Olmo Schnabel’s directorial debut premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, and has a star-studded cast to boot. Schnabel, the son of artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel, co-wrote the film with lead star Jack Irv and Galen Core.

A Venice Film Festival premiere that just lit up SXSW, the provocative coming-of-age film stars stars Jack Irv, Dario Yazbek Bernal, Willem Dafoe, Peter Sarsgaard and Emmanuelle Seigner. Martin Scorsese, Jeremy O. Harris and Michel Franco (“New Order”) all serve as executive producers.

Bernal (Netflix’s “House of Flowers”) stars as Alejandro, the son of a Mexican crime lord on the run from his past in New York City. There he meets Jack (Irv), a 20-something living with his wealthy parents Francis (Dafoe) and Diana (Seigner) while working in a pet shop. In a haze of drugs and sex, Alejandro seduces Jack and drags him into the city’s criminal underbelly.

Shot on 35mm film by Hunter Zimny, the film generated buzz out of Venice for its daring lead performances.

Venice Film Festival hosted the world premiere of Ferrari, the latest film from director Michael Mann which boasts a star-studded cast ensemble of Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Sarah Gadon, Gabriel Leone, Jack O’Connell and Patrick Dempsey.

SAG-AFTRA designated the film as a recipient of an interim agreement for publicity, granting the cast permission to participate in the premiere and promote the feature. It’s no secret that it’s taken decades of twists and turns in Hollywood to get Michael Mann’s anticipated “Ferrari,” which makes its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival Aug. 31, to the big screen.

But what’s less known is that the journey of this drama about Italian sports car builder and racing pioneer Enzo Ferrari originated with Italy’s storied Cecchi Gori Group before the company went bust.

In 1991, Los Angeles-based Penta Pictures — which had been jointly founded by producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori and then-rising TV mogul Silvio Berlusconi — bought adaptation rights to the book “Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races” by Brock Yates that is the basis for Mann’s picture.

Cecchi Gori subsequently hired Troy Kennedy Martin to write the script and when Penta Pictures was dissolved in 1995 the “Ferrari” rights went to its U.S. arm, Cecchi Gori Pictures.

In the nearly one-and-a-half-minute sneak peek, which arrived just a day before the film is set to make its debut at the Venice Film Festival, Enzo Ferrari, played by Driver, is seen watching a driver test drive one of his vehicles. It also features his relationship with his wife Laura, played by Cruz, and his family life which is intercut with scenes showing cars racing across the Italian countryside into Rome. Enzo is seen crying at his son Alfredo's grave; while other moments capture a tumultuous marriage between Enzo and Laura. The Ferrari family feature starring Driver as Enzo Ferrari and Penelope Cruz as his wife, Laura Ferrari, will debut at 2023 Venice Film Festival, followed by a North American premiere at NYFF.

SAG-AFTRA on Thursday named Neon’s Michael Mann-directed Ferrari as one of its latest recipients of an interim agreement for publicity.

The waiver allows the movie’s cast, which includes Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz, to publicize the feature at its Venice Film Festival world premiere, closing night at the New York Film Festival and other events at which the pic may screen.

Similar to indie studio A24, Neon is a non-amptp company and has encountered no hurdles in nabbing SAG-AFTRA interim agreements.

There are several applications of SAG-AFTRA interim agreements for indie features, addressing everything from casting to production and promotion.

Michael Mann’s long-gestating passion project “Ferrari” has finally found a distributor.

Neon has acquired distribution rights to the racing biopic, which stars Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari and Penelope Cruz as his wife, Laura Ferrari. The film will be distributed internationally by STX Entertainment. No release date has been announced, but the film is heavily rumored to premiere at the Venice International Film Festival before mounting a fall awards campaign.

“Michael Mann, one of the most innovative and influential filmmakers in American cinema, was moved by the power of this intensely dramatic story to persist for years to bring it to the big screen,” Neon CEO Tom Quinn said in a statement. “‘Ferrari’ reaffirms Neon’s continued commitment to supporting visionary auteurs who push the boundaries of cinema. Filmmaker Olmo Schnabel has assembled a cast of heavyweights for his directorial debut – a romantic thriller about two young men exploring the underbelly of New York and one other.

“Pet Shop Boys” will mark the first time behind the camera for Schnabel, son of Oscar-nommed director Julian Schnabel. Already wrapped, the project is led by newcomers Dario Yazebek Bernal (“The House of the Flowers”) and Jack Irv (“Giants Being Lonely”).

