Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 episode 1 is a memorably shocking premiere (Recap and review)
Image
I’ve been a Criminal Minds fan for as long as I can remember. Evolution season 2 left Voit’s fate in the balance, with the team begrudgingly agreeing to work with him to solve the serial killer case. In Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3, we catch up with the Bau and Voit six months after the previous season, only to find Voit in a coma and the team on the hunt for their newest unsub. Without further ado, let’s dive into the evidence that makes the episode a memorably shocking premiere on Paramount+. Spoilers below.

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 18 Episode 1 Recap: Is Voit Connected With Franklin Fowler?
Image
Paramount+’s hit procedural thriller series, Criminal Minds: Evolution, has returned with its eighteenth season, building on the overarching plot thread of the previous chapters and bringing new cases of the week—which might or might not be tied with each other at their core. Previously, the Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau) used psychopathic serial killer Elias Voit to get to the bottom of the Gold Star conspiracy, which saw a secretive government program turning children into psychopaths from an early age. Veteran Special Agent Rossi, who almost became one of Voit’s victims, had to grapple with the realization that he needed to work alongside his tormentor. At the end of the 17th season, Voit was attacked in prison and somehow survived, raising questions about Rossi’s possible involvement. Senior member Emily Prentiss was kidnapped by brainwashed victims of the Gold Star program; however, a timely response by her Bau led to her rescue.

Criminal Minds: Evolution Kicks Off Season 3 With a Killer Who Drowns in Darkness
Image
Criminal Minds: Evolution is back, and it wasted no time diving into dark waters — literally.

Criminal Minds Season 18 Episode 1, “Swimmer’s Calculus,” is a haunting, high-stakes season opener that plunges the Bau into the mind of a twisted killer who uses pools as a psychological battleground.

But as chilling as the unsub’s tactics are, it’s the psychological fallout, ongoing Voit storyline, and Tyler Green’s evolution (pun intended) that make this episode sink its hooks in deep.

(Michael Yarish/Paramount+)

Let’s start with the obvious: seeing anything in the opening scenes is nearly impossible. Paramount+, I beg you to invest in a flashlight or two. The darkness is so thick it borders on parody.

What we can discern involves a capped man slurping coffee and luring a stranger before spraying him in the face with aerosolized fentanyl. A cop arrives, gets tricked by a wasted brother ruse,...

'Criminal Minds' Season 18 Is Going To Be “Deeply Personal” for Tara, Says Aisha Tyler
Image
In about forty-eight hours, Criminal Minds will make a thrilling comeback with its eighteenth season, also serving as the third chapter of the Evolution revival. The season debuts with the "Swimmer's Calculus" episode, written by Breen Frazier and directed by Bethany Rooney, with every main character from Season 17 set to return, including the psychotic villain Elias Voit (Zach Gilford). A few hints have come up regarding what’s ahead for some of these characters; one from Paget Brewster (who portrays the Bau chief Emily Prentiss) and most recently from Aisha Tyler, whose character Tara Lewis is about to have one hell of a season.

Speaking with TVLine about the new installment of Criminal Minds, Tyler teased a “deeply personal” journey for her character, involving her history, saying:

“This season is going to be deeply personal for Tara. We get to dive into my backstory, which has been really beautiful.”

“Some of the Best Dialogue I’ve Ever Had the Honor of Saying”: ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ Star Teases a Pivotal Moment for Prentiss and Tyler in Season 3
Image
As Criminal Minds: Evolution returns for Season 3 later in the week on May 8, the Bau continues to deal with some of the most depraved offenders ever known to man. Most of the team members have witnessed a lot of unsubs, but Tyler Green (Rj Hatanaka) is relatively new, and he's learning as he goes. "People think this job is about staring down evil, but it’s not. . . . . It's about loss," Prentiss (Paget Brewster) tells Tyler in the season's trailer. Brewster said this line "is some of the best dialogue I’ve ever had the honor of saying onscreen. It is so well written," when previewing the season to TV Insider, and how Tyler settles in with the team. "I never remember lines [after filming]," she said, but the scene, written by Jayne Archer, stuck out because it sums up what the Bau does in a really complex manner. She explained:

"The speech...

Showrunner Erica Messer: Criminal Minds “Stays away from politics” But There’s One Political Conspiracy Even We Couldn’t Avoid in ‘Evolution’
Image
Criminal Minds has never been the kind of show to toss around political buzzwords or jump on trending headlines. Erica Messer, the showrunner herself, swears by keeping stuff grounded in psychological suspense rather than Washington drama.

