- John Morton-Finney was born on June 25, 1889 in Uniontown, Kentucky, USA. He was married to Pauline Angeline Ray. He died on January 28, 1998 in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.

- Prior to his law career, Morton-Finney taught for Indianapolis Public Schools, as well as at Fisk and at Lincoln Universities. He was one of the first faculty members of Crispus Attucks High School, the only public high school for African Americans in Indianapolis, when it opened in 1927.
- The "Dr. John Morton-Finney Leadership Program" at Butler University is named after him.
- His parents, George Finney and Maryatta "Mattie" (Gordon) Finney, were former slaves. He was one of seven children.
- Served in the U.S. Army from 1911-1914, and was deployed to the Philippines.
- Inducted to the National Bar Association Hall of Fame in 1991.
