In the fall of 1983, one could already make a plausible case for Martin Scorsese as one of the greatest living American filmmakers based on “Mean Streets,” “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” “Taxi Driver,” “Italianamerican,” “The Last Waltz,” “Raging Bull,” and “The King of Comedy.” But as the holidays approached, Scorsese’s career was in trouble.
After establishing himself with a series of lean, mean masterpieces shot on tight schedules, the director’s productions had grown in a scale disproportionate to their financial success; “New York, New York,” “Raging Bull,” and “The King of Comedy” had all taken around a hundred days to shoot, and while all three are acknowledged as classics today, they received mixed reviews at the time and “Raging Bull” barely broke even at the box office — “New York, New York” and “The King of Comedy” were flat-out flops.

Screenwriter Bo Goldman, who won Oscars for his scripts to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Melvin and Howard” and was among a select group of film scribes including Robert Towne and William Goldman considered to be among that generation’s best, died Tuesday in Helendale, Calif., his son-in-law, director Todd Field, confirmed to the New York Times. He was 90.
Goldman was also Oscar nominated for 1993’s “Scent of a Woman.”
The 1976 Oscar he shared with Lawrence Hauben for co-adapting Ken Kesey’s novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” was a particularly impressive achievement considering that “Cuckoo’s Nest” represented only Goldman’s second screenplay and the first to be produced. The win for adapted screenplay was part of a sweep for the film that also included victories for best picture, director, actor and actress. When HBO’s “The Idol” premiered to a resounding “ugh, really?” from the general public last month, there was a specific label people were quick to apply to the series: vanity project. Who the show was a vanity project for depended on which creator was being complained about at the time. But haters of the instantly despised pop star erotic thriller were practically universal in their assessment that the show was an ego stroke for star The Weeknd and/or series director Sam Levinson: both of whom took their lashings over the course of the show’s five-episode run.
The pair clearly had sky high hopes for the series, to the point that it received a rare TV premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023 before its broadcast debut in June. That was criticized by many as a deeply egotistical push, but its inclusion at the festival did...

The Bennifer era is back upon us. All eyes — and cameras — were upon Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez at “The Flash” premiere at Ovation Hollywood Monday night.
Affleck reprises his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the superhero spin-off. Ezra Miller is back as the titular lead, but the actor kept a relatively low profile on the red carpet.
In addition to the cast and crew, there was a strong “Never Have I Ever” presence, with actors Richa Moorjani, Lee Rodriguez and Michael Cimino all in attendance. Also showing her support was Jessica Chastain, though she does not appear in the movie.
The DC film opens June 16. In the film, worlds collide when the Flash uses his superpowers to travel back in time to change the events of the past. For example, there’s not only Affleck’s Batman, but also a Batman played by Michael Keaton, who donned the Batsuit in the 1989 blockbuster.

This article contains spoilers for Never Have I Ever season 4.
Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) has had a lot of love interests throughout Netflix’s comedy-drama series Never Have I Ever. From the love triangle of her, Ben Gross (Jaren Lewison), and Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet), to the intermediary love interest of Des (Anirudh Pisharody) in season three, Devi has no issues attracting young men of all types. It made complete sense then that the show brought another heartthrob into the picture for the first half of the final season. Ethan Morales (Michael Cimino) is a bad boy in every sense of the word. Ethan likes to vandalize vehicles, manipulate situations to his advantage, and win women over with his incredible smile and toned physique. He also showed he was capable of empathy and being a good partner to Devi throughout his short stint on the show.

Filmmakers’ passion projects can easily spiral out of control, pushing directors and studios down a hole it could take decades to get out of. Right now, two Oscar-winning directors, Francis Ford Coppola and Kevin Costner, have their own in production, both of which have been on their minds since the 1980s.
Sitting down for a joint interview with Deadline, both Coppola and Costner gave their thoughts on the financial risks they have taken throughout their careers and what they hope comes of their projects: Coppola with sprawling epic Megalopolis and Costner with four-part western Horizon, both of which have budgets that reportedly exceed $100 million.
For Megalopolis, Coppola put up his own cash; but with that, he says, comes feeling like a true auteur. “Authorship only means the film is honest to the theme and the premise. It has to be personal, real; it can’t be a synthesis of what...

