OpinionOnce upon a time, toxic love was extensively romanticised on screen. But today, with such narratives under scrutiny, there have been attempts to address the intricacies of toxic relationships.During an interaction for an interview, scriptwriter Sanjay (one half of the Sanjay-Bobby duo) spoke about how liberating it is to no longer see heroes slapping heroines in Malayalam cinema. There was a time when one ‘tight slap’ was mandatory in most films (especially family dramas) to ‘tame’ the heroine so that she would go back to complete the patriarchal happy family picture. But with the political correctness lens firmly fastened on films by social media, writers and filmmakers are thinking twice before sitting complacently on their conditioned belief systems. Once upon a time, love was extensively romanticised and lopsided on screen. There were many instances of toxic love being normalised, as well as celebrated, without question. But today, with such narratives under scrutiny,...

FilmsFor someone who started as an assistant director in Malayalam cinema, with the hope that it will eventually help him find his way through, Shine has come a long way.Neelima MenonScreen grab of press meet by Shine Tom ChackoA few days ago, as Shine Tom Chacko faced the media for the promotion of his latest movie, flanked by its cast and crew, he faced questions on the recent state film awards. Ever since the awards were announced, some social media conversations revolved around the actor’s brilliant performance in Kurup and how he was denied a mention. What followed was an open show of defiance from the actor who questioned the integrity of the award committee and wondered loudly and animatedly, how it is humanly possible for anyone to watch 150 films in five days. He also cast aspersions on the logic of roping in a non-Malayalee to head the jury panel.

MollywoodThese unnerving scenes are sure to give you sleepless nights.Neelima MenonScreenshot: Disney+ HotstarIn this short list are some of the most psycho-esque moments in Malayalam cinema, captured and served to perfection. Dare we say winter is coming. It’s time to let the chill run down your spine. Some spoilers ahead! Mayaanadhi: In the climactic sequence of this Aashiq Abu directorial, written by Syam Pushkaran and Dileesh Nair, Mathan (Tovino Thomas) kneels near the riverside and the cops circle him. MollywoodSeveral rape-revenge dramas have come out, but these three recent films go beyond the usual narratives. Sowmya RajendranWomen who commit a sexual transgression on screen have usually been punished. They might be raped, killed or at the very least shamed and reformed — and the character would be considered to have “asked for it”. In the last decade, however, particularly after the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case, the depiction of sexual violence on screen has undergone a vast change. A woman’s transgression is no longer considered a justification for sexual violence. From rape being used as a plot point for the hero to outrage about and the rape victim taking her own life unable to live with the “shame”, narratives now are placing women at the centre and reimagining victims as survivors. This has led to several rape-revenge dramas, including the latest Netflix film Bulbbul, produced by Anushka Sharma. These...

MollywoodIn these new films, the challenges and conflicts between men are pushed to an extent that the absurdity becomes apparent to the audience.Sowmya RajendranIn recent times, Malayalam cinema has shown an interest in studying the male ego rather than celebrating it at face value as was the practice. Though the industry's ageing superstars continue to make bombastic films where "mass" is valued over the script, the younger generation is moving towards a brand of cinema that is exploring new shades to masculinity. Usually, a challenge between the hero and the villain is seen as an opportunity for the former to succeed and display his superiority over the latter. But in these new films, the challenges and conflicts are pushed to an extent that the absurdity becomes apparent to the audience. What's more, the actors who play the hero in most films, seem to be enjoying doing roles where the...

MollywoodThis year was also one where several impressive films were made by debut directors. CrisAfter many updates about an upcoming film, beginning from the announcement of the title to the first look poster, the teaser and the trailer and finally the release itself, everything is over in the blink of an eye. A movie you have been waiting for, or read lots and lots about for months, has come and gone. It may not have even been that good. There’ve been a few like that this year, coming with a lot of noise, blowing its proverbial trumpet a little too loudly and then fading away just as soon. This is not about those movies, but the better ones – the ones that came quietly and surprised you, or the ones that simply met your expectations, or the ones that just made you feel good about the world. When you look at the list though,...

Sifc is the apex body for Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam film industries. In the letter to Sifc, the producers association has demanded that Shane not be offered any projects in the four south Indian film industries until he compensated the producers of films Veyil and Qurbaani, for the losses they have incurred after the projects had to be abandoned. Shane had recently confirmed his Tamil debut with actor Vikram and was to leave to Russia for the first phase of the film's shoot in December.

The decision was announced by M Renjith, President of the Kerala Film Producers' Association (Kfpa), in a press meet. These films are Veyil, Ullasam and Qurbaani. Renjith told reporters that Shane did not turn up for shoots on time and behaved badly on the sets. When Tnm contacted Shane, however, he appeared to be completely taken aback by the decision. "I was not the one who complained. I didn't go to any association and complain. 10-15 of them in the association discussed it among themselves and took the decision and they informed the press. Nobody asked me for my side," he said. The spat between producers and Shane has been in the news...

Opinion While it is appreciable that the film has chosen to address a serious issue, there is a problem in the way the victim's violence is glorified. CrisMalayalam film Ishq, from the time it began to be discussed in the media, was spoken of as a film that was not a typical love story. The title was even followed by the words ‘not a love story’. In the interviews before the release, the director Anuraj Manohar and its lead actor Shane Nigam spoke of a social issue with which the film deals. When the movie came out, it was hailed for the way it handled this social issue. MollywoodThe movie which begins promisingly enough, becomes a drag after a point and the issue of moral policing that it deals with is not handled well.CrisIt is almost like a disclaimer, the way the tagline rolls after the title of the movie: Ishq, ‘not a love story’. Do not worry, audience, we will not bore you with another boy-girl romance. So you know even as the movie begins with the all-too-real phone romance between Sachi (Shane Nigam) and Vasudha (Ann Sheetal), it is not going to last. You wait for something to go wrong. And when it does, the expectations you’d have built up till then – because there was a nice flow to the scenes so far – fall, one by one. Ishq may have tried to touch upon the real social problem of moral policing in the state, but the way it chooses to handle the problem is really wrong.
