Patriots Day recreates the true story behind the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings and the subsequent terrorist manhunt that ensued. Directed by Peter Berg and starring his frequent collaborator Mark Wahlberg, the 2016 action drama relies on a fact-based approach to honor the lives that were lost and the real-life heroes who helped nab the criminals, ranging from Boston Police officials to local civilians. Some of the best Peter Berg movies, like Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon, dramatize real-life stories. In Patriots Day, Berg again relied on actual sources, like Watertown Sgt. Jeff Pugliese (played by J.K. Simmons), Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman), and Dun Meng (Jimmy O Yang).

It seems that almost every day there is an event covered through that brings back the memories from the Boston Marathon Bombings. When the announcement came that Peter Berg was making a movie about the events on what happened in 2013 some people had reservations because they felt it was too soon for the people that went through the horror. Then Mark Wahlberg came on board and it seemed that if anyone was going to star in a movie about this event it had to be somebody from Boston that understood the complexity of making this movie. It would be the third time Mark Wahlberg would team up with director Peter Berg with the first two movies being Lone Survivor and Deep Water Horizon. This movie would be different though for Mark because this would be about the city he grew up in and the people that adore him.

Dun Meng’s life changed in a flash in April of 2013, when the Northeastern University graduate student was hijacked by Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the brothers and Boston Marathon bombers.

Fearing for his life, Meng sat in the driver’s seat of his black Mercedes SUV and followed orders while elder brother Tamerlan held a handgun. Later ordered to move to the passenger seat, he waited for the opportunity to escape, and took off on foot until he reached the neighboring gas station.

“I never had any experience like that before,” Meng, now 30, tells People.
