The 2023 White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C. kicked off with an opening message from Arnold Schwarzenegger on Saturday night, with a surprise appearance by Danny DeVito, who starred alongside Schwarzenegger as genetically engineered fraternal twins in the 1988 comedy Twins.
The 75-year-old actor-turned-politician began his message by saying, “It’s fantastic to speak to all of you here for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Wow, what an event.”

“I didn’t come here to roast anybody or to make jokes or anything like that. I just simply wanted to say thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you gathered here today because our country would not be the shining beacon of freedom that welcomes people like me without the free press. Let’s be honest about that,” the former governor of California said.
“I wouldn’t be the Arnold that you know without the press.

President Joe Biden spent a great deal of his speech at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on the fate of journalists held in captivity, vowing, “I promise you. I am working like hell to get them home.”
Still in a tone of seriousness, Biden said, “I believe in the First Amendment, and not just because my good friend Jimmy Madison wrote it.”
It took a few beats for many of the 2,600 or so packed into the Washington Hilton subterranean ballroom that the president was making a transition to the satirical portion of his remarks. By the time that he got to a Don Lemon joke, it was on.

Updated with latest attendees, livestream link: President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, will attend Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, underscoring how one of the biggest social nights of the year for Beltway media and politicos has lasted despite predictions of its demise.
The sold-out event at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night also is expected to draw celebrities and other notables, with attendees scheduled to include John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, as well as the Tennessee state lawmakers who were ousted, then reinstated, for their protest over gun violence. Roy Wood Jr., correspondent for The Daily Show, will headline the event. He will follow Biden’s stand-up material — and given the media events of the week, there will be plenty of material.

Updated, with additional comment: Jason Sudeikis and the cast of the Apple+ series Ted Lasso appeared at the top of the White House briefing on Monday, telling reporters that he wanted to promote the message of mental well being.
“The big theme of the show is to check in with your neighbor, your coworker, your friends, your family, and ask how they are doing, and listen, sincerely,” Sudeikis said. “You all ask questions for a living, but you all listen for a living. So who am I preaching to? The choir, that is.”
He added, “And while it is easier said than done, we also have to know that we shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help ourselves.”
Their appearance preceded a planned closed door meeting with President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden to talk about mental health.
