During the 2022 Creative Arts and Primetime Emmys ceremonies, two vastly different age records were broken as the acting victors accepted their prizes. First, 28-year-old Lee Yoo-mi (“Squid Game”) supplanted Samira Wiley as the youngest recipient of either drama guest award, and then Jean Smart (70) improved upon her own oldest comedy actress winner record by clinching a second consecutive trophy for “Hacks.” With one age record having already been smashed at last weekend’s Creative Arts Awards, five more are up for grabs heading into the big primetime show.
Firstly, congratulations are in order for newly crowned Best Drama Guest Actress champ Storm Reid (“The Last of Us”), who, at 20, went from being her category’s third youngest nominee to its youngest winner. In fact, she is the all-time youngest recipient of any guest acting Emmy, also taking that distinction from Lee, who in turn usurped Justin Timberlake. Two more “The Last of Us...

Strong Girl Nam-soon is a Netflix comedy series created by Baek Mi-kyung, Kim Jung-sik, and Lee Kyung-shik. It is a remake of the popular 2017 Mbc drama of the same name. It stars Lee You-mi, Kim Jung-eun, and Kim Hae-sook,
Every week, a new chapter about this girl endowed with extraordinary strength.
It is a fun and silly comedy that solely focuses on making people laugh, embracing its ridiculous and unapologetically stupid side.
Sit back and get ready for some silly laughs because the combination is, at the very least, surprising: a girl who, since she was a baby, could lift tables, jump four meters, and do all sorts of crazy things.
Plot
Nam-soon was born with superhuman strength, like her mother but, when her father comes up with the “brilliant” idea of taking his daughter to Mongolia to photograph the stars (who knows what he was thinking), he loses the girl.

In the official teaser video (watch above), we see quick-cuts of various numbered contestants decked out in the trademark green-and-white track suits. “You have got to be kidding me,” says an awe-struck man wearing the number 336. Arriving at the tail end of a creatively fertile and financially lucrative decade or so for South Korean entertainment, with cinema being a key aspect of this boom, the domestic films presented at the 2023 Jeonjun International Film Festival took on an extra level of significance. It was hard not to look at these selections, mostly feature debuts, as a bellwether of this influential national film industry’s development over the upcoming years.
The trials and tribulations of the film industry itself were the focus of some of the Korean competition’s best entries, such as Yoo Heong-jun’s Regardless of Us. At once mundane and elliptical, the film is most effective in its opening stretch, which sees middle-aged actress Hwa-ryeong (Cho Hyunjin) being visited at a hospital by colleagues from her most recent production, including the director and producer. She’s recovering from a stroke, and her condition seems to...

Cherry Jones could score three Emmy nominations this year for her supporting turn on the Apple TV+ limited series “Five Days at Memorial” and her guest appearances on “Poker Face” and “Succession.” It’s those double guest bids, though, that would put her in rarefied air as the three-time Emmy winner would become the 11th person to earn drama and comedy guest acting nominations in the same year.
Since the guest categories as we know them were standardized in 1989, 10 people have pulled off this feat. Jack Gilford was the first, getting shortlisted that very year for “The Golden Girls” and “thirtysomething.” In 1991, Colleen Dewhurst won comedy guest actress for “Murphy Brown” and was nominated in drama for “Road to Avonlea.” Gwen Verdon snagged noms in 1993 for her guest spots on “Dream On” and “Homicide: Life on the Street,” while Marlee Matlin followed in 1994 with bids for “Seinfeld” and “Picket Fences.

It seems the 1995 film “Kids” still sends ripples across the movie industry, with Lee Hwan implementing a similar approach for his movie about young adults, although the focus here seems to be more on the visuals and impression rather than context itself, while the influence of Kim Ki-duk is equally evident.

High schooler Se-jin seems to be a kind of sociopath, since her reactions to what is happening in her life are minimal if any and her overall actions equally perplexing. “Beef” has raised the stakes.
Variety has learned exclusively that Netflix and the creative teams behind the new dark comic series have chosen to seek Emmy Awards consideration as a limited or anthology series instead of a comedy, where many pundits had assumed it would campaign.
Starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, the series dropped on the streaming platform on April 6, garnering positive reviews from critics and audiences. Currently, the show sits at 99% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 92% from audiences.
Created by Lee Sung Jin, best known for writing and producing HBO’s “Silicon Valley” (for which he received an Emmy nom for outstanding comedy series in 2015), the darkly comical romp was announced in March 2021 and commissioned as an anthology series for Netflix.

Remakes are tricky business, even when they are of features that were only moderately successful. In such cases, the makers on the new project have to figure out exactly what worked and what didn’t in the original and find a balance that keeps the essence of the original and also builds upon it to make it a better work. This is exactly the task first-time director Pil Kam-sung finds at his hands, who adapts Hong Kong production “Saving Mr. Wu”, which was itself loosely based on the real-life kidnapping of a Chinese TV actor. To make his narrative stand out, Pil came up with an innovative quirk: casting superstar Hwang Jung-min to play himself in the feature.

