Masters of the Air was a labor of love for executive producers Gary Goetzman, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. The Apple TV+ series marks the third and final installment of the trio’s war drama miniseries, after Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
The series took three years to create and cost between $250 million and $300 million to produce, including a hefty $60 million in Covid compliance costs to film during the pandemic. The result was an epic nine-part series with 325 speaking parts and an amazing cast of up-and-coming actors.
“The best stories are from history,” said Goetzman during a discussion at the Deadline and Apple TV+ event Inside the Finale, joined by series cast members Barry Keoghan, Callum Turner, Rafferty Law, Josiah Cross, Nate Mann and Anthony Boyle. “Nonfiction is always more fascinating than fiction, and there’s no greater stories of human cost, triumph, passion, love… the biggest story of...

"Direct engagement with the camera can add a lot." Lionsgate has unveiled the official trailer for an indie comedy titled The Moon and Back, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Leah Bleich. This initially premiered in 2022 at a few small regional film festivals, and is finally set for a VOD release in April this spring after a two year wait. A year after her father's death, high schooler Lydia Gilbert feels completely lost - until she discovers something: a space opera script in need of a blockbuster budget, written by her father. She picks up an old VHS camcorder and whatever else she can find to try & actually make the movie. A nerdy coming-of-age comedy starring Isabel May as Lydia, along with Nat Faxon, Missi Pyle, P.J. Byrne, and Miles Gutierrez-Riley. Despite the heartfelt story, this film looks rather messy & forgettable. // Continue Reading ›...

There are hundreds of ways to die in a bomber plane and you will see all of them in Apple TV+’s latest war drama series Masters of the Air. From the producers of epic shows like The Pacific and Band of Brothers, we get sort of a third entry in the World War II series by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. Created by John Shiban and John Orloff, the World War II drama series revolves around the pilots in the 100th Bomb Group, as they take the war to Hitler’s doorsteps.
Like the previous two WWII shows by Spielberg and Hanks, Masters of the Air is also incredibly epic and poignant. From the first few episodes you might think that the Apple TV+ series is just a cool action drama with some really depressing moments but it soon shows us the horrors of war and...

Scott Speedman of The Strangers and Underworld has joined Jurnee Smollett (Birds of Prey) and Isabel May of the Yellowstone prequel series 1883 in the thriller Sunflower – and according to The Hollywood Reporter, Speedman will be playing the villain in the film!
Sunflower will mark the feature directorial debut of writer Misha Green. She and Smollett previously worked together on the TV shows Underground and Lovecraft Country. Green created Underground with Joe Pokaski and developed Lovecraft Country from the Matt Ruff novel. Her first directing credit was on an episode of Lovecraft Country.
After spending more than a decade in development hell, Sunflower is finally moving forward at Lionsgate. The screenplay Green wrote for the film was so highly regarded that it was on the Black List back in 2008. “Lovecraft Country” creator Misha Green will be making her feature directorial debut with Lionsgate’s Sunflower, and THR reports that actor Scott Speedman has been tapped to play the film’s villain.
In Sunflower, two women struggle to escape from a deranged college professor who holds them hostage on a remote sunflower farm.
Speedman joins previously announced cast members Jurnee Smollett (“Lovecraft Country”) and Isabel May (“1883”). Smollett and May play the two women attempting to escape the deranged college professor played by Speedman.
Green wrote the script and will also produce alongside Craig J. Flores.
“Everyone at our studio was completely drawn in by the way Misha, Jurnee, and the ‘Lovecraft Country’ team worked so confidently to create a compelling genre series – then subverted the genre and reinvented it through a new lens,” said Nathan Kahane, President of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “That’s the opportunity with Sunflower. [This story contains spoilers from 1883, 1923 and Yellowstone season five.]
With each new series in the megahit Yellowstone franchise, a new generation of Duttons emerges. After launching in 2018 with Kevin Costner’s central patriarch John Dutton and his immediate family, creator Taylor Sheridan traveled back in time to expand the franchise and introduce elder generations of Duttons, first with the single season of 1883 and now with the series 1923, which has been renewed for a second season.
The Dutton family tree has branched out as Yellowstone has been airing, with the flagship series currently at the halfway point in its fifth and final run. First, viewers followed James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) on their family’s treacherous journey west through the Great Plains in 1883, a trek that would ultimately lead to what becomes the Yellowstone ranch of the flagship series. And later, 1923 would introduce the audience to Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren), the Duttons who...

