FX’s ‘Seven Sisters’ Pilot Rounds Out Siblings With Odessa Young, Zoë Winters, & Meredith Hagner Among Six
Image
Exclusive: FX’s drama pilot Seven Sisters has cast the remainder of the siblings joining Elizabeth Olsen and Cristin Milioti as part of the core family: Meredith Hagner, Odessa Young, Zoë Winters, Bridget Brown, and Carolyn Kettig play the remaining five sisters, and Philip Ettinger will play their brother.

They join Anthony Edwards and J. Smith-Cameron, who play the patriarch and matriarch, Paul and Franchesa Bosco, respectively.

The project, from FX Productions, follows a large, tight-knit family that begins to unravel when a sister (Olsen) starts communicating with a voice no one else can hear, forcing them to confront long-buried secrets.

New to Streaming: Anora, Armand, Sing Sing, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, Baby Invasion & More
Image
Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.

Anora (Sean Baker)

Sean Baker’s Anora expands his filmmaking vision, pushing the writer-director-editor’s fifth consecutive story on sex workers into a higher plane of awards and commercial success. It’s a romantic comedy, a madcap dash around New York City, a movie ruminating on loss, love, and class disparity. Baker aims to put audiences through a ringer of emotional swings, ending with a desolation that’s been building in the background, easier to spot once the tinsel’s shimmer fades. With a true star-making performance from Mikey Madison and a deep bench of supporting actors, Anora whirls until suddenly it doesn’t, and all that’s left is earned, resonant silence from both its characters and audience. – Michael F.

Image
The Joburg Film Festival returns to the heart of South Africa’s entertainment industry from March 11 – 16, with a seventh edition that organizers say is designed to celebrate “the shared experiences and emotions that unite us through the art of storytelling.”

Building on Johannesburg’s reputation as the “city of gold,” the festival is organized around the theme of a “golden thread” running through its selection of nearly 100 feature-length and short films and documentaries. Among them is a mix that includes festival hits from the likes of Sundance, Berlin and Cannes, alongside films from the host nation and the African continent that will be reaching audiences for the first time.

“I wanted to find films that would resonate on an emotional and sympathetic level,” says Joburg Film Festival curator Nhlanhla Ndaba, “to remind us that we are a global village and to spread a little love whilst we face the reality of what is happening globally.

The project is an exploration of the psychological lengths to which a writer will go to achieve their art.

‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’ Movie Ending Explained: Does Tarrell Forgive His Father?
Image
A movie about bad parenting and (subsequent) generational trauma is not exactly something you could call groundbreaking. But the subject is universally relevant. Exhibiting Forgiveness is particularly special because director Titus Kaphar has carved this movie out of his own life. Kaphar is a visual artist who has used several of his own works—as paintings made by the movie’s lead, Tarrell, played by Andre Holland. The movie may be his first foray into cinema, but Kapher’s narrative (he has written the screenplay as well) is strong enough to hold you from start to finish. It’s not an easy watch, obviously, but it leaves you with a lot to ponder.

Spoilers Ahead

What is the movie about?

The plot is fairly simple here. Tarrell is a celebrated painter who has pretty much everything: fame, a good marriage with Aisha, who’s a singer, and a cute little boy,...

‘Gladiator II,’ ‘The Piano Lesson,’ ‘Nickel Boys’ Use the Weight of Past Events to Tell Contemporary Stories
Image
The past is ever present in our lives, so it’s unsurprising that many movies lean on that juxtaposition in the stories they tell. In 2024, the past casts an especially big shadow across films like “The Brutalist,” “Gladiator II,” “The Piano Lesson,” “Conclave,” “A Real Pain” “Exhibiting Forgiveness,” “The Return” and even the comedy “My Old Ass.”

“Memory and trauma are inextricable from the present moment,” says “Nickel Boys” director RaMell Ross.

The Holocaust looms over both “A Real Pain” and “The Brutalist,” although the former examines how the trauma still lingers existentially several generations later, while in “The Brutalist” it’s as immediate as the nose on Laszlo Toth’s face: Toth (Adrien Brody) wrecked it jumping from a train to survive, leading to a heroin addiction to treat the pain.