Leonardo DiCaprio could be invited to join the cast of Netflix’s Emmy-winning global smash hit ‘Squid Game’ in a future season, series writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk has said, reports ‘Variety’.
At a congratulatory press conference in Seoul on Friday, when asked if any known Hollywood actor would star in ‘Squid Game’ Season 2, Hwang said, according to ‘Variety’: “There will be no known Hollywood actor in Season 2. That’s not in the plan and if the stage changes, maybe in Season 3 — but for Season 2, it is still set in Korea. Leonardo DiCaprio did say he’s a big fan of ‘Squid Game’, so maybe if time, or chances, allow, we can ask him to join the games.”
The second season of ‘Squid Game’, Hwang confirmed, will commence shooting in 2023 and release in 2024. “We will start shooting Season 2 next year and it’ll be released the following year,” the series writer-director said.

“Succession” may be the frontrunner for Best Drama Series – leading all shows this year with a record-breaking 25 nominations – but that did not stop its fellow nominees from scoring huge wins at Sunday’s Creative Arts Emmys. While the HBO drama secured a key victory in Best Casting for Avy Kaufman and Francine Maisler, it lost major technical categories to “Euphoria,” “Squid Game,” “Severance” and “Stranger Things” – all of which nabbed multiple trophies. Though despite those losses, there is little to worry about “Succession” looking to pick up its second series win.
The family satire had 13 nominations going into the Creative Arts, seven of which were in the guest acting categories where it lost to Colman Domingo for “Euphoria” in Guest Actor and Lee Yoo-mi for “Squid Game” in Guest Actress. The former show also took advantage of the double nominations for “Succession” in editing, while the latter bested it in production design.

Is “Succession” in danger at Monday’s Primetime Emmys? HBO’s family drama has long been the favorite to win Best Drama Series for a second time, but at this past weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys, it only won a single trophy for Best Drama Casting. Gold Derby’s Marcus James Dixon, Daniel Montgomery and Denton Davidson discuss this hot topic as well as make their final drama predictions for the acting, writing and directing races in their latest Editors’ Emmy slugfest (watch above).
“We have an exciting race on our hands for Best Drama Series,” Dixon proclaims at the start of the video chat. “We’re gonna talk today about whether ‘Succession’ can hold on to its front-runner status, which it’s had for months and months, if not a year.” While “Succession” only claimed a single Creative Art Award, several of its competitors dominated with multiple victories.

“I don’t think I’ve ever won a single battle in my whole life,” bemoans Dame Harriet Walter’s character Lady Caroline Collingwood in a third-season episode of HBO’s “Succession.” The acclaimed actress just landed her second Emmy Award nomination for playing the wickedly funny but prickly matriarch on the series and looks to win “the battle” for Drama Guest Actress in September.
Walter competes in a field of that includes two fellow “Succession” guest stars, newcomers and industry vets, although notably not a single one has previously taken home an Emmy. From her own series, she faces off against three-time nominee Hope Davis and Sanaa Lathan as well as three-time nominee Marcia Gay Harden (“The Morning Show”) and first-timers Martha Kelly (“Euphoria”) and Lee Yoo-mi (“Squid Game”). Walter herself also received recognition in the Comedy Guest Actress category this year for her performance on “Ted Lasso.”

Nearly two decades into her stand-up comedy career, Martha Kelly ventured into acting by taking on the role of Martha Brooks on the FX comedy series “Baskets.” In the half dozen years since her debut, she has carved out a niche playing perpetually soft-spoken, outwardly joyless characters on such sitcoms as “Will & Grace,” “Grace and Frankie,” and “Hacks.” She has also applied her notoriously deadpan performing style to a few dramatic parts, including the one for which she just received her first Emmy nomination: Laurie on HBO’s “Euphoria.”

Half of the record-breaking 14 acting Emmy nominations “Succession” received this year went to guest performers, three of whom are women. The only other series that have ever amassed as many simultaneous bids in the Best Drama Guest Actress category are “Six Feet Under” (2002), “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (2009), and “The Handmaid’s Tale” (2018). The only thing better than receiving one Emmy nomination is receiving two Emmy nominations. But earning multiple bids in the same year as a performer is not as uncommon as one might think, especially with television moving toward shorter seasons and limited series still rising in popularity. This has allowed actors to appear in more projects throughout the year, giving them additional chances to be recognized. But there’s another reason it happens too: guest appearances.
So far, 10 performers have been nominated in both the drama and comedy guest categories in the same year. The first to do it was Jack Gilford, who in 1989 was nominated for his work on the comedy “The Golden Girls” and the drama “thirtysomething.” He was followed in 1991 by Colleen Dewhurst, who was nominated for her appearances on “Murphy Brown” and “Road to Avonlea,” winning for the former. The news was announced as part of Netflix’s Geeked Week. The Geeked Week video featured the four main actors of the series — Park Ji-hu, Yoon Chan-young, Cho Yi-hyun and Lomon — thanking fans for their support of the show and confirming that Season 2 is on the way.
