‘Bono: Stories of Surrender’ Review: The U2 Legend Finds What He’s Looking for in a Captivating Film of His One-Man Show
Image
I’d love to see Mick Jagger do a one-man show, looking back over his life with the Rolling Stones and his private life without them. Jagger has always been a witty and observant raconteur, and he must have a zillion stories that could singe our eyebrows. Bruce Springsteen’s one-man show, “Springsteen on Broadway,” which opened in 2017, was often bracing, because Springsteen seized the chance to present sides of himself that undercut his image — like the fact that after all his turmoil-of-the-working-man rock ‘n’ roll songs, he is someone who had never even set foot in a factory.

But in “Bono: Stories of Surrender,” the handsomely shot black-and-white film that’s been made of the U2 frontman’s 2022 solo stage show, we watch as Bono tells the story of his life and takes us inside his ambition, his passion, his celebrity, his charity, and his family demons. And while...

‘Bono: Stories Of Surrender’ Review: U2 Frontman Reveals Tales Of Love And Loss In Funny, Poignant, Diverting Documentary
Image
U2’s Bono is seen as a successor to a very small fraternity of world-conquering rock stars – the likes of Springsteen, Jagger and Bowie. He’s less recognized as a successor to a literary tradition: the Irish pantheon of Joyce, Yeats, Beckett, Heaney, and O’Brien.

But his impressive gift of language shines in the new documentary Bono: Stories of Surrender, directed by Andrew Dominik, which just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Special Screenings section.

“I was born with an eccentric heart,” he notes wryly near the beginning of the film – an iteration of his one-man show at New York’s Beacon Theatre, which in turn grew out of his 2022 memoir, Bono: 40 Songs, One Story. The lovely “eccentric heart” line gestures to an inherited condition that would almost cost him his life: He underwent emergency aortic valve-replacement surgery in 2016. That near-death experience in his mid-50s seems...

Nonetheless, the separated couple has been the subject of tabloid fodder for the past few days, and the conversation is still ongoing.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star has filed for divorce from Pk, shutting down any hopes of a reconciliation.

The filing came a few hours after he was snapped by paparazzi getting cozy with a Dorit lookalike.

The 57-year-old was on a date with the blonde beauty, later discovered to be former The Amazing Race contestant Shana Wall.

Photos showed the duo locking lips on the sidewalk after leaving New York hotspot Cipriani’s.

The images were plastered all over the blogs and seemed to have been the final straw for Dorit.

Dorit Kemsley’s estranged husband Pk spotted kissing mystery blonde
Image
If you were holding out hope for a reconciliation between Dorit Kemsley and her husband, Paul “Pk” Kemsley, it seems that ship has sailed.

Pk has already moved on and was recently spotted kissing a mystery blonde during a night out in Los Angeles.

Dorit talked about their separation during The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 14 reunion and confessed there was little hope of them getting back together.

Things got nasty between the former couple throughout the season as Dorit proclaimed to the world that her husband was an alcoholic.

At one point, she also told her castmates that he was a bad father to their kids, Jagger and Phoenix.

Pk was invited to the Season 14 reunion but turned down the request, seemingly wiping his hands clean of the show and of Dorit.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Level Up at Brooklyn Arena Rock Concert

Look at him now: Nick Cave’s transforming. He’s vibrating. He’s glowing. He’s flying. Look at him now.

At Thursday night’s Bad Seeds concert at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, Cave proved to a U.S. audience what Europe has known for decades: that he — rock’s gothic poet laureate, master of emotional intimacy, and, as a side hustle, introspective advice columnist — is indeed an arena rocker. He’s attempted that feat in the States before, staging a brilliant and occasionally heartrending concert at the same venue...

Ryan Edwards Apologizes to Son for Being a Total Deadbeat Dad
Image
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Has Ryan Edwards truly turned over a new, responsible leaf?

This question has been posed about the reality star many times over the years, of course.

However, Edwards seemingly took a major step in a very positive direction on the April 17 episode of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter… as the 37-year-old had a honest conversation with his and ex Maci Bookout’s 16-year-old son, Bentley.