“We all carry our history in our body,” says Mona Fastvold, who co-wrote the movie with director Brady Corbet.

André Holland and Andra Day in Exhibiting Forgiveness (2024)
Exhibiting Forgiveness (2024) Movie Review: Art and Trauma Are Linked in an Arresting Debut By Titus Kaphar
André Holland and Andra Day in Exhibiting Forgiveness (2024)
There’s a quiet strength to “Exhibiting Forgiveness” in what is left unsaid. It would have been easy to broadly categorize writer/director Titus Kaphar’s directorial debut with several other “festival darlings” in which a promising young storyteller tries to examine their own grief, guilt, or trauma through the means of a “slice of life” story. While many of these indie films are quite charming in their personability, they generally lack the formal excellence that is needed to be seen as truly major works. Kaphar quickly proves himself to be an outlier with “Exhibiting Forgiveness,” which is in no small part due to the fact that the film is about the importance of utilizing visual language.

At the center of “Exhibiting Forgiveness” is a career-best performance from Andre Holland as Tarrell, an acclaimed painter fresh off the success of a recent showcase. Tarrell is undeniably dedicated to his craft,...

Exhibiting Forgiveness Director Shares the Personal Pain Behind His Film
Image
Art imitates life and thank goodness for that, we say, after experiencing the recent cinematic achievement of painter-turned-filmmaker Titus Kaphar. The internationally recognized artist has excavated his traumatic past via artistic expression over time, then took it a step further by enlisting top-tier actors to depict parts of his life on the big screen. MovieWeb spoke with Kaphar leading up to the release of Exhibiting Forgiveness, his hard-hitting new drama film starring Andr Holland and John Earl Jelks as a troubled son and father, respectively, marred by a traumatic past tied to abuse and drug addiction.

Holland portrays a talented painter who has found solace in art, decades after suffering at the hands of his tough father. Kaphar opened up to us about the unique process in bringing his personal story to life on film. "I started this project first as a documentary," Kaphar said, adding:

I went back to Michigan to visit my grandmother,...

New Film ‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’ Explores Family, Healing, and Spirituality
Titus Kaphar
Titus Kaphar’s first film as a director, “Exhibiting Forgiveness”, releases in theaters this Friday. The movie examines the themes of family relationships, making amends, and forgiveness. Kaphar draws from his own experiences for the story.

“Exhibiting Forgiveness” follows artist Tarrell, played by André Holland. Tarrell must deal with an unexpected visit from his estranged father La’Ron, portrayed by John Earl Jelks. La’Ron, a recovering addict, wants to repair their damaged bond. His arrival forces Tarrell to face past hurts and consider healing.

The film also stars Golden Globe nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as Tarrell’s mother Joyce, and singer Andra Day as his wife Aisha. Each actor brings depth to their complex roles in the family drama. Holland, known for movies like “Moonlight”, again shows his skill at portraying nuanced characters authentically.

Day, praised for roles promoting positive Black images, displays raw emotion as Aisha. She said making...

Andr Holland Reflects on the 'Profound Impact' of Selma 10 Years Later
Image
Sometimes a film production just captures lightning in a bottle, with everyone operating at their highest levels. It's the 10th anniversary of Ava DuVernay's Oscar-winning movie Selma, which certainly feels like one of those films. We spoke with Andr Holland recently about his role as a tortured painter in the newly released movie, Exhibiting Forgiveness. It's a groundbreaking achievement from writer-director Titus Kaphar, who is also an internationally recognized painter himself, and Holland is no stranger to groundbreaking films.

"I don't think I knew then how monumental... it would be. What I knew is that it was an important story," Holland told MovieWeb. "I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, and so, the Civil Rights Movement and that history was all around me, all the time. Andrew Young [who I portray] is someone who my mother actually didn't work directly for but worked, like, in connection with when she was a young woman in the movement.

