With a fast-growing box office expected to hit the billion-dollar mark by 2030 and rising numbers of streaming subscriptions, Saudi Arabia is at a key point in its journey into becoming a key global player when it comes to TV and film production.
However, with a market that is only five years old — with Saudi lifting its 35-year ban on cinema in 2018 — local audiences are yet to flock to locally made content, which is still relatively scarce when it comes to the big screen.
While Saudi production catches up with the potential market, the popularity of two other national entertainment industries has become obvious in the Middle East country: India’s Bollywood and South Korea’s Hallyuwood. This trend led the Red Sea Film Festival’s industry conversation arm Red Sea 360 to invite leading executives from these countries to understand the global impact of both industries.

“Last Film Show” (aka “Chhello Show”), India’s Oscar contender, was this weekend named winner of the Asian World Film Festival in Los Angeles.
Writer-director Pan Nalin and producer Dheer Momaya were presented with the Snow Leopard trophy at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills.
“The best movie encompasses everything we want to see in a great film: good storytelling, moving performances, technically appealing, visually intoxicating and heartfelt connectivity to audiences. We received a line of very good movies this year and it was a tough decision. But this film reminded us of why we loved cinema. It reminded us of cinema’s ability to both enchant and inspire. It is a love letter to cinema to light and to life itself,” said festival jurors Janet Nepales and Pitof Jean-Christophe.
The film has been on the festival circuit for over a year, since debuting in in June 2021 at the Tribeca Film Festival.

On 18th May, Ritviz dropped the first part of a mini-series on his YouTube channel, called “Cabin Fever”, a collaborative effort led by Jugaad Motion Pictures and Writer/Director Pranav Bhasin. Cabin Fever captures the emotional lives of 2 young people enduring the lockdowns.
Dheer Momaya, producer and founder at Jugaad Motion Pictures, commented: “Jugaad is a creative powerhouse. We couldn’t sit around waiting for the lockdowns to lift. People are still living their lives, the human experience hasn’t stopped with the lockdown. If anything, it’s been more nuanced. We wanted to tell a story that reflected the zeitgeist, but also a story that we could execute while in quarantine.”

Ukrainian filmmaker Dar Gai, whose “Namdev Bhau in Search of Silence” has its world premiere in Busan’s A Window on Asian Cinema strand, has had a fascinating passage to India. The philosophy major spent 10 years acting, directing and organizing festivals in Ukraine. While she was familiar with Western culture, the east was yet to be conquered. So she fired off resumes to schools in China, Japan and India. Soon an invitation letter arrived from the prestigious Scindia School for boys, in Gwalior, central India, to teach theatre and German.
“India became a major source of inspiration for my scripts,” said Gai. “I remember the time when I was coming up with at least three feature film ideas every day. I felt a strong sense of connection with the Indian culture. I felt at home.
But who knows really, maybe I would have been shooting a Japanese film right now...
