I believe that instead of your own original experiences, if you take inspiration only from other works of art, then you end up creating something that lacks authenticity. I don’t deny that every work of art, every idea, is inspired by other art or ideas to some extent, but still, if you deal with it smartly, then you would avoid making it look like an imitation. I mean, the casting of Upendra Limaye in the role of a sharpshooter and a gun aficionado was like parroting the character of Freddy Patil from Animal. Velma has declared her last “Jinkies!” on Max. The streamer has canceled the animated series after two seasons, TVLine has confirmed.

“Over the past two seasons, Mindy [Kaling] and Charlie [Grandy] have created an incredibly fun and fresh world within the iconic whodunit franchise,” reads a statement from Max. “While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we thank them for their compelling coming-of-age storytelling, unrivaled clues, and hilarious hijinks.”

What Is Velma’s Origin?

The character of Velma first burst onto our TV screens back in 1969 as part of Mystery Incorporated, the gang of savvy teen sleuths that made up the cast of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?. When the original creators Joe Ruby and Ken spears penned the first series, it is unlikely they knew just what an enduring franchise they were creating that is still enjoyed by audiences today over fifty years later.

A really entertaining animated series suitable for the whole family which has known how to adapt television rhythm to the characters of Dreamworks movies and has managed, with the voices of Jack Black and Rita Ora, a delightfully entertaining delicacy with all the necessary ingredients.

Although it does not have the speed of the movies and does not seek spectacularity, it is a series that rests on the attractive personalities of the characters and the funny things and sense of humor in the ingenious dialogues and has an entertaining storyline, which is attractive and above all, lots of fun.

This series will be enjoyed by big and small viewers in a way that only Dreamworks knows how to do.

If the rule for covers of widely cherished songs — make it your own, or leave it alone — holds for adaptations of beloved television shows, then in one respect, HBO Max’s “Velma” is a towering success. To be fair, this thoroughly modern reimagining of “Scooby-Doo” maintains the load-bearing beams of the over 50-year-old cartoon’s lore. It’s still set in Crystal Cove, a coastal enclave known for its gem deposits, teenage busybodies and, depending on whom you ask, an overpopulation of either ghosts or fallen magnates with a passion for cosplay.

Beyond that, “Velma” is irreverent to a fault. Starring Mindy Kaling, and developed by her longtime collaborator Charlie Grandy, “Velma” treats most of the “Scooby” canon as suggestions whispered too low to be heard. The most obvious detour is the absence of the iconic talking dog, as “Velma” is a prequel set well before the events of the...

Here is what HBO Max’s Velma is not: It’s not the Scooby-Doo you remember from your childhood, or that your parents do from theirs. (The Great Dane doesn’t even appear, in fact.) It’s neither a faithful update of those wholesome old cartoons, nor an attempt to reboot them with more dramatic heft. It’s not just another supernatural teen drama, and it’s not just another superhero origin story.

It’s too smart for all of that, or so it believes. From its first minutes, Velma is a thoroughly meta affair, winking at the sillier staples of the Scooby-Doo universe, at the lore and the stereotypes built around its characters, at the absurdity of TV screenwriting conventions in general. But if Velma delights in sending up all the usual tropes, it seems somewhat less sure of what it has to offer in their stead.
