Movie ReviewThe film, touching upon religion and extremism in its background, tells the story of Khadeeja, whose strength lies in her silences as she accepts new blows in life.CrisThe face, nonchalant for so long, breaks into a slow smile when Khadeeja sees her mother on the beach. She has come to visit with her husband when a kind neighbour of Khadeeja’s mother called to say that she is not doing too well these days. Her mental health has been deteriorating since Khadeeja’s father's death and now her brother has gone off somewhere too. Khadeeja does not say much, neither does she break down at the sudden termination of her marriage but loses her composure in the moments she thinks she's alone. Kani Kusruti as Khadeeja wonderfully transforms in these moments from a woman who's gone numb by circumstances to one embracing the emotions that life continues to bring.

InterviewThe theatre and film actor won the Kerala State award for her performance in the film ‘Biriyaani’, dedicates it to Pk Rosy.CrisThe sound of an apple bite comes through the phone as she picks up an afternoon call. In 24 hours, Kani Kusruti has hardly eaten. There has not been a moment to think about the Kerala State Award she’s won the day before – for best female actor. Biriyaani, the film that won her the award, comes about 20 years after she began acting. That first time had been on a stage, when she was a school going teenager. There have been hundreds of stages after that, and much less frequently, a film. “Something I missed telling in interviews is about the many theatre actors who have always taken acting so seriously. These are people who have gone to acting schools, trained themselves and dedicated whole lives to acting. The award is definitely a motivation.

ReviewDirector Shambu Purushothaman keeps it short and makes sure every element in the story has a purpose.CrisA woman sitting quietly by herself, enjoying her food at an engagement ceremony, watches two other women walk in. She smiles to herself. It is a scene in the middle of Paapam Cheyyathavar Kalleriyatte, and you think it doesn’t really have any purpose. This is a woman who has not been introduced, who looks like a random character on screen. But in the next scene, she has a dialogue that brings in one of the many twists in a story that began in a pretty straightforward manner. Director Shambu Purushothaman must believe in Chekhov’s gun, an interesting principle that says every element in a story must have a purpose. So, everyone from the unidentified woman who is there to overhear conversations to the main characters trying to put together an engagement ceremony,...

MollywoodThe film is a dark satire.Digital NativeDigital NativeThe makers of the Malayalam film Aabhasam are disappointed over the Cbfc decision to make cuts in their film and the 'A' certification it has received. They are fighting against the Cbfc's decision. The film was screened for the censor board officials on December 26th with plans to release the movie on January 5, 2018, but with the 'A' certification the release date had to be postponed. According to the filmmakers, the officials have advised certain cuts and also want to mute some dialogues. While the Aabhasam team is ready to opt for muting the dialogues, they are vehemently opposing the cuts, which has resulted in the postponement of its release. Lamenting about it, producer Sanju Unnithan has said that the delay in the censor certification means they have to wait for one more year to take part in the film festivals and awards. He has been quoted by the Deccan Chronicle as stating, “We are ready to comply with their demand — to make a few mutes. Still, the movie can’t escape ‘A’ certificate. Some of the claims made at the Censor Board are that the film does not convey any positive message to society and it is all dark. But it is a satire. We won’t accept the certificate and will place a request to review the decision.” Aabhasam has been written and directed by Jubith Namradath, who is making his directorial debut, and the film stars Rima Kallingal and Suraj Venjaramood in the lead roles. Others in the star cast include Alencier Ley Lopez, Indrans, Vineeth Vishwam, Anil Nedumangad, Divya Gopinath, Shyam Sheetal and others. Dev has composed the background score and Oorali has scored the music for the soundtrack. Prasanna S. Kumar has cranked the camera for this movie with Shameer and Muhammed editing it.