(Instagram)

To put it bluntly, Edwards has been an absentee parent for a majority of this child’s life.

The MTV personality has been arrested on numerous occasions and checked into rehab more than once to battle substance abuse issues.

Via a court filing from earlier this year, there’s actually an official record of just how little time Ryan spends with his kids.

But perhaps the past will Not be prologue in his case?

Hamrick herself confirmed the quietly significant step in a recent interview with Paris Match, revealing that the proposal actually occurred “two or three years” ago.

The couple, who navigate a striking 44-year age difference, first connected in 2014 during a Rolling Stones tour stop in Japan, where Hamrick was traveling with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre. Their relationship blossomed, and in 2016, they welcomed their son, Deveraux, who is Jagger’s eighth child.

Hans Zimmer Goes for ‘All the Heavy Ones’ in the Criterion Closet, Including ‘Night and Fog’ and ‘Performance’
Image
Entering what he described as “the Vatican of film,” composer Hans Zimmer decided to take a more solemn approach to his selections in the Criterion Closet. Pouring over the options, the Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve collaborator chose to recognize a fair amount of dark choices, starting with war film “The Battle of Algiers,” then moving on to Holocaust documentary “Night and Fog.”

“Oh, God, I went for all the heavy ones, didn’t I?” Zimmer said. “‘Night and Fog.’ The film that, to me, in its most unflinching way, describes the Third Reich, the Holocaust, and the concentration camps. So you have to have strong nerves to go and watch this one.”

Another bleak pick, Zimmer went on to grab Andrei Tarkovsky’s biographical drama “Andrei Rublev,” which uses the story of the 15th century artist to craft an intricate portrait of medieval Russia.

“Favorite film my whole life long.

10 Darkest Yu-Gi-Oh! Gx Storylines, Ranked
Image
It may be an anime franchise primarily targeted toward kids, but Yu-Gi-Oh!can get shockingly dark. Different seasons have tackled a variety of mature themes, and death — and fates worse than death — are commonly faced by both heroes and villains. Despite seeming bright and cheerful on the surface, Yu-Gi-Oh! Gx gets darker than any other installment in the franchise.

Following its first season, which is intentionally outlandish and goofy, Yu-Gi-Oh! Gx grows increasingly bleak and depressing. Throughout his four years at Duel Academy, series protagonist Jaden Yuki is exposed to cults, abuse, betrayal, mass amounts of death, and more. The darkest aspects of the anime all concern Jaden himself, as the trauma he suffers defines the later seasons of the series.

Inside Vanity Fair’s Oscar Party With Winners, Billionaires, Rock Royalty and a Teary Jenna Ortega

Oscar night is all about timing.

The challenge is getting it right. You want to be at the best party when it’s peaking (or before), planted in place while the vibes are strong and the crowd remains peppered with people holding 8.5-pound golden statues, and bolting before you’re among the final few on the dance floor in order to catch a wave to the next best thing on Hollywood’s biggest night.

Journalists, like this one, are only allowed inside a handful of Oscar night events, a fact that fortunately helps to keep a hot schedule. There’s the requisite stop at the Academy’s post-show Governors Ball, the Elton John AIDS Foundation viewing party or Vanity Fair. The more exclusive invites — Madonna and Guy Oseary’s The Party or Beyoncé and Jay Z’s Gold Party, for instance — are press free zones. The late-night bashes offer A-listers,...

Bob Dylan was reportedly invited to present and perform at the Oscars
Image
It wasn’t a joke.

During Sunday’s Oscars, Rolling Stones legend Mick Jagger presented Best Song to “El Mal” from Emilia Pérez. However, before announcing the winner, Jagger joked that he was the second choice for the category as Oscar producers originally asked Bob Dylan to attend. “The producers wanted Bob Dylan to do it, but Bob didn’t want to,” Jagger said before mock-quoting Dylan. “The best songs this year are obviously in A Complete Unknown.’ You should find somebody younger.’ Ok, I’m younger than Bob! So here I am.”

As it turns out, Jagger was being serious. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dylan was asked to present and perform during the ceremony but turned down the offer.