But every long-running series eventually hits a curveball, and Evolution found theirs. While the Bau sticks to profiling twisted minds and chasing serial offenders, one unexpected thread sneaked its way in, one that even Messer admits they couldn’t quite dodge.

A still from Criminal Minds | Credits: Paramount+

Let’s just say, when you dig deep enough into human behavior, you sometimes unearth conspiracies no scriptwriter planned on tackling.

Erica Messer admitted Criminal Minds dodges politics, but not that one time in Evolution

Criminal Minds: Evolution might steer clear of politics, but showrunner Erica Messer admitted there was one conspiracy too big to ignore. “We couldn’t avoid [it] when we came back,” she told Cbr.

'We Get to See Spencer': Criminal Minds: Evolution Showrunner Teases Matthew Gray Gubler's Big Return
Image
After CBS ended the police procedural drama Criminal Minds in 2022, Paramount+ revived the series two years later, dubbing it Criminal Minds: Evolution. Although the series continued with many characters from the original, some fan-favorite characters didn't return, including Matthew Gray Gubler's Spencer Reid.

Gubler was a series regular on the original Criminal Minds series, which ran between 2005 and 2020. He didn't return for the first two seasons, but he is set to make his return in Criminal Minds: Evolution's Season 3, the show's overall eighteenth season, which is set to premiere on May 8. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Erica Meeser confirmed Gubler's big return.

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3 will also feature a huge time jump, as the new season will take place six months after the events of Season 2's finale.

Matthew Gray Gubler is officially reprising his role as Spencer Reid, and he will return for one episode. "Without spoiling anything,...

Criminal Minds: Evolution boss teases what brings Spencer back in season 18
Image
Wheels up in May, profilers! We're returning to the round table room in the FBI: Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau) building to solve more twisted cases and tackle life head-on. Entertainment Weekly surprised Criminal Minds fans on April 10 by releasing multiple updates for season 18.

Criminal Minds: Evolution boss Erica Messer dropped some teasers we may not expect. We received a season teaser video, photos, and storyline updates from Voit to Spencer Reid. I'm not kidding when I say they surprised us. Criminal Minds rarely releases updates, besides an occasional Paget Brewster tweet slip. Other than that, fans don't know much until close to release.

Matthew Gray Gubler reprises his role as Spencer Reid

Along with Voit and the Bau team returning, Matthew Gray Gubler's anticipated return is finally happening. I'm a Spencer Reid fan, and I'll be glad to see him, but I can already feel my heart breaking for what he's possibly going to endure.

The Seeds of Evil Are Blooming in New ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ Season 3 Trailer
Image
The third installment of the revived Criminal Minds series arrives in less than a month, and with it comes the return of the ever-infuriating Elias Voit. Voit is one of several characters set to return in the new season, as revealed in an all-new teaser from Paramount+, hinting at the chaos ahead for the Behavioral Analysis Unit —Bau. Of course, the Bau is the center of attention in the clip, confirming the return of fan favorites: David Rossi, Jennifer "JJ" Jareau, Penelope Garcia, Dr Tara Lewis, Luke Alvez, Emily Prentiss and Tyler Green.

Kicking off with the somber-looking team (besides Penelope) at the beach, the Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3 trailer progresses to Voit being shown pictures of a couple of murdered victims. Also, Prentiss is heard saying, “Can I tell you a secret? You think this job is about staring down evil, but it's not.” She is speaking to a confused Tyler,...

When Hope Calls Season 2 Reportedly Gets Narrow Release Window
Image
When Hope Calls season 2 gets a narrow release date. A spinoff of Hallmark Channel's When Calls the Heart, and based on the books by Janette Oke, the drama premiered in August 2019. The story follows a pair of sisters, Lillian Walsh (Morgan Kohan) and Grace Bennett (Jocelyn Hudon), in the town of Brookfield back in 1916. The cast also includes Ryan-James Hatanaka, Greg Hovanessian, Wendy Crewson, Marshall Williams, Hanneke Talbot, Neil Crone, and Full House alum Lori Loughlin. Although the adaptation was renewed back in December 2021, it's been a long wait to get to audiences.

TVLine was asked about when the spinoff might return. Although the outlet did not have an exact release window set, it was mentioned that When Hope Calls season 2 is expected to premiere on Great American Family in Q2 of 2025, which would narrow the release month to either April, May, or June. Earlier reports mentioned a January release date.

Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 is in production! Here's what to know about the upcoming season
Image
Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 may be over, but we’re already looking forward to what happens next. Even though it’s still early, we do know the show will be back for season 3. Plus, the season 2 finale already set up a possible arc that will continue to involve Elias Voit (Zach Gilford).

