"Your brother is no to be trusted, Donald." "It's him or me." Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for Dusk for a Hitman, a Quebecois crime thriller arriving in the US to watch on VOD starting in April. This already premiered and originally opened in Canada last year obviously. Set in the late 1970s, the most feared hitman in the Montreal underworld, Donald Lavoie, found himself hunted down by his former accomplices and by a tenacious police officer. Donald finds himself caught in a tightening vise in this film based loosely on a true story. The Montreal crime thriller stars Éric Bruneau as Donald Lavoie, with Benoît Gouin, Rose-Marie Perreault, Sylvain Marcel, Simon Landry-Desy, and Joakim Robillard. This has such an obvious slick and cheesy look and feel to it, even with this guy's mustache being an important part of the performance. It's worth a look if you're into...

Montreal-based international sales company H264 has unveiled its lineup for this month’s European Film Market in Berlin, which includes François Delisle’s “Waiting for the Storms” and Léa Pool’s “Hotel Silence.” Variety has exclusive access to the first image from “Waiting for the Storms.”
“Waiting for the Storms” is described as “a fable about the climate crisis that transcends artistic boundaries to spark a dialogue between our past, present and future.” Delisle’s credits include “Chorus” and “Le Météore.”
“Across various timelines and locations, four characters weave a web of stories that explore human resilience in the face of environmental upheaval,” according to a statement.
The film follows four characters: Marie, who is gripped by obsessive, heart-wrenching questions as a young mother whose child faces a dead-end future, and channels her anxiety into passionate activism; Terence, a climate-change refugee, who tells strangers his story in the hopes of...

One of Europe’s most formidable TV forces, Zdf Enterprises, the international distribution and co-production arm of German public broadcaster Zdf, has swooped on world sales rights to “White Night” (“Nuit Blanche”), the anticipated new show from screenwriter Julie Hivon who broke out in fall 2019 with “Amber Alert,” a big audience and critical hit in French-speaking Canada.
Commissioned by CBC/Radio-Canada, Canada’s national public broadcaster, “White Night” is created by Hivon and produced by Pixcom, one of Canada’s biggest TV production houses which also backed “Amber Alert.”
It goes into production this spring, directed by Sébastien Gagné (“Lacher Prise”). Its premise looks set to deliver some kind of verdict on the legacy of big business and Canada’s past in a current world. In 1970, a Zdfe plot synopsis runs, a pivotal encounter with her soon-to-be mentor, Aidrian Flanagan, allows Louise Hébert to become a supermodel and eventually launch her first perfume,...

There’s a frustrating element to watching a film that is only partly effective. Certain elements draw you in, while others push you away. Sometimes that can be a content issue, but in the case of Most Wanted, it’s more just in how the story is being told. The dramatic elements, the crime elements, the thriller elements, they’re all there. They just never get the full attention that they deserve. In telling a split narrative, filmmaker Daniel Roby doesn’t give any element enough focus, presenting them as pieces, which prevents them from landing with their intended impact. Undoubtedly, the intentions here were good, but that alone does not a good bit of cinema make, sadly. The movie is a crime drama/thriller, based on a true story. Told in fragments, we follow three plot strands that eventually come together. For ex heroin junkie Daniel Léger (Antoine Olivier Pilon), staying clean is hard,...

"If what happened here really reaches the public, you're off." Paramount has unveiled an official trailer for an indie dramatic thriller titled Most Wanted, formerly known as Target Number One before this new title change. From Quebecois writer / director Daniel Roby, the film follows the story of real life reporter Victor Malarek who unraveled a twisted drug deal, which conspired to having the wrong guy sentenced to 100 years in a Thai prison. Antoine-Olivier Pilon stars as Daniel, who was forced into a dangerous drug deal against his will and landed himself in jail. Josh Hartnett plays the investigative journalist trying to get to the bottom of the story and free him. The full cast includes Jim Gaffigan, J.C. MacKenzie, Rose-Marie Perreault, and Don McKellar. This looks like a solid film, another tribute to intrepid journalists. Here's the first official trailer (+ new poster) for Daniel Roby's Most Wanted, direct from YouTube...

Whilst not Pascal Plante's first feature film, having previously made doc La génération porn in 2014, Fake Tattoos (Les faux tatouages) is the director's first step into feature-length drama. And it's quite the first step - one that definitely carries all of the do-or-die energy of what feels like a debut. Having admirably worked as writer, director and editor on this project, Plante now continues his clearly profound interest in youth culture, presenting the seductive tale of a new romance between music superfans Mag (Rose-Marie Perreault) and Théo (Anthony Therrien). Lead character Théo is the brooding teenage outsider, whose excellent wardrobe is made up exclusively of retro band t-shirts - picture everything from Dead Kennedys to The Clash. Music defines almost every aspect of his...