Jagger wasn’t the only person to reference Dylan, the subject of the Oscar-nominated film A Complete Unknown. During his monologue, host Conan O’Brien said that Dylan wanted to...

Camille On Music “As A Force For Good And Progress” As El Mal From ‘Emilia Pérez’ Takes Best Original Song

“We are so grateful,” said Camille, letting out a great “whoo hoo” as she and Clément Ducol accepted the Oscar for Best Original Song for El Mal in Emilia Pérez. “We wrote El Mal as a song to denounce corruption and we hope it speaks to the role that music and art can play and continue to play as a force of the good and progress in the world.”

The pair wrote the music and, in a rare occurrence, shared the lyric credit with Jacques Audiard, director of the much-nominated Netflix musical crime drama

Ducol and Camille are also up for Best Original Score for Emilia Pérez. Saldana, who performs with Karla Sofía Gascón, just won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

‘El Mal’ Triumphs in Oscars’ Best Original Song Category to Give ‘Emilia Perez’ a Win
Image
“El Mal,” the show-stopping number sung by Zoe Saldaña in Netflix’s “Emilia Perez,” won the best song Oscar Sunday night for French songwriters Camille and Clément Ducol and their co-writer, the film’s director Jacques Audiard.

Later in the evening, English composer Daniel Blumberg won the original score Oscar for his music for Brady Corbet’s epic “The Brutalist.”

The song “El Mal,” in Audiard’s operatic drama, is a three-minute tour de force for Saldaña as lawyer Rita Castro, a fantasy in which she dances around a room filled with the rich and powerful, decrying the hypocrisy of those responsible for the murders of thousands of Mexicans during the drug wars.

Mick Jagger introduced the category, taking the stage to the strains of the Rolling Stones’ 1968 classic “Sympathy for the Devil.”

After thanking the audience and saying how pleased he was to present the award, he said, “Much as I love doing it,...

Image
Exclusive: Shirley MacLaine wailed during her acceptance speech when she won her Oscar back in 1984 for Terms of Endearment, “I’m gonna cry because this show has been as long as my career!”

Spare a thought for three of this year’s Best Actress nominees, Demi Moore, Karla Sofia Gascón and Mickey Madison, because for them, awards season has been running since last May when their movies, The Substance, Emilia Pérez and Anora, respectively, debuted at the Cannes Film Festival.

“It’s been nearly a year,” Moore tells me helpfully, when we meet at the annual Charles Finch/Chanel pre-Oscars soirée in the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Her face is a genuine picture of joy, that’s the word. “I am joyful,” she smiles.

“My mind and spirit is great,” Moore continues. “But my body says, ‘F— you.'”

In a phrase, Moore encapsulates a sentiment I...

Here’s Why General Hospital’s Pcpd Has Become The Keystone Cops
Image
What is going on at the Port Charles Police Department on General Hospital? Their actions have not always made sense, but lately they have been ridiculous.

Not Even Trying

A cold-blooded murder took place in Port Charles. It remains unsolved, and the Pcpd is not even trying to find out who did it. John Cates (Adam J. Harrington) was a terrible person (which was a shame because the old Jagger wasn’t). The way he was torturing Kristina (Kate Mansi) was unconscionable, but that doesn’t mean it is ok to shoot him at point-blank range, which is exactly what Sonny (Maurice Benard) did.

The Pcpd arrested Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) for the crime, and she actually went to prison but was eventually released because she was innocent. Then, the whole matter was dropped. It’s almost as if it never happened. Sonny got away with murder, and it wasn’t the first time.

Mick Jagger’s Cult Classic Acting Debut ‘Performance’ Gets Criterion Release
Image
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission.

The musician-to-actor pipeline is nothing new, but few films are as notorious as Performance, the Mick Jagger vehicle that was so appalling to Warner Bros. that they shelved it for 18 months. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll are just the start — the gritty gangster flick has plenty of violence, too.

In the intervening half-century since its release it’s become a cult classic, and to certify its film buff bona fides,...