Although "Heaven's Gate" is now regarded in some circles as a misunderstood masterpiece, Michael Cimino's lavish box office flop had a lot to answer for at the time. Not only was it blamed for the death of the American New Wave, but it was also seen as the final nail in the coffin of the Western. Released in 1980, the subsequent decade was an especially fallow period for the genre, but at least we got "Three Amigos."
The drought lasted almost exactly 10 years until Kevin Costner's "Dances With Wolves" became a massive box office success and went on to win seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, reinvigorating the oldest and most resilient of U.S. genres once again. Two years after Costner's triumph, Clint Eastwood's harsh but lyrical "Unforgiven" was also a big hit with audiences and won the same big prizes at the Oscars. The Western was back.

Devi Vishwakumar is back for one more round of misadventures, as Netflix has just announced a release date for "Never Have I Ever" season 4. The fourth season of the high school-set comedy is poised to be its last, and while we're not quite ready to say goodbye to these vibrant weirdos and their not-finished-cooking teen brains yet, the final episodes look like a lot of fun.
Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher's Netflix comedy about a group of high school geeks led by horny, adventure-seeking Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) has been lauded from its first season for its surprisingly poignant examination of grief and stereotype-bucking Indian-American representation. Across its three seasons, the show has gone to some deep places (the death of Devi's father influences both her best and worst choices) and some deeply funny ones, and while the latest teaser only offers a small taste of what's to come, it...

On Thursday (13 April), the trailer for the final season was released online.

Netflix has set June 8 for the debut of the final season of “Never Have I Ever,” the high school comedy from co-creators Mindy Kaling and Lana Fisher that definitely should’ve gotten John McEnroe an Emmy nomination for Best Narrator.
“Never Have I Ever” Season 4 picks up after the events of Season 3, with show lead Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) on the cusp of graduation and making tough choices about her love life and future. In the last batch of episodes, Devi eventually consummated her on-again, off-again flirtation with fellow school nerd Ben (Jaren Lewison) while seemingly moving on from her other on-again, off-again object of affection, Paxton (Darren Barnet). But Fisher says the love triangle will remain sharp-edged until the final episode streams.

It can be easy to predict which movies will set the box office alight, but every now and then, something great comes along that doesn’t fare so well.
Over the years, there have been a startling number of films that have struggled, or indeed failed, to recoup their budget, unfairly earning the “box office flop” tag.
It’s hard to pin down exactly why films such as these – Children of Men and It’s a Wonderful Life, to name a few – initially struggle to find an audience. But, the majority of the time, quality shines through and the film ultimately finds cult fanbase beyond its cinema release.
Thanks to the advent of streaming services, reliance on box office figures has diminished somewhat over the years. This also means that films which struggled to find an audience upon release could potentially go on to find love years later after being added to Netflix,...

It’s almost midnight in Tokyo, where Isabelle Huppert is playing faded southern belle Amanda in a New National Theatre production of Tennesee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie.” We’re on Zoom to discuss a new retrospective of her career opening at Film Forum this Friday. Her career needs no introduction, but it’s one so bursting with iconic, complicated, often gnarly characters — she has two Césars, five Lumières, a BAFTA, three Cannes honors, a Golden Globe, and an Oscar nomination — that to distill it all into 20 minutes of conversation with the French actress would be a fool’s effort. But one can try.
Instead of trying to parse what’s long made her so alluring to directors like Claude Chabrol (“La Ceremonie”), Jean-Luc Godard (“Every Man for Himself”), Michael Cimino (“Heaven’s Gate”), Maurice Pialat (“Loulou”), Ira Sachs (“Frankie”), Olivier Assayas (“Sentimental Destinies”), Paul Verhoeven (“Elle”), Claire Denis (“White Material”), and...

If Isabelle Huppert is not your favorite actor, she’s the favorite actor of someone you know. Guaranteed. There’s something about her that is unlike any other actor that has ever been on film. But it’s really hard to talk about what that “something” is. In each performance, in every film she’s made, she has such a command of the character, the text, the frame, that we place her in equal authorship with the directors she’s worked with, who happen to be some of most interesting and important in the last half-century—Jean Luc-Godard, Michael Haneke, Claude Chabrol, Michael Cimino, Claire Denis, […]

The third season of "Never Have I Ever" ended on an epic cliffhanger that left fans desperate for news of the next season. With Sherman Oaks High School's resident will-they-won't-they couple finally together, there will definitely be lots of drama in store for Devi and her friends. Netflix hasn't released many details about season 4 yet, but they have released a few major clues.
In the last moments of season 3, the main character Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) redeems a coupon for "one free boink" given to her by her frenemy, Ben. Devi spends most of the season dating her long-time crush, Paxton (Darren Barnet), and a new fling, Des. It seems like Devi is finally ready to take Ben seriously as a potential partner, but there may still be some obstacles in the way of their love.
Against all odds, Paxton graduated high school and was set to attend Arizona State University in the fall.

