Daniel Kandell is a screenwriter, director and producer of independent documentaries. Since 2003 he has worked with the Guanajuato International Film Festival (GIFF), where he helped develop, launch and oversee the "Identity and Belonging" Documentary Program. During this program's first six editions, Daniel served as both Executive Producer and consultant on 36 short documentaries that went onto compete in various international film festivals, including "Bajo las brasas" (2015), which was selected as part of the Short Film Program for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.
Daniel has specialized in Talent Relations and International Relations for various film festivals worldwide, including the Doha Tribeca Film Festival in Qatar, the Cartagena de Indias International Film Festival in Colombia, the El Gouna Film Festival and the Cairo International Film Festival in Egypt, the Transilvania International Film Festival in Romania, as well as GIFF in Mexico. Over the years Daniel has hosted such talents as Susan Sarandon, Nicolas Cage, Owen Wilson, Ethan Coen, Oliver Stone, Tim Burton, Spike Lee, Danny Boyle, Darren Aronofsky, Robert De Niro, Salma Hayek, Kevin Spacey, Guillermo Arriaga, Peter Greenaway, Lucrecia Martel, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Larry Clark, Kim Ki-duk, Gaspar Noé, Spike Jonze, Park Chan-wook, Anton Corbijn, Roger Corman, Bong Joon-ho, Fatih Akin, Peter Weir, Gus Van Sant and Terry Gilliam, to name just a few.
Daniel recently co-directed and produced his debut feature length documentary titled "On the Road to San Juan" (2020) about a nine-day pilgrimage from San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato to San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco; a tradition that dates back nearly 400 years and annually attracts over seven million pilgrims, making it one of the most important religious sites in Mexico. Daniel is currently co-directing and producing his sophomore feature documentary about renegade chef Donnie Masterton.