Cannes Palme D’Or Winner & Awards Contender ‘Anora’ Debuts In Limited Release Kicking Off Season – Specialty Preview
Image
Neon opens Anora, its fifth consecutive Cannes Palm d’Or winner, in limited release this weekend — the highest-profile awards contender to hit theaters this awards season in a lively specialty weekend.

Sean Baker’s comedy debuts on six screens in New York and LA. The three NYC locations will be playing select screenings in the film’s original 35mm. Presales have been solid, and Neon will add San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and Toronto next week, expanding thereafter to wide release by mid-to-late November.

Anora, its ensemble cast of Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yuriy Borisov, Karren Karagulian and Vache Tovmasyan in a comic variation of a modern Cinderella story, play well with audiences. Critics have swooned over the film with a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score (see Deadline review), a similar trajectory to Neon’s 2019 Palme d’Or winner Parasite.

Baker, who also wrote the screenplay,...

Andre Holland: ‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’ is ‘inviting people to reconsider what healing looks like in their own lives’
Image
“Exhibiting Forgiveness,” which opened in limited release on October 18, tells a story inspired by the experiences of its writer-director, Titus Kaphar, but even though Andre Holland was playing a version of the filmmaker, Kaphar “wanted to make sure that we put a healthy distance between himself and the character.” That decision “freed me up, I think, to make some bigger choices and to do some things differently than they maybe happened in real life.” Still, “being directed by the cat that you’re playing, there is a different, added layer of pressure, not just in terms of getting his characterization right, but also in getting the relationships right.” Watch our complete video interview with Holland above.

The film follows Tarrell (Holland), a painter whose estranged father (John Earl Jelks) suddenly reenters his life. Tarrell’s mother (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) wants them to reconcile, but Tarrell resists. “He was raised in the...

For André Holland, ‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’ Felt Like It Was ‘Screaming to Exist’
Image
“Challenge” is a word that comes up a lot when talking to André Holland about his new film “Exhibiting Forgiveness.” It was a challenge learning how to paint at a level that would convince keen eyes he was a fitting surrogate for artist Titus Kaphar, who mined heavily from his own life to write and direct the Sundance premiere serving as his feature debut. It was a challenge digging deep into his emotions to play a painter dealing with the turmoil of his estranged father reentering his life, especially as Holland was in the process of saying goodbye to his own father. It was even a challenge getting cast as lead Tarrell in the first place, according to the actor.

“[Titus] said from the beginning, ‘There are other people who are interested, and there are other people who the powers that be are excited about, for maybe financial reasons or...

Exhibiting Forgiveness Review: Harrowing Drama Paints A Triggering Picture Of Generational Trauma
Image
This review was originally published during the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

An internationally esteemed painter, Titus Kaphar turned his talents to filmmaking in 2022. Considering film production as an extension of his painting, Kaphars filmmaking debut, Shut Up and Paint, was shortlisted at the 95th Academy Awards. Its no surprise that his timely and award-winning art has been featured in notable collections. Continuing the tradition of using his art to tell important stories, Kaphar brought his feature directorial debut, Exhibiting Forgiveness, to the Sundance Film Festival. The soulful and, at times, triggering film offers the beautiful message that generational trauma can indeed be broken.

‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’ Review: André Holland Brings Passion to This Raw Family Drama
Image
Celebrated painter Titus Kaphar lays down a gauntlet pretty early in his writing and directing debut, “Exhibiting Forgiveness,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival Saturday. André Holland plays Tarrell Rodin, a celebrated artist whose work looks just like Titus Kaphar’s (because Kaphar provided the paintings). He dismisses a recent critical rave because, positivity be damned, the critic didn’t understand what they were talking about. To Tarrell, it doesn’t matter what a critic likes if they don’t like it the right way.

“Exhibiting Forgiveness” is an impressive first feature, boldly conceived and emotionally fraught, with masterful performances and powerful works of art woven into the narrative. It’s a film that confronts the multigenerational impact of addiction and abuse, and the way art can be personally transformative and therapeutic, even though the artist may struggle to communicate directly with those around them. If I’m “wrong” about that,...

