Who Is Eric Dane’s Wife? All About Her As Euphoria Star Thanks Family Amid Als Diagnosis
Image
What Happened To Euphoria Star Eric Dane? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Eric Dane, affectionately dubbed “McSteamy” by Grey’s Anatomy fans, steamed up screens long before his Euphoria days. With a jawline carved by the TV gods and a smolder that could rival a thousand suns, Dane made his mark as Dr. Mark Sloan, the plastic surgeon with a heart and abs of gold.

From Grey’s to The Last Ship to portraying Cal Jacobs in HBO’s chaotic teen drama Euphoria, Dane’s career has been a ride through steamy stethoscopes, naval battles, and deeply flawed fatherhood. Off-screen, things have been just as headline-worthy. In 2004, Eric married Jawbreaker actress Rebecca Gayheart in a surprise Vegas ceremony.

Their chemistry sparked a love story filled with red carpets, growing pains, and two adorable daughters, Billie and Georgia. Though the couple separated in 2018, they’ve kept things cool and co-parented like pros. It’s safe to say,...

19 Years Later, Shonda Rhimes Still Isn’t Over This ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Death (and Neither Are We)
Image
This year, Grey's Anatomy celebrates its 20th anniversary. Since the medical series aired its first episode, hundreds of characters popped in and out every season, and a good number of them didn't make it very far into the show's 21 seasons. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, franchise creator Shonda Rhimes reveals that despite the high body count of the series, there is one death that she still hasn't managed to get over: Denny Duquette's (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

The information is a bit of a shocker, because Denny died pretty early in the series' run, all the way back in Season 2. However, it was also the show's first big death, which had an impact on pretty much everyone who watched it. Denny was admitted to the hospital with a heart condition and immediately fell in love with Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl). When his health gets worse, Izzie breaks a good...

The Scrapped Grey's Anatomy Spin-Off Would Have Ruined The Show's Best Characters
Image
"Grey's Anatomy" has been on the air for a whopping two decades — it actually just celebrated its 20-year anniversary at the end of March 2025 — and in all that time, it's only produced one spin-off. After the long-running medical drama's third season concluded, Kate Walsh, who played Addison Montgomery on Shonda Rhimes' hit series, got her own series titled "Private Practice," which ran for 6 seasons between 2007 and 2013, but there hasn't been another major "Grey's" spin-off since that wrapped up. Apparently, Rhimes did have an idea for a spin-off that would have centered on one of the show's most prominent families.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly while she looked back at 20 years of "Grey's Anatomy," mega-producer Rhimes said she felt like they could have produced way more spin-offs. "On 'Grey's,' there were a bunch," Rhimes said, responding to a question about spin-offs that never actually materialized. "I felt like we could have done 'Chicago Anatomy,...

19 Years Later, This Grey's Anatomy Season Is Still a Perfect Example of 1 of TV's Most Iconic Tropes

Quick LinksSeason 2 Offered One of the Best Love Triangles on TVIzzie and Denny’s Bond Offered a Different Kind of ScandalGrey’s Anatomy Struggles to Match Up to Its Earlier Seasons

On the surface, Grey's Anatomy seems like a conventional medical drama. But, avid fans will know that with its toxic pairings, scandals, and breakups, this show is more like a soap opera than a niche TV drama. Over the past 20 years, the show has introduced a range of jaw-dropping relationships, most of which end up in tears.

However, Season 2 did something really unique with this trope, and a lot of fans tend to overlook it. While this season offers a plethora of seedy love triangles and off-beat relationships, it presented them in a way that had never been shown on primetime TV. So, even as Grey's Anatomy continues to garner a ton of success, it may never live up...

10 Valid Reasons Fans Prefer The Pitt Over Grey's Anatomy
Image
The Pitt first aired in January 2025 and quickly captivated fans with its fast pace and unique format. Even though this series still has a few episodes left of its first season, critics and audiences predict that the show will easily scoop up a ton of awards. If anything, The Pitt proves that the medical drama genre is not dying off, but instead just needed some fresh meat to liven up the competition.

Yet, like any new drama, The Pitt was quickly compared to Grey's Anatomy. Though Shonda Rhimes' critically acclaimed hit still has an avid fan base, many audiences believe that The Pitt could easily overtake it as the best US medical drama. Thus, there are a lot of reasons why fans are shaking off the shackles of Grey's Anatomy and moving towards Max's latest release.

It's a Lot More Accurate Season 1, Episode 3, "9.00 A.M."