Prolific creator Taylor Sheridan has a ton of projects out, and more on the way. He's responsible for the juggernaut Paramount series "Yellowstone," as well as its spin-off/prequels "1883" and "1923," plus "Lawmen: Bass Reeves" coming soon. Outside of that franchise, he's got "Mayor of Kingstown," "Tulsa King," and "Special Ops: Lioness." He's able to make a phone call to Harrison Ford (Jacob Dutton) and Helen Mirren (Cara Dutton) to cast them in "1923," and can pull names like Nicole Kidman and Sylvester Stallone. It feels like his shows are responsible for most of Paramount+'s original library, and while that may not be completely true, it's not far off.
When "1883" was in development, Sheridan got a call that Paramount had a new streaming service on the way, and since "Yellowstone" was streaming over at Peacock due to a previous deal, the studio wanted "1883" for its own new service,...

True to its lineage as part of the Dutton-verse, Yellowstone prequel 1883 delivered a big audience for the start of its cable run.
The Paramount+ series, which premiered in late 2021, is getting a full-season run on Paramount Network over the summer, and it drew a lot of eyeballs for its June 18 debut on the cable outlet. The two-episode premiere drew 3.8 million viewers on its first night, including replays and simulcasts on five other Paramount Global cable channels. The two episodes on Paramount Network averaged 1.52 million viewers, and simulcasts on Comedy Central, CMT, MTV, Pop and TV Land added about a million more to each episode. Replays contributed the rest.
That’s a strong showing, particularly considering that 1883 has been available to stream in its entirety for more than a year. In fact, were it a new series, it would be the most watched scripted debut on cable since The Walking Dead: World Beyond...

The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Harry Shearer (“The Simpsons”) was the former category’s first champion, having been nominated once before for the same series.
The 2023 Best Character Voice-Over ballot consists of 148 performances, which is down by 74 from last year. Seeking her third victory is Maya Rudolph, who plays Connie the Hormone Monstress on “Big Mouth.” Also in the mix are former winners Shearer, Hank Azaria (“The Simpsons”), Alex Borstein (“Family Guy”), and Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”).

Isabel May captured audience hearts as Elsa Dutton on 1883. But when the actress reflects on her breakout role in the Yellowstone prequel series, she’s humble.
“It didn’t feel like an explosion for me, at least,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I don’t really participate in social media. But I think what’s telling is when you are at a grocery store and you bump into someone and they look at your face, and you know they recognize you, and then their eyes fill up with tears. I don’t get recognized very often, but when I do it’s that; it’s very emotional.”

If you’re a fan of “Yellowstone,” you know that the show and its spin-off prequel series are filled with beautiful landscapes, seriously dramatic events and scene-stealing characters that you love to hate or hate to love. But what you may not know is all the ins and outs of every character’s past and their lineage, especially the Dutton family. There have been sons, adopted sons, daughters, aunts and uncles taking care of nephews, friends, enemies, legacy-altering events, and we still don’t officially know who John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) grandfather is!
And with the end of “Yellowstone” Season 5 coming later this year — which will also mark the end of the series — now is the perfect time to get the “Yellowstone” timeline all straightened out, especially because the franchise-expanding spin-offs are just getting started.

Warner Bros. Discovery Boss David Zaslav’s decision Tuesday to oust CNN boss Chris Licht represents the embattled exec’s first major about-face since ascending to the merged conglomerate’s CEO post two years ago. On the off chance that the newly contrite Zaslav remains in mea culpa mode for another day or so, we are appealing to the Hollywood mogul to undo a few of his other controversial decisions.

Remember when 1883 Season 1 launched on Paramount Network out of Yellowstone?
At the time, a handful of episodes aired before viewers had to stream the rest of the episodes on Paramount+.
It caused a lot of commotion amongst fans who did not have the streaming service.
Thankfully, those fans are getting their wish and will be able to watch all episodes of 1883 this summer on Paramount Network.
1883, the Yellowstone Origin story, will air weekly on Paramount Network beginning Sunday, June 18 at 8 Pm Et/Pt.
The good TV news doesn't stop there, either.
The special broadcast will include extended featurettes at the end of each episode, meaning 1883 fanatics can get an inside look at how the episodes were made, among other things.
1883 follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America.

