Exclusive: Composer Ólafur Arnalds, who won a Bafta for his work on Broadchurch and had compositions featured on Nomadland and The Hunger Games, has boarded documentary Ari’s Theme as executive producer ahead of its world premiere at Hot Docs.
Nathan Drillot and Jeff Lee Petry’s work follows the real-life figure of Ari Kinarthy, a 34 year old music composer with the rare genetic condition Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2, which causes his muscles to deteriorate and will shorten his life.
By sixteen, he had lost the ability to move his arms but through a music therapy program he was introduced to composing, finding his life’s purpose.
The documentary follows Kinarthy 18 years later as he embarks on the project to create the soundtrack of the most impactful memories of his young life in a bid to leave legacy.
“We can’t ever know how long we’ll be remembered or what impact we really made.

Sunday brought a close to the 10th Life Is Beautiful music festival in Las Vegas, and with it the end of the summer festival season. Life Is Beautiful, which has taken place in the city every year for the past decade (save for a pandemic-related 2020 cancellation), brought tens of thousands of concertgoers downtown, many in the psychedelic and post-Y2K fashion that’s been so common at festivals for the past several years, though this time with a fair amount of Barbie influence, too.

Bebe Rexha and Tyler Hubbard’s surprise performance in Las Vegas was… wait for it… meant to be.
Although country music was absent from this year’s Life Is Beautiful lineup, the genre, which is having a huge moment on the charts, made an appearance at the festival thanks to Rexha. During her set on the Jbl Stage, the pop star welcomed Hubbard, formerly of Florida Georgia Line, for a performance of their hit duet “Meant to Be.”

With Saturday marking the first official day of Autumn, Las Vegas’ Life is Beautiful is the last hurrah of the summer festival season.
Life Is Beautiful is unique in that it doesn’t take place in a large field or a city park, but smack dab in the middle of Vegas’ eclectic downtown, turning parking lots into disco rooms, hotels into art exhibits, and swaths of streets into stage areas. There’s neon everywhere, a giant fire-spewing metal Praying Mantis by the festival’s entrance, and fitting to the Life Is Beautiful message,...

The third day of Lollapalooza 2023 highlighted the big presence of several South Korean acts this year, including Tomorrow x Together headlining for the first time on Saturday (they performed earlier in the day in 2022) and the fest also featured its first-ever K-pop girl group NewJeans on Thursday, marking the group’s first-ever U.S. performance. It also featured great hip-hop sets, including headliner Pusha T.
The day also featured a steady course of rain, which muddied the fields and likely contributed to it feeling not as crowded throughout the day as Thursday and Friday.

PinkPantheress follows the “Boy’s A Liar Pt. 2” remix with Ice Spice with another collab, this time with Destroy Lonely for “Turn Your Phone Off.”
The song narrates the story of an unwanted caller/ex-lover that PinkPantheress harbors mixed feelings about. “I turned my phone off but your calls still came through/I reply when they do ’cause I want to chat to you,” she sings in the high-speed chorus. “Then the next day we try again and again/I pick up when you call me so we won’t see the end.

Apple recently implemented a new feature on iPhones and Apple Watches that’s intended to automatically alert first responders if the user has been involved in a car crash. That all sounds fine and dandy, but Apple’s product team must not have had mosh pits in mind, because Bonnaroo attendees apparently made a bunch of accidental 911 calls while jamming out Thursday.
Police in Manchester, Tennessee alerted fest-goers of the fiasco on Twitter: “Mpd has responded to multiple accidental 911 calls at Bonnaroo. It’s likely that these calls are a result of ‘Crash Detection Mode,’ a new feature on Apple iPhones. Please be mindful and consider deactivating this feature on your phone until Bonnaroo concludes.” The official Bonnaroo Twitter account also chimed in: “Let’s work as a team to resolve this!”

