But following a “tsunami” of interest from eager ticket buyers, the show will transfer after its run in Stratford to London’s Garrick Theatre for 14 weeks from September 30 through January 6.
If the phenomenal level of interest is maintained, then expect seats at the Garrick to be hard to come by after they go on priority sale from March 28, with public booking from April 6.
The plain fact is that O’Farrell’s engrossing novel has sold more than 1.5 million copies and has fans on every continent.
Her story of the plain-speaking, free-spirited Agnes Hathaway; her relationship with Shakespeare; the heartbreaking death of Hamnet, their 11-year-old son; and how that tragedy inspired the Bard to write Hamlet; touched a nerve coming out as it did during the pandemic. “It’s totally a love story, it’s very romantic,” Chakrabarti told us.
‘Hamnet’ director Erica Whyman
Also, Chakrabarti continued: “Shakespeare is endlessly fascinating because we are trying to work out who was the man behind these amazing pieces of work, but Maggie O’Farrell’s book asks: Who was the family behind him? Anne, or Agnes, Hathaway has had a pretty bad press, and this redresses some of those injustices.”
Whyman had a “hunch”the RSC ought to put it on stage the minute she’d finished reading it because it dealt “so beautifully with bereavement and love.”
That love, Whyman observed, “carried Shakespeare to some of the most remarkable achievements of his life, notably writing Hamlet.”
Liza Marshall’s Hera Pictures already had acquired an option, and the movie’s in development with Neal Street Productions, founded by Sam Mendes, Pippa Harris and Caro Newling, and Amblin Partners. Chiara Atik is writing the screenplay.

However, O’Farrell and Neal Street had a keenness for it to be staged in Stratford, so agreements were struck with the RSC for Neal Street, in association with Hera Pictures, to allow a theater version that would be separate from the movie. Amblin has been supporting the stage adaptation enthusiastically.
O’Farrell has been giving “hands-on” attention to both the screenplay and the stage play, Newling said.
Newling admitted that “it’s unusual” to “shout about” transferring before you’ve opened, but “there was this tsunami of interest, and we were never going to satisfy the extraordinary level of interest during the run at the Swan alone. There is such demand for this title,” she added.
Maggie O’Farrell. Courtesy RSC.
The play’s a terrific opportunity for Mantock, who made her debut in a recent revival of Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit directed by Richard Eyre.
Whyman, Chakrabarti and Newling all spoke of their excitement in finding Mantock, heaping casting director Amy Ball with praise.
“It’s simple,” said Whyman “She has got really old-fashioned star quality but at the same time has got her feet firmly on the ground. Agnes is a hard-working, fearless woman who knows her own mind, and so does Madeleine.”
For the Nottinghamshire-born Mantock, Agnes is a “giant role” for her. “It does feel like the role of a lifetime. I don’t know if I’ll get this opportunity again, so I’m very grateful.”
The cast got to meet O’Farrell during rehearsals, and Mantock remembers the novelist telling the company “that ‘not every person in history is remembered kindly and sometimes they are misremembered,’ and I think we all felt lucky to have a responsibility to look at how we might choose to see Anne Hathaway this time.”
Mantock said that “there’s a lot of pain and loss and grief, but there’s also the love, the joy and the hope. And you have to feel all of those things … that’s what life is.”
She noted the advantages of having Chakrabarti at rehearsals, plus, if needs be, “if we get a bit stumped and we don’t know which way to go with something, we can go to the book. We’ve got this amazing resource.”
So first the Swan Theatre, followed by a season at the Garrick in the West End. The phenomenon of Hamnet is unlikely to end there.
There’s Broadway and beyond.

The cast also includes Tom Vary as William and Sarah Belcher, Will Brown, Haydn Burke, Ajani Cabey, Faye Campbell, Frankie Hastings, Karl Haynes, Alex Jarrett, Hannah McPake, Elizabeth Rider, Rose Riley, Harmony Rose-Bremner, Obioma Ugoala and Peter Wight.

