Written by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola, Gotham by Gaslight is considered to be the first DC Elseworlds story, which was lauded following its alternate take on the Batman mythos. Set in the Victorian era, the story follows Batman’s quest to apprehend Jack the Ripper, based on the infamous real-life serial killer, and the story was finally adapted into an animated feature in 2018.
However, the animated feature didn’t see Kevin Conroy return to voice the caped crusader, and per Bruce Timm, it was due to marketing reasons.

DC Comics will resurrect their 'out-of-continuity', "Elseworlds" concepts, with new titles available in 2024, including "Gotham by Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age", "Batman the Barbarian", "Green Lantern: Dark" and a whole lot more:
"...'Elseworlds' was established to feature DC characters in settings outside regular comic book continuity, with 'The Batman' movie franchise a prome example if this imaginative shift."
"Out-of-continuity stories have always been a pillar of DC publishing, granting creators the ability to explore all the wild corners of the 'DC Universe'", said DC Editor Ben Abernathy. "We’re excited to bring a whole new slate of titles under the 'Elseworlds' banner in 2024, combining some all-new titles from top storytellers, as well as sequels from the current DC line that fit that same out-of-continuity aesthetic."
Writers and illustrators include Andy Diggle, Leandro Fernandez, Brian Augustyn, Mike Mignola, Greg Smallwood, Jay Kristoff and Tirso Cons.

Video games can break your heart. It is a business built on creativity, scheduling, manpower, collaboration, and customer demand. Not everything works out. A company can have a brilliant concept and all the talent, but due to a few bad decisions or lack of funds, it could come out as a husk of what it was meant to be.
At least those failed games get to hit the shelf, though. Some dreams lead to dead ends. Amazing game designs never see the light of day for one reason or another. Maybe you have an interesting idea for a Mario spinoff that Nintendo shoots down. Maybe you put work into a game based on a popular movie that the higher-ups decide is not economically viable. Maybe your violent fighting game is nixed because the people you work for are bought out by another company who do not agree with your vision.

At this point, it still isn't clear exactly what DC Studios' co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have planned, or how hard a reboot their new films will be. Henry Cavill's "return" to the part of Superman was short-lived, "Wonder Woman 3" has been canceled (though Gal Gadot hasn't exited yet), and it doesn't look like the Rock's take on Black Adam is included in their plans.
At the same time, it seems unlikely that Gunn would also dump his personal projects, "The Suicide Squad" and "Peacemaker." He's also said that he doesn't plan to just preserve the characters and actors from those projects either. Gunn has described his and Safran's ambitions for DC as, "the Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows, & animated projects."
That would seem to indicate a more unified "shared universe" approach. This would be consistent with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav...

For Nadine, Carrie, and Allie.
Mark Waid suggested we express our condolences over Brian’s passing and tell you what he meant to us. Brian meant far more to me than I could ever express with words, but I’ll try.
I have a mentor program, Bad Boy Studios. Alisande Morales (Ali), Brian’s former assistant is an alumnus.
When I learned Ali was working with Brian, I told him she was excellent; he said Ali was the best thing to come out of Bad Boy Studios, and that’s saying something.
So I told him an Ali story.
Every person from the studio knows the story I’m talking about; I only have to say one word. Phone.
I never told Ali what Brian said. I asked Brian not to say anything to her, I promised Ali I would not share that story with anyone outside of the studio.

While we’re getting lots of news about Matt Reeves’ The Batman, it appears that Warner Bros. are still keen to develop more standalone projects for the Dark Knight. And that’s because according to our sources, the same ones who told us Diana would get her golden eagle armor in Wonder Woman: 1984, and that Han was returning in Fast & Furious 9, WB want to build on the success of Joker with Elseworlds-style pictures placing familiar DC characters in unusual situations.
One of these projects is tipped to be a new take on Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, which has already had a well-received animated adaptation and is now set to get the live-action treatment, with the studio said to be in early, early development on it. As fans will know, the original one-shot came out in 1989, courtesy of Brian Augustyn, Mike Mignola and P. Craig Russell and focused...

The notion of placing Batman in other times and places seems so obvious now, but when Brian Augustyn first hatched the notion with Mark Waid, it was radical. As Augustyn recounts on the 21 minute Caped Fear: The First Elseworld featurette, it was immediately embraced. So enticing was the concept that when artist Mike Mignola first heard about it, he kept saying he had no time but then kept contributing ideas that it was clear he’d make the time.
Gotham by Gaslight pitted an 1889 Dark Knight against Jack the Ripper, come to Gotham City. It was moody, atmospheric, and somber, a perfect Victorian take on the crimefighter. As a result, it ignited imitators, prompting DC Comics to finally invent the Elseworlds imprint and inspired Augustyn to write a sequel, Master of the Future, set three years later as Gotham hosted the American Discovery Exposition.

