"I need new butts to kick!!" Paramount+ has revealed a quick teaser for their upcoming animated spin-off series titled Tales of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, set to launch sometime this summer. This is a continuation of the massively successful animated movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem from last year, one of my favorites as well. Set after the events of the 2023 movie, the Turtles emerge from the sewers and onto the streets of New York, where they are faced with new threats & team up with old allies, to navigate through teenage life and villains in the city. The Turtles must deal with their new life as heroes while also dealing with the pressures of going to high school in New York City. Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, and Brady Noon reprise their roles from the film as the Turtles, alongside Ayo Edebiri reprising her role as April O'Neil.

Here’s some cowabunga-worthy news: the heroes in a half-shell will officially be back. One of the greatest cinematic delights of 2023 was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem – the all-action animated adventure from director Jeff Rowe and writer-producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, which dared to make the teenage turtles actual teenagers, and doused the entire affair in a distinctive fuzzy-pencil art style and ‘90s hip-hop hits to boot. It was a moderate hit at the box office and received a raft of positive reviews – and now a sequel is officially confirmed.
As unveiled in a Paramount release slate, the follow-up to Mutant Mayhem is underway, and expected to release on 9 October 2026. Director Jeff Rowe is expected to return, and it seems like the four turtle actors – Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu and Brady Noon – and April O’Neal vocal star Ayo Edebiri will follow suit. As teased...

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been around since the ‘80s. They’ve starred in several animated TV series, live-action movies from Jim Henson costumes to CGI turtles, and two animated films. The latest, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, reinvents the comic book heroes in several ways.
Perhaps taking a cue from the Spider-Verse movies, Mutant Mayhem uses an animation style that is not a straightforward depiction of its world. You can tell it’s New York and there are turtles and other mutants, but the animation combines styles like teenage sketchbooks to create a livelier viewing experience.
The film sticks to the turtles’ origins, mutated by green ooze along with their father figure, the rat named Splinter. The experiments by scientist Baxter Stockman (voice of Giancarlo Esposito) led to the creation of some familiar mutants like Bebop (Seth Rogen) and Rocksteady (John Cena), along with some new...

If you’re an adolescent humanoid arachnid martial artist – a hero in a half shell, some kind of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle – then few names will strike fear into your heart like Shredder. Which is why, when making this summer’s animated favourite :a[Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-mutant-mayhem/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}, director Jeff Rowe ultimately decided not to pitch his four young heroes against Shredder immediately. “Shredder used to be the main villain before we pivoted away from that,” he tells Empire, reasoning: “They saved Joker for :a[The Dark Knight]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/dark-knight-review/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}.”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem writers Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Jeff Rowe said it was important that their turtles spoke like real teenagers. That meant brushing up on the latest crazes, like TikTok.
“We’re trying to make these ninja turtles sound like you and talk like you and reference the same TikTok videos that you watch that I’ve never seen that I don’t understand at all,” Rogen said on a panel for the film at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles. “I don’t know who the Ocky guy is but apparently the Ocky guy is hilarious. Tell him you love bacon egg and cheese and that’s a whole thing.”
Though the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics have been adapted as a weekday afternoon TV show, live-action movies in the ‘90s and 2010s, and a 2007 animated movie, Mutant Mayhem is the first incarnation to cast teenagers.

As a lifelong fan of the Ninja Turtles franchise, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem writer-director Jeff Rowe knew that this film would be a gateway for a new generation of people. Along with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Rowe crafted a new look and story to connect with a new audience who may have never heard of the Ninja Turtles before.
The film follows the four teen Turtles – Leonardo (Nicolas Cantu), Raphael (Brady Noon), Michelangelo (Shamon Brown Jr.) and Donatello (Micah Abbey) – as they long to be a part of the human world. In an attempt to be accepted by the humans living above them, the Turtles, along with their human friend April (Ayo Edebiri), hunt for a mysterious crime syndicate but soon learn they aren’t the only mutants living in New York City.

Earlier this week, Paramount Pictures’ animated “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” crossed the $100 million mark at the box office, becoming the 18th movie of 2023 to reach that milestone domestically, but also, the final one of the summer.
Directed by Jeff Rowe (“The Mitchells vs. the Machines”), the movie was the brainchild of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who wrote it with Rowe plus Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit. It featured a quartet of young newcomers voicing the heroic reptiles — Micah Abbey (Donatello), Shamon Brown Jr. (Michelangelo), Nicolas Cantu (Leonardo) and Brady Noon (Raphael) — in addition to Jackie Chan, Ice Cube, Ayo Edebiri, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Paul Rudd, Rogen and more.

