Kristine Froseth is used to being the new girl. The New Jersey-born actress moved from Norway and back every few years for her father’s banking job, seesawing between friendships and cultures. Due to her nomadic lifestyle, she struggled to find herself during her formative years, she says, similar to her character Nan St. George in Apple TV’s The Buccaneers.
“I just wanted to fit in so desperately,” Froseth tells Rolling Stone. “So, I adapted to whatever people were doing. I was a chameleon.”
In The Buccaneers, whose finale dropped Dec.

More accusations have surfaced regarding James Bond director Cary Fukunaga’s alleged misconduct and grooming of younger women on film and TV productions, with one person accusing him of an “absolute, clear-cut abuse of power” on the set of Apple TV+’s “Masters of the Air.”
In a new report from Rolling Stone, nearly a dozen anonymous sources accused the 44-year-old “No Time to Die” director of pursuing sexual relationships with multiple younger female cast and crew members on his productions.
One crew member on “Masters of the Air” said that Fukunaga’s persistence in pursuing these relationships “bordered on workplace harassment,” while another source who said she dated Fukunaga for a few months after meeting him on a set said that “he made me feel so claustrophobic and suffocating.”

“No Time to Die” director Cary Fukunaga is being accused of inappropriate workplace behavior and abusing his power on set to engage in relationships with younger women. Anonymous sources from the production of the upcoming AppleTV+ miniseries “Masters of the Air,” on which the 44-year-old Fukunaga serves as a director, told Rolling Stone that he engaged in an “absolute, clear-cut abuse of power” when engaging with young female actresses and crew members.
Fukunaga denies the claim, with his attorney Michael Plonsker issuing a statement that notes, “There is nothing salacious about pursuing friendships or consensual romantic relationships with women.” Plonsker continued that “no one ever — not once — voiced such sentiments to” Fukunaga over harassment claims. “He creates a work environment that is creative, collaborative and welcoming to all,” Plonsker said in a statement.

After wrapping up a scene on the set of Apple TV’s World War II miniseries Masters of the Air, most of the cast and crew decamped. Director Cary Fukunaga, though, hung back and began to take photos of two actresses.
According to two production sources, the celebrated director’s focus was not on the scene’s main players, but rather on two of the background actresses — one of whom had recently turned 18 — dressed as prostitutes from the 1940s. Taking pictures of the young women, he egged them on while they posed suggestively,...

“No Time to Die” director Cary Joji Fukunaga has been accused of inappropriate sexual advances by at least three young actresses.
In a series of online posts last week, actress Rachelle Vinberg (HBO’s “Betty”) last week accused Fukunaga of taking advantage of their two-decade age difference, claiming he began pressuring her into a romantic relationship just after she had turned 18. She said they became “completely fully intimate” several years later, before he broke it off when she was 21.
Meanwhile, twin actresses Hannah and Cailin Loesch (Netflix’s “Maniac”) said they endured the director’s simultaneous romantic pursuit of both of them, with requests for a “threesome” and an encounter last year in his New York City penthouse during which they said “he grabbed [Cailin] and pulled her on top of him, Hannah still right there” — which left Cailin “terrified.”

When costume designer Cristina Spiridakis was building the wardrobe for “Betty” cast member Rachelle Vinberg, she had one guiding question for her: “What is your worst nightmare?”
The second season of the HBO skate culture comedy finds its five protagonists — Camille (Vinberg), Kirt (Nina Moran), Janay (Dede Lovelace), Honeybear (Moonbear) and Indigo (Ajani Russell) — stepping into womanhood and tackling all the challenges that brings. For Camille, that means coming to head, yet again, with sexism in skating. But this time it’s through a sponsorship deal.
“Especially designing a show like this, it becomes so clear how different the women’s lines are,” Spiridakis tells Variety, referencing the haul of free, but not functional clothes Camille receives in exchange for branded social media posts. “I think a lot of brands tend to not think that women have to move in the same way as men to skate. The pants are all incredibly tight,...

On the one hand, this turn of events clears out the streets for the women to skate together, and the show’s creator and chief director Crystal Moselle takes full advantage, filming the city with just her characters rolling through it like it’s their own playground. Last year Crystal Moselle dazzled audiences with “Betty,” a six-episode adaptation of her 2018 feature film “Skate Kitchen.” Now, the crew is back for Season 2 and there looks to be plenty more skateboarding, as well as an increased desire to find relationships and individual identity.
As the trailer shows, the same New York-based female skateboarders are back with a desire to make a new video showing off their skills. Unfortunately for them, they’ve just lost the lease to their building. Each of the girls is going through struggles with regards to finding love or a job, and through it all the bigger examination is: When is skateboarding just enough?