Each year, the fine folks at Warner Bros. Animation serve up a handful of films based on DC properties and, more often than not, they knock it out of the park. Not only that, but a significant portion of the fanbase argues that they’re superior to what’s offered in the live action realm. And, to be completely honest, I have to concede in most cases.

After appearing in a litany of films both live action and animated, TV series and video games, the average Joe may think there’s not much else that can be done with the Dark Knight. Fortunately, the folks at Warner Bros. Animation have begun branching out in recent years, successfully mining the character’s 79-year comic book history. A couple years back, we saw the Bat Family generously fleshed out in Bad Blood and, now, we’ve been treated to something drastically different in the form of Batman: Gotham by Gaslight.

DC's latest straight-to-dvd animated movie is here, and it's the classic one-off Elseworld's tale Batman: Gotham By Gaslight. Drawn by Hellboy's Mike Mignola and written by Brian Augustyn, Gotham By Gaslight told the tale of how Batman beat up and solved the Jack the Ripper case. I mean, I don't know why people say it's unsolved. Anyway, while the animation looks solid, it does unfortunately pale in comparison to... Read More...

With a trailer to give fans a look at the upcoming Elseworlds animated Batman adventure, WB Animation has announced when fans will be able to get the Gotham By Gaslight blu-ray, along with all the special features coming with it. Come inside for all the details!
DC's Animated films are almost always a lot of fun to watch. Some of my favorites, however, are the ones that eschew the Animated Universe continuinty in favor of something different (like Gods and Monsters). As such, I'm really excited to see how Batman: Gotham By Gaslight turns out. It sees a different Batman take on Jack the Ripper in a turn of the century Gotham.
It's a neat concept, and worked great in the comics. Let's just hope the same magic works in the animated film when it releases on February 6, 2018:

DC Entertainment has released a new trailer for their upcoming animated feature, Batman: Gotham By Gaslight.
The story is set in the 1800s and it pitted the Dark Knight against the legendary serial killer Jack the Ripper and a death-dealer from the skies over Gotham. The film is an adaption of the popular 1989 comic that introduced the Victorian Era version of The Dark Knight. I remember reading this comic for the first time. It was really quite intriguing at the time. I loved the concept of a Victorian era Batman facing off with Jack the Ripper! The comic was written by Brian Augustyn and drawn by Mike Mignola (Hellboy). Here's the synopsis that was released:
In an age of mystery and superstition, how would the people of Gotham react to a weird creature of the night, a bat-garbed vigilante feared by the guilty and the innocent alike? The very first...

Warner Animation’s just-released Batman and Harley Quinn is an interesting project from the standpoint of it being a more mature sequel to the Batman: The Animated Series while still fitting into the now cohesive DC Animated Universe. It has the look and feel of the classic series while the content and themes are vastly different in keeping with Harley’s prominence in all-things DC these days along with upping the stakes in a longer production.
That said, the production is very entertaining and a welcome 30th film in the line of animated projects (the DC Universe: 10th Anniversary Collection is expected in November).
It’s a lot of fun to have Bruce Timm, Harley’s co-creator back in action as a co-scriptwriter. Sam Liu is also back to direct so we have a lot of veteran talent to bring tremendous affection to the project and it shows in every detail.

Last month, we found out that Batman: Gotham by Gaslight would be the latest comic book to be turned into a DC universe animated movie. Now, we have our first look at the film courtesy of this eight-minute sneak peak that’s arrived online, after being featured on the Batman And Harley Quinn DVD/Blu-ray.
Written by Brian Augustyn with art by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, 1989’s Gotham By Gaslight is often credited as kickstarting the DC Elseworlds imprint, which produced out-of-continuity stories that gave familiar characters a fresh twist. Gaslight moves the Batman mythos to Victorian times and sees a steampunk-themed version of the Dark Knight hunt down Jack the Ripper, who’s travelled from London to Gotham.
The sneak peak gives us a glimpse at various snippets of the movie, and thankfully it looks to be one of the more visually-impressive DC animated efforts we’ve seen so far.

We recently learned that DC Entertainment was developing a new animated film based on Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola's awesome 1989 Victorian era Batman comic Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. Today we have a very cool 8-minute sneak peek that gives us our first look at footage from the movie and I like what I'm seeing!
The story is set in the 1800s and it pitted the Dark Knight against the legendary serial killer Jack the Ripper and a death-dealer from the skies over Gotham! It's a fantastic story and it looks like it could make for a solid animated film. I'm actually pretty stoked about this!
Check out the sneak peek video below and let us know what you think! ...
