‘Squid Game’ Composer Jung Jaeil “Poured His Heart And Soul” Into Score For Final Season – Sound & Screen TV
Image
Composer Jung Jaeil needed a translator for his session of Sound & Screen Television but he knew exactly what to say in English when he was asked for teasers about the third and final season of Squid Game.

“I’m not allowed,” he declared.

But Jung did admit he “poured my heart and soul into the score for Season 3” to help realize the vision of director Hwang Dong-hyuk. In fact, it was his respect for Hwang’s work on the Korean series The Fortress that first persuaded him to create the music for the hit Netflix show.

Jung Jae Il at Deadline’s Sound & Screen Television

Jung spoke on the Sound & Screen panel about having to balance elements like blood and massacre with a little bit of humor.

“Season 2 has a lot more character than Season 1,” he said through his translator. One of his favorite parts was creating the music for...

After a failed box-office run, can Bong Joon Ho’s ‘Mickey 17’ rebound at the Oscars next year?
Image
Will the realities of capitalism sink the awards hopes for Mickey 17, a movie that’s a forceful critique of the realities of capitalism? Released on March 7, the Bong Joon Ho science-fiction farce has earned just $40 million in North America and $110 million worldwide, which, according to Variety, may result in a loss of up to $80 million for Warner Bros., the film’s distributor. (There is some dispute about that figure’s veracity; the film cost a reported $118 million before marketing.) Still, despite the negative headlines about its box office and a middling response from general audiences — ticket buyers rated Mickey 17 with a B grade on CinemaScore, which, counterintuitively, is poor for a project at this scale — there is still some hope Mickey 17 might rebound with Oscar voters next year.

The case for Mickey 17

After winning three Oscars for Parasite, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay,...

Berlinale 2025: ‘Mickey 17’ Review
Image
Stars: Robert Pattinson, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Holliday Grainger | Written and Directed by Bong Joon Ho

Writer-director Bong Joon Ho (Snowpiercer) returns to futuristic sci-fi for this space exploration thriller based on the 2022 novel by Edward Ashton (entitled Mickey7). As such, it’s not without its flaws, but it’s still a lot of fun, thanks to its gleefully bonkers premise and pair of committed central performances from Robert Pattinson.

Set in the distant future, the film centres on Mickey Barnes (Pattinson), a spaceship worker who has been designated an “expendable”, so-called because his body can be re-printed and his memories restored if he dies, which he does, a lot. While on a mission to colonise a remote ice planet, Mickey’s 17th iteration (known as Mickey 17) falls down a crevasse and is presumed dead, so when he miraculously survives and returns to base camp, he...

Mickey 17 New Trailer Sees The Batman Star Robert Pattinson Come To Terms With Being An "Expendable"
Image
Warner Bros. Pictures has just shared a new trailer (via SFFGazette.com) for Mickey 17, the next groundbreaking cinematic experience from the Academy Award-winning writer/director of Parasite, Bong Joon Ho.

In the movie, the unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job...to die, for a living.

This sneak peek offers a better idea of what to expect from Mickey 17 after it was pushed from its previous 2024 release. The movie looks thought-provoking and bonkers in equal measure, and Pattinson looks like he's having a blast as this "Expendable."

Talking to Elle earlier this week, the actor confirmed rumours that he initially based Mickey's voice on Jackass icon Steve-o:

"I used to love, and I still do love, Jackass. I remember listening to an interview with Steve-o years ago and he...

‘Mickey 17’ Trailer: Robert Pattinson Keeps Getting Killed in Bong Joon Ho’s Follow-Up to ‘Parasite’
Image
Robert Pattinson hates dying, especially after kicking the bucket 17-plus times for Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi-novel adaptation “Mickey 17.”

The feature, which marks writer/director Bong’s long-awaited follow-up to his Best Picture-winning “Parasite,” centers on Pattinson’s title character Mickey, who is a disposable employee called an Expendable. Mickey is sent on a human expedition sent to colonize ice world Niflheim; any mission that is considered too dangerous for humans is a task for Mickey. And of course, there are more than a few Mickey-related fatalities.

Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and “Blink Twice” breakout Naomi Ackie also star.

Bong adapted Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey 7” but added more deaths for the lead character. The film project was first announced in January 2022, which came before the novel’s release in February via Macmillan imprint St. Martin. The film was originally set for a March 29, 2024 release before being...

