Of course Saturday Night Live went there.
When someone hangs a piñata stuffed with irresistible goodies right in front of your eyes, and an Aaron Judge size baseball bat to smash it with, what else can you do but swing away?
The cold open Saturday night was always going to feature a parody of Katie Britt describing America’s descent into an apocalyptic hellscape from her spotless, lifeless kitchen–because the laughs were there for the picking.
But credit where it’s due: SNL elevated the bit to memorable status by recreating the Alabama Senator’s weird theatrics and creepy demeanor—not to mention every detail of her startlingly expensive- but banal-looking kitchen—and casting an imported major movie star to assume the role, Scarlett Johansson. (Straight from Colin Jost’s kitchen.)
The result was a sharply written, superbly performed—and remarkably up to the moment–bit of satire. Johansson had the look,...

Shohei Ohtani has announced his next team on Instagram: The Los Angeles Dodgers.
ESPN is reporting that the two-time Mvp has struck a deal for 10 years and $700 million, the latter the biggest deal in baseball history with an average annual value of $70 million, not including endorsements, of which there will be plenty.
Ohtani was known to be seeking a deal above $500 million, but today’s figure was stunning, dwarfing previous huge outlays for such stars as ex-Angels teammate Mike Trout and the New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge.
Ohtani started his career with the Los Angeles Angels after several years in Japanese baseball, and became a dominant two-way MLB talent. Every big market team was reportedly attempting to lure him, with the Toronto Blue Jays allegedly the leader until today’s announcement.

NY Yankees’ Aaron Judge Said Shohei Ohtani Breaking His Home Run Record Would Be ‘Good For The Game’
Aaron Judge doesn’t mind that his American League record for home runs may last only one season.
Shohei Ohtani entered Wednesday with 35 home runs through the Angels’ first 96 games, putting him on pace for 59. While that’s short of Judge’s record 62, home runs tend to come in bunches.
“Records are meant to be broken,” Judge said Wednesday afternoon in the visiting dugout at Angel Stadium. “It’s just a record. It’ll be exciting for the game if he went out there and got 63-plus. We’ll see what happens.”
Judge said if Ohtani breaks his mark, he’ll use it as incentive.
“I still got quite a few years left in this game,” he said. “So if [Ohtani] breaks it, that’ll give me another opportunity to go out there and try to do something special. But I’m not really too focused on that right now. I...

If you’re a Major League Baseball fan, you’ve doubtless been experiencing some anxiety in recent weeks thanks to the ongoing decline of the regional sports network (Rsn) market. Many MLB teams see their games primarily distributed by RSNs, and the filing of bankruptcy by Bally Sports' parent company and the departure of Warner Bros. Discovery from its RSNs have left fans with tons of questions.
Thankfully for devotees of America’s Game, there will still be one contest to watch nearly every day of the first month of the season on ESPN+. Starting on Opening Day and running throughout the month of April, ESPN+ will feature some of the top teams in the league as they try to get their regular season off on the right foot. Local blackout restrictions do apply, so if your local team is your favorite this isn’t the best way to see their games.

Aaron Judge has a few game-day rituals. First, he likes to chew bubblegum before stepping onto the field. There's also the importance of a good walk-up song: the baseball player, who was recently announced as the 16th captain for the New York Yankees, said he used to listen to "Hello" by Pop Smoke right before a game. Now, he's testing out some new options, much to the enjoyment of his wife, Samantha Bracksieck. "This is by far the toughest decision any baseball player has to make in the off season," Judge jokingly told Jimmy Fallon on "The Tonight Show" on Jan. 23.
Judge explained his process. "I make a whole playlist. I have about 30 or 40 songs. I'm in my car. My wife gets mad at me," he said. "I'll be sitting there and I'll be like, 'Ok, this one. Now batting, number 99, Aaron Judge," and play it and then you know...

