Netflix’s ‘This World Can’t Tear Me Down’ Is a Hyper Animated Roadmap Through Friendship and Fascism
“This World Can’t Tear Me Down” faces the kind of uphill battle of most semi-autobiographical stories: the challenge to make something specific enough to justify its own existence, but not so self-centered that it becomes overly indulgent. It’s a fine line to walk, but one that writer/cartoonist Zerocalcare has done before in his career.
Two years ago, his Netflix series “Tear Along the Dotted Line” combined angst, melancholy, and empathy in its main character Zero, dealing with the pain of a recent tragedy along with the rest of his closeknit friend group. “This World Can’t Tear Me Down” is another Zero-centered tale, this time dealing with the kind of widespread disaffectedness bubbling up through an entire generation. Told with a near-impossible amount of energy, along with a healthy dose of self-doubt, this latest six-episode Netflix series keeps those same ideas of friendship and transposes it onto a dilemma...

Michele Rech is one of the most popular cartoonists from Italy, but you’d know him better by his pen name, Zerocalcare, aka Zero. In Netflix’s newest animated comedy series, This World Can’t Tear Me Down, Zero stars as himself as he observes how people have fallen into apathy and selfishness in a town that he no longer recognizes. It all begins with a refugee crisis and snowballs into a clash between two parties, but Zero delivers a message that goes beyond riots, refugees, and government politics. Here’s what happens in this comedy series, This World Can’t Tear Me Down.
Spoilers Ahead
Why Does Zero Tear Posters?
Zerocalcare is coming off the high of earning a Netflix show for his cartoons; he’s bought a house, is always busy making comics, and the only free time he gets is spent with his buddies Sarah and Secco. Although he...

Europe has been the center of a lot of controversies in recent times because of the refugee crisis, as nations like Italy, France, and Sweden have become the hotbeds of influxes of refugees from African and Asian nations. Set against the backdrop of such a refugee crisis in Rome, Italy, Zerocalcare brings to life his graphic novel collection about the observations he’s made in his town about all the things that strike him as odd. Michele Rech, under his pen name Zerocalcare or Zero, gets a show on Netflix where his comics are presented as animations, and it’s a short and entertaining ride, but it leaves you thinking by the time the final episode ends. Titled This World Can’t Tear Me Down, the 6-episode comedy series showcases themes of an identity crisis, the evils of addiction, internal struggles, and how friendship is the most important bond that we’ve got in this life.