Ranking the ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ Games
Image
We shouldn’t be allowed to call “Squid Game” dystopian now that Netflix has built the torment nexus, but the sheer scale of the streamer’s new reality series, “Squid Game: The Challenge,” is impressive. Big reality elimination challenge shows like “Survivor,” “Big Brother,” and “The Amazing Race” feature contestants in the double, not triple, digits. While “Squid Game: The Challenge” settles on squibs instead of actual bullets, the logistical hurdles involved in blowing up narrative sequences and making them practical as games — for hundreds of players — are legion.

Filmed over 16 days at a series of six interconnected studios in London, “Squid Game: The Challenge” features representations of the unnervingly cheerful “Squid Game” work of production designer Chae Kyoung-sun and the iconic costumes created by designer Jo Sang-gyeong, as well as inclusion of composer Jung Jae-il’s score and a penchant for recreating the deliciously painful slo-mo editing of games perfected by editor Nam Na-young.

Cue up your "Return of the King" title card memes, because Bong Joon-ho will be returning to our screens in 2024. Out of nowhere, Warner Bros. released the first look at the sci-fi drama "Mickey 17" to their social media channels, and admittedly, there's not a lot of footage to parse through and analyze. However, what we do see is a shirtless Robert Pattinson lying on some kind of futuristic medical table, as well as a tag that Warner Bros. will release the film on March 29, 2024.

According to a press release from Warner Bros., "Mickey 17" is currently in production and will be an exclusive theatrical release. While we're still not entirely sure what it will be about just yet, we do know that it was adapted from the Edward Ashton novel, "Mickey7," so there are a few details we can gather about what could be in store for us. Bong Joon Ho’s ‘Mickey 17’ Sets 2024 Release Date
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Bong Joon Ho has set a date to return to theaters. The Academy Award-winning director behind Parasite will open Mickey 17 around the globe on March 29, 2024, Warner Bros. announced Monday.

Mickey 17 stars Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo, with Bong penning the script based on the book Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton.

The book, published earlier this year, centers on a man known as an expendable on a mission to colonize a distant planet. Each colony features one crew member who takes on the most dangerous jobs on the mission — jobs that will assuredly lead to their deaths. However, their memories are backed up and they are restored to cloned bodies when they die. In the novel, Mickey 7 — the 7th version of this crewmember — is left for dead on a mission, but survives. When he returns to base, he discovers...

Bong Joon Ho’s New Movie ‘Mickey 17’ Gets Release Date, First Look
Image
Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 will hit theaters around the globe on March 29, 2024, Warner Bros said Monday. The studio already had the date staked out for an event film. Also opening that weekend is Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and an untitled event film from Universal.

The pic from the Parasite Oscar winner is currently shooting off a script he wrote based on the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton. The filmmaker is also producing.

Robert Pattinson stars in the title role alongside Oscar nominee Steven Yeun (Minari), Naomi Ackie (I Wanna Dance with Somebody), with Oscar nominee Toni Collette (Hereditary) and Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo (the Avengers films).

The film is produced by Plan B Entertainment, Dooho Choi of Kate Street Picture Company, and Bong under his Offscreen, Inc. banner. The behind-the-camera creative team includes Oscar-nominated director of photography Darius Khondji, Oscar-nominated production designer Fiona Crombie, Oscar-nominated editor Jinmo Yang (Parasite), costume designer Catherine George and visual effects supervisor Dan Glass (The Matrix franchise). The music is by composer Jae-il Jung.

Parasite fired off like a rocket out of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, taking the Palme d’Or and going on to win Best Picture at the Oscars, one of its four trophies there along with Best Director, Screenplay and International Feature. The pic was a revolution for a Korean title on the festival and awards circuit.

Mickey 7 was published in February by St. Martin, a Macmillan imprint. While the film will be inspired by the novel, sources say that given Bong’s past experiences with adaptations, his version might ultimately may be different from the novel’s. The novel’s story follows Mickey7, who is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.

Here’s a first look of Pattinson’s character in some sci-fi sedation state:...

