabba. He bowled and batted for a reasonable amount of time.

Melbourne, Jan 2 (Ians) Australia and India openers have not shown the intent, urgency and bravery to put opposition bowlers under pressure, David Warner said on Saturday while adding that he will bat aggressively if he gets to play the third Test in Sydney beginning January 7.
"If you allow them to dictate terms and if you don't apply any pressure, then it becomes difficult to score. In the last two Tests, from both teams there has been lack of urgency at the top in trying to take it to the bowlers a little and having that intent," said Warner while speaking to the media on Saturday.
Australia in particular, without Warner opening, have been very slow to get off the blocks in the two Tests. The first innings of the first Test saw both Matthew Wade and Joe Burns add 16 runs in 14 overs while in the second Test, both Burns and...

Melbourne, Dec 29 (Ians) Australia's batting struggles at home against India in Tests, which started in the 2018/19 series that they lost 2-1, doesn't seem to have been solved thus far in the ongoing four-match series despite the inclusion of experienced Steve Smith and the in-form Marnus Labuschagne.

New Delhi, Dec 29 (Ians) India's biggest takeaway from the second Test apart from the series-equalling win was the ability of debutants Shubman Gill (45 and 32 not out) and Mohammed Siraj (2/40 and 3/37) to step in and perform with self-assurance. Although they didn't get the big numbers, the two did enough damage to Australia and helped India win.

Melbourne, Dec 27 (Ians) Mitchell Starc said on Sunday that he didn't really think about reaching 250 Test wickets and is more concerned about the task Australia have at hand in their second match against India here. Starc became the ninth Australian to reach the landmark when he dismissed Rishabh Pant on the second day of the Boxing Day Test.
"I didn't really think about it (reaching 250 wickets). I don't think I am one for personal milestones," Starc told reporters after the day's play. The 30-year-old left-arm pacer took two wickets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday, with opener Mayank Agarwal being his other victim.

Adelaide, Dec 19 (Ians) Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting on Saturday batted for the inclusion of Rohit Sharma as early as possible into the Indian squad for the ongoing Test series against Australia, saying that he is a far better player than either of India's current opening batsmen, Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal.
The two openers aggregated just 30 between them across the two innings of the first Test which India lost by eight wickets. Of those 30, Shaw got just four which was in the second innings.
"He (Rohit) will definitely play. He is a better Test player than Mayank Agarwal and Prithvi Shaw. If he is fit then he will straightaway slot at the top of the order," said Ponting while speaking on Channel 7.
Former India opener and captain Sunil Gavaskar, when asked about Rohit, told Channel 7, "Yes, yes, yes, he is definitely going to play in this Test series.

Adelaide, Dec 19 (Ians) India captain Virat Kohli said that the defensive approach of his team mates while batting was to blame for their collapse on Day 3 of the first Test against Australia as opposed to rustiness of playing Test cricket after over nine months or Australia's bowling.
India were on Saturday bowled out for 36 -- their lowest ever score in Test cricket -- and eventually lost the match by eight wickets at the Adelaide Oval.
"They bowled similar lengths in the first innings. We were handling it better then and had a plan around it. We knew how we wanted to go about things. A bit of a lead can be very tricky. As a batting unit you can go into a headspace where you feel like you are just 50-60 runs ahead, and you don't want to lose early wickets. That thinking allows the opposition to come into the game.
India were on Saturday bowled out for 36 -- their lowest ever score in Test cricket -- and eventually lost the match by eight wickets at the Adelaide Oval.

New Delhi, Dec 19 (Ians) India's lowest Test innings total of 36 on Saturday at the Adelaide Oval against Australia is in many ways different from their previous lowest of 42 that Ajit Wadekar's team managed in 1974 at Lord's against England.
Though there was one major similarity -- India did not lose all 10 wickets as the No. 11 on both occasions was injured.
To start with, the Lord's innings came after the Indian team was already under the cosh following on in the face of a 327-run deficit. England had hammered 629 in the first innings and India could reply with 302 in their first. India already had their backs to the wall entering the second innings back then, unlike this time when they went into the disastrous second innings with a 53-run lead in first innings. In fact, nine runs were already added to the lead for the loss of just one wicket on Friday night,...