In the season 2 finale, Voit had started his prison sentence, where he for some reason had requested to be put into the general population. In the final scene, he was attacked while doing laundry. Almost immediately, based on his previous behavior and how diabolical he could be, there were suspicions that he planned this himself. There is no doubt Voit is prepared to do whatever it takes to get out of prison as soon as possible.

Here's what we know about the upcoming season!

Prentiss' Secret JJ Insult In Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Degrades Their Most Poignant Talk
Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2, Episode 7, "Piranha."

Prentiss insults JJ by grouping her with Tyler Green as Bau's supposed new generation of agents in Criminal Minds: Evolution, even though she has been with the team for years. This cheapens their previous conversation about Bau-Gate in Criminal Minds: Evolution season where JJ offers Prentiss encouragement. JJ's importance in Bau, especially in storytelling and maintaining family life, is highlighted despite being overlooked in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2.

Just a week after they had their emotional talk, Emily Prentiss secretly insults JJ Jarreau in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, cheapening their previous conversation. As the Bau enters the final stretch of its investigation on Gold Star, everyone is starting to get more impatient with how slowly they are progressing to getting to the bottom of the case. It doesn't help that while the profilers are busy trying to decode the mystery...

I Am So Over Tyler/Garcia/Alvez's Drama, Please Make It Stop Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2
Image
Criminal Minds: Evolution's love triangle between Tyler, Garcia, and Alvez is unnecessary and distracts from the main storyline. The show's office romance execution is problematic and doesn't add anything to the overall plot, especially as Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 deals with darker themes. The unresolved love triangle needs resolution before everyone, including Tyler, returns for Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3.

With Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 entering its final stretch, I am so ready for the show to end Tyler Green, Penelope Garcia, & Luke Alvez's complicated relationship. As a loyal follower of the Criminal Minds franchise even when it was still on network TV, I know that romances aren't exactly its strong suit. The show never really fully delved into this particular storyline, even as its fellow police procedural dabbled into the same arc, with Law & Order: Svu doing its back-and-forth with Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler, as well as...

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2, Episode 6 Review: Rossi Goes to the Edge
Image
The following contains spoilers from Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2, Episode 6, "Message in a Bottle," now streaming on Paramount+.

Throughout Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2, the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit has been in the crosshairs of some as-yet-unrevealed threat. In "Message in a Bottle," David Rossi finally finds the "North Star" that can help the unit stop "spinning [their] wheels" and finally make some headway in the Gold Star investigation. And he does it by confronting the character haunting him since the end of Season 1. This episode is a step forward for Rossi, and a win for both actor Joe Mantegna and the fans.

Rossi has been "haunted" by visions of Zach Gilford's suspected serial killer Elias Voit. In Evolution Season 1, Voit almost killed Rossi by locking him in a shipping container. Of course, the team saved him, but since then Rossi has been suffering from visions of Voit taunting him as he does his work.

Criminal Minds: Evolution Star Compares Garcias Relationship With Alvez To Morgan: I Hate To Say Improved, But
Image
Garcia's relationship with Alvez in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 is based on mutual respect, which is slightly different to her flirtatious dynamic with Morgan. Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 is developing a side storyline with Tyler Green complicating Garcia and Alvez's situation. Showrunner Erica Messer confirms that any missing original character can return, including Morgan, but their reason must be personal, not professional.

There are certain differences between Penelope Garcia's relationship with Luke Alvez to Derek Morgan, and Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 star, Kirsten Vangsness breaks it down. Criminal Minds is known for its incredible ensemble and horrific unsubs, but it isn't used to tackling romances. Granted that the franchise has had a few dalliances over the years, the procedural's storytelling just isn't focused on them. That is gradually changing after it introduces a possible relationship between Garcia and Alvez. Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 has stagnated that narrative, with...

‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ Stars on Garcia & Luke: ‘We Don’t Know Where It’s Going to Go’
Image
Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) and Luke Alvez’s (Adam Rodriguez) date may not have worked out, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Criminal Minds: Evolution is done with the possibility of a romance there. In fact, serial killer Elias Voit (Zach Gilford) remarked on the “vibe” between them and commented about Garcia and Tyler Green (Ryan-James Hatanaka) and her having a thing that drove Luke crazy in the latest episode. “We hang out together a lot” in Season 17, Vangsness told TV Insider ahead of the premiere of Garcia and Alvez. “I keep saying the writers write things and we do what they say, and then they go like, ‘People talk about it. Let’s just have them have a date. And then can it be done?’ And we’re like, ‘Sure, it can be done.’ And then we do things and then you guys ask questions like that,” she laughed.