Content Warning: The following article contains mention of suicide and violence. It also includes spoilers for Red Rose season 1.
The Netflix horror thriller Red Rose went into detail about the app behind the apparent suicides of two teenagers, and while it already looked sinister at the beginning, the world uncovered by Wren and her friends proved even scarier. Despite initially being described as an app preying on teenagers during their most vulnerable moments, the Red Rose app quickly unleashed its full potential, effectively terrorizing two teenagers that did not know each other. However, the world that Wren, Noah, Ash, Taz, Antony, and Jaya eventually discovered made the app even more dangerous, especially as its victims could never see how they were being manipulated.

With more people online than ever, the internet isn’t as intimidating and alien as it used to be. Everything also seems easier when you’re connected. Yet when the young and unaware characters in Netflix’s latest series Red Rose download a mysterious phone app, they fall prey to an anonymous predator lurking behind the screen. This basic concept of malevolent cyber forces affecting the real world is nothing novel, especially in such a contemporary setting, but this show does a convincing job of making the web feel unsafe again.
Red Rose, a BBC series that first aired in 2022, is set in the creators’ hometown of Bolton, England. Michael and Paul Clarkson (co-producers of The Haunting of Bly Manor) and production company Eleven (The Enfield Haunting) collaborated on this gripping exercise in technological terror. The story follows a clique of friends whose ostensible leader is targeted by the titular app.

Red Rose is one of those urban legends transformed into a series which, if in the hands of others would have been a disaster, but here we have the BBC which tries to make a good series with a plot that seems “impossible” and manages to do it.

Traditionally, January and February are the dumping ground for major Hollywood studios. With awards season in full swing and audiences playing catchup on the biggest titles of the prior year, the first two months are usually the perfect place for dropping projects that don't inspire much confidence. But the rise of streaming is slowly changing that trend. Less concerned about the box office and much more obsessed with keeping their release schedules consistent, streamers like Netflix make sure to always have exciting new titles lined up, dump months be damned. So expect another full slate on the streamer as we enter February. Just because it's the shortest month of the year, doesn't mean we can't still have plenty of fun!
Below is a list (and some curated standout titles) of everything coming to Netflix in February 2023.

Note: The following contains spoilers for Catherine Called Birdy.
Director Lena Dunham described Karen Cushman’s “Catherine Called Birdy” as a work ingrained in her DNA with a world easy to bring to the screen and populate, but she did want to give the story a more hopeful ending.
Dunham’s film follows Cushman’s story pretty closely, which focuses on young Lady Catherine, who goes by Birdy (Bella Ramsey), daughter of Lord Rollo (Andrew Scott) and Lady Aislinn (Billie Piper). Birdy’s impending arranged marriage to some random stranger drives the film’s plot, as she does everything humanly possible to turn off her suitors.
“The last act shifts pretty significantly from the book, and that just had to do with a real desire to be able to leave Birdy’s character in a better place than we found her,” Dunham said in a recent interview with TheWrap. “The book has a beautiful ending,...

Nowadays, medieval reimaginings about a spunky modern girl ahead of her time are a dime a dozen. Call it the "Arya" effect, but as long as YA has existed (maybe even longer), so has the headstrong female character who bucks gender norms and only wants to play in the mud or with swords. And Birdy, the title character of the charming but slight "Catherine Called Birdy," appears to fall too easily into this category. But writer-director Lena Dunham, dipping her toes into family comedy territory for the first time, imbues "Catherine Called Birdy" with enough irreverence and absurdity to give star Bella Ramsey the chance to soar beyond her fellow "strong female characters" — even if the movie is not quite as dazzling as she is.

‘Catherine Called Birdy’ Is the Family-Friendly Feminist Medieval Comedy We Needed, and So Much More

Around the midway point of Catherine Called Birdy, Lena Dunham’s deliriously fun yet pointed adaptation of Karen Cushman’s YA book, our hero — a 14 year-old named Catherine, nicknamed (surprise!) “Birdy,” played remarkably and brilliantly by Bella Ramsey — begins to list off what girls are not allowed to do. They can’t go on crusades, cut their hair or be horse trainers. They aren’t permitted to be monks or go to hangings; forget about drinking in public houses or, God forbid, they laugh very loud. All strictly verboten.

