Tom Cruise seals a groundbreaking $200 million space film deal via Zoom without a script (Photo Credit – Amazon Prime Video)
In a move that’d make even the most daring astronauts envious, Tom Cruise managed to score a $200M deal for a film to be shot in space—all without a script! While most filmmakers would sweat over pages and pages of dialogue, Cruise dazzled Universal Pictures during a Zoom call.
Deadline reported that the virtual pitch included Cruise, director Doug Liman, writer Christopher McQuarrie, and producer Pj van Sandwijk. It was like a Hollywood dream team on a mission (pun intended). They whipped up a whirlwind of enthusiasm and sealed the deal, making history with the first-ever narrative film to be shot in outer space. Who knew a casual Zoom could result in such an astronomical commitment?
Elon Musk’s SpaceX is joining the adventure, ensuring the project has the rocket science seal of approval.

Tom Rothman, the Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman and CEO, wined and dined a select few at a splendidly swish soirée Friday at Mamo Michelangelo in Antibes, hosted by Charles Finch as part of his annual Filmmakers Dinner honoring 100 years of Columbia Pictures, and there was something he said about why movies matter that has stuck with me.
Hours earlier, Rothman had introduced a gloriously restored print of Charles Vidor’s 1946 movie Gilda, starring Rita Hayworth as the eponymous nightclub temptress and Glenn Ford as the hardboiled gambler from her past.
They hate each other, but as we all know, that’s often a prelude on the road to love both in real and reel life.

Vidor also uses the vocabulary of dance to signal Gilda’s emotional temperature.

The recently released Bob Marley: One Love is another entry in the popular biopic genre, and it's too soon to tell if the film will be remembered or overlooked by audiences. Biopic films often get a mixed reaction, as several have earned acclaim and awards while others have faded from people's minds. It can be difficult to have a compelling biopic as audiences are sometimes left wondering how accurate the film truly is. Then, there are the films that are brilliant with their detailing of historical events but end up feeling underappreciated among viewers.
Whether because they had weaker box office numbers or were upstaged by other award-worthy films, these biopics didn't get the love and appreciation they deserved. Nevertheless, viewers looking for a new and fascinating biopic have these underrated films to choose from, including Steve Jobs, Air, and Rocketman.

The 2024 Oscars Best Picture race is highly competitive with a diverse range of movies vying for nominations. Front-runners for Best Picture include Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" and Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon." New contenders that have emerged for Best Picture nominations include "American Fiction," "Origin," and "May December."
The Oscars 2024 race is heating up, as a growing list of movies hope to compete for a coveted Best Picture nomination with hopes of winning the Academy Awards' top prize. Hollywood's biggest awards ceremony has undergone significant changes in recent years that have brought in an expanded and more diverse voting body. The effects of this have been seen across the board, but the Best Picture nominees have become more varied in genre and style than before. This has also been aided by the decision to expand the category to always nominate 10 movies, which is perfect for a year like 2024 with several strong contenders.

It’s no secret that it’s taken decades of twists and turns in Hollywood to get Michael Mann’s anticipated “Ferrari,” which makes its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival Aug. 31, to the big screen.
But what’s less known is that the journey of this drama about Italian sports car builder and racing pioneer Enzo Ferrari originated with Italy’s storied Cecchi Gori Group before the company went bust.
In 1991, Los Angeles-based Penta Pictures — which had been jointly founded by producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori and then-rising TV mogul Silvio Berlusconi — bought adaptation rights to the book “Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races” by Brock Yates that is the basis for Mann’s picture.
Cecchi Gori subsequently hired Troy Kennedy Martin to write the script and when Penta Pictures was dissolved in 1995 the “Ferrari” rights went to its U.S. arm, Cecchi Gori Pictures.

SAG-AFTRA on Thursday named Neon’s Michael Mann-directed Ferrari as one of its latest recipients of an interim agreement for publicity.
The waiver allows the movie’s cast, which includes Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz, to publicize the feature at its Venice Film Festival world premiere, closing night at the New York Film Festival and other events at which the pic may screen.
Similar to indie studio A24, Neon is a non-amptp company and has encountered no hurdles in nabbing SAG-AFTRA interim agreements.
There are several applications of SAG-AFTRA interim agreements for indie features, addressing everything from casting to production and promotion.
Ferrari is not the first major title to benefit in the latter area, joining a list that includes Luc Besson’s DogMan and Lily Gladstone-led The Unknown Country. But it’s certainly the starriest with the option to promote at the moment, boasting an ensemble cast that also includes Shailene Woodley,...