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2, Episode 5 Breaks the Bau With Conspiracies and Theories
Image
The following contains spoilers from Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2, Episode 5, "Conspiracy vs. Theory."

It's the midway point for Season 2 of Criminal Minds: Evolution, and Gold Star, Elias Voit (Zack Gilford) and Emily Prentiss's (Paget Brewster) deeply disturbed neighbor are bringing the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau) to their breaking point. After mostly leading on the members of the Bau and mocking them for it, Voit finally starts helping with the investigation into Gold Star. However, Voit plays both sides expertly, narrowly avoiding death.

"Conspiracy vs. Theory" is an episode that shows just how much Criminal Minds changed in its reboot in, Evolution. Unlike the past few episodes or any of the show's classic seasons, there was no case-of-the-week here. Instead, the whole narrative focused squarely on the Gold Star investigation. Criminal Minds' transformation from episodic cases to a serialized investigation has never been more apparent than in this episode. The Bau recently discovered that,...

Prentiss Breaks Reid's 7-Year Record In Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 In A Cheap Way

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, episode 4.

Emily Prentiss breaks Spencer Reid's record with her mugshot in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, episode 4. Criminal Minds: Evolution introduces darker storytelling, but Prentiss' arc falls short compared to Reid's, especially since it is easily resolved. Prentiss' prison stint could have been more serious to elevate the stakes in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2.

Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 has Emily Prentiss break Spencer Reids seven-year record but in the most annoying way possible. Criminal Minds: Evolution, Season 2, Episode 4 Reveals the Gold Star Conspiracy's Truth
Image
The following contains discussions of self-harm, graphic violence and spoilers from Criminal Minds: Evolution, Season 2, Episode 4, "Kingdom of the Blind."

After a trio of episodes with the Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau) chasing their tails, Criminal Minds: Evolution finally sheds some light on the Gold Star conspiracy at the heart of the revival series' second season. Who Is Brian In Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2? Returning Original CBS Villain Explained
Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, episode 3.

Brian Garritty's return in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 ties back to his initial appearance in season 15, bringing new complications for Emily Prentiss. Brian was first introduced in Criminal Minds season 15, episode 4, "Saturday," as Prentiss' former neighbor who was also a conspiracy theorist. The introduction of AI and deep-fake technology adds to the tension as a leaked video puts JJ Jarreau in a compromising position. Reid's Criminal Minds: Evolution Return Just Became Way More Likely
Image
Spencer Reid's return in Criminal Minds: Evolution looks more likely with recent news on the show's renewal for a third season. The original cast members remain central to Evolution's storyline, with the series staying true to its roots and characters. Matthew Gray Gubler's potential return as Reid in the upcoming season hints at a promising storyline for fans of the Bau.

Recent news about Paramount+'s Criminal Minds: Evolution (2022) makes fan-favorite character Spencer Reid's (Matthew Gray Gubler) return even more likely. A continuation of the original Criminal Minds, which aired from 2005 to 2020 on network television, Evolution serves as the sixteenth season of the once-canceled series. Unlike the franchise's two incredibly short-lived spin-off series, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Evolution centers on many of the original show's long-standing criminal profilers who work for the FBI as members of its Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau).

With just a few exceptions,...

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Accomplishes An Impossible Task After 19 Years (& It Isn't Good)
Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for the Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 premiere.

Garcia's obsession with Tyler makes her annoying and hypocritical in season 2 of Criminal Minds: Evolution. The Bau faces new challenges with being understaffed and Tyler Green's arrival as a consultant in the show. Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 delves into Garcia's struggles with relationships, with barely any regard to how her actions are affecting people around her, particularly Alvez.

Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 does an impossible task after 19 years, but it isn't worth celebrating. FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit continues its work on uncovering the mystery of Gold Star after it was previously set-up in its inaugural year. After the harrowing experience of learning, tracking, and eventually catching Elias Voit for creating and facilitating a serial killer network, Emily Prentiss and her team were presented with a new, and perhaps even bigger, issue to crack. With Clark Gregg's FBI director breathing down their neck,...

BAUs Latest Member Confirms Their Return For Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3
Image
Warning! Mild spoilers for the Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 premiere.

Ryan-James Hatanaka confirms his return as Tyler Green for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 on Instagram. Green's potential full-time role with the FBI in season 3 may complicate his relationship with Penelope Garcia. The addition of Green to the cast may reduce the urgency to bring back Matthew Gray Gubler's Spencer Reid in Criminal Minds: Evolution.