Dir: Lena Dunham. Starring: Bella Ramsey, Andrew Scott, Billie Piper, Joe Alwyn, Dean-Charles Chapman, Ralph Ineson, Isis Hainsworth, Russell Brand. 12A, 108 minutes.
In Lena Dunham’s adaptation of Karen Cushman’s Nineties children’s novel, we meet a young maiden in the 1290s, Lady Catherine aka Birdy (Bella Ramsey). She’s sweet, rambunctious and utterly blithe when it comes to her privilege. Nestled inside a workman’s cart, on the way to see her friend Aelis (Isis Hainsworth), she wonders what life must be like for the peasant class. She finds them exquisitely fascinating, “so simple… so passionate… so toothless”.
Catherine Called Birdy, paired with Sharp Stick, still unreleased in the UK, form Dunham’s first features since 2010’s Tiny Furniture. She's back and armed to the teeth with millennial ennui, her usual trademarks retooled only to suit her tween audience. The honesty is there. The acerbic wit. The semi-intentional...

Teen horror Red Rose arrived on BBC Three this week to ruin the sacred relationship between a youth and their phone. As if the internet wasn’t scary enough already, in Red Rose a sinister app appears to drive teenagers to commit suicide. Is it supernatural? Who’s behind it? Why? And who will it strike next? This Bolton-set chiller is refreshingly funny at the same time as being super dark. Created by Michael and Paul Clarkson who have horror pedigree as producers on The Haunting of Bly Manor, the show features a strong ensemble cast of scrappy Northerners who call their collective group ‘the dickheads’. Over eight episodes the mystery of Red Rose slowly unfolds with some big old twist right up to the conclusion. Let’s break down the big questions posed by that ending.
Is Red Rose supernatural?
Nope, turns out man made. It’s not...

Social media is bad and scary, young women are frequently horrible to each other and everyone spends too much time on their phones is actually Not the main take away from the first three episodes of this sort-of-ya sort-of-horror series new to BBC Three. It’s actually a lot more nuanced than that in a series that initially plays like a mash up of 2010s horror, 1990s teen drama and Derry Girls’ potty-mouth rough-and-ready sense of humour. Weird combo though that may sound, in Red Rose it works, picking the best of the tropes, populating the show with likeable and believable characters and sprinkling modern social realism into the mix.

Based on the book by Karen Cushman, the story unfolds in 1290. In the Medieval English village of Stonebridge, Lady Catherine (known as Birdy) is the youngest child of Lord Rollo and Lady Aislinn. Her playground is Stonebridge Manor, a house that, like the family, has seen better days. Financially destitute and utterly greedy, Rollo sees his daughter as his path out of financial ruin by marrying her off to a wealthy man for money and land. But Birdy, like all the great teen heroines, is spirited, clever, adventurous, and ready to put off any suitor that comes calling in increasingly ingenious ways. Her imagination, defiance, and deep belief in her own right to independence put her on a collision course with her parents. When the vilest suitor of all arrives, they are presented with the...

A good year for Lena Dunham fans, most of all those who crave films about a girl’s unusual, tempestuous coming-of-age. With the excellent Sharp Stick (about which we recently spoke to Dunham) still rolling into theaters, a fall release looms for Catherine Called Birdy, her adaptation of Karen Cushman’s beloved children’s novel—suggesting a tamer project than her latest, but that’s a) not saying much and b) hardly suggesting a change of pace.
Being that Catherine concerns a girl (in England circa 1290) who must fight off suitors her parents sell her to for money, the material seems suited to Dunham’s interest in gender roles and autonomy. But (just as importantly) the preview looks plainly funny, with the added bonus that Amazon’s money is clearly well-geared towards creating a period piece.