The film follows the impulsive black sheep Alejandro (Bernal) and college-age pet store employee Jack (Irv) who engage in a whirlwind affair that sends them down a rabbit hole of vice.

In late 2018 — not long after John Volanthen and I helped free the 12 boys of the Wild Boars soccer team and their coach, Ekkaphon Chanthawong, from the flooded caves in the Tham Luang cave system in July of that year — producers P.J. van Sandwijk and Gabrielle Tana approached me about making a film about the rescue mission. At the time, we had no idea who the director would be or what the screenplay would look like, but we began to talk to a script researcher for what would eventually become Thirteen Lives.

Once screenwriter William Nicholson was on board, director Ron Howard got involved and MGM decided to fund it. My diving partner and I had a Zoom call with Ron in which he shared his vision of what he wanted, and it was in September that Ron telephoned to say he’d gotten...

There was a great rush by Hollywood for the rights to the young soccer players, their coach and the divers involved in the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in Thailand. Ron Howard’s feature take, Thirteen Lives, made it to the finish line first at MGM, and the 2x Oscar winning filmmaker tells us how that came to be on today’s Crew Call.

It helped that the pic’s producer P.J. van Sandwijk was also behind the documentary about the same subject, The Rescue, made by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi. Howard was struck by the script by 2x Oscar nominee William Nicholson which provided surprising twists and turns not known by many.

The demise of STX as a distributor continues to pose questions for the future of high-profile movies on their slate, including Guy Ritchie’s action film Operation Fortune, Michael Mann’s big-budget biopic Ferrari, and Daisy Ridley thriller The Marsh King’s Daughter.

For months we’ve heard about a deal being in the works between the Bad Moms and Hustlers outfit and Lionsgate, which would see the latter taking on some, if not all, of STX’s movies for distribution.

That remains the direction of travel and multiple STX executives have moved over to Lionsgate, including former STX chairman Adam Fogelson who is now Vice Chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

We understand more will follow in coming weeks, leaving few staff left in STX’s domestic marketing and distribution team.

If Lionsgate is to take on a bunch more movies it stands to reason that it should bulk up its staff.

Driver, on set in Modena, Italy, for the biopic shoot, appears as the sunglass-wearing founder of the Ferrari race car team and also in preparation for the infamous Mille Miglia race. Set in 1957, Ferrari sees the race car maker facing bankruptcy and a tempestuous marriage with his wife, Laura, who is played by Penélope Cruz.

Amid that crisis, Ferrari and his team of drivers roll the dice on one race — 1,000 miles across Italy, in the Mille Miglia. Woodley takes on the role of Lina Lardi, Enzo’s mistress; Patrick Dempsey is race car driver Piero Taruffi; Jack O’Connell is fellow driver Peter Collins; Sarah Gadon plays Linda Christian; and Gabriel Leone is the charismatic Fon de Portago.

On Friday, the first official photo of Driver in the role of Enzo Ferrari in the upcoming biopic “Ferrari,” was been released. Driver is barely recognizable as the father of luxury and racing cars with gray hair, stylish sunglasses, and a luxurious suit.

Adam Driver is going Italian again. He will play racecar driver Enzo Ferrari in director Michael Mann’s upcoming drama “Ferrari,” and the first look at his transformative role has been officially released.

The movie takes place in 1957, when Ferrari enters the 1,000-mile Mille Miglia race. Born in 1898, Ferrari will be around 59 years old in the film, putting him a couple decades older than Driver, who is currently 38.

Principal photography has begun in Italy Wednesday on Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,” a biopic on the Italian car maker starring Adam Driver, and the film is now eyeing a release date for the fall of 2023.

Mann’s “Ferrari” is being made by STXfilms, which hopes to release the movie theatrically followed by a streaming release through its partner Showtime. No official release date was set.

Penélope Cruz and Adam Driver, who are both expected to be attending the upcoming Venice Film Festival, are already in Italy shooting Micheal Mann’s long-gestating “Ferrari” drama, in which Cruz appears as the wife of auto racing impresario Enzo Ferrari, played by Driver.

The big-budget biopic kicked off physical production in the town of Maranello, known worldwide as the home of Ferrari and the iconic car’s Formula One racing team. With his marriage to his wife Laura (Cruz) in crisis over the mourning of a son, and the threat of bankruptcy looming over the company he and his wife built 10 years earlier, Ferrari embarks on a bold race — the Mille Miglia, 1,000 miles across Italy.