15 Best Medical Dramas of the 20th Century, Ranked
Image
Since 2000, fans have had a wealth of modern medical dramas to choose from. From TV shows Grey's Anatomy to more recent shows like The Pitt, these dramas allow audiences to explore the highs and lows of the American healthcare system from the comfort of their own homes. Thus, these shows have managed to break out of their niches and have become some of the most popular shows of the era.

Yet, because audiences are surrounded by such big hitters, audiences tend to forget about older medical dramas. Although the 20th century wasn't plagued by Covid-19 or other serious illnesses, this era focused more on cultural issues and how they impacted the wider population. As such, it could be argued that the most powerful medical dramas are from the 20th century.

The Correct Order To Watch Every Grey's Anatomy Show
Image
When "Grey's Anatomy" premiered as a mid-season replacement in March of 2005 thanks to creator and showrunner Shonda Rhimes, it's safe to say that nobody genuinely thought it would keep running and running and running until it became the longest-running medical drama in TV history. As of this writing, the show is partway through airing its 21st season — and even though Ellen Pompeo, the star of the series who puts the Grey in "Grey's Anatomy" as Dr. Meredith Grey, left the show as a main cast member in its 19th season, it shows no signs of stopping.

Due to the fact that, in real life, hospitals change personnel with some regularity and new intern classes begin their residencies each summer, "Grey's Anatomy" is able to remain (relatively) fresh even with hundreds of episodes under its belt, introducing new intern classes every few years to keep the momentum going. Beyond that, though,...

13 Years Later, Fans Are Still Devastated by This Grey’s Anatomy Character’s Tragic Death
Image
Grey's Anatomy is well recognized for its vast selection of beloved characters, all of whom add a unique touch of flair to this long-running procedural. Not only do these characters help to drum up a ton of dramatic tension, but they help to show the friendships that could only be built in a place like Grey Sloan. So even when everything seems as though it's falling apart, these doctors still manage to work together.

One of the show's most memorable characters is Meredith's half-sister, Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh). Complete with a headstrong attitude and a loving personality, Lexie added a touch of humor and selflessness to this hard-hitting drama. It's hardly a surprise that even 13 years later, some fans are still mourning her loss.

10 Grey's Anatomy Moments Too Disturbing to Watch More Than Once
Image
When it comes to medical dramas, fans can expect a little bit of gore every now and then, especially if it's shown post-watershed. But, since Grey's Anatomy tries to be as medically realistic as possible, it tries to avoid certain motifs and stereotypes. Yet, that doesn't mean that the show isn't teeming with uncomfortable moments or gut-wrenching cases.

While this type of content is subject to taste, many fans feel that the show wouldn't be the same without it. These distressing moments help Grey's Anatomy break away from its workplace dramas and diversify itself from other modern procedurals. So, even though these gory scenes are enough to turn any viewer's stomach, they're integral to the show's canon.

Paging Peds: Why Do So Many Pediatric Surgeons Leave Grey Sloan?
Image
As Grey’s fans prepare to say goodbye to two more brilliant Grey Sloan doctors, we can’t help but notice a fascinating trend throughout the show’s impressive run.

Pediatric surgeons leave Grey Sloan frequently, giving many actors the perfect exit to leave the show with an open-ended storyline should they want to return. Should we assume all Grey Sloan pediatric surgeons will only briefly be on Grey’s Anatomy?

Levi Schmitt is the latest Grey Sloan actor to exit the show after an extended stint on rotation. After a rocky start, Schmitt found his groove and became a hell of a doctor.

(Disney/Ser Baffo)

But while he was great with patients and colleagues, he struggled to find his surgical niche. Then, a new pediatric surgeon arrived to tilt the scales.

Monica Beltran first appeared in Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 as the peds attending.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 7 Review: If You Leave
Image
I have to admit, Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 7 did not go the way I expected.

There was a shocking death, an emotional goodbye, and a heaping portion of callbacks to older Grey’s Anatomy storylines, and I wasn’t really prepared for any of it.

Granted, some of the episode’s reveals were predictable, but overall, the hour left me reeling.

(Disney/Tina Thorpe)

Knowing that Midori Francis is slated to leave the show and her character, Mika Yasuda, this season, I wasn’t shocked at all to see a near-death experience for the talented intern.

The part that shocked me was that she survived.

Tragically, her baby sister, Chloe (who was already fighting cancer) didn’t survive the car accident that nearly claimed Mika’s life.

But somehow, Mika pulled through after a tense hour of touch-and-go surgery and angst from her friends and sort-of-girlfriend.