Almost 40 years after their creation (and nearly as long since the last time a real-life teenager declared "Cowabunga!" without a trace of irony), the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have gained a whole new lease on life thanks to "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem." The critically acclaimed animated film (you can read Rafael Motamayor's own glowing review for /Film here) follows in the footsteps of hits like "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" and "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" by eschewing visual realism in favor of creating its own uniquely hyperrealistic style. It also helps that "Mutant Mayhem" fully embraces the "Teenage" component of the franchise by casting actual teenagers to voice its heroes in a half-shell and allowing them to play off each other in real-time by recording their lines together.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" may have just arrived in theaters, but it's already being considered one of the best "Tmnt" films in the entire franchise. With a flashy animation style, a fantastic reimagining of the Turtles' origin story, and a stellar voice cast of actual teenagers, "Mutant Mayhem" has absolutely everything going for it. Not only was the creative team behind the film wise to cast actual teen actors instead of becoming yet another studio animated film plagued by the trend of celebrity stunt casting, but they also elected to record all of the Turtles' tracks together in the same room. This gave the film a frenetic, palpable energy that would not have been replicated by adults in private booths. Indeed, "Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem" brings the same rambunctious sensation of being thrown in the middle of a pizza party in the middle of summer break.

The animators of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem were taken care of by not being overworked. Director Jeff Rowe and producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg made sure the staff could work on the animated movie while continuing to maintain a good work-life balance.
“That was the thing that was really important to us on this film, and I learned it from Seth and Evan because in getting to know Seth, I’m like, ‘He has a really good work-life balance and everyone at Point Gray does,'” Rowe said in an interview with Insider. “And I asked him about that and he is like, ‘Well, we’re like when you’re doing live-action, sometimes you’re on a set for 40 days in a row and it is exhausting and tiring. And we want to make sure that our people have time away from that and that it doesn’t become their entire lives.

Fans of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" might be surprised to learn that April O'Neil, the Turtles' brave and plucky reporter friend, started her existence as a scientist and lab assistant. The character was first introduced in 1984 as a computer programmer who worked for Baxter Stockman, an engineer who built specialized robots that could burrow into bank vaults. April eventually gave Stockman the slip and was rescued by the Turtles. She opened up an antique shop and later retired to a farmhouse in Massachusetts. At no point during these adventures was she a journalist.
It wouldn't be until the 1987 "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" animated series that April (Renae Jacobs) would become a reporter, often investigating otherworldly phenomena and alerting the sewer-bound adolescents to any interdimensional or criminal malfeasance. In the animated series, April was rarely seen without a banana-yellow jumpsuit, a look that eventually became a hallmark of the character. In the 1990 live-action feature film,...

The summer box office season may have reached the dog days of August, but it’s hardly looked stronger over the past few months. Though the openings of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” and “Meg 2: The Trench” won’t be able to take down “Barbie” as the top performer in North America, both new releases are boosting theaters to a weekend with four different features grossing north of $25 million.
Paramount Pictures’ “Mutant Mayhem” added $9.3 million from 3,858 locations on Friday, tracking neck-and-neck with “Oppenheimer” for second place on domestic charts. The animated feature, produced by Nickelodeon Movies and Point Grey Productions, opened with Tuesday evening preview screenings and is now tracking for a $42 million five-day debut — squarely within the projections of $35 million to $45 million heading into the weekend.
That’s not shabby for the “Tmnt” entry, which cost only $70 million to produce — an especially economical figure for an animated studio release.

When CG animation began to take hold following the release of Toy Story, there was a period where a lot of the movies looked quite similar. Little by little, the various animation studios added their own stylistic flourishes, but it wasn’t until the release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse were it felt like there was a real mainstream departure from the previous style. Since the success of Spider-Verse, we’ve seen more animated movies embrace a unique style, including the recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
While speaking with THR, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem director Jeff Rowe credited Spider-Verse with giving them more confidence in their style. “The first Spider-Verse really opened a lot of doors,” Rowe said. “It really made it okay for studios to take chances on a film looking unique and maybe having a little bit more sophistication and emotional maturity in its storytelling.

One of the more striking details of Jeff Rowe's new animated film "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" is that -- for the first time in the franchise's decades-long history -- the central turtles are actually played by teenage actors. Micah Abbey, who played Donatello, was only 15 at the time of recording. Brady Noon (Raphael) was only 16, while Nicolas Cantu (Leonard) and Shamon Brown, Jr. (Michelangelo) were only 17 or 18. The filmmakers also insisted that the four lead actors all be allowed to record their lines together, capturing a certain kind of sloppy spontaneity that only real teenagers possess.
In animation, younger characters -- especially those on long-running TV shows -- are typically played by adults, usually adult women. Bart Simpson, as we all might know, has been 10 years old for 35 years, and is played by actor Nancy Cartwright. Bobby Hill from "King of the Hill" was played by Pamela Adlon.