Box office preview: ‘Smile 2’ keeps spooky season alive with a second horror sequel in a row
Image
One hit horror sequel deserves another, and Art the Clown won’t be the only one smiling this weekend. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

Despite the huge success of Damien Leone‘s “Terrifier 3,” Art the Clown will have to deal with the fact there is likely to be an even bigger horror sequel this weekend as Paramount Pictures releases “Smile 2.” It’s the follow-up to the 2022 hit horror movie from filmmaker Parker Finn, which opened with $22.6 million on its way to $105.9 million domestic and $217 million worldwide. It should go without saying that October is the perfect month for a horror release, but oddly, the original “Smile” opened on September 30, then had sustained legs with smaller week-to-week drops. Other horror franchises that have dominated the month of October include the “Saw” and “Paranormal Activity” movies, both which saw huge bumps in business with their second chapters.

Exhibiting Forgiveness Review: A Stunning Portrait of Pain & Healing
Image
What can we forgive, and what can we forget? For internationally recognized artist Titus Kaphar, what started as a documentary project exploring said notions ultimately took shape as a groundbreaking narrative, starring a wildly talented cast to tell his personal story about coming to terms with a difficult past. Exhibiting Forgiveness is writer-director Kaphar's perfect title for his near-perfect film about an accomplished painter (Andr Holland) who's on the up-and-up career-wise, but whose world is thrown for a loop after an unexpected visit from his estranged father LA'Ron (John Earl Jelks). It's indeed based on Kaphar's own journey, and with the help of some of Hollywood's finest performers, this artistic new drama film will stick with you long after the credits roll.

With a Push from Spielberg, Artist Titus Kaphar Painted His Life on Screen in ‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’
Image
When artist Titus Kaphar began grappling with his anguished childhood, inspiration came from an unexpected source. A few years ago, actress Kate Capshaw, a portrait painter and collector, paid a visit to his studio. At the time, he was working on a series of large-scale canvases that would constitute Exhibiting Forgiveness, his new show at Gagosian in Beverly Hills through Nov. 2. Looking around at the nostalgic images of his childhood, often employing deconstructive techniques of cutting out figures, Capshaw asked what the paintings were about. That’s when Kaphar handed her an autobiographical screenplay with the same title.

“She read it and called me and said, ‘Do you mind if I show this to Steven?’ She was referring to her husband, Steven Spielberg,” Kaphar recalls. “A few days later she called back and said, ‘He wants to talk to you.’ Kaphar — whose 2022 documentary short, Shut Up and Paint, was shortlisted...

Working With André Holland Was on Andra Day’s Bucket List Before Filming ‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’
Image
After portraying a negligent, demon-possessed mom in The Deliverance, Andra Day will be back onscreen in a more protective motherly role in Exhibiting Forgiveness, the directorial debut from artist Titus Kaphar, set for theatrical release Oct. 18.

In the film, which draws from Kaphar’s lived experience, Day plays Aisha, a singer-songwriter and the wife of André Holland’s Tarrell Rodin, a revered painter and father who’s forced to face unhealed wounds. Then his estranged father, La’Ron (John Earl Jelks), a recovering addict, unexpectedly reappears and attempts to repair their relationship at the urging of Rodin’s mother Joyce (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor).

At Thursday’s L.A. premiere for the film, which debuted at Sundance earlier this year, Day talked to The Hollywood Reporter about her “bucket list” experience working with Holland.

“I miss him so bad right now; I call him ‘bestie,’ that’s my best friend,” Day said...

Mel Gibson's Mark Wahlberg-Starring Movie Flight Risk Gets Release Delay
Image
Lionsgate has moved Mel Gibson 's highly anticipated suspense thriller Flight Risk back to 2025. The film, starring Mark Wahlberg , Michelle Dockery, and Topher Grace, was originally scheduled to be released on October 18, 2024, but the studio chose to delay the release further into next year, setting its theatrical debut for January 24, 2025.

Previously, the film was supposed to contend with the eagerly anticipated Smile 2, Sean Baker's Anora, and Titus Kaphar's Exhibiting Forgiveness, but since Flight Risk won't be released until January, it will compete at the box office with low-budget horror Screamboat and the thriller Inheritance.