Now, the question remains: how...

Why Sarah Drew's April Kepner Left Grey's Anatomy Season 14 (& Came Back In Season 17)
Image
April Kepner, a main character in Grey's Anatomy, left after season 14, but she returned at the end of season 17 as a special guest star. Grey's Anatomy is notorious for writing off characters. The show is unafraid to kill beloved fan-favorites; Grey's Anatomy even killed Lexie Grey and Mark Sloan within episodes of one another. If Grey's Anatomy decides to keep a character alive, the show often writes them off in divisive ways. For example, Alex Karev's Grey's Anatomy exit was highly controversial because it unraveled years of character development.

Callie Torres also moved across the country to New York after engaging in a ruthless custody battle with Arizona over their daughter, Sofia. And Izzie Stevens unexpectedly leaving in Grey's Anatomy season 6 is probably the show's most prominent example, with the lack of closure for Izzie leaving many viewers disappointed. There was another character exit that is not as controversial but still drew complaints,...

Eric Dane's 10 Best Movies And TV Shows
Image
The best Eric Dane movies and TV shows have mostly come on the small screen, with some major roles in significant television shows. While Dane was a high school athlete, he moved into acting after working in a school production of Arthur Miller's All My Sons. After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles and started taking on smaller roles in television shows. He finally got his first major role after appearing in The Wonder Years, Saved by the Bell, Roseanne, and Married... with Children.

This was in a medical drama called Gideon's Crossing. While that show didn't last over one season, it was a big reason he got cast as Dr. Sloan in Grey's Anatomy, which made him a star. That show brought him a lot of attention from critics and award ceremonies, and it helped him move on to other starring roles on television and a handful of movies along the way.

Every Grey's Anatomy Era, Explained
Image
Grey's Anatomy is currently airing its 21st season. While most television series tend to conclude before the 21st season, that's certainly not the case with the Ellen Pompeo-led series (though Pompeo's namesake character has stepped down from the show since Season 19). With more than two decades of run time, the series has gone through many different eras.

Roughly speaking, fans generally draw the first line at the point of Derek Shepherd's death. It marks the end of the original main storyline, which centers around Derek and Meredith Grey's relationship. Many would then draw a line at the end of Meredith's internship and another one after the plane crash. The different Grey's Anatomy eras have very distinctive tones.

Seasons 1 to 5 Are the Magic Era

Even after 21 seasons, the Magic Era, featuring the original five interns, is still many fans' favorite. It follows the young intern, Meredith Grey, as...

In Season 21, I Need Grey's Anatomy to Kill Off its Most Problematic Character
Image
This article briefly mentions potentially sensitive topics like mental health, pregnancy loss, and toxic masculinity.

Its no secret that Greys Anatomy has been one of the most beloved shows of the modern era. The series had humble beginnings, as Shonda Rhimes was inspired to create a medical drama after a female doctor mentioned how difficult it was to shave her legs in a hospital shower. The throwaway comment stuck with Rhimes, and she focused on how difficult the medical world is, using that and her experiences working as a candy striper for a local hospital to create her first TV masterpiece.

Now, almost 20 years later, Greys Anatomy beat out ER as the longest-running medical drama in primetime TV history. People generally love the show, but over the past few years, its clear that some longtime fans are starting to lose interest. Greys Anatomy first aired when I was around two years old,...

Leah Murphy was one of the new interns who came in after Magic sat the boards and moved on up the career ladder. She immediately proved to be a problematic, showing that she didn’t really belong there. She used her connections with Mark Sloan to get into the program.

Then she became clingy after sleeping with Arizona.

In Greys Anatomy, Alex Karev was one of the original five interns who survived in the Seattle Grace Hospital for more than 15 years. All 9 Grey's Anatomy Characters Who Have Been Chief Of Surgery
Image
Grey's Anatomy chiefs face more than just job responsibilities, dealing with tragedies and fallout. Richard Webber, Preston Burke, and Derek Shepherd each aspired to be Chief, facing their own challenges. Miranda Bailey, Alex Karev, and others took on the Chief role with varying successes and challenges.

Many Greys Anatomy doctors have been chief of surgery, and their legacies still live on. At the beginning of the series, Richard Webber was supposed to retire and appoint Preston Burke or Derek Shepherd as chief. Its a coveted position that not only Burke and Shepherd were fighting for, but Mark Sloan and Addison Montgomery also went after. However, over the course of the show, multiple doctors took on, and left, that coveted position.