The Ninja Turtles are back in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem," an animated film from director Jeff Rowe and producer Seth Rogen. By every measure it's a successful reboot of the beloved property that will keep youngsters and animation enthusiasts entertained. Fans of the original comic books and animated series from the '80s might notice changes to certain aspects of the characters -- "Mutant Mayhem" is more of a character-driven comedy than an action film, with a powerful message about acceptance. I, for one, wanted a bit more ninja madness, but still walked away satisfied.
Regardless of any reservations about the picture, plenty of fun Easter eggs sprinkled throughout pay homage to previous iterations that should satisfy those needing a nostalgia kick. Some are easy to spot, while others require sharp eyes and some brain power. What's clear is that...

When director Jeff Rowe (co-director of “The Mitchells vs. the Machines”) and producer Seth Rogen (“Sausage Party”) first talked about making their animated “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” edgier and scarier than the rest of the beloved franchise, they both seized on “Jurassic Park” as a touchstone.
“One of my favorite movies as a kid was ‘Jurassic Park,’ and I saw that when I was seven in a theater because I love dinosaurs,” Rowe told IndieWire. “And the opening of that film is terrifying — it scared the shit out of me. I was crying and immediately wanted to leave the theater, but I stayed through it all. It successfully established the Raptors as one of the coolest villains ever, and it established a world where bad things could happen.
“Seth had a similar experience and he said a great thing: ‘Jurassic Park’ is like a monster movie for kids.

Ice Cube loved playing villainous Superfly in the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’ film as he felt there were “no rules”. The 54-year-old rapper and actor added the human-sized fly character in the newly-released animation – who says his dad created the crime-fighting turtles by dumping toxic waste down a sewer – is a street-wise “king of New York”-style character. He told Capital Xtra’s ‘Evenings with Omah Howard’ radio show: “Playing a villain is great – there are no rules playing a villain so it was just fun to be able to let loose. “Superfly is the king of New York – everybody knows his name in the streets. “Nothing happens in New York without going through Superfly or it’s gonna be a problem.” Ice – real name O'Shea Jackson Sr – stars alongside Seth Rogen, 41, in the turtles movie, who plays the heroes in half-shells’ mutant warthog nemesis Bebop. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" undeniably does one thing better than any of the other "Tmnt" movies that came before it: The film accurately and delightfully portrays Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo as teenagers. Along with having teen cast members Nicolas Cantu, Micah Abbey, Brady Noon, and Shamon Brown Jr. record their dialogue together to capture their young energy bouncing off each other, "Mutant Mayhem" really hones in on the challenges of growing up, especially when being a mutant keeps you from being part of society.
Thankfully, by the end of "Mutant Mayhem," the turtles aren't seen as monsters, and they're actually accepted by heroes as the humans of New York City, which allows them to experience something else that no movie has done before: Letting them go to high school. The turtles take off their masks, put down their weapons,...

Mikey, Donnie, Leo, and Raph in Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies’ ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’
The pizza-eating, ninja-fighting, socially awkward teenage turtles are back on the big screen in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, a fresh, new adventure that reboots the popular animated franchise.
The film begins by showing how the attempted arrest and collection of a mad scientist and his experimental mutant pet leads to green experimental ooze seeping down into the sewers of New York. The ooze infects four young turtles and a rat named Splinter (voiced by Jackie Chan), transforming them into nearly human-size mutants who can talk and have intelligence.
Splinter adopts the young turtles and names them Michelangelo (voiced by Shamon Brown Jr.), Donatello (Micah Abbey), Leonardo (voiced by Nicolas Cantu), and Raphael (voiced by Brady Noon). The overprotective adoptive father fears humans and the outside world and keeps his turtles safe in his sewer home.

When Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" comic book in 1984, they were deliberately riffing on several comic books of the early '80s that were already quite popular. Yet their concept was so out there, it looks increasingly bizarre on paper the longer you look at it: a quartet of baby turtles becomes mutated and anthropomorphized, grow into wisecracking teenagers, get trained in martial arts by a mutant rat who raises them (and names them after famous Renaissance artists), and fight crime. How could these outrageous characters and their wacky story be easily accepted?
The answer, as it turned out, was "easily and rapidly.

