My Spy: The Eternal City is a spy action comedy film directed by Peter Segal from a screenplay co-written by Erich Hoeber, Jon Hoeber, and Segal. The 2024 film serves as a sequel to the 2020 film My Spy, and it picks up the story of JJ and Sophie a couple of years later after the events of My Spy. Sophie is now a teenager and she wants some freedom from JJ’s daily strict routine. During a trip to Italy, Sophie and JJ try to prevent a nuclear attack on the Vatican City. Review: My Spy originally debuted at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic after being pulled from release in August 2019. With mediocre reviews, the Dave Bautista-led action-comedy was solid family entertainment when audiences sorely needed new things to watch. Four years later, Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman have reunited for a sequel that is bigger and better than the original but still nowhere near as good as it should be.

The James Bond jetpack sequence in “Thunderball” (1965) was a cheesy-awesome thing that was like, “Whoa! The future will be jetpacks!” “My Spy the Eternal City” opens like a Bond film, or maybe a movie whose goal is to make the “Kingsman” series look weighty. Dave Bautista’s JJ, a former Special Forces soldier turned CIA operative, is on a private plane, where he’s playing bodyguard to a teen idol named Ryan (Bill Barratt). Out of the blue, he’s attacked by the flight attendant. As they go at each other with sharp objects, a helmeted figure zips through the sky in a jetpack, placing a bomb on one of the plane’s windows and blowing a hole in its side; everyone comes tumbling out, and a plunging-to-the-earth scuffle ensues.

Peter Segal’s completely disposable 2020 action comedy My Spy was an entry into the microgenre featuring a strongman action star playing bodyguard to an irascible child. The film’s sequel, My Spy the Eternal City, embraces the equally hoary clichés of comedies revolving around stepparents, with Dave Bautista’s C.I.A. operative JJ adjusting to domesticity with the now-teenaged Sophie (Chloe Coleman) and her mother, Kate (Parisa Fitz-Henley), while struggling to relate to the girl as a parent and not merely a protector.

My Spy was a fun family comedy that landed on Amazon Prime in 2020 after being delayed by the events of that year. It also made the cover of one of our junior magazines too. It was the third most watched streaming film of the year after Hamilton on Disney+ and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm on Prime Video.

My Spy: The Eternal City is casting up as it heads toward a production start date this month and has added Anna Faris, Craig Robinson and Flula Borg to the franchise. Director Pete Segal is returning to helm the sequel, which reunites franchise stars Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman alongside scene-stealers Kristen Schaal and Ken Jeong.

The follow-up concerns a now teenage Sophie (Coleman) convincing JJ (Bautista) to chaperone her school choir trip to Italy where they both unwittingly end up pawns in an international terrorist plot targeting CIA chief David Kim (Jeong) and his son, Collin – who’s also Sophie’s best friend.