In light of the renewal of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3, the Bau's latest member confirms that they will also return even before season 2 ends. After some rough patches during its development, reviving the hit CBS police procedural has proven to be worth it for Paramount+ revival. Proof of its success is the show's early season 3 renewal, even before Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 premiered. The renewal doesn't spoil anything about Bau's current case, but a cast member's social media activity may have prematurely revealed their...

Spencer Reid's Return Is More Unattainable After Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Update
Image
Spencer Reid's absence in Criminal Minds: Evolution has been a big cause of concern for the revival. New character Tyler Green joining the Bau as a consultant in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 could pave the way for him to be a more permanent member. Green's involvement with the Bau decreases the urgency to reunite Reid with his team. Despite Green's role, the Bau still needs Reid's unique genius as a fan-favorite profiler to tackle severe cases effectively.

A Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 cast update decreases the chances of Spencer Reid's return as a core member of the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit. As an original cast member, Matthew Gray Gubler's return has been one of the most-awaited developments in the Paramount+ revival of the CBS series. There has been some confusion as to why the actor wasn't part of Criminal Minds: Evolution when it debuted. Initially, Gubler's non-involvement...

Criminal Minds: Evolutions Most Controversial Character Hints At Season 3 Return
Image
Tyler Green's return in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 is teased by actor Ryan-James Hatanaka on Instagram. Hatanaka's expanded role as Green in season 2 hints at a possible permanent position with the Bau team. If Green proves to be useful to the Bau, it makes sense for Prentiss to bring him in as a full-time profiler.

It seems like Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 will see the return of the revival's most controversial character. FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit continues its stint on Paramount+ with the lingering mysteries left in its debut year. Criminal Minds: Evolution has maintained its core cast, with Emily Prentiss' team all surviving the dangerous Sicarius serial killer network mystery. However, work continues for the profilers as they dig into the mystery of the so-called Gold Star, which was started by Elias Voit.

Ahead of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2's premiere, however, Ryan-James Hatanaka seems to already be...

The new trailer for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 previews the Bau's toughest mission yet. Criminal Minds: Evolution's Most Controversial Character Will Be More Problematic In Season 2
Image
Season 2 of Criminal Minds: Evolution makes Tyler Green a member of the Bau, and this may cause tension among the team. Green's connection to Sicarius and subsequent affair with Garcia makes him a controversial addition to the Criminal Minds cast. Green's murky past and potential ties to the Gold Star mystery make him a questionable addition to the team. The Bau must remain cautious around Green in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, as his true motives and allegiances are still unclear.

The expanded role of Criminal Minds: Evolution's most controversial new character means more chaos for the Bau. Despite the extended break and move to Paramount+, the revival is technically a continuation of the CBS series. Criminal Minds: Evolution has its old show's cast intact, albeit with a couple of absences, such as Spencer Reid and Matt Simmons. However, since it was still a new start, with a darker version of the police procedural,...

Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 gets an optimistic filming update from Paget Brewster. Criminal Minds: Why Derek Morgan Hasn’t Returned In Evolution Addressed By Shemar Moore
Image
Criminal Minds: Evolution needs Derek Morgan to return and help the Bau with bigger and darker cases. Bringing back Shemar Moore's character would allow for the long-awaited on-screen reunion with Spencer Reid. Derek's personal connection to the team, especially with Penelope Garcia, could bring new dynamics to the show. At this point, Moore is only waiting to be invited to join Criminal Minds: Evolution.

Despite calls for him to appear, Shemar Moore explains why he hasn't returned as Derek Morgan in Criminal Minds: Evolution. The Swat actor was part of the original ensemble of the CBS police procedural when it debuted in 2005. He was in Criminal Minds as Ssa Derek Morgan for more than a decade until he decided to leave and pursue other things. Still, the show was able to craft a send-off that leaves the door open for him to return anytime. Given this, there's an...

Derek Morgan’s Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 Return Can Make Garcia’s Long-Awaited
Image
Morgan's return in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 could spur a romance between Garcia and Alvez, resolving their unresolved feelings. Garcia's skepticism towards Alvez may be resolved with the involvement of Morgan. He is the only one who can likely convince her to take a chance on their relationship. With JJ's marriage ending in season 2, Garcia and Alvez's romance could fill the void it leaves regarding the romance department in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2.

Shemar Moore's return as Derek Morgan in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 can pave the way for Penelope Garcia and Luke Alvez to finally be together. Not long after CBS wrapped up the police procedural's 15-year stint on the network, Paramount+ realized that there are still so many exciting stories to be told with the Behavioral Analysis Unit. There was some confusion about their planned return, but in the end, a grittier and darker Criminal Minds was born.