Time has selected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “and the spirit of Ukraine” as its Person of the Year.
“This year’s choice was the most clear-cut in memory,” the magazine’s editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal wrote. “Whether the battle for Ukraine fills one with hope or with fear, Volodymyr Zelensky galvanized the world in a way we haven’t seen in decades.”
“Zelensky has been laser-focused on keeping the world’s eyes on Ukraine,” he wrote. “The former entertainer understood innately that attention is the planet’s most valuable currency and all but cornered the global market. He did this through meticulous image-building and repetition in his message. He was blunt, sometimes sarcastic, and always directly to the point: we must save Ukraine to save democracy.”

Nine years after it disappeared from cable TV channel lineups, Speedvision is preparing to rev up its engines again.
The cable channel — which catered to automotive enthusiasts and racing fans from its launch in 1995 until Fox shut it down in 2013 — is being revived as a free ad-supported streaming network (the acronym being, appropriately, a Fast platform), with some high-profile backing.
Among the backers of the new Speedvision are Robert Scanlon, a co-founder of the original cable channel who most recently oversaw the Velocity and Motor Trend businesses for Discovery Inc.; Joe Abbruzzese, who was previously the president of advertising sales for Discovery; wrestling superstar Bill Goldberg; and automotive and racing magnate Rick Hendrick.
Scanlon will serve as the company’s president, while Abbruzzese will advise on ad sales and sponsorships. Goldberg is expected to appear as talent in some of the network’s programming.

Eddy Cue, who leads Apple’s services business and has spearheaded the company’s push into subscription streaming and live sports, called a recently minted deal with Major League Soccer “a huge global opportunity” for the tech giant.
The remarks came during a rare speaking engagement for Cue at the Paley Center for Media in New York on Tuesday afternoon, as he and Mls commissioner Don Garber discussed the 10-year partnership.
Announced last June, the agreement takes effect next summer and is reportedly worth 2.5 billion. In a milestone for the sports media business, the pact will see every Mls game delivered via a new subscription streaming outlet co-run by Apple and the league, though linear broadcasters could still take simulcast rights.
The two execs described the agreement as having an equal amount of skin in the game. Encompassing areas like production and sponsorship relations, he said, it goes beyond a traditional sports rights deal.

With one swing of the bat Tuesday night in Arlington, Texas, Aaron Judge is now baseball’s new (legitimate) home run king.

New York Yankees star Aaron Judge broke a 61-year-old record when he hit his 62nd home run in a game Tuesday against the Texas Rangers.
The slugger made history by breaking the American League record for single-season home runs that had been held by Roger Maris since 1961. Maris, in turn, had broken Babe Ruth’s record of 60 homers that he set in 1927. Judge had tied Maris for 60 home runs last week when the Yankees faced off the Toronto Blue Jays.

Baseball fans have been following New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge as he made history with his 61st home run, which he hit during a game against the Blue Jays in Toronto on Wednesday to tie Roger Maris for the home run record.
The home run was made even more memorable when a fan in the stands tried to catch the ball, and just missed. The fan’s name: Frankie Lasagna, a moniker that proved irresistible to late-night comedy hosts, as reported by Exclaim!
On “The Late Show”, for example, Stephen Colbert joked that Frankie Lasagna is “either the best name I’ve ever heard, or the worst alias in the history of the mob. ‘Eyyy, I’m Frankie Lasagna. For the Los Angeles Angels, 2023 will bring one more year of “Sho-Time.”
Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels have agreed on a 30 million contract for the 2023 season, the largest salary ever for an arbitration-eligible player. He surpassd the 27 million deal Dodger Mookie Bets signed for 27 million for the 2020 season (which was reduced due to the pandemic-shortened season).
His 24.5 million raise is also the largest ever from one year to the next. Ohtani’s 2022 salary was 5.5 million.
Ohtani will be a free agent after next year, and some are speculating the Angels might trade him. The club has been hamstrung by a bad combination of high salaries and little progress in the standings.
If he is dispatched, Ohtani would likely bring back a record haul in players and prospects.
Since arriving in 2018, he has been named the American League Rookie of the Year and the league’s Mvp. He could...