Emmy-Nominated Main Title Composers Battle the Skip Intro Button
Image
According to Netflix, the Skip Intro button is pressed 136 million times in a typical day. Moreover, the feature has been adopted by streamers industry-wide. So what does it mean for a potentially iconic title theme? While approaches vary, the composers nominated for outstanding original main title theme music at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards are united in confronting the slight with good humor and unbridled creativity.

“It makes people want to up their game and to do something so catchy that people want to hear it,” says Natalie Holt, nominated for Disney+’s “Loki.” She compares it to writing a pop song: “Things that don’t get stuck in your head go in the bin.”

Siddhartha Khosla, a nominee for Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” also uses a songwriting metaphor, calling his theme “the biggest, hookiest part of the chorus.”

‘Squid Game’ composer Jung Jae-il on what made him ‘implement children’s music’ into main title theme [Watch]
Image
This year, Netflix’s “Squid Game” received 14 Primetime Emmy nominations that were fairly well spread out between the cast, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk’s writing and direction, and for many of his creative below-the-line collaborators. One of the people nominated for an Emmy was composer Jung Jae-il for his haunting main title theme music for the Korean survival series. Netflix has shared with Gold Derby an exclusive behind-the-scenes video that delves further into the writing of that distinctive record and toy drum theme, and how that managed to set up the tone for the entire series (watch above).

"Squid Game" Continues Its Reign by Securing 14 Emmy Nominations
Image
The 2022 Emmy nominations were unveiled on July 12, and Netflix's "Squid Game" absolutely swept, earning 14 nods and making history as the first non-English-language show to be nominated for outstanding drama series. The show, which remains Netflix's most-watched original series of all time, follows a group of 456 contestants participating in a series of children's games to win a cash prize - but the kicker is that if they lose, they die.

Written by Hwang Dong-hyuk, who was nominated for outstanding writing for the finale and outstanding directing for the pilot, the show stars Lee Jung-jae, who also received a nomination for lead actor in a drama series. His costars Park Hae-soo and HoYeon Jung were nominated for outstanding supporting actor and outstanding supporting actress in a drama series, respectively. Click here to read the full article.

Two years ago, Netflix broke ground for the Emmys with eight nominations for Unorthodox, its German-American limited series that was told in English, Yiddish and German.

Now in 2022, another of the streamer’s programs have helped the Television Academy truly go global. Squid Game is the first series solely produced outside of a Western country and completely not in English to score major-category nominations at the Emmys, with 14, including best drama series. The Korean thriller from Siren Pictures is Netflix’s most-nominated series this year, leading Ozark and Stranger Things (13 each) and Inventing Anna (three).

Including the expected nominations for SAG winners Lee Jung-jae (lead actor) and Jung Ho-yeon (supporting actress), five total members of the cast received nods. Park Hae-soo (who played the disgraced financier Sang-woo) and Oh Young-soo (the mysterious elderly Il-nam) will go head-to-head in the supporting actor category, while...

Squid Game: The Game Changer – The final chapter of the worldwide phenomenon, featuring writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk and the incredible cast and crew

To anyone who has watched Season 1 of Netflix’s “Squid Game” from the very beginning, it may have been obvious what the final game in the deadly competition would be, because it’s right there in the name of the show.

The title game that the finalists play against each other may be unfamiliar to Western audiences, but Squid Game is a playground game that involves a squid-shaped design drawn using chalk that the players have to navigate using whatever methods necessary. It can get quite violent.

In our final Making of “Squid Game” video supplied by Netflix, we get a look at that final game in the series, and in case it isn’t obvious, there’s a pretty major spoiler for how the game turns out if you haven’t gotten to the last couple episodes yet.

Squid Game: The Glass Bridge – Creating realistic fear and spectacle through exceptional craftsmanship in the fifth game
Image
Anyone who thought the “Tug of War” from Episode 3 of “Squid Game” would be the most challenging or deadliest of the games in Netflix’s Korean thriller series, may not have been prepared for “The Glass Bridge” in Episode 5. Gold Derby’s fifth exclusive “Making Of” video shows how this episode was created with thoughts from a few of the creatives and actors.

In this game, the remaining players have to walk across a pathway of “glass stepping stones” stretching high across the ground, carefully choosing between two options. One glass panel is strong enough to hold the weight of a human, the other panel cannot. As the contestants choose, they either move forward safely or go crashing through the glass down to the floor below.