Isabel May, whose previous credits include Alexa & Katie, Let’s Scare Julie, Run Hide Fight, I Want You Back, and the Yellowstone prequel series 1883, has signed on to join Jurnee Smollett (Birds of Prey) in the thriller Sunflower, which is set to mark the feature directorial debut of writer Misha Green.
Green and Smollett previously worked together on the TV shows Underground and Lovecraft Country.
“Lovecraft Country” creator Misha Green will be making her feature directorial debut with Lionsgate’s Sunflower, and Deadline brings us some more casting news this week.
Jurnee Smollett (“Lovecraft Country”) will re-team with Misha Green and star in the film, we previously learned, and Isabel May (“1883”) has now also joined the cast.
In Sunflower, two women struggle to escape from a deranged college professor who holds them hostage on a remote sunflower farm.
The following article contains spoilers for "1923."
The juggernaut "Yellowstone" started creator Taylor Sheridan's Dutton family universe. The series, set in the present day, has spawned the prequels "1883" and "1923," giving fans the tragic backstory of the ranching family in Montana. Like "1883" did with Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, who played Margaret and James Dutton, "1923" nabbed some big-name actors in Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, who play Jacob and Cara Dutton.
The saga of the Dutton family is a dark one, with James and Margaret's daughter Elsa (Isabel May) dying from an arrow wound in "1883." James dies after an attack, and Margaret freezes to death in the snow. Jacob and Cara come to take over the ranch and raise the surviving sons John (James Badge Dale) and Spencer (Brandon Sklenar). That isn't the end of the deaths, though, and John Dutton (who was played by Audie Rick...

This post contains spoilers for the finale of "1883."
The "Yellowstone" prequel "1883" only ran for a single season, but it packed a wallop in terms of emotion. Even if you weren't caught up with "Yellowstone," the series about the Dutton family's tragic travels out west to find a home in what would ultimately be Montana was powerful. In the series, Tim McGraw plays James Dutton, the great-great-grandfather of "Yellowstone" patriarch John Dutton III (Kevin Costner), and McGraw's real-life wife Faith Hill plays James' wife, Margaret Dutton. Together with their children, including the teenage Elsa (Isabel May), the family travels toward Oregon with a group of European immigrants and some Pinkerton guards.
If you've watched the series (and read the headline), you know that Elsa ultimately passes away from an infected arrow wound in Montana, leading the family to settle in the place of her death. It was an incredibly powerful scene,...

The massive success of the Paramount+ series Yellowstone has led to two prequels that have also been well-received. In the first prequel, 1883, the Duttons are heading west through dangerous events and sweeping landscapes. Along the way, there was a moving scene between Shea (played by Sam Elliot) and Elsa (Isabel May). But according to Elliot, the scene was originally set up to start differently–and he never thought it would work.

1883 is the much-acclaimed prequel to Yosemite. It follows the Dutton family as they travel west toward Oregon. Elliot plays Shea, a former soldier, and widower who is leading the expedition. One of the members of the party is Elsa, a 17-year-old who faces relentless loss on the journey.

Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan has truly found his dream life. As a writer, showrunner, and rancher, all he desires is to spend his days riding horses and shooting television series right in his own backyard.
Indeed, Sheridan not only films on one of the world’s largest ranches but also owns one. The 1883 showrunner acquired the renowned Four Sixes Ranch last year, an ideal situation as he gears up for an additional Yellowstone spinoff. Only this time, he can start production right on his own ranch.

1923 Episode 8
In the 1923 season 1 finale, there’s a well-written little nugget of dialogue spoken by breakout character Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves) when she tells her father, with conviction, that she “believes in right now.” While inspiring, that affirmation sticks out because of the inherent dramatic irony.
Yellowstone supercreator, Taylor Sheridan, who only half a decade ago barely had one show to his name, now helms nine television shows, all in varying degrees of production. On the surface, he certainly seems like a man who has to live in the “right now”, as his time is so precious, it would be difficult to think about nice different things at the same time, so best to focus on the here and now. However, it may be fair to say that his writing has recently suffered on several of his...

Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” might be in hibernation but that doesn’t mean that you are totally deprived of Dutton-related drama, as prequel series “1923” is currently streaming. It’s full of all the things that make “Yellowstone” so special – frontier justice, cowboys, big movie stars and a surprising amount of pistol whipping.
“1923” picks up after the events of “1883.” Harrison Ford plays Jacob Dutton, the brother of James Dutton (Tim McGraw’s character on “1883”). After James and Margaret (Faith Hill) passed away, Jacob and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren) take the boys in. Jack Dutton (Darren Mann) is the dedicated cowboy and ranchman while Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), having Ptsd from World War I, retreats to Africa to hunt big game. In a very real way we are seeing the beginnings of the Yellowstone ranch, not just in the buildings but in the craggy philosophy and the psychic trauma that seems to permeate the soil.