While many doctors have fought for the chief of surgery position, the chief is faced with more than just the responsibilities of the job. In Greys Anatomy, many tragedies happen,...

I'm Glad Mark Sloan Won't Be Returning In Grey's Anatomy Season 21 After This Episode
Image
Mark Sloan's exit in season 9 gave his character closure and the perfect final episode in season 17. Eric Dane believes his character had the perfect run on Grey's Anatomy and won't be returning in season 21. Mark Sloan's relationship with Lexie on Meredith's beach in season 17 wrapped up his story effectively.

After one particular episode, I'm hardly disappointed that Mark Sloan won't be coming back to Grey's Anatomy. Mark Sloan, played by Eric Dane, was the Head of Plastic Surgery back when the Grey's Anatomy hospital was called the Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital. Mark, also known as McSteamy on the show, was recognized for his forward behavior and the romantic relationships he had with his colleagues. He was particularly involved in several on-and-off-again relationships which added interesting plot points to the medical drama.

Dane joined the Grey's Anatomy cast in season 2 and was a regular cast member until his...

Why Dr. Mark Sloan Star Has No Plans For Grey's Anatomy Season 21 Return In New Comments
Image
Eric Dane has no plans to reprise his role as Dr. Mark Sloan for Grey's Anatomy season 21. Dane believes he did exactly what he was supposed to on the show and has closure with his character. Sloan makes emotional appearances on the show, helping Meredith navigate life and death decisions.

Grey's Anatomy alum Eric Dane opens up about why he has no plans to reprise the role of Dr. Mark Sloan for season 21. Better known to some by the nickname of McSteamy, Dane's character was introduced all the way back in season 2 as the childhood friend of Patrick Dempsey's Derek Shepherd. He dies as the result of injuries sustained in the season 8 finale, closing out his involvement as a main character. But his presence lingers on the medical drama, with Seattle Grace getting renamed to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Eric Dane on Cal’s Future on ‘Euphoria,’ Missing His ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Abs and Kj Apa Wanting to Hit Him While Shooting ‘One Fast Move’
Image
Eric Dane is full of gratitude.

“I’ve been put through the wringer,” the actor tells me Tuesday morning over Zoom while promoting his new indie drama, “One Fast Move.” “But now I’m having fucking fun.”

For many years, Dane’s private life played out in the tabloids. He recently opened up on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast about his “Grey’s Anatomy” character Dr. Mark Sloan, a.k.a. McSteamy, being killed off the hit ABC show due, in part, to his real-life substance abuse problems.

But that was then.

Dane has been quite busy these last few years. In addition to “One Fast Move” – he plays a deadbeat dad and former motorcycle racing champion whose estranged son (Apa) comes back into his life – the actor appeared in this summer’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” opposite Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

Fire Country Season 3 Cast Is Adding New Ex-Con With Grey's Anatomy Alum
Image
Fire Country season 3 adds an ex-con character named Audrey, played by Grey's Anatomy alum Leven Rambin. Audrey is described as an empathetic person with a musical passion, as well as a former fire camp member. Audrey could be someone helping to defend the camp from getting shut down, a potential love interest for Bode, or even a character who ties into the upcoming Sheriff Country spinoff.

Fire Country season 3 has added a new ex-convict to its cast of characters, with a Grey's Anatomy alum portraying the newcomer to Edgewater. Fire Country season 2 ended with characters making plenty of big decisions, such as Bode deciding to let Gabriela and Diego go through with their wedding. Despite all the painful moments characters have gone through in recent episodes, season 3 is likely to continue bringing both good and bad changes to their lives and the town they live in.

Greys Anatomys McSteamy Shares Real Reason He Was Let Go From the Hit Series

Eric Dane revealed he was "let go" from Grey's Anatomy, not leaving voluntarily. His struggles with prescription drug addiction contributed to his exit. Dane reprised his role in Season 9 and Season 17, and has since taken on diverse roles in TV and film.

Almost a decade after his departure from the popular medical drama Greys Anatomy, actor Eric Dane opened up about the real reason for his exit from the show and revealed that he was actually let go rather than voluntarily choosing to leave the long-running ABC drama. In a recent appearance on Dax Shepards Armchair Expert, the star spoke honestly for the first time about his abrupt and unexplained departure from a show that made him a household name. He even talked at length about his sobriety prior to joining the team.