Squid Game: Marbles – Heartbreaking humanity is revealed in the fourth game, featuring Anupam Tripathi and production designer Chae Kyoung-sun
Image
At first, the game of “Marbles” from Episode 4 of Netflix’s Korean drama “Squid Game” might seem like a slight comedown after some of the more elaborate previous games. And yet, a relatively simple game of marbles leads to one of the show’s most devastating episodes, because each player picks their partner for the game, unaware they’ll have to compete against that person. The loser in this game of marbles dies.

In the latest “Making of” exclusive video provided by Netflix (watch above), Park Hae-soo, who portrays Cho Sang-woo, talks about how “Marbles” became the most memorable game for him, partially due to the way the set recreates the Korean village backstreets and alleys the actor remembered from growing up. “I felt a strange mix of emotions, nostalgia, and tension,” he says about filming Episode 4.

“The marble game was to reveal your most trusted and beloved friend, whom you must kill,...

Squid Game: Tug of War – The emotional push and pull of the landmark series, featuring Park Hae-soo and composer Jung Jae-il [Watch]
Image
Gold Derby’s third Making of “Squid Game” featurette involves the deadly game of Tug of War that creates an incredible climax for the third episode of Netflix’s Korean survival series (watch the exclusive video above). The game forces the contestants to form groups to play Tug of War high above a steep drop. That episode builds up to a shocking (and almost literal) cliffhanger ending, which helped viewers understand that no one competing in the game is safe.

Executive producer, writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk states, “I thought it would be a little boring if all the games took place on the ground, and there’s that intimidating feeling about heights.” The Tug of War game also allowed Director Hwang and his cast to explore the dynamics between the players “as they form teams and allies.”

Production designer Chae Kyoung-sun talks about building that set (accompanied by a...

Jung Jae-il (‘Squid Game’ composer) on the critical ‘role that music should play in a scene’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“That is the role that music should play in a scene,” declares acclaimed Korean composer Jung Jae-il (“Parasite”) about the role of a composer on a series like the Netflix blockbuster “Squid Game,” on which he juxtaposes the mood of each scene with a variety of musical styles, from bombastic percussion, to distorted synth-rock, to mellifluous orchestral pieces. For our recent webchat, he adds that “the music should not be in the foreground of the scene, but at the same time, music can show something completely different to the scene.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“Squid Game” was conceived by acclaimed feature writer/director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who not only created and produced “Squid Game” but also wrote and directed all nine episodes. The series stars leading man Lee Jung-jae as central hero Gi-hun, Jung Ho-yeon as the mysterious North Korean refugee Sae-byeok, Park Hae-soo as the calculating Sang-woo, Wi Ha-jun as undercover cop Jun-ho,...

‘Squid Game’ Could Make Emmy History for Netflix — Will Crafts Be Part of the Story?
Image
“Squid Game” was a massive global phenomenon in 2021: The Korean-language survival drama is Netflix’s most-watched series ever, reaching more than 140 million households and notching 1.2 billion viewing hours in its first month on the streamer. The violent satire of capitalistic greed and economic inequality is built around a survival game show run by wealthy elites, pitting desperate contestants against each other in a lethal fight for a jackpot worth 38 million. Each episodic contest is wrapped around a kid’s game or other forms of nostalgia: red light, green light; Dalgona, a popular Korean street snack from the ’80s; tug-of-war; and marbles.

The show definitely struck a nerve during the pandemic, resulting in a slew of “Squid Game” Halloween costumes and cosplay pieces; a “Saturday Night Live” musical parody starring Rami Malek and Pete Davidson; and YouTuber MrBeast’s “456,000 Squid Game In Real Life!” video. Meanwhile, director Hwang Dong-hyuk and...

Parasite
Hipster film folk love a good black comedy, and one that doesn’t hit too close to home can become a big hit. Bong Joon-ho has been making smart, clever movies for years, and this intense satire hit pay dirt, commercially. Neon played their Oscar season cards beautifully as well, with the personable director seemingly omnipresent at festivals and on NPR. The film itself? I find it wickedly clever, yet fundamentally humanist — it’s not mean-spirited.

The awards are a new platform for films made outside of the United States, through which we hope to expand the global reach of international cinema. There are extraordinary films being made all over the world and we want to bring the...