Governors Ball 2023 brought the biggest artists in music out to its jam-packed party in New York this past weekend, and the performances looked epic as hell. The three-day event, which took place at Queens's Flushing Meadow-Corona Park June 9-11, featured a stacked lineup with Lizzo, Kendrick Lamar, and Odesza as headliners. Other big-name performers included Lil Uzi Vert, Diplo, Lil Baby, Kim Petras, Lil Nas X, Ice Spice, Joey Bada$$, and many more.
In spite of a rainstorm and some wildfire smoke that blanketed New York earlier in the week, the 2023 festival still went on as scheduled with some memorable highlights for concertgoers - including a historical performance from Aespa on June 10, who were the first K-pop group to ever make an appearance on the Governors Ball stage. Another big moment was Sunday closer Lamar, who brought out his cousin and frequent collaborator Baby Keem for a surprise performance of their 2021 single "Family Ties.

If Governors Ball is back, it must be summer in New York. The annual festival returned to Queens in early June in roomy new digs: Flushing Meadows Corona Park, just down the block from its 2021-22 home at Citi Field. The sprawling, tree-lined grounds were reminiscent of Gov Ball’s years on Randall’s Island, for anyone whose memories go back as far as the 2010s, only nicer and easier to get to by public transit. With one rainstorm aside, it was a beautiful weekend made all the more welcome...

Depeche Mode, the pioneering ‘80s U.K. technopop band, has long had a strong following in Los Angeles — thanks to their exposure on local alternative stalwart Kroq — and now they’re proving a favorite of film and TV creative executives.
The group, consisting of co-founders Martin Gore and vocalist Dave Gahan after the death of keyboardist Andrew Fletcher in May 2022, is on a roll following its 2020 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where they were introduced by Charlize Theron, who called them “the soundtrack of my life.”
Depeche Mode’s new Mute/Columbia Records album, “Memento Mori,” comes out March 24, their first since 2017’s “Spirit” and 15th overall, which will be followed by a year-long tour that launches March 23 in Sacramento and includes a show at L.A.’s Kia Forum on March 28 and four concluding area shows in December, two apiece at Kia and Crypto.com Arena.

In response to Tennessee signing into law a ban on drag shows and other “adult cabaret” performances on public properties and other places where they could be watched by minors, Bonnaroo has issued a statement promising it will continue welcoming “people of all walks of life.”
“Bonnaroo has and always will be a place for inclusivity, a safe haven for people of all walks of life, and a champion of self-expression,” the statement reads. “Rest assured The Farm will remain a sanctuary for those freedoms and Bonnaroovians will see no changes in programming or celebration of self-expression at the festival.”
In addition to making Tennessee the first state to restrict drag performances, governor Bill Lee also signed a separate bill banning gender-affirming care for transgender youth.

Beyoncé made history at the 2023 Grammy Awards when she became the most-awarded person in the Recording Academy’s history, with a total of 32 golden gramophones to her name. The “Alien Superstar” singer took the stage to accept her thirty-second Grammy Award at the ceremony and gave an emotional speech thanking those important to her. But for retired basketball star Magic Johnson, more should’ve been done to mark the momentous occasion.

The 2023 Grammy Awards took place on Sunday, February 5 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
Beyoncé led with the most nominations with nine in total while Kendrick Lamar received eight. Jay-Z earned five nominations, tying his wife, Beyoncé, for the most nominations in Grammys history at 88.
Beyoncé and the contemporary Christian music collective Maverick City Music each won the most awards with four trophies. Beyoncé’s four victories this year for Best Dance/Electronic Recording, Best Traditional R&b Performance, Best R&b Song and Best Dance/Electronic Music Album made her the artist with the most Grammy wins in history with 32.
However, Beyoncé failed to scoop up the night’s three major awards: Song of the Year (Bonnie Raitt‘s “Just Like That”), Record of the Year (Lizzo‘s “About Damn Time”) and Album of the Year (Harry Styles‘ Harry’s House).
Lizzo appeared visibly stunned by her win.

The first batch of winners at the 2023 Grammy Awards has been announced! The show is far from over, and Beyoncé has already become the most-awarded artist in the Recording Academy's history. Other performers are also cleaning up with exciting wins. This year's main event is, once again, hosted by Trevor Noah - who served as the Mc in 2021 and 2022 - who, in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, teased that it'll be "the most star-studded room the Grammys has been for many, many years."
The 2023 Grammy nominee pool was stacked with heavy-hitting artists. On Nov. 15, the Recording Academy revealed the 2023 nominations across all 91 categories, some of which were presented by past Grammy winners like Olivia Rodrigo, John Legend, and Machine Gun Kelly.