Flight Risk, directed by Mel Gibson and written by Jared Rosenberg, has been in development for a little over four years, since the writer's screenplay appeared on that year's "Black List" as one of the most popular unproduced scripts. The project finally moved forward when Davis Entertainment, the producers of Prey and Predator,...

Sundance Gem ‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’ Sets October Release Date
Image
IndieWire can exclusively announce that Titus Kaphar’s “Exhibiting Forgiveness,” an intense family drama that wowed audiences at Sundance and NYC’s New Directors/New Films this year, will be getting a wide release by distributor Roadside Attractions on October 18, 2024.

Starring André Holland, Andra Day, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and John Earl Jelks, Kaphar’s feature directorial debut takes inspiration from the world-renowned painter turned filmmaker’s real life.

As Tarrell, Holland navigates the challenge of reconnecting with his addict father La’Ron, played by Jelks, after he has reached success as an artist. Oscar nominee Ellis-Taylor plays Tarell’s mother Joyce, who had her own issues with La’Ron that caused them to split, but is more willing to forgive. Meanwhile, Aisha, Tarrell’s musician wife played by fellow Oscar nominee Day, falls more in line with the stance that Tarell and his father might be better off with no contact between them.

Bradley Cooper Didn’t Like Script Changes To ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’
Image
Bradley Cooper almost quit The Place Beyond the Pines.

During Indiewire’s Screen Talk live at the New Directors/New Films festival, writer/director Derek Cianfrance — who co-wrote the feature with future Sound of Metal director Darius Marder — said Cooper didn’t like what he read after receiving an updated script. That’s because Marder and Cianfrance rewrote “every word.”

Cooper hated the changes to his character, a police officer who kills an empathetic thief (Ryan Gosling) midway through the 2013 film.

“I had given [Darius Marder] the script and he had a lot of notes for it, and I kind of agreed with a lot of what he was saying. And so we rewrote every word from 10 weeks to six weeks,” Cianfrance said. “I remember giving Bradley Cooper the copy of ‘The Place Beyond the Pines,’ the new script, and getting a voice message from him saying, ‘Bro, I just want to...

‘Blue Valentine’ Writer/Director Derek Cianfrance Was Convinced the Script Was ‘Cursed’ for More Than a Decade
Image
The intensely poetic dark passion behind “Blue Valentine” seeped into even its road to the big screen, according to writer/director Derek Cianfrance.

During IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” live at the New Directors/New Films festival, presented by Film at Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art, Cianfrance told podcast co-hosts Ryan Lattanzio and Anne Thompson that he believed the project itself was “cursed” for more than a decade due to its stalled production process. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams eventually were cast as an ill-fated married couple struggling to maintain their love across years together.

Cianfrance began writing the script for the Oscar-nominated feature while at Sundance 1998 after the premiere of his debut film “Brother Tied.” It took him 12 years and 66 script drafts until “Blue Valentine” was finally released in 2010.

“For ‘Blue Valentine,’ I spent so many years [on it]. People said, ‘Just make the movie,'” Cianfrance said. “For me on that movie,...

Bradley Cooper Almost Quit ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ After Script Changes
Image
Bradley Cooper almost bowed out of “The Place Beyond the Pines.”

Writer/director Derek Cianfrance, who co-wrote the feature with future “Sound of Metal” director Darius Marder, revealed during IndieWire’s Screen Talk live at the New Directors/New Films festival that Academy Award-nominated Cooper wavered after receiving an updated script.

Cianfrance brought writer Marder onboard to help rewrite “every word” of “The Place Beyond the Pines” shortly before shooting began. According to Cianfrance, actor Cooper was less than pleased with the updates to his character, a police officer who kills an empathetic thief (Ryan Gosling) midway through the decade-spanning 2013 film.

“I had given [Darius Marder] the script and he had a lot of notes for it, and I kind of agreed with a lot of what he was saying. And so we rewrote every word from 10 weeks to six weeks,” Cianfrance said during Screen Talk live, co-hosted by Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio.