The Yellowstone universe is expanding yet again, this time with another generation of Duttons in the 1940s. On the heels of 1883 and 1923, Taylor Sheridan’s new Yellowstone prequel 1944 is officially in the works. And once again, fans should expect to see new Dutton faces when the official cast list is revealed.
Darren Mann as Jack and Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth | Christopher Saunders/Paramount+ The ‘Yellowstone’ prequels are introducing fans to every Dutton ranching generation
Yellowstone fans met the first generation of Duttons in the limited series 1883, which starred Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as James and Margaret Dutton. Those episodes told the story of how they traveled the Oregon Trail with their children — Elsa (Isabel May) and John (Audie Rick) — and how they chose the land in Montana that would eventually become the Dutton Ranch in Yellowstone.
The prequel 1923 introduced the next generation of Duttons after James and Margaret’s passing.

After a couple of lean years, Berlin is ready to feast.
Its European Film Market kicks off on Thursday, Feb. 16 with hundreds of finished films and scores of new packages and projects for every cinematic taste and budget. Even as sellers are still setting up their stands at the EFM’s Martin Gropius Bau headquarters, new packages continue to come thick and fast.
Black Bear International, which helped close a deal with Lionsgate (for domestic) and Amazon (for multiple international territories) for Guy Ritchie’s World War II actioner The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare on the eve of Berlin, added the buzzy musical project Fred & Ginger, about Hollywood dance legends Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, played by Jamie Bell and Margaret Qualley, to its EFM slate. Black Bear will handle international sales of the project, previously at Amazon, with UTA Independent Film Group and 30West co-repping the U.S.

1923 Episode 5
To become one of the more prolific television writers in the modern age, one must have your proverbial finger on the pulse of your audience.
Taylor Sheridan, Paramount’s country-fed celebutante, has been able to tap into something with his rabid audience that transcends political affiliation, gender, and age, and he’s been able to do it consistently for the better part of half a decade. The longevity of his empire is certainly one of the more impressive aspects, as he expands not only the Yellowstone universe, but his impressive catalog of shows, and he’s able to do so, because he seemingly knows how his audience is feeling.
Perhaps, however, he’s mirroring that a little too much. After a short hiatus, the second prequel in the aforementioned Dutton-saga, 1923 returned with “Ghost of Zebrina.” The...

Paramount+ is continuing its Dutton family origin story.
The streamer has renewed Yellowstone prequel 1923 for a second season after the drama’s record-breaking first season, where the premiere became the most watched series premiere on cable in 2022.
Taylor Sheridan’s series follows the ancestors of the current Dutton clan of Yellowstone and is led by Harrison Ford’s Jacob and Helen Mirren’s Cara. The newest installment in the family’s origin story takes place in the early 20th century “when pandemics historic drought, and the end of Prohibition all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home,” according to Paramount+.

1923 picked up a few decades after Sheridan’s first Yellowstone origin series, 1883, which ran for one season and starred Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as James and Margaret Dutton. Their daughter Elsa, played by Isabel May, narrated the series and continues to narrate 1923.

Occasionally, the joy of watching your favorite television show or a new film is discovering an actor for the first time – enjoying their work so thoroughly that you bookmark their name or face in your mind. When you discover that other fans also enjoy that particular actor, it’s almost like being the cool kid on the playground for a split-second. You have the knowledge that you discovered this person first, regardless of the fact you’re only watching them on a television screen.
Taylor Sheridan’s television universe, including the flagship Yellowstone, and the prequels 1883 and now 1923 has been responsible for this kind of revelation more than a few times, as there are almost never weak links within each ensemble cast. Most recently, audiences have fallen in love with the work of Brandon Sklenar and his character, Spencer Dutton, the last survivor of...