Since making an astonishing debut with 2015’s riveting hybrid documentary “The Wolfpack,” filmmaker Crystal Moselle has continued to push the envelope with her distinctive style, honing her singular cinematic voice while expanding her artistic palette. Her luminous narrative feature debut, “Skate Kitchen” (2018), represented a confident transition from inventive documentary style into a compelling but loosely constructed narrative. For her evocative portrait of an all-girl skate crew, Moselle cast first-time actors primarily on visual style and charisma, then shaped the story around them. The result was one of the best movies in recent memory to portray contemporary, young, adult women with the style and tenacity they deserve.
Shrewdly building on the solid foundation Moselle laid in “Skate Kitchen,” HBO has given the filmmaker a six-episode, half-hour series to further explore her unique cast of characters. Re-titled “Betty,” the show brings back tomboy shredder Camille (Rachelle Vinberg), stoner lothario Kirt (Nina Moran...

If you’re a girl who hangs around a skatepark, you’re considered a “Betty.” It doesn’t matter if you’re sitting on the sidelines watching, or if you’re actually grinding out there right next to the guys — the malecentric, bro-heavy law of the ollie-friendly concrete jungles dictates that any young woman within proximity to a skateboard is a Betty. The term is reductive at best, and dismissive and downright sexist at worst. Take a peek at the Urban Dictionary definition of the term, and that should give...

Seen any good movies lately? Chances are you haven’t, at least not in theaters. But as our new stay-at-home normal stretches out into another month, some films once destined for the multiplex have started to show up in other locations. Remember that comedy that reunites Kumail Nanjiani with Michael Showalter, the director of The Big Sick, and co-stars Insecure‘s Issa Rae? That’s coming to a home theater near you in May. Ditto a controversial documentary about sexual harassment in the music industry and the final installment of...

“Betty” looks like how being a teenager feels. Shot during a vibrant New York City summer, the show zips alongside its characters as they weave through traffic, across parks, over bridges on their skateboards. When it slows down, it’s to take in the view, have a laugh, shoot the shit. But within minutes it’s inevitably off and running into the blinking sun again, winding down the city streets with such visceral verve that you can practically feel the wind whipping through your own hair through the screen.

Although “The L Word: Generation Q” may have tried desperately to speak to a “new generation” of queer women and non-binary folks, fresher creative voices quickly rose to the top in its place. (Though people still watched). Showtime’s “Work in Progress” was the best queer comedy of the year, Netflix’s “Feel Good” was an unexpected delight, and “Vida” is returning just in time for queer audiences to catch up on the best show about queer women of color on TV. Yet another contender released a promising first trailer today: “Betty” is a stylish and youthful portrait of Brooklyn teen skaters that already appears extremely queer.
The six-part half-hour arrives on HBO from filmmaker Crystal Moselle, who quickly made waves in 2015 with her her riveting documentary hybrid “The Wolfpack.” “Betty” is adapted from her second feature, the similarly hybridized “Skate Kitchen,” which followed a group of teenage girl skaters in New York City.

HBO has dropped the official trailer for “Betty,” an upcoming series that will center on a group of skateboard-loving women as they navigate life in New York City after the events of “Skate Kitchen.”
“Betty” serves as a spinoff to the 2018 film “Skate Kitchen” and will focus on the group’s efforts to stand out in New York City’s male-dominated world of skateboarding. Series stars include Dede Lovelace, Moonbear, Nina Moran, Ajani Russell, and Rachelle Vinberg, who all starred in “Skate Kitchen.” The series, which consists of six half-hour episodes, will premiere on May 1.
Per HBO, the characters are summarized as: “Opinionated and loyal, Janay (Lovelace) is strong willed and stubborn in ways that both help and hurt her. Honeybear (Moonbear) is a quiet storm. Her flagrant style is a ruse; an armor she wears to hide her emotional struggles. Kirt (Moran) is a lover (to the ladies), a...

Three years in the making, Joe Cole starrer A Prayer Before Dawn will start its theatrical release this weekend. The A24 title, which debuted at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, is based on a non-fiction book written by Billy Moore, played by Cole in the feature, which opens in select cities Friday. The Wolfpack filmmaker Crystal Moselle returns with her narrative feature debut, Skate Kitchen, which premiered at Sundance where Magnolia Pictures caught the film in January. The film follows a group of young women who she met on the subway in a story that has some parallel to their real lives. And Oscilloscope is opening Madeline’s Madeline with newcomer Helena Howard along with Molly Parker and Miranda July. Also a Sundance debut, the company said it has been championed by critics, which it hopes will overcome skepticism by some exhibitors. The company said its trailer, however, has reached ‘cult’ status.