The origin of United Artists is well-known to any passingly devoted Hollywood history buff, and it can be found Tin Balio's book "United Artists, Volume 1, 1919 - 1950: The Company Built by the Stars." In 1918, Mary Pickford, Carlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, and D.W. Griffith — four of the biggest celebrities of their time — felt something fishy was happening with each of their respective studio contracts. Each of their tenures was due to end soon, and none of them had yet received any offer of renewal. In order to find out what was happening, the quartet hired a private investigator (!) to look into what was going on. The P.I. found that the separate companies that each of them worked for planned on a giant merger, which would lock in standard five-year contracts.

The good news: Never Have I Ever‘s Devi and Paxton are no longer hiding their relationship behind closed doors in the first trailer for Season 3, which features plenty of makeout sessions and, of course, Paxton Hall-Yoshida’s impressive abs.
Now for the bad news: Just because she and Paxton are officially a couple doesn’t mean that Devi’s not questioning their romance. And with her classmates speculating if Paxton is just dating Devi because “it’s like a death-bed, last-wishes thing,” it’s difficult for the teen not to let her insecurities get the best of her.

Director Marco Brambilla has spent most of his career involved in ambitious artistic video installation projects, often mixing recognizable pieces of pop media into abstract and self-aware metanarratives that invite the viewer to reconsider the way said media is consumed and perceived. Brambilla has made an installation named after Michael Cimino's "Heaven's Gate," made a supercut of cinematic war scenes called "Evolution" in 2010, and was one of the filmmakers featured in the 2006 sex-themed anthology film "Destricted." Brambilla has spent his career delving into new media frontiers and was an early adopter of concepts like living online and moving into the metaverse.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched “Brave,” the series finale of “Love, Victor,” now streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
Hulu’s “Love, Victor” came full circle in its series finale, ending where it began — atop Creekwood High’s Winter Carnival Ferris wheel.
In the closing moments of the third season, Victor (Michael Cimino) returned to the spot where, exactly one year earlier in the pilot, he took a ride with former girlfriend Mia (Rachel Hilson) to conceal his sexuality. Only this time, it was his ex-boyfriend Benji (George Sear) sitting beside Victor, professing their love for one another after they spent the season apart so Benji could address his alcoholism and Victor could get to know himself.
“Victor found out who he was this season, and realized that Benji was the right person for him,” Cimino told Variety.
Elsewhere in the finale, it was happy endings all around,...

This article contains spoilers for Love, Victor season 3.
When Love, Victor first premiered on Hulu in June of 2020, it became a special show for so many LGBTQ people, both young and old, because it showed the coming-of-age trope from a whole different perspective than what audiences were accustomed to. Rather than being pushed to the background as a sidekick, Victor Salazar (Michael Cimino) is the star of the whole shebang, the Latino teenager that we put all of our attention towards. Queer characters have often served as the sidekicks in TV, but shows like Love, Victor have changed the way non-straight people serve the narrative of their programs.
Victor’s acceptance of himself as a gay teenager has always been tied to his crush on classmate and eventual co-worker Benji Campbell (George Sear). In the very first episode of the show, Victor realizes that he feels things for Benji that...

“Love, Victor” will come to a close with its third season, out June 15. The Hulu series spinoff of 2018’s LGBTQ+ rom-com “Love, Simon” introduces a whole new cast of Creekwood characters, with some familiar faces making an appearance here and there. Victor (Michael Cimino) starts his story by DMing Simon Spier (Nick Robinson) about his experience realizing he was gay, and from there, Victor makes his own way at Creekwood high school.
Robinson made a cameo toward the end of the first season along with Keiynan Lonsdale as Simon’s boyfriend Bram, and worlds collided. Josh Duhamel guest stars in season 2 as Simon’s dad.