'You're Not Coming Back': Former Grey's Anatomy Actor Explains Series Exit
Image
Eric Dane is candidly discussing his exit from Greys Anatomy after six seasons as Dr. Mark Sloan, famously known as McSteamy. Dane joined the hit ABC series at the end of season two as a guest star, becoming a regular in season three due to positive audience reception.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, during a recent appearance on Dax Shepards Armchair Expert podcast, Dane disclosed that his departure from Greys Anatomy was not entirely his choice. He admitted he was battling addiction at the time, which did not directly cause his exit but certainly didn't help. As his time on the show increased, he became more expensive for the network. He noted that the network knew the show's success was not dependent on any one actor, as long as the main character, Grey, remained.

Eric Dane Says He “Understood” Why He Was “Let Go” From ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ After 6 Seasons

More than a decade later, Eric Dane is reflecting on the behind-the-scenes downfall of Dr. McSteamy.

The Grey’s Anatomy alum said he “didn’t leave so much as I was let go” from the long-running Shondaland series, on which he played Dr. Mark Sloan while “struggling” with addiction.

Although he was sober for around four years before joining the cast in 2006, Dane admitted on the Armchair Expert podcast that he was “fucked up longer than I was sober” during his time on the ABC medical drama, partially due to the pressures of mounting fame.

“They didn’t let me go because of that, although it definitely didn’t help,” he explained. “I was starting to become, as most of these actors who have spent significant time on a show, you start to become very expensive for the network. And the network knows that the show is going to do what...

Eric Dane is opening up about being written off Grey’s Anatomy after six seasons of playing Dr. Mark Sloan, aka McSteamy, on the hit ABC series. (Spoilers ahead!)

The actor’s role was introduced at the end of season two as a guest star. He became a regular character in season three after he received positive feedback for his initial appearance. Over the course of the following seasons, Sloan became a fan-favorite character, but after a plane crash in the season eight finale, it was revealed he would succumb to his injuries, dying at the beginning of season nine.

Dane returned to the show briefly in season 17 when Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) was in a Covid-induced coma and was visited on an imaginary beach by Sloan, sister Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh), husband Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), George O’Malley (T.R. Knight) and Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti).

Eric Dane Lands Role in Prime Video Series Countown While Awaiting Euphoria's Fate
Zendaya in Euphoria (2019)
With Euphoria Season 3 on a perma-hold, the regular cast members are making good use of their time away.

Today, Deadline exclusively reported that Eric Dane will star with Jensen Ackles and Jessica Camacho in the upcoming Prime Video series Countdown.

The series, a thriller, comes from former One Chicago showrunner Derek Haas.

Other Euphoria stars have been extraordinarily prolific in their downtime from Euphoria.

Zendaya, who plays Rue Bennett, has become one of the biggest stars in America thanks to her role on the show and how she uses her time away wisely.

She’s starred in the Dune series and was recently seen in Challengers, which scored at the box office and in fans’ hearts.

Eric Dane Joins ‘Countdown’ Amazon Series As ‘Euphoria’ Remains On Hold
Image
Exclusive: Eric Dane (Euphoria) has been tapped to star opposite Jensen Ackles and Jessica Camacho in Countdown, Prime Video’s thriller drama series from One Chicago veteran Derek Haas.

His casting shouldn’t be alarming news for Euphoria fans. According to sources, there have been some promising signs as work on Season 3 scripts continues with creator Sam Levinson. Amid a production delay, HBO in March allowed the cast to take other acting jobs.

Should the network proceed with a third season — which I hear is still targeting a start of production later this year for a 2025 debut — filming will have to be done around the schedule of cast members like Dane who have booked new gigs. That is considered challenging but doable. Since March, Dane also signed up for pan-European miniseries Kabul, which is currently in production.

Countdown starts following a suspicious murder in broad daylight, which leads to LAPD...

Grey’s Anatomy: The 10 Worst Character Exits
Image
Grey’s Anatomy has broken many hearts over its 20 seasons (and counting), but it’s also angered fans with how certain characters were written off. Realistically, no one wants to see their favorite character leave a show, but if it’s handled the right way, a good departure allows the legacy of the character to remain untouched.

While there are many factors that go into planning and handling a character’s exit, the final product can be hit or miss. Here are what we consider to be the worst and most unnecessary exits from TV’s longest-running primetime medical drama.

10. April Kepner

While April’s (Sarah Drew) departure in season 14 could be considered a “happy ending” for the character, it was deeply unsatisfying for viewers. She had apparently been dating Matthew (Justin Bruening), who she left at the altar, for months and didn’t tell anyone. That itself is surprising but...