Crystal Moselle’s new film Skate Kitchen opens on Long Island teen Camille (Rachelle Vinberg) as she carves up a Lower East Side park on her board. She’s weightless, carefree, in her element – until she wipes out, and hard. She sustains a particularly intimate injury known as getting “credit carded” (give it a moment’s thought), and starts to bleed profusely from between her legs. The symbolism gets right up in the viewer’s face: skating is pain, and pain makes women out of girls.

The dog days of summer are upon us.
And no, not just because “Dog Days,” the canine comedy starring Finn Wolfhard, Nina Dobrev, and Vanessa Hudgens, opens on Wednesday. Unless “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” remains exceptionally strong in its third outing, it looks like a low-$20 million debut from Warner Bros.’ big-budget shark thriller “The Meg” will be enough to nab the top slot at the domestic box office.
Will “The Meg” be worth the wait? Estimates show the action feature about a prehistoric Megaladon shark is targeting between $20 million and $22 million when it opens on over 3,900 screens. That’s not a promising start for a movie that’s been in development for over two decades and now carries a hefty $150 million price tag. Even so, Warner Bros. isn’t sweating just yet. “The Meg,” directed by Jon Turteltaub, is a co-production with China, meaning the studio is banking on big...

At the end of Bruce Beresford’s 1981 coming-of-age film “Puberty Blues,” two teenage girls who had been relegated to surfer-groupie status grab their own boards and defiantly charge into the waves. "Why were you skating with them?!" Magnolia Pictures has released the first official trailer for a rad indie film titled Skate Kitchen, the first feature from The Wolf Pack director Crystal Moselle. The cast includes Jaden Smith as a love interest, and the rest of the girls: Nina Moran, Dede, Kabrina Adams, Jules Lorenzo, Ajani Russell, and Ardelia Lovelace. When “The Wolfpack” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015, Crystal Moselle’s fascinating portrait of homeschooled cinephiles was all anyone could talk about. Three years later, Moselle’s innate knack for finding authentic characters has led to “Skate Kitchen,” her narrative feature debut which just released a visually compelling first trailer. After wowing crowds at Sundance in 2015 with her portrait of the extraordinary Angulo siblings in the brilliant documentary The Wolfpack, director Crytal Moselle returns with an impressive debut fiction feature which follows the trials and tribulations of a New York all girl skateboarding group in the fantastically understated Skate Kitchen. Staring mostly non professional actors, the film offers an opportunity for the acclaimed documentarian to showcase her cinéma vérité credentials in a productions which is reminiscent of Larry Clark and Harmony Korine’s groundbreaking 1995 film Kids.
Rachelle Vinberg, co-founder of the real Skate Kitchen skateboarding collective, stars as a Camille, a shy 18-year-old living deep in the suburbs of Long Island with her mother (played by Elizabeth Rodriguez). After a dramatic skating accident in which she is “credit-carded” (a term used by female skateboarders to describe a dangerous and very painful groin injury), Camille reluctantly promises her worried mother to never skate again.

Sundance Film Festival ‘18: London runs May 30 - June 2, 2018 at Picturehouse Central. For a film that’s so much about love of skateboarding, Skate Kitchen opens with the kind of blood-pouring skate-related injury that sets the teeth on edge. Thankfully, this visceral injury is the only one of its kind in the film, opening with one of the worst possible iterations of what can happen to a female skateboarder before allowing us to see the enthusiasm, love, and enjoyment that its characters get from the sport. "You’ve been credit-carded!" someone cringes about the incident after the fact, revealing that the dangers are both commonplace and understood by the skaters in the film. Crystal Moselle’s first feature is focused on a hip and dedicated New York City skate subculture; one that has traditionally been the refuge of cool teenage boys. Rachelle Vinberg is Camille, a reserved but passionate skateboarder...

This morning both the Sundance Institute and Picturehouse announced this year’s programme for Sundance Film Festival: London. Female stories and filmmakers shine brightly in this years line-up as seven out of the twelve films showcased at this year’s Sundance Film Festival: London were directed by women. Along with a thrilling array of female leads on screen, the selection champions female voices and highlights some of the broad and excellent women-led work direct from Sundance Utah.
The Festival, which will take place between the 31st May – 3 June at Picturehouse Central, will open with the UK premiere of Jennifer Fox’s The Tale, starring Laura Dern and Elizabeth Debicki. The festival also honours British talent once again, this time by premiering Idris Elba’s directorial debut, Yardie. Women in Film takes centre stage at this year’s event, as movements such as Time’s Up and #MeToo continue to highlight inequality in the film industry.