Jimmy Fallon had a few new comparisons for Donald Trump on Thursday night’s episode of “The Tonight Show,” after it was revealed this week that the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago resulted in the seizure of nearly 200,000 government documents. The late night host joked that the twice-impeached former president is either a hoarder, or just a grandpa.
In a new court filing this week, Trump’s lawyers revealed that what was previously reported to be roughly 11,000 documents taken from Trump’s resort was actually closer to 200,000. The new total was revealed to bolster their argument that the Department of Justice is being “overly optimistic and aggressive” about how soon the documents can be reviewed by an outside data vendor and the appointed special master in the case.
And really, Fallon also couldn’t get past the sheer volume of pages that officials will have to go through. First, he likened Trump to an elderly relative.

Aaron Judge is currently finishing off a historic baseball season for the New York Yankees. On Sept. 28, the 30-year-old slugger matched the American League single-season home-run record, 61, set by Roger Maris (who was also a Yankee) way back in 1961. With seven games left on the Yankees' schedule, it seems more than likely he'll set a new record. Judge also seems like a lock for American League Mvp, and he's been doing his best to carry the Bronx Bombers to a major playoff run.
By Judge's side through his historic year? His wife, Samantha Bracksieck. The duo keep their relationship very private, but Bracksieck is often spotted at Judge's games, cheering him on. They also attended the US Open together on Sept. 5 in Queens.
According to the New York Post, Bracksieck and Judge's mom, Patty, were both on hand at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 21 to see him hit his 60th home run.

The New York Yankees' Aaron Judge just made baseball history. The 30-year-old hit his 61st home run of the season during a Sept. 28 game against the Toronto Blue Jays, officially tying Roger Maris' American League record. The historic shot came in at the seventh inning, when Judge smashed a ball from Tim Mayza over the left field wall at the Rogers Centre. Prior to Maris, Babe Ruth held the record with 60 single-season home runs in 1927. With seven more games remaining, Judge could very well surpass Maris' 1961 record for most home runs in a season. However, he'll still need a dozen more successful hits if he wants to match Barry Bond's MLB record of 73...

Aaron Judge just made history during the Yankees game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Officially, he tied the all-time American League (and New York Yankees) record for most home runs in a season, held by Roger Maris since 1961. But for baseball purists (like my editor who forced me to write that headline), Judge tied the record for all-time home runs in a season league-wide.
During the 7th inning against the Toronto Blue Jays, the California native hit the ball over the bullpen and against the left field wall, marking his 61st home run this season.

It’s mid-July, which means most of the summer shows on broadcast and cable networks are in the middle of their seasons. Streamers are taking it relatively easy too, which means a relatively light menu of premieres for July 13-19 — although they include a series adaptation of the Resident Evil franchise, baseball’s annual Midsummer Classic and Nathan Fielder’s return to TV.
Below is The Hollywood Reporter‘s rundown of premieres, returns and specials over the next seven days. It would be next to impossible to watch everything, but let THR point the way to worthy options for the coming week. All times are Et/Pt unless noted.

Updated with official confirmation and comment. New York City Mayor Eric Adams made it official today, announcing in a press conference at Citi Field that athletes and performers would no longer have to be vaccinated against Covid.
The relaxation of the mandate means Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving will be able to suit up for home games, starting Sunday. Unvaccinated New York Yankees and Mets baseball players, among them Aaron Judge and Max Scherzer will also be able to play home games when the baseball season starts next month.
Employees of private companies and municipal agencies will still have to comply with the mandates. The city in recent months forced out any city workers, including police, firefighters and other essential workers, who refused to get vaccinated. The move prompted protests and lawsuits and union leaders have threatened further action.
In the news conference, Adams acknowledged the delicate balance he had to strike.