The screening of the Neon film starring Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz will take place on Oct. 13 at Alice Tully Hall.
The Enzo Ferrari biopic stars Driver as the racecar manufacturer and entrepreneur as he deals with professional and personal struggles in 1957. His marriage to wife Laura (Cruz) is struggling amid his philandering and the tragic recent death of their young son. Meanwhile, Driver’s Ferrari faces pressure to increase production as he prepares for the dangerous Mille Miglia race.
“Dovetailing these narrative strands, Mann effortlessly shifts gears between elegiac and spectacular, climaxing in an exhilarating and terrifying race across the Northern Italian landscape — a visual and aural wonder of revving machinery against bucolic splendor — that ranks with the greatest set pieces of the director’s career,...

In late 2018 — not long after John Volanthen and I helped free the 12 boys of the Wild Boars soccer team and their coach, Ekkaphon Chanthawong, from the flooded caves in the Tham Luang cave system in July of that year — producers P.J. van Sandwijk and Gabrielle Tana approached me about making a film about the rescue mission. There was a great rush by Hollywood for the rights to the young soccer players, their coach and the divers involved in the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in Thailand. Ron Howard’s feature take, Thirteen Lives, made it to the finish line first at MGM, and the 2x Oscar winning filmmaker tells us how that came to be on today’s Crew Call.
It helped that the pic’s producer P.J. van Sandwijk was also behind the documentary about the same subject, The Rescue, made by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi. Howard was struck by the script by 2x Oscar nominee William Nicholson which provided surprising twists and turns not known by many.

The demise of STX as a distributor continues to pose questions for the future of high-profile movies on their slate, including Guy Ritchie’s action film Operation Fortune, Michael Mann’s big-budget biopic Ferrari, and Daisy Ridley thriller The Marsh King’s Daughter.
For months we’ve heard about a deal being in the works between the Bad Moms and Hustlers outfit and Lionsgate, which would see the latter taking on some, if not all, of STX’s movies for distribution.
That remains the direction of travel and multiple STX executives have moved over to Lionsgate, including former STX chairman Adam Fogelson who is now Vice Chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.
We understand more will follow in coming weeks, leaving few staff left in STX’s domestic marketing and distribution team.
If Lionsgate is to take on a bunch more movies it stands to reason that it should bulk up its staff.

Penélope Cruz and Adam Driver, who are both expected to be attending the upcoming Venice Film Festival, are already in Italy shooting Micheal Mann’s long-gestating “Ferrari” drama, in which Cruz appears as the wife of auto racing impresario Enzo Ferrari, played by Driver.
First images are surfacing of Cruz (see above photo) as Ferrari’s wife Laura after cameras started rolling Aug. 1 in central Italy.
The big-budget biopic kicked off physical production in the town of Maranello, known worldwide as the home of Ferrari and the iconic car’s Formula One racing team. It follows the former racecar driver and auto manufacturing giant in the summer of 1957. With his marriage to his wife Laura (Cruz) in crisis over the mourning of a son, and the threat of bankruptcy looming over the company he and his wife built 10 years earlier, Ferrari embarks on a bold race — the Mille Miglia, 1,000 miles across Italy.

Prime Video has released the first trailer for the ripped-from-the-headlines drama “Thirteen Lives,” Ron Howard’s upcoming film about the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue.
In June and July 2018, the members of a junior football team were trapped for 18 days in Thailand’s Tham Luang Nang Non cave, after heavy rainfall flooded the cave system and blocked their way out. As the team – who ranged in age from 11-16 years old – and their coach remained trapped for weeks, the situation attracted global interest and an international rescue team was assembled to locate them. Howard’s film will chronicle the events of the rescue, focusing on the efforts of the divers to save the trapped team members.
Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell lead the ensemble cast as Rick Stanton and John Volanthen, the British cave divers who volunteered their expertise to help find the group alongside anesthetist Harry Harris (Joel Edgerton) and...