Different century, same search for gender equality.
Lena Dunham’s third feature film “Catherine Called Birdy” is set in a Medieval English village in 1290, where teenage Lady Catherine (Bella Ramsey) is assigned the task of finding a husband. Her father (Andrew Scott) is determined to capitalize on the marriage of his eldest daughter Catherine in order to save their manor. The only issue? Tween Catherine refuses to comply.
“Would I choose to die rather than be forced to marry?” Catherine (Ramsey) says in the trailer. “I do not think either option is appealing. Or fair.”
Written and directed by Emmy nominee Dunham and adapted from Karen Cushman’s novel of the same name, “Catherine Called Birdy” will premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival before debuting in theaters September 23 before streaming globally on Prime Video October 7.
Joe Alwyn, Ralph Ineson, Billie Piper, Isis Hainsworth, and Russell Brand also star in the coming-of-age period piece.

“Catherine Called Birdy,” the latest film from writer-director Lena Dunham, will make its world premiere at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Bella Ramsey (“Game of Thrones”) takes on the titular role of Lady Catherine (better known as “Birdy”) in the adaptation of Karen Cushman’s 1995 novel. A high-spirited and fiercely independent teenager, Birdy was perhaps born into the wrong time and place – the Medieval village of Stonebridge, to be exact. As the youngest child of Lady Aislinn and Lord Rollo, she’s supposed to marry a wealthy man to save the family from financial destitution. Birdy keeps inventing new ways to foil her father’s plan, until a particularly heinous suitor forces her parents to choose between their greed and their daughter’s happiness.

Photo: ‘Metal Lords’ Overview Released April 8th, new and exclusive to Netflix – ‘Metal Lords’! This film follows the stories of high school students Kevin, Hunter, and Emily who have little in common except their ability to put on a show. Kevin (portrayed by Jaeden Martell), is your standard high school loser archetype. He plays in the school marching band to get out of Pe and gets shoved around the halls by the jocks. Hunter (portrayed by Adrian Greensmith) is your standard cinematic understanding of a metal kid. He likes heavy music, his guitar, Dungeons & Dragons, and little else. The character of Emily (portrayed by Isis Hainsworth) is different from our “opposites attract” best friends though. She doesn’t follow a popular cinematic archetype, and instead radiates an energy that is not commonly seen in coming of age films. That energy being the rage that teens start to feel when dealing with guilt.

In a film that sings the praises of heavy metal music and reveres those who create it, “Metal Lords” stumbles in its ability to truly rock. Director Peter Sollett’s coming-of-age feature centered on two teen outcasts who form a hardcore metal band explores some fairly unexpected, dark recesses given its lighthearted, comedically-inclined premise. Sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll are on the set list, yet it plays too fast and loose, failing to achieve a good balance to make the chords reverberate louder. And just as it begins to get into its groove, the song abruptly ends.

There hasn’t been a “battle of the bands” since an unfortunate scrotal incident scarred many a teen not expecting nudity a few years back, but the mere mention of the possibility Dean Swanson (Sufe Bradshaw) decided to give her students another shot has Hunter Sylvester (Adrian Greensmith) salivating. The problem: he doesn’t have a band. Wanting one and having one are two different things and Dad’s (Brett Gelman) money can only get Hunter so far before a reality check proves necessary. That’s the one thing he refuses to accept, though. His love for metal and unyielding determination given as a sacrifice to the genre’s Satanic gods must manifest success into existence no matter how many enemies are made in the process.

Jaeden Martell, Isis Hainsworth and newcomer Adrian Greensmith will star in “Metal Lords,” David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ first film at Netflix.
Martell, Hainsworth and Greensmith star in the film, directed by Peter Sollett (“Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist”), about two kids who want to start a heavy metal band “in a high school where exactly two kids care about heavy metal.”
Martell is known best for his roles in “Knives Out” and “It,” while Hainsworth appeared in “Misbehaviour” and “Emma.” Greensmith makes his feature debut in the film; the newcomer is currently studying at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London.
Weiss wrote the film’s script and produces alongside Greg Shapiro, with Benioff, Bernie Caulfield and Robin Fisichella as executive producers. Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave rocker Tom Morello serves as executive music producer for the film, which is set for global release on Netflix later this year.