The Sixties and Seventies were nothing if not for rock and roll. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bob Dylan, and Led Zeppelin defined the era that played a major role in the evolution of music. Among the many names that colored the tabloids and media headlines was Marianne Faithfull, a British singer and actress who achieved immense popularity when her single As Tears Go By hit the UK Top 5 in the 1960s. However, it was her turbulent 4-year relationship with The Rolling Stones frontman and founder Mick Jagger that went down in the history books.

So Long, Marianne Faithfull: The Woman Who Refused to Go Quietly
Image
Here’s a toast to Marianne Faithfull, a true rock & roll legend. Nobody was ever better at being an old rock star, except maybe Leonard Cohen. Yet the difference is that Cohen didn’t release his debut album until he was 33 — he was never young in public. Faithfull was a Sixties dolly bird who was on Top of the Pops in her teens, singing “As Tears Go By,” just another disposable pop ingenue. She played Ophelia in the 1970 film version of Hamlet, a hauntingly tragic performance, at a time when...

Marianne Faithfull in Film: She Worked with Godard, Played Ophelia, and Starred in the First X-Rated Movie
Image
Marianne Faithfull, the iconic English singer and songwriter who first appeared in the mid-1960s, then returned after years of personal problems, including heroin addiction and homelessness, with her masterful 1979 album “Broken English,” died surrounded by her family at her London home on January 30. Though known mainly for her music, in the late 1960s she embarked on a career as a film actress (best known for “The Girl on a Motorcycle”) that was cut short by turmoil in her life. She was 78.

Best known initially for “As Tears Go By” in 1964 when she was only 17 (the song was co-written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards) her father was a career military man and intelligence officer and Italian literature professor, her mother from Austrian-Hungarian nobility. She was initially discovered by Andrew Loog Oldham, the Rolling Stones’ manager.

She quickly fell in with the Stones (eventually becoming Jagger’s lover and sometime...

Alain Delon and Marianne Faithfull in The Girl on a Motorcycle (1968)
From Godard to Coppola, Van Sant to Anger, Marianne Faithfull was a dazzling magnet for film-makers
Alain Delon and Marianne Faithfull in The Girl on a Motorcycle (1968)
The music star was also an electrifying screen presence, from The Girl on a Motorcycle to Marie Antoinette

Marianne Faithfull, singular icon of British pop, dies aged 78Marianne Faithfull was a towering artist, not just the muse she was painted as

On the screen and also in life, Marianne Faithfull experienced something similar to her contemporary Anita Pallenberg – the condescension of being treated like an icon or a muse. Maybe her very real success in music ruled her out of a serious acting career in the eyes of some, but Faithfull for a while occupied the epicentre of the late-60s pop culture zeitgeist, for an intense flashbulb moment she found herself in the overlapping worlds of music, movies and the explodingly important world of celebrity itself.

The famous photograph of her in 1967 on a couch between Alain Delon and Mick Jagger absolutely captures her magnetism: Delon is entranced by her,...

Marianne Faithfull, English Singer, Dead at 78
Image
Legendary English singer Marianne Faithfull has died at the age of 78.

According to a statement from her family, Faithfull “passed away peacefully” on Thursday, January 30th. A cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

A defining voice of the 1960s, Faithfull first rose to fame with the song “As Tears Go By,” which was written for her by The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. She proceeded to release several more hit singles throughout the decade, but her career became largely overshadowed by her tumultuous personal life, which included a high-profile relationship with Jagger and battles with addiction. Several of The Rolling Stones’ songs were apparently inspired by Jagger and Faithfull’s relationship, including “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” “Wild Horses,” and “Sister Morphine.”

Jagger remembered Faithfull in a statement released shortly after her passing, writing: “She was so much part of my life for so long.

Nine Rock Star Memoirs We Hope to Read One Day

Back in the Eighties and Nineties, the release of a major rock star memoir was a fairly uncommon event. Noteworthy ones like George Harrison’s I, Me, Mine (1980), Iggy Pop’s I Need More (1982), and David Lee Roth’s Crazy From the Heat (1997) popped up every once in a while, but it wasn’t until the 2000s that this genre started making regular appearances on The New York Times bestseller list, thanks to landmark works like Anthony Kiedis’ Scar Tissue, Bob Dylan’s Chronicles: Volume One, Eric Clapton’s The Autobiography,...