The "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" movie arrives in theaters this week. Unlike other iterations of the heroes in a half-shell, the "Mutant Mayhem" part of the title actually delivers in a way that no other "Tmnt" movie has before.
Previous "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movies have mostly focused on Shredder as the primary villain. But the sequel "Secret of the Ooze" introduced mutant baddies Tokka and Rahzar, and the more recent live-action/CGI hybrids produced by Michael Bay brought villains Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady into the fray as well. However, "Mutant Mayhem" features a cavalcade of mutant characters previously only seen in the "Tmnt" animated series and comics, and they're all voiced by some recognizable voices that you might have a hard time placing. That's why we've got a helpful "Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem" character guide, so you have the answer ready when your grandma asks, "Who was the voice of Mondo Gecko?...

All right, perhaps this unifying theme for the 2023 Summer movie season is nostalgia. Sure, the multiplex is usually filled with sequels and reboots this time of year, but at this moment the studios appear to be trying to exploit the treasured properties of our youth, over several different generations. Last weekend it was a beloved ride/attraction which has been a staple at the happiest place(s) on Earth for over fifty years. However the box office (and WB record-breaker) for the last couple of weeks stretches back another ten years to engulf theatre lobbies in a title wave of pink (“This Barbie’s gonna’ bust a billion bucks at the box office”). Now, this Wednesday’s (gettin’ a jump on the weekend) new release also has a toy connection, but that merch arrived well after the characters’ comic book debut in 1984 (which spawned a TV cartoon a couple of years later). Oh,...

It's been quite some time, but the heroes in a half-shell are coming back to the big screen this week. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" is hitting theaters, with Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael bringing their brand of crime fighting out of the sewers and into the streets — in animated form! But as we recently learned, a sequel to the film is already in the works at Paramount in addition to a two-season TV show that will bridge the gap between installments. So the question for moviegoers: is there a credits scene that helps set up the future of the franchise?
Credits scenes have become expected fare for franchise films these days, in no small part thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sometimes they're hugely consequential, setting the stage for future installments. Other times, they just exist as a fun little bit of extra footage to help put a punctuation mark on the situation.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem writer/director Jeff Rowe is a lifelong Turtles fan. “Like, I have thoughts that I remember. Like, knowing how to think – and then I remember loving the Ninja Turtles. They’re just married together,” joked Rowe during Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies’ 2023 San Diego Comic-Con panel in Hall H.
Rowe’s vision for the 2023 theatrical film sprang from concentrating on the “Teenage” portion of Tmnt. “It really started with focusing on the teenage part, which, in early conversations with Seth [Rogen], always felt like the most underserved of the four descriptors,” said Rowe. “And we wanted to cast actual teenagers and create something that felt authentic. And then we decided to reflect that in the art style.”
That desire to adopt a different style of animation for the new Tmnt project was accomplished with CG animation that looks less perfect and precise.

The summer movie season isn't over yet, and we've got some heroes in a half-shell coming our way to try and make a splash late in the game. Paramount Pictures is gearing up to release "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" next week, giving the animated take on Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's beloved comic book creations a mid-week release to get a jump on the competition. That competition, in this case, is "Meg 2: The Trench," an R-rated shark flick seemingly going for a very different crowd. The question is, can this "Tmnt" reboot do for the turtles what "Into the Spider-Verse" did for Spider-Man?
Box Office Pro currently has director Jeff Rowe's "Mutant Mayhem" taking in anywhere between $27 and $36 million over the weekend, with a take of $37 to $49 million in the cards for the five-day, Wednesday to Sunday stretch. Meanwhile, "Meg 2" is eyeing a similar $26 to $35 million take.

When you think of the various villains of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you likely think of Shredder. Although the leader of the Foot Clan has been the arch-enemy of the Turtles for decades, Shredder won’t be featured in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, but that wasn’t always the case.
While speaking with io9, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem director Jeff Rowe revealed that early versions of the movie included Shredder as the main villain.
“The early version of the film [was] very different from what you’re seeing on screen,” Rowe said. “They were just in high school the entire movie. Shredder was the villain. “I like turtles.” Perhaps the most iconic phrase in modern history was uttered by ten-year-old Jonathan Ware at the 2007 Rose Festival in Portland, Oregon. With his zombie face paint freshly applied, Jonathan aka Zombie Kid was approached by Kgw local news correspondent Nancy Francis. After being asked to comment on his face paint, Jonathan’s response gave birth to one of the biggest viral videos. Sixteen years later, Paramount Pictures tracked Zombie Kid down to ask him his opinion on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. I think you already know what he’ll say.
When asked if this is the actual Zombie Kid, the official Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem Instagram account responded, “Oh yeah, he’s back.” The early reactions to the film have been fairly positive and I’m digging the stylized animation. The studios seem pumped about the project as well as they have already...