1923 fans had a lot of questions about Spencer Dutton when the show first aired. It’s easy to forget that Spencer was introduced in a flashback from Yellowstone. Viewers only got a few brief glimpses of him as a child before 1923 jumped forward to Spencer’s adulthood. We think we know how old Spencer is supposed to be, but a small error adds some confusion.
Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton and Julia Schlaepfer as Alexandra in ‘1923’ | Emerson Miller/Paramount+ How old is Spencer Dutton in ‘1923’?
Spencer Dutton is the youngest son of James and Margaret Dutton. His oldest sister Elsa died on the journey to Montana in 1883. His brother John was only five years old at the time of the journey. Yellowstone Season 4 flashed back to the year 1893.
By this time, James and Margaret are settled in Montana. John would be fifteen years old, and he now has a younger brother named Spencer.

Consider Spencer Dutton and Alexandra’s love bubble popped. After weeks of an uninterrupted whirlwind romance in Africa (save for a tense night with some lions), it’s Montana or bust for the engaged pair in 1923 Episode 5 (premiering February 5 on Paramount+). By the looks of the trailer, it won’t be an easy trek across the globe. Brandon Sklenar spoke with TV Insider to preview the danger ahead for him and co-star Julia Schlaepfer, as well as help us get to know his brooding Dutton a little bit better. Sklenar plays the youngest nephew of Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) in the Yellowstone prequel. He’s the younger brother to the late Elsa Dutton (Isabel May), his sister he never met, and John Dutton, Sr. (James Badge Dale), who was killed in a gunfight in 1923 Episode 3, and youngest son of James Dutton (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton...

[This story contains spoilers for 1923’s first four episodes.]
Taylor Sheridan’s first Yellowstone prequel, 1883, told the tragic story of how the Dutton family first settled in Montana, and the series was marketed with stars Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill at the forefront. But the Western show was ultimately about Isabel May’s Elsa Dutton, who served as the narrator, as well as the audience’s eyes and ears into that perilous time in the West.
Well, 1883’s follow-up, 1923, appears to be following in the footsteps of its predecessor. The Paramount+ series sold itself with Hollywood heavyweights like Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, but the story appears to revolve around Brandon Sklenar’s Spencer Dutton, the youngest son of James (McGraw) and Margaret (Hill) Dutton, and nephew of Jacob (Ford) and Cara (Mirren) Dutton. James Badge Dale, who plays Spencer’s older brother John Dutton Sr., even told THR recently that the objective of the first four...

The cast of 1923 attended Taylor Sheridan’s infamous cowboy camp. There the actors learned about the cowboy way of life and were able to get conformable on horseback. They practiced roping, herding cattle, and other skills they would need to film the series. Though the cast enjoyed the camp, it’s a notoriously grueling process to train for a Taylor Sheridan series.
Brian Geraghty as Zane Davis in ‘1923’ | Emerson Miller/Paramount+ Darren Mann and Michelle Randolph describe being extremely sore from cowboy camp
Fans of Taylor Sheridan’s work have probably heard of the screenwriter’s infamous cowboy camp. Actors from Yellowstone, 1883, and now 1923 attended the camp to learn how to ride horses, herd and rope cattle, and learn about the cowboy way of life.
While the actors usually have good things to say about cowboy camp, it’s definitely not a walk in the park. While speaking with Slash Film,...

Dennis Quaid is joining Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone Universe with a role in the 1883 spinoff Bass Reeves.
Quaid is set to play Sherrill Lynn, a Deputy U.S. Marshal in the new series, Variety reports.
He stars opposite David Oyelowo, who will take on the titular role of Bass Reeves.
"Known as the greatest frontier hero in American history, and also believed to be the inspiration for The Lone Ranger, Reeves worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded" reads the official description.
There was a lot of confusion about the future of 1883 when it was picked up for a second season, but the first wrapped with most of the characters dead.
Sam Elliott, Faith Hill, Isabel May, and Tim McGraw are among its stars.
However, franchise overlord Taylor Sheridan revealed that the...

The catalyst of 1923 has already arrived and now, as the Yellowstone prequel prepares to head into the second half of its season, creator Taylor Sheridan’s vision is coming into focus.
“I chose that moment in time [year 1923] to peek back in because you’re seeing the children that we’ve met in 1883 attempting to raise another generation of Dutton,” says Sheridan in a Paramount+ video and The Hollywood Reporter exclusive (below).
When explaining why he picked the year of 1923 to retrace Dutton family lineage, the creator adds that the next prequel chapter in the Yellowstone universe arrives in the backdrop of “a time of great drought, at a time of Prohibition, at a time of all this expansion — the Wild West was truly becoming a relevant center of resources.”
The surviving child viewers had already met from 1883 was young John (Audie Rick), who grew up to become the John Dutton Sr.
